Org List:

This is the DLV 2005 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Ongoing activity database appears on the web at:

Registration, Zodies, etc.:

Thanks to all who helped shake down the registration process. :)

I think it's about ready to go. Plans are to send out the batch of
re-registration e-mail on Monday, January 3.

It looks like we have 11 people plus 4 SO's registered for real, for a
total of 15 so far. This is very close to our total turnout for DLV 1998
already. :)

Still testing, if anybody wants to try it (or register for real):

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/reg2005norm.html

No major issues have been reported (so far ...). :)

The Big Sister and roommate matching screens should now be working. This
is now an added section to the final registration screen, so hopefully
with fewer mouse clicks, we will see greater participation in both of
these programs. (Sorry to clutter up some mailboxes with test messages
on this.)
. . . . .

As for Zodies, I've removed it from the Big List since it appears not
to be relevant any more. The reply I made to what appeared to be the
original message in the thread never appeared, but I did see a similar
thread in another group which said to the effect that the person or
persons who wanted to make Zodies a t-girl hangout is/are no longer
there.

Of course! :)

First of all, I think there's no doubt that what was the killer activity
for DLV 2004 will return to be the killer activity for DLV 2005! There's
no question about that!

I'm really glad that our group hit it off with them as well as we
did. :)

I think that a turnout of 50 is within striking distance for something
like this if the price is within reason, and I do think that $10 is well
within reason, even $15 or $20. That's the order of magnitude that
people expect to pay for a decent meal anymore. :)

I also agree that we need to do what we can to be sure this is at least
close to revenue neutral for the CR.

We do need to promote this heavily, and we need to emphasize that it's
a very classy place. :)

If I were the one calling the shots on this, I would make (keep) the
carpool thing as the primary transportation method, and do the limo
thing on the soft-pedal. A couple concerns and reasons here.

First, the cost of a limo. With the increased "dwell time" up at the
CR, the cost of the limo increases greatly. The reception last year
ran just over an hour. If you figure a BBQ would run 2-3 hours or so,
that's 5 hours on the clock for each limo.

Second, as I said last year, I would hate to see a limo trip to NSD
dilute the demand for our regular limo tour.

Are you still planning to "bundle" the DLV 2005 pin with this activity?

Another concern (as always) is timing, and avoiding any conflicts and
time crunches. Looking at the schedule, we have the boat tour in the
day, which looks like it will time about the same as last year,
returning to LV about 3:00pm. (I wanna try to make the boat tour this
coming year.) :) That probably means departing for NSD no earlier than
5:00pm to allow people to change and get ready. Is this what you are
thinking of as for timing?

And, I would also like to thank Aiko for taking the initiative to get
the ball rolling on this activity this early in the process. :)

4x4, Charles Bar:

You can always catch up. :) The URL is above (or below?). :)

>I will of course volunteer to coordinate the Charles Bar event.

Thanks, Gina. I'll mark that one as solid.

>I will also be bringing the Hummer so if anybody else wants to 4 wheel,
>we'll find a time and place.

Do you want to make this a scheduled activity or just an informal
pick-up type of thing? (I would normally suggest doing a scheduled
thing, but with the low capacity it might not be a good idea.)

>I'm trying to figure out if I can get there on Monday for Death
>Valley.

We'll most likely be taking off for Death Valley about 10:00am on
Monday. Rendezvous area will be the Zingers parking lot (old Keys) on
Sahara.

If you do take a 4-wheel drive, one thing you might want to do is take
a smaller group on an alternate route on the unpaved "West Side Road"
while the main group follows the paved road thru Badwater and around the
Artists Drive Loop. This road joins the main road just south of the
junction and the visitor center. This road is do-able in a regular
passenger vehicle, but a 4wd is much better.

>Anyway I'll try to find some cool trails in the LV area.

One thing that you might want to look at which is actually very close to
las Vegas is the "Wetlands" area. This is a marshy area more or less
where the Flamingo Wash empties into Las Vegas Wash on its way to Lake
Mead. I don't think I would ever be able to find the good entrance again
-- it's more or less behind the Silver Bowl -- but I'm sure there are
maps and such around.

A bunch of us went there one morning when I coincidentally got a 4wd
Suzuki Grand {something} when I went there on business. I would call the
area a good collection of almost-roads and non-roads. We ended up coming
out in a construction area by the hoity-toity hotel by Lake Las Vegas in
Henderson. That area is definitely not do-able in a regular passenger
vehicle.

Another fairly close one that I might suggest is the Desert National
Wildlife Range just north of Las Vegas. IIRC, it's about a 4-hour trip
in a passenger car on the main road, but there are lots of dirt roads
and turnoffs and such. I have never been up to Gass Peak in that area
but they tell me (the ubiquitous "they") that the view is spectacular.

DLV participant report:

For those who need to know who our registered attendees are and what
their status is, the ongoing daily report is now on line at:

http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/dlvr.html

Please use it, don't abuse it, meaning, among other things, don't give out
the URL (yeah, I know, security through obscurity), don't repost it, and
don't share any of the information with others. Thanks.

Oh, and don't be surprised to see a couple test entries in there. :)

DLV web site listing:

For this year's listing of DLV web sites, I would like to get the list
"seeded" with some listings before we open it up to the Teeming Millions
in January. I think a list with some entries on it will get more
attention than an empty list.

As usual, we'll start it from scratch again, since web sites appear,
disappear, and move quite frequently.

Anyway, if you would like to have your site listed in the premiere
issue of the web site list, just send it in (or just reply to this
mailing) with your name the way you want it to appear and the URL.

1KStars report (optional):

Cat and Densie: please read, others: feel free to skip. :) :) :)

Cat, you are very correct that the new venue (QWest Center) does not
have the feel of intimacy that the Regency Court did. Night Of 1000
Stars is, however, still a very fun and worthwhile event.

Since I know they got complaints about the new venue last year, I was
certain that they would have made some major changes to the layout.
Nope! :( Not really. There were some small changes, however.

Only one stage. Last year they had the warm-up band on a stage to the
north. No longer. The north side of the hall was totally lined with
portable bars. That did take care of the problem with long lines at
the bars last year.

Don't ever say "See ya down there ..." or "Talk to you in a bit ..."
because you will never find them (again). If you run into somebody you
know, it's coincidence as your paths just happen to cross. I knew a lot
of people who were there who I never found. :( At Regency Court as you
naturally circulated, you ran into just about everybody there. Plus, at
Regency you can go up on the balcony and get a good view of much of the
main area. Anyway ...

The emphasis now seems to be more on entertainment and less on
socializing. There is no actual quiet area. Conversation was not
impossible, but not that easy when the groups were on. At Regency, the
hallway and table area to the west, leading to the rotunda and fountain
area, made for a natural quiet area.

They told me (the ubiquitous "they") that Warren B. was there, but I
never saw him. ("He was over there {pointing} somewhere.") :)

They had fewer sit-down tables and more smaller stand-up tables.

Restrooms: Not enough. Only one in the main hall, and there was most
always a line. There was another in the lobby, but ...

Entertainment: Excellent! KC and the Sunshine Band was the feature
performer. Over 2 hours without a break! I was surprised at the way he
had aged! I kinda expected the same 20-ish dude who I remember from back
when I was a twentybopper. :) He's still very high energy with an
excellent voice. Other than KC, only one in the original band is still
with them. Very tight and kick-ass horn section! Densie would have loved
this group! :)

The local warm-up band (Personics?) was not bad at all. They played
mostly 80's stuff.

One kind of disappointment was the lights, or lack of them, actually.
With a 70's disco theme, I expected stuff like chasers and helicopters
and spotlights on mirror balls. Well, the mirror balls were there, but
they were just, uh, there. There were some strobes, both on stage and
on the ceiling.

Food: One change they made this year was instead of several tables with
smaller stuff like petit fours and mini-eclairs, they had one food
line with full slices of pie, cheesecake, etc. There was, unfortunately,
a hellacious line at first. :(

When I finally wandered by there when the line was tolerable, I was
kinda looking over the selections, when the waiter kinda pointed to me
and then to a large slice of marble cheesecake which he had just put
out. (That slice is YOU!) :) Well, I imbibed, and it was to die for.
Most definitely Junior's in quality. :) (And, LOL, I know we have a few
people here who are certainly qualified to judge by that standard.) :)
:)

Did the theme work?: Kinda. I was expecting more of an environment like
Crown and Anchor's Back Room in Provincetown or The Hollywood in Omaha,
(or even The Max in Omaha) more of a real disco-ish atmosphere. I was
also kind of expecting more theme decorations and props and such, like
maybe those huge inflatable platform shoes and gaudy star backdrops and
such. (Maybe those are thought of more as sooooo 90's vintage faux
retro.)

Yeah, a few people dressed the part, mostly guys in paisley shirts and
leisure suits. One guy had an afro wig about the size of a beachball! :)
The lead guitar player for the group had this huge fuzzy top hat, which
was quite an attention getter. It was mostly a tux and gown crowd, as it
usually is.

Conclusion: They say the more things change, the more they stay the
same. (I would quote that in French, but I know I would misspell
something.) Well, 1KStars has changed, and it isn't the same event it
was 3-4 years ago. :( However, what has stayed the same is that it
continues to be a very good fundraiser for the Ne. Aids Project, which
is really the purpose of the thing. It keeps getting larger and larger,
with more and more big names for entertainment, which brings in more
people, which brings in more $$$. I enjoyed it, and from the enthusiasm
of the crowd, it looks like it was highly popular and successful.

I'll report on it next year, if ya really want. :)
