Wow, we could almost call this one the third special Zingers edition. :)
. . . . .

The hotel vote results were sent out to this list last Friday using the
old mailing list processor. If anybody did not receive this, please let
me know and I will resend.
. . . . .

Some Zingers (and a few other) photos are now on line from the trip
a couple weeks ago:

. . . . .

Thanks to those who tested (and continue to test) the registration
process. We now have 9 (plus 2 SO's) actually registered and validated.

A few minor issues were reported and corrected.

Please don't be alarmed that the Big Sister request screen may have not
worked as expected. I'm re-doing that to add a roommate request portion
and hooks for additional items.

I'll announce here when the Big Sister screens are ready to test. The
ones from last year have not been tweaked for the new server yet. If you
should try this, you will most likely get a whole bunch of debugging
output or some rather terse errors.
. . . . .

A point of order has been raised, and the person noting it has requested
not to be named.

It was noted that under one interpretation of Roberts, for a motion to
carry, the AYE votes must be the majority of ALL votes cast, including
ABSTAIN votes. It was also noted that under this interpretation, only
two of our hotels would have made the cut.

I am also aware of a case a couple years back where a vote of an IEEE
committee was overturned for just this reason.

I am not a parliamentarian (nor do I play one on line) however, I do
know that there exist some citations to the effect that Roberts supports
either side of this issue.

Roberts doesn't convert cleanly to on-line voting. However, I've always
thought the procedure here (same as we've used in another group I belong
to) was clear and understood to mean that an ABSTAIN vote was equivalent
to no vote being cast, and thus not counted, period.

Anyway, what I would like to do is from this day forward, clarify that
in all of our votes, an ABSTAIN on any issue is the same as no vote
cast, not counting, as opposed to being the equivalent of a NAY vote.

However, if the group feels differently, somebody can move/second to
either change our procedure and/or re-vote on the two hotels that
would have failed under the alternate interpretation.

OD-ing on Zingers:

JoAnn writes:

>It seems that by all reports that Zingers is the place to be!!
>However, I would not place 'all of my eggs in the same basket'

I agree that we want to watch things very carefully to be sure we don't
over-use Zingers, or any other facility, actually.

In particular, what I was thinking WRT using Zingers, is to use it for
the large single-track activities where we want to encourage an absolute
maximum turnout, such as the Welcome Celebration, the Wednesday
max-turnout thing, and the Annual Mixer.

I do agree that we want to have some diversity.

>Maybe when we have an event at Zingers we have an alternate place from
>the past the same night; e.g., 9pm at Zingers and 11:30pm at an
>alternate place--i.e. Goodtimes.

In your example above, I doubt that many of our group would voluntarily
move from Zingers over to Goodtimes at 11:30, unless there's a very
compelling reason to do so.

I think places like Goodtimes and Flex might better work on an evening
where we're offering a choice between a more "scary" mainstream place
like a casino bar, and a "safe" place.

>Also we need to consider a Show-- Maybe a night other than the Limo
>Tour?

We certainly want at least one show, yes.

We had 2 shows tentatively planned. One was Kenny Kerr on Thursday and
another was Showgirls Of Magic on Saturday. The latest incarnation of
the Kenny Kerr show closed soon after it opened, and SOM is expected to
close, at least at San Remo, before DLV.

There's a chance that SOM will move or re-open elsewhere. There are
also countless other show options.

>Is no one wishing to volunteer to head such???

{looking over the group watching closely for raised hands} Are you
volunteering? :) :) :)

Crystal had volunteered to coordinate Showgirls Of Magic, and Densie
had volunteered to do the Kenny Kerr Show.

But seriously, those who volunteered to coordinate those shows are in
effect off the hook if they choose to be, since the shows will not exist
in their current/former form for DLV 2005. One of those volunteers has
subsequently volunteered to do another activity.

>The Shopping Tour at "Second Time Around" places last year was a lot of
>fun. Maybe this is not a formal event but rather a 'self tour' [small
>group] program with the DLV registration packet for a designated
>morning!

We do have one shopping excursion scheduled for Friday. That's not to
say that more could not be scheduled as options.

I do think that if we're going to plan activities that our people will
enjoy, they should all appear on the schedule, so people will get it
in their minds that they are happening, and make plans to go on them.

I also think that such an activity does need one person to coordinate
it, even if it's just to answer questions and be there to show a
conspicuous face. :)

If you look at the schedule, we do have a very rich set of daytime
activities all planned out.

The areas we have to work on, however, are the prime evening timeslots.
Monday and Saturday are totally blank as of this time.

>We need to provide options.

We have found that having multiple tracks will increase overall
participation, particularly when the primary activity is of limited or
special interest, or is on the $$$ side. The show and pity party are a
good example. We will probably need a local option opposite the Night Of
The Soiled Doves.

Densie Does Zingers:

>>It is very difficult to say anything negative about Zingers.

>my Long Island, and he said that he thought it was made with diet Coke
>(tm). The 7&7 that I had before that didn't taste right either,
>although it was definitely strong and healthy. Could their supplier
>have brought them diet soda?

The funny taste was because I bribed the bartender to put Galiano [sic]
in them. :) Touche' :) :) :)

Seriously, I think that if something (like this) is wrong, others may
have noticed it too and it's good to bring it to their attention.

>With that out of the way...

>I was immediately impressed with the place. The atmosphere is warm and

>The word "plush" comes to mind. The staff and patrons are friendly,

>Lou Martinez and Crew, Friday nights 10pm - 2am could actually be
>considered a DLV event. It's not just a band, it's a show.

>Definitely, replace the annual mixer at Goodtimes with Zinger's.

Although I've always defended Goodtimes as a preferred location for
the Annual Mixer, I have to agree that Zingers is the place for the
Annual Mixer in 2005.

We (me, Densie, Tony) were there Friday the 19th. and didn't get any
negative vibes at all. Maybe we did a good job of passing for "straight"
people, whatever that is. :)

The waitress was very friendly and joked around with us. The bartender
was friendly too, and the drinks were quite potent :) and the service
was fast.

>darn... I shoulda kept that email, checked my trash, but yahoo had

It's very rare that a bar or any firm will discourage t-business. (One
notable exception is apparently the new Rainbow Lounge, which I do not
think will last very long.) It's my impression that any place that
attempts to groom their clientele by actively discouraging any certain
type of customer will lose business overall. Turning away a paying
customer is most definitely a bad practice for business.

IMAO, Zodies could use more business, as it was somewhat vacant on both
the bar and restaurant sides. I did get the impression that they wanted
our business.

The only way a bar manager could "change it back to a straight bar" is
to actively discourage t-business. We did not get that impression at
all.

The down sides of Zodies are that it's small and out of the way.

That's what I know, anyway.

In continuing the conversation, Yvonne did find the note that started
this. It was a second-hand report posted in one of the Yahoo groups. I
responded to it, asking if there were more details. As of press time I
have not seen any replies to it.

Anybody know anything else? If so, please say something. Since there's a
possible change of attitude here, I've yellow-lighted it on the Big List
for now. If there's something about this place that potential customers
should know, please say so. If this is just rumor, I hate to give a good
place a black mark (yellow mark) because of it.
