Org List:

This is the DLV 2005 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Ongoing activity database appears on the web at:

Dates:

I really think the discussion on dates has run its course. Looking over
the ORG mailings, there are more comments about the process than about
the dates. Therefore, if nothing overwhelming comes up between now and
next week, by default the dates April 24 - 30 will be considered solid.

Thanks to everybody for making the date selection process easy this
year. :)
. . . . .

A word about e-mail:

E-mail is not a perfect medium. Non-delivery is not uncommon, as is
delayed delivery. Proof of delivery/reading is spotty at best, as not
all providers/mailers support delivery status notifications.

Also, people vary significantly in the frequency at which they check
their e-mail.

If you send something to the ORG list and don't either get a direct
response or at least see a reference to it in the mailing, please resend
it.

If you write to another DLV organizer and don't get a response, send
again, and if it's relevant to the DLV planning, please copy the
list to keep everybody in the loop.

Please don't assume that anybody's blowing you off if you don't get some
kind of response.

If you don't receive ORG mailings, please write in and let us know, as
bounced and black-hole e-mail, particularly to the free providers, is
very common. You can always compare what you received with what's on the
web in the archives. Link below (or above?). :)

Thanks, gang.

DLV 2005 hotels:

I would like to open the floor for hotel discussion, specifically in the
following areas:

1. Nominations for suggested hotels for DLV 2005.

2. Discussions about the various hotels we may want to suggest, and
even meta-discussions about things as should we be suggesting hotels
and such.

3. Discussion regarding Michelle's "Event Hotel" proposal.
. . . . .

To get the ball rolling ...

1. I would like to nominate the Sahara as a suggested hotel for DLV 2005,
reasons being:

* It's there
* Why not?
* It's reasonably priced
* I've been mostly satisfied there
* Many of our people will stay there even if we don't suggest it.

That's the only hotel which I will be nominating this year.

I may or may not stay there this coming year. I've stayed there the past
few years for DLV and I've been mostly happy. I do get the itch to try
something different every now and then, however.

2. I think we may have OD'd with the number of midscale hotels we
suggested last year. However, I'm not everybody and I'm not going to
push for any limits, preferring to let the group decide on this by the
customary vote.

As to the question, do we want to suggest hotels? My opinion is that
yes, we do, for those who don't know the area and for those who want to
be with, the group or want to avoid being with the group.

I do think that we should have at least one non-casino property as well
as one true upscale property on our suggestion list.

3. I'm not convinced that we should designate one and only one hotel as
our "Event Hotel" (I'm also not convinced that we shouldn't), whether
it's by limiting our suggestions to one, or by desiginating one as "more
suggested". I'm not going to try to stop it if that's what the group
wants to do.

What I will try to stop, as I've said countless times for countless
years, is any action to move our on-the-town activities into some kind
of a sequestered room in said Event Hotel. (AFAIC, "more upscale and
more mainstream" does not mean a group dinner in a rented room at the
Bellagio.) :)

I'm neutral on some kind of "hospitality suite" in such an Event Hotel,
as long as those who use it pay for it. If it's a throw-in for steering
hotel business their way, then that becomes a non-issue.

If there are any official arrangements for group rates, throw-in items,
etc., it will be up to those who see this as a priority to make it
happen, as is the case with most things DLV. :)
. . . . .

We're scheduled to vote on our suggested hotels in November and to
announce them in the November-December general mailing.

I do want to call the question on this "Event Hotel" idea, so I would
like to add the following items to the ballot which will already have
the AYE/NAY candidates for suggested hotels:

1. Do we want to designate one of our suggested hotels as "The Event
Hotel", making it "more suggested" than the others?

2. If the above item carries, which hotel should be designated as "The
Event Hotel"? {list of nominated hotels}

Comments? Additional nominations?

Seriously, the trendy branding will most likely continue. First you
had Hard Rock, then Planet Hollywood bought the Aladdin (story still
developing -- ultra-tacky proposed facade) and now Hooters.

Oh, I'm sure any of the above will have free beer and (.)(.) if you're
playing. :)

I copied your note to Arizona Diane, who is the one who volunteered for
the ballroom thing. She has made 2 submissions to this list over the
past couple months regarding it. They are in the list archives at:

Apparently Diane has made preliminary contact.

It's my preference that you, Diane, and Barb all work together toward
one goal, and that you keep the ORG group in the loop regarding any
significant happenings. Thanks.

They Killed Kenny:

+Also on the Station Casinos front: Comedic drag queen Kenny Kerr ends
+his Thursday-Friday Sunset Station showcase on Aug. 27. The Friday
+night slot will be taken by hypnotist Tom Kaz starting Sept. 3. Kaz
+will continue the Monday and Thursday shows that have built a following
+at Palace Station; all three will remain free.

Those Bastards! :) :)

Jeez, that was quick!

Ok, for now I'm scratching that.

As we know, Kenny may very well surface again in the next 8 months, but
I think it's best if we consider the Thursday {show} timeslot to be open
for the time being at least.

Fortunately this happened 8 months out, not 2 weeks out.

Yes, I was referring to a second golf session during DLV 2005. Any
other event is really outside of the scope of this group.

If anybody wants to organize a second golf match or putting game or
miniature game, the door is open and Mindy has a location for you.

Volunteers?

Perhaps I spoke too soon and wasn't clear on this.

I got this from an off-line "what if" thread. The idea was not to limit
the pin to one activity but to include it with one as a souvenir. There
was never anything I heard regarding limiting it. All of us are well
aware that not everybody does everything.

My major concern this year is that we show (to ourselves and to the
Teeming Millions) a clear and consistent process for setting the dates.

Those of you know me in real life know that in no way I'm a "wonk" for
policy and procedure, but with all of the crap that happened last year,
I want to be very sure that the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed
WRT the timeframe selection this year.

>I suggest we simply hold the deadlines as originally stated.

AFAIC, there's no one person or subgroup who can arbitrarily decide to
change these deadlines. IMAO, the "game" is in session, and we should
not change any of the rules until that game has concluded.

If no motion to extend the discussion is presented prior to September 1,
this question is moot.

If we do have a live motion on the floor as of that time, it may delay
the announcements of the dates, but I doubt if things would drag on
and on.

I get the feeling that most everybody who has wanted to comment on the
dates has done so, and that a motion to extend discussion would most
likely fail to carry.

I also doubt that extending the discussion would result in any
meaningful volume of additional discussion.

I would like to second the above. Although I don't golf, I do value
the contribution of such a project to DLV.

As for the Garden Party, I think it's one of our better ongoing
activities and we should do what we can to support it and continue it.

Very few t* gatherings can boast of such a get-together in a real-world
neighborhood, complete with kids, dogs, and neighbors, and I know I'll
miss that aspect of it, but I hope it will continue on in its new
location.

I'll get you and Yvonne together to exchange information.

I'm assuming you are referring to pin10b, which is the last one, and
actually the 13th. counting to the right and down. Is this correct?

Thanks. I'll interpret this as an affirmation for the proposed dates,
since the actual vote was final about 3 weeks ago. :)

>Heaven forbid.

The group here has been very sane this year with regard to the DLV
timeframe.

A motion to change the DLV dates a month before DLV would almost
certainly die for lack of a second.

According to the rule we adopted last year, once DLV is scheduled, which
will happen by default in about a week, it takes a 2/3 majority vote of
this group here to change the dates. That's a relatively tough hurdle to
jump and will discourage any motions to change the dates that are not a
matter of criticality.

The lack of discussion about the dates tells me that both the group here
and the DLV audience in general are reasonably content with the proposed
timeframe.

The presence of some discusssion for and against extending the comment
period shows me that indeed people are listening, some of them, anyway.

IMAO, we had a very clean nomination and vote on the proposed dates,
plus a well-announced call for comments.

I don't think there's anything else we could or should do WRT the
timeframe selection process.
