Org List:

This is the DLV 2005 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Ongoing activity database appears on the web at:

Dates, show, outage:

Today is September 1.

The Call For Comments period has expired, and by default the DLV
timeframe of April 24 - 30, 2005 is final. According to our standing
rule adopted last year, from this day forward it will take a 2/3
majority of the group here to change the dates. The August-September
general mailing will go out shortly and will announce these dates as
final.

Again, thanks for making this an easy one this year. :)
. . . . .

As of this time it appears that Showgirls Of Magic will not be around
this coming April, at least at the San Hooters, that is. The news item
hinted that it may be moving to the Aladdin, but that is pure
speculation I'm sure.

Crystal (and all), we definitely need to think of options for our
Saturday evening plans. Fortunately we're still almost 8 months out, but
I do thing we should make it a priority to avoid a fizzle-out Saturday
this coming year.

With regrets, I'm going to have to pull the proposed Saturday plans off
the schedule at least for now, since the status of both the property and
the show are at best unknown as of this time. If the group wants, we can
do a HH and dinner at San Hooters, but we may not know what bars and
restaurants will be there until shortly before DLV.

This is not uncommon. We've had countless closures and such, some of
them at very short notice, over the history of DLV.

Comments?
. . . . .

Last week I remember ranting on and on about e-mail not being a perfect
medium. As some of you know, we had a major Internet outage here last
Thursday and Friday, lasting almost 20 hours. Root cause was a fiber cut
downtown, but for hours the CLEC and ILEC were pointing fingers at each
other regarding why the circuit would not come up and stay up. It
finally came clean about 0700 Friday.

If anybody sent in anything that bounced, please resend.

I'm seriously rethinking my logic of hosting this stuff all the way out
here on what sometimes performs like 20-some miles of tin cans and
string. I kinda want to move this mess to a co-location farm, but that
costs some $$$$$. :(

If the web and e-mail for DLV should ever go down for an extended period
anybody who wants it. I normally don't check that e-mail that often but
I do if there is a disruption or outage.

Fortunately {knocking on wood} the major outages are few and far
between.
. . . . .

Speaking of Internet, they tell me (the ubiquitous "they") that both
Imperial Palace and Stardust now have property-wide WIFI, with more
properties to follow shortly. I'm sure this ain't free, but it is
something of note -- to some of us that is.

I've added another sample to the url:

The last (pin10c) shows the formerly-agreed-upon design with a reduced
size "2005" date.

Comments would be appreciated.

Regarding Hooters:

T-business is good business, and I think the vast majority of the places
realize it.

Bowling, mini golf:

Michelle (NV) writes:

>Hi Annie and all, I would like to try the bowling thing again , I

Ok, I'll put Bowling on the schedule for Monday PM. We'll be sure this
is pre-pay this year.

>I'd also be interested in doing the miniture golf thing suggested. As
>well as being a assistant for BR dancing and golf if needed.

I've added Miniature Golf to the proposed list. You might want to pick a
timeslot now -- you can always change it later -- to tentatively reserve
the time on the calendar.

As for the Ballroom thing, I now show Diane, Tawni, Barb, and Michelle
on record for it.

Everybody (named): are we coordinating efforts?

I want to be sure that we're all working toward a common end with the
ballroom type activities. There's nothing that says we can't have two or
more ball(room)-related activities this coming year, if that's what we
want. I just want to be sure all of us are on the same page and heading
in the same direction.

Feedback?

Ok, I'll get you on the list for that. We will confirm phone numbers
as the date approaches.

>Let me know what you guys and gals think.

We have our Welcome Celebration scheduled for Sunday evening, no
location yet, but Spotlight would be an option and Pride Factory could
be a side-option during such a thing.

As for "GLBT oriented adult video" that you mentioned, let's be sure
that our ORG group here is comfortable that we're not putting a venue on
our calendar which is, uh, like many adult video parlors. From your
description, I don't think Pride Factory is this kind of place, but we
do want to confirm and be sure.

Diane, other ballroomers, would there be any objection to flip-flopping
golf and the ballroom thing?

With the cancellation of our intended show, which was a Thursday and
Friday only thing, there's far less "glue" holding the show/limo to
Thursday.

There's also nothing really gluing EON to Wednesday either. Everything
is still highly tentative, and now is indeed the time to discuss and
make some preliminary decisions.

>If NSDII remains on Tuesday evening, we should be back in Vegas early

Am I to assume that there will be some kind of a Post-NSD get-together
this coming year? (No, I do not plan to suggest a venue for same this
time. {hiding in corner}) :)

+Dressed for Success

+The men of `Dragapella,' who say they have `a large straight
+following,' are looking for a home on the Strip

_By MIKE WEATHERFORD REVIEW-JOURNAL _

http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2004/Aug-27-Fri-2004/photos/drag.jpg

+Clockwise from top, Irwin Keller as Winnie, Jeff Manabat as Trixie,
+Ben Schatz as Rachel and Chris Dilley as Trampolina make up the
+Kinsey Sicks. The "Dragapella" stars move beyond lip-syncing to real
+singing and political satire.

+What are these drag queens covering up?

+The Kinsey Sicks are the long-delayed next step for Las Vegas: A drag
+show that goes beyond lip-syncing celebrity impersonations to offer
+performers using their own voices.

+"It's certainly a very different kind of show than people often expect
+when they walk in the door," says Irwin Keller, co-founder of the
+quartet that stages a new edition of its off-Broadway show,
+"Dragapella," today at the Westin Casuarina. "Even if they expect us
+to sing, they really don't expect it to sound beautiful."

+But it's what they sing that's really important, he adds. "The thing
+about the drag for us is that it works as a mask," Keller says. "It
+really does give you an incredible freedom to articulate stuff in a
+very different voice from what you normally do.

+"Think about the ventriloquist and the dummy. The dummy can say all
+sorts of shocking stuff, and you don't blame the ventriloquist at
+all."

+If that sounds more like the satiric puppet musical "Avenue Q" than
+"An Evening at La Cage," Keller doesn't disagree. In fact, he says
+he's been told as much by people who have seen both "Dragapella" and
+"Q," the "Sesame Street" parody headed for a $40 million venue in
+Wynn Las Vegas next year.

+The "Dragapella" songs by co-founder Ben Schatz turn the Association's
+"Cherish" into "Fetish," tell what happens "When You're Good to Dubya"
+and hail the glories of "Sexy Underwear."

+Fans of the show include Frank Marino, star of "La Cage" at the
+Riviera. "It's like a `V' going off in two directions," Marino says to
+explain why "Dragapella" isn't a direct threat.

+He'd better be right, should "Dragapella" land a permanent berth on
+the Strip. The revue has twice visited the Westin's 250-seat theater
+this year, with both stops doubling as showcases for prospective
+backers of a longer run. Keller says his quartet has "a large
+straight following" beyond its core support in the gay community.

+Playing a mainstream venue such as the Westin "doesn't change in big
+ways" what they do onstage, he says. "We make choices based on that,
+but they're small choices."

+The idea was born in 1993 when four friends attended a Bette Midler
+concert in San Francisco dressed as the Andrews Sisters. Someone asked
+them to sing at a party, and Keller had to break the news that they
+didn't sing.

+But later, the four compared notes and realized they did have musical
+backgrounds. They took the name Kinsey Sicks from sex researcher Alfred
+Kinsey's 1-to-6 ranking of sexual preference, in which "6" was purely
+homosexual.

+Over the years, both Keller and Schatz gave up their day jobs as
+attorneys and activists. Keller authored Chicago's human rights
+ordinance and was director of the AIDS Legal Referral Panel of the+
+San Francisco Bay Area. Schatz headed the Gay & Lesbian Medical
+Association and advised Bill Clinton on AIDS policy during his first
+presidential campaign.

+"We did not undertake this as a means of setting about finding a way
+to overturn drag," Keller says. But as the years certified the
+popularity of the group's a capella harmonies, newer members Chris
+Dilley and Jeff Manabat were recruited for their singing strengths.

+And in the process, the Kinseys created a new genre "of which we
+remain the only example," Keller says with a laugh. "We really inhabit
+kind of different spheres" than Las Vegas' established drag shows.
+"Lord knows we are not pretty girls."

+Meanwhile, Kenny Kerr -- whose "Boy-Lesque" introduced mainstream Las
+Vegas tourists to drag in 1977 -- wraps a showcase run today at
+Sunset Station, where he spent two months trying to reintroduce "Kenny
+Kerr and Friends." And "La Cage" is gearing up for its 20th
+anniversary Sept. 18. "We've modernized the characters," Marino says,
+adding a Jennifer Lopez and "an age-appropriate Britney Spears," and
+updating the music in other tributes. As the years drained its shock
+value, some might wonder how "La Cage" could sustain interest. But
+Marino says there's a cycle of renewal every few years, usually
+sparked by a movie. "When it comes in style, it comes in big," he
+says.

+The "La Cage" cast now has high expectations for the scheduled March
+release of "Miss Congeniality 2," in which Sandra Bullock's FBI agent
+again goes undercover, this time in their show. Marino says he gets to
+use his own name in the movie, though both the setting and the show's
+name will be changed. "It's gonna bring back drag in every form," he
+predicts.
