Still much commentary regarding the proposed dates. 20 days now remain
in our comment period. {tick-tock tick-tock ...}

No thoughts or comments so far from the "more mainstream/upscale" bar
fans. (>>HINT<<)

Although we're still 8 months out, the schedule is taking shape very
nicely. Please continue to choose tentative timeslots for the activities
you are responsible for.

Not that many comments about Michelle's "Event Hotel" proposal. I plan
to ask for comments about it in the next general mailing. Comments
here, positive or negative, will be appreciated.

NSD II:

Aiko writes:

>>>I won't know any details until a little later into the year.

>>That's fine, we're not in any hurry. I would, however, pick an evening
>>to hold the timeslot, such as Tuesday.

>Since Wednesday is a traditional "Gettogether" night and Thursday is
>the normal Limo Tour night, let me propose Tuesday evening for NSDII.

Ok, I'll get this on the tentative schedule for Tuesday.

>There has been discussion that if we have over 50 attendees to NSDII,
>CR would put on a BBQ for us...

Yes, and I think that is a great idea.

I assume that this would be funded by us, am I correct? Do you know how
much per person?

>Tuesday evening may not get the maximum turnout, but we did have 36
>last year, and hopefully we can entice more to go this year.

I think that with our normal growth, plus the word getting out that it
is a very fun time, we should be able to come close to 50, if not more.

With an expanded NSD/BBQ we will get both the ones who want to dress a
bit more exotic plus those who would go for a social thing such as a
BBQ.

This last year I was afraid that we would exceed our limit of 40. We had
54 signed up for it and the magic formula estimated an actual turnout of
47.1. It turned out that we only had 36 in actuality. I was very
surprised by this. Maybe I have to adjust the fudge factors a bit.

>maybe we could use some of their "clients" for that number. :)

Uh ... what if some of our people are their "clients"? {ducking}

T-shirt review:

Although I have more DLV t-shirts than I can count, I wanted to see what
the Cafe Press ones were like. Two of the designs that Dorothy offers
interested me in particular, the "ringer" tee and the raglan top.

I was tempted to order both at once, but decided to do them one at a
time in case there were some major issues. (There were not, actually.)

I ordered one of the "ringer" style shirts.

Positives:

. Easy ordering on line. Prompt shipment.

. Logo was very distinct, and far more detailed than the silkscreen
versions.

. Although it's a dye transfer, they did a very good job of trimming the
transfer prior to application, and the transfer was not noticeably
stiff, even on this lightweight fabric. Centering and orientation were
perfect.

. Overall, very attractive.

Minuses:

. Fabric is much lighter weight than I expected. I wouldn't call it
flimsy, but it's definitely not as heavy as the Hanes Her Way or Fashion
Gear shirts. (Don't wear a dark or a pattered bra under this style.)
This may or may not be an actual minus, but I expected a heavier fabric.

. The blue in the lettering is definitely not as vivid as I had
expected. At first glance it looked like the lettering was solid black,
and from a distance, the entire logo can appear to be all black on
white (black on background).

. The detail of the print is, in fact, so fine that the artifact of the
transition from the black outline to the blue fill in the lettering is
distinctly visible. (See note below, this can be fixed.)

. (for this particular style) Sizing definitely runs on the small size.
I ordered this in XL just to be sure, and it fits just about the way I
like it. I hope it does not shrink much. A normal XL tee will fit me
like a circus tent. For this style, there are many of our people who
won't be able to get one that fits.
. . . . .

I wore it to a get-together last weekend. Only one other person there
had ever attended DLV ("Other Annie") but some of the others noticed the
shirt and asked me what DLV was. (/me spams the channel with shameless
plugs ...)

Overall, a good product. I'll be ordering the raglan top as soon as
Dorothy can get the edited image file in there.
. . . . .

Dorothy, I want to send you an edited image file. I want to manually
remove as much of the artifact in the lettering as I can and lighten
both the blue and the brown.

I'm assuming that you can substitute an edited image file, am I correct?

Also, I know you are not receiving any $$$ for these, but do you at
least get any kind of count as to how many of which items are sold?
It would be interesting to know what the real demand for these is.

Dance lesson and cruise:

Diane writes:

>I would like to tentatively schedule the LM cruise for Thursday (either
>noon or 2 pm sailing). This makes a departure of 11:00 or 1pm

Ok, I've marked it just PM for now. You can choose the time as the date
approaches.

I would consider the earlier time in order to avoid affecting the
turnout for the evening activities.

>Like to schedule the ballroom dance instruction for Wednesday at 2:30.
>According to the director, A. McAffee, 'schedule a time that would be
>convienient for you". Minimum group needed is 8 @ $15 pp

Wednesday at 2:30pm it is.

>>NO!<<

Sheesh! :)

Seriously, I get the point. :)

Any more questions? :)

Shopping:

Diane writes:

>Shopping trip to (location-tba) Friday 11:00 or 2nd choice - Friday
>3:00

I definitely think 11:00 is the way to go on this. Taking a trip to the
real world, starting something like this mid afternoon on Friday would
reduce our turnout at HH and possibly dinner.

I don't want JoAnn (or anybody) to take a bath on a project like this.
(Actually, I would like to see one of our goals this year be that no
individual takes a bath on behalf of the group.)

I do, however, think that something like this at $5-ish or less will be
a high-demand item, with most or all of an initial run of 100 being sold
before or during DLV. I think sales would be sluggish at $15.

>Any remaining funds after 100% of sales can go any expenses related
>to the pins, and any remainder after to JoAnn, as a thank you for
>providing the initial investment capital. comments? questions?

I don't have any problems with that, as long as those involved in the
financial end of this project understand and agree that they are the
ones responsible for the various administrivial and possibly legal
issues. (Grab can of worms, walk toward can opener.) :)

>Questions to the org group:

>3. If we go with just Annie's Logo, do we keep it generic or date it?

I lean toward generic, but if the group wants dated, that's fine.

>Dating will emphasis next years dlv, and more sentimental value as the

>Having a generic logo (I prefer), would be current at any dlv in the

At first I thought that adding the dates or the year would make the pin
overly "busy" but the last 3 on the sample page shows that this could be
an option.

>Why Annie's Logo?

>Annie's logo has been used for many years now, and is the logo everyone
>directly relates with dlv.

Thanks, Yvonne. I admit I am partial to that logo, but I won't ram it
down anybody's throat if the group really wants something else.

It's been in use since April of 1999. I've played around with some other
designs, but always seem to go back to that one when I'm doing a new
page or something.

Yes, it is recognizable by many and is immediately associated with our
event by many of those in the t* community.

Yet, it's nonobvious to the casual observer. One thing I do like about
it, and one principle I want to keep with any DLV logo, is to avoid the
overused and stereotypical themes that you see in t* logos, such as the
male form with the female shadow, variants on yin-yang and mars-venus,
the fading XY and dominant XX, and such.

>4. Selecting color scheme of pin itself.

>I was thinking of giving that decison to the logo designer or if we
>choose to use Annie's logo, then Annie should decide the color scheme
>of the pin. Or we can again go with a vote.

I'm assuming that the entire run of 100 has to be the same color(s), am
I correct?

The way I look at it, it will most likely have to be a single (dark or
saturated, contrasting with yellowish) color against the brass. I played
around making the lettering outlined in brass with an enamel fill, but I
don't think that will work. Even at 300 lines per inch (more than I
think they can do for the brass pin) it gets tight and detail is lost.

Likewise, if we leave the background (tower and building) intact, that
probably won't work very well outlining in brass with an enamel fill.

I have some rough samples on the web now:

http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/pins.html

The leftmost was one of the first designs, the next 3 are various color
samples of a somewhat cleaner and higher scale design. The right 3 are
"dated" ones with the dates or year.

I would like to have feedback on these, please.

Please remember that these are rough quick-hack proof of concept images.
Yes, these will have quite a bit of artifact when viewed full size. If
we go with one of these, I'll prepare a production quality image.

The very best time to do projects like this is now, while we are still
in the slack phase of the planning year. It would also be nice to have
all of the logo items and such solid before the first of the year.

Art Tour:

>So if there are strong feelings concerning the value of a broad concept

I'm not the one organizing this, but I would tend to go with the option
that has the broadest appeal and interest, that which might reach out to
those who are not ordinarily the art exhibit type, but who might wanna
go along.

>However if you want to do both art and golf or art and thrift shopping,
>we can talk about the schedule. If anyone has any comments or requests

We will most likely have many multi-tracked daytime activities this
year.

I see this as a Good Thing<tm> since it will tend to increase our
overall participation.

The one principle that has been brought up is to not schedule your
activity against what it was scheduled against last year. I see that
Diane has moved the Lake Mead thing to Thursday as an example.

>Personally, I was very pleased with the show we attended, but I will be
>checking out the Strip Gallaries the next time I'm in town and we may

How often do the LV exhibits open and close? Is it a bit too early to
make definite plans for this coming April?
