DLV dates and hotels:

13 days left in our comment period regarding the DLV 2005 proposed
dates. Speak now or forever ...

However, this comment came in this morning on the discussion forum,
and I'm copying it here ...

>Given the low levels of traffic on dlvorg and dlvdisc on any topic, I
>just think we're in the dog days of summer. Is there a harm in waiting
>until 9/15 or 9/30 to finalize the dates? So much can change so
>quickly. Just ask the empolyees of the soon-to-be Hooters Hotel and
>Casino.

Traffic on the discussion forum has been somewhat low, coming in bursts,
but that here on ORG has been what I consider normal, with the chatter
mostly being on very preliminary activity planning and brainstorming and
pet projects such as t-shirts and pins, but little/none on the issues
such as dates (which has historically been a hot issue) and
mainstream/upscale bars, which I expected to get far more discussion
than it has.

There's probably no harm in extending the comment period, but one thing
I really hate to do is to change any rules in the middle of the game.

One thing I do want to be very careful of this year -- I want to be
sure that if there's any change either to the proposed dates or to our
methods of selecting the dates (even something seemingly trivial such as
extending the comment period), that we follow what procedures we do have
(motion, second, etc.) on such a thing, so that there's no question
about fairness or procedure.

In other words, if a motion (here in the ORG group) to extend the call
for comments by 15 (30) days carries, it will happen.
. . . . .

Any (more) comments on Michelle's "Event Hotel" proposal?
(Hooters, maybe?) :)

I'll add an item on this to go out in the general mailing at the end
of this month.

Mindy, golfers? Has a decision been made regarding a second golf
session?

Ok, I've got the Pity Party penciled in on Thursday evening, location
to be announced.

Got you down on Saturday. Again, I think this will be a major hit.
Thanks, Mindy! :)

Ok, Tuesday at 10:30 it is, thanks.

I've updated the sample page and added a few more like this.

>If the price allows, the year could be
>in silver, which would give contrast and emphasize both the logo and
>the year.

I don't think they offer a partial silver tone on the brass pin. Yvonne,
do you know if this is an option?

Anyway, on the web now, pin10 is with the large date, gold tone, blue
enamel. pin9a is with a silver tone date, if they should offer such an
option. pin9b is gold tone outline lettering on the date with an enamel
fill, and pin9c is the same with silver tone lettering, enamel fill.
pin10r is supposed to be a bright scarlet enamel fill, but it looks more
orange on the Sparc monitor and on the Compaq monitor here at work. On
the Trinitron it looks fine, and the image has no green at all in it, so
if it looks orangey to you, imagine it as bright red. :) pin10b is the
same as pin10 except with a black enamel fill.

There was also a comment made off line regarding an idea to "bundle" the
pin into some kind of pay-as-you-go activity, perhaps this pin being the
"token" for NSD II, as a way to insure a certain number of sales. I
kinda like this idea, I admit.

Comments, gang?

T-shirts:

Thanks, Dorothy. Please let me know if you think there will be any
problem with this. I've lightened the blue and the brown to hopefully
show more of the color on the transfer.

>Cafepress sends an e-mail to me each time a purchase is made. The

Well, at least they do appear to be moving. Out of curiosity, which
items appear to be the most popular?

San Remo (Hooters) news:

Thanks to all who sent in articles and pointers to this.

I first saw this as a rumor in the newsfroup, and was not going to say
anything, since misinformation is common there, but it was confirmed in
Tuesday's {Review-Journal} that Hooters (you know what that is, right?)
:) is apparently making a bid to take over the San Remo.

LOL -- I'm editing this item at about 10:15pm and an item about the new
Hooters Hotel and casino just ran on the local news here in Omaha. :)

But anyway ...

According to the LVRJ (Norm, The Scene and Heard):

+The 711-room Hotel San Remo will become Hooters Casino Hotel in late
+2005, with a Hooters Beach Club abd a restaurant owned by former Miami
+Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, it was announced Monday.
. . .

A more detailed item appeared in the {Sun} ...

+San Remo converting to Hooters brand

+Observer: Hotel-casino may also be sold

+By Liz Benston LAS VEGAS SUN

+Skimpy shorts and tight tank tops already are ubiquitous on the Strip
+but will be making another debut of sorts at the Hotel San Remo, which
+has signed a management deal with the Hooters restaurant chain to
+rebrand the Las Vegas hotel-casino into a Hooters Casino Hotel.

+The 711-room property, which is east of the Tropicana resort on
+Tropicana Avenue and overshadowed by its larger and showier neighbors,
+expects to offer a Hooters restaurant adjacent to the casino floor as
+well as service from the famed "Hooters Girls."

+"It's going to be an entirely new property," San Remo General Manager
+Mike Hessling said today. "You will not recognize a portion of the San
+Remo when it's done."

+The property also will have new restaurants, including a Dan Marino's
+Fine Food and Spirits, a Florida-based chain owned by the former Miami
+Dolphins football star. The pool area will be about three times its
+current size, with a Hooters Beach Club and tropical theme. The hotel
+rooms will be remodeled with a "Florida casual" look and the casino
+also will be updated. The outside of the property will feature the
+Hooters owl logo and at night will be lit with the chain's trademark
+orange tint.

+Hooters founders will have a management stake in the hotel-casino and
+are beginning the process of obtaining a state casino license. The
+property will be run by a joint venture of about nine people including
+the hotel's current Japanese investors, officials with Clearwater,
+Fla.-based Hooters Management Corp. and the owners of the two existing
+Hooters franchises in the Las Vegas area. The franchise owners will
+keep open those locations, one on West Sahara Avenue in Las Vegas and
+the other inside the Sunset Station hotel-casino.

+The hotel plans a late 2005 "grand opening" as a Hooters and will
+remain open during the transformation.

+The San Remo intends to keep its 600 or so employees but will hire an
+additional 400 workers, including Hooters Girls, Hessling said. None of
+the property's existing employees will be replaced by Hooters Girls, he
+said.

+Hooters has been looking to get into the casino business and was
+scouting the Las Vegas market for about the last three and a half
+years, said Hessling, who has worked at the property for the past 15
+years.

+Hessling said he began serious discussions about redeveloping the San
+Remo about a year ago and talked with several entertainment companies
+about a possible partnership. Hooters approached the San Remo in
+December.

+The Hooters casino experiment may spread elsewhere if the property is
+successful, though the company doesn't yet have expansion plans,
+Hooters Management Corp. President Neil Kiefer said.

+The Hooters brand is well-known and will attract more visitors to the
+property, which is somewhat off the beaten path and is small enough so
+that a defined niche makes sense, said Anthony Curtis, publisher of the
+Las Vegas Advisor consumer newsletter.

+The name also fits in with the continued trend toward sexier
+entertainment in Las Vegas, he said.

+"It's a bold and good move for them," Curtis said. "I think it's about
+the best brand you can have."

+Many people are curious about the Hooters restaurants but are perhaps
+too shy to check them out, he said. A major property will attract a
+bigger cross-section of people, from Hooters fans to onlookers, he
+said.

+The Hooters brand might hurt efforts to market to Japanese tourists who
+patronize the property because of its Japanese ownership, though
+bargain-minded tour groups likely will continue to go there, said Bill
+Thompson, a professor of public administration at UNLV.

+Thompson recently visited Japan to discuss the Las Vegas casino
+industry with business and government officials, who are considering
+legalizing casinos in that country. Thompson also met with San Remo
+co-owner Toyo Izumi, who is involved in the manufacturing business in
+Japan.

+"This man showed no enthusiasm for casinos here or casinos in Japan,"
+Thompson said. "This might be an interim step to a sale or part of an
+ownership transition" to Hooters, he said.

+Hessling said the Hooters hotel-casino and the new ownership structure
+are expected to be "the future of the property." If the property is
+successful it could expand onto several acres of unused land at the
+site, he said.

+San Remo has never specifically catered to the Japanese market and
+instead hosts a cross-section of largely American tourists familiar
+with the Hooters brand, Hessling added.

+"We have more of the typical Midwestern, value-minded domestic
+traveler," he said. "Hooters (attracts) a very broad demographic, from
+the 20s to the 70s."
. . . . .

Uh, well, gang ...

"Late 2005" implies to me that the San Remo will still be the San Remo
in April, and hopefully Showgirls Of Magic will still be playing there.

We should, however, have a "Plan B" for Saturday, one that we can roll
out, possibly at short notice, if we need to. Throughout the history of
DLV, we've had facilities close and shows close/move at short notice.

We do have 8 months and some breathing room, but let's not procrastinate
on putting our collective thinking caps on and coming up with a Plan B
that would prevent a repeat of our Saturday fizzle-out of 2004.
