Various items:

Some of you already know this, but the machine which hosts this list,
among many other services, will be undergoing a major upgrade over the
next few weeks. This includes brand new hardware and a new version of
the OS. Testing is planned to begin around November 1 (like this week)
and cutover is planned around the end of the month.

Las Vegas news:

Boyd Gaming, which operates the Stardust as well as several others, has
just signed Wayne Newton to a multi-megabuck 40-week per year contract.
Newton had already been signed for a one-night supershow on New Years
Eve. Enter The Night, the Stardust's musical-variety revue, will close
as of December 27. Enter The Night opened in 1991, replacing the
long-running (30+ years) Lido De Paris.

For those of you who want to see a classic Las Vegas show, the Wayne
Newton show may be one for you. Comments?

Mass-forwardings:

Unfortunately, most of the material sent to this list this past week
consisted of various items sent as a result of requests mass-forward.
We got a couple feelgood items, a scarelore warning, and a few copies
of a petition. It may be important, but it belongs elsewhere. Thanks
for your cooperation in keeping this list clean and on topic.

Ghost towns:

>>>7. Trip to Rhyolite.

>Say, if you want to see ghost towns, I know 2 of them that are closer
>than Rhyolite, which is maybe 150 miles away. Both are in Arizona but
>not that far. First is Chloride, and it's between the Dam and Kingman
>just a piece off the highway. It's not that exciting, though.

Hmmmm..... I didn't think Rhyolite was that far.

>The real good one is Oatman, and you get to travel on a authentic
>piece of Route 66 to get to it from Kingman. The Oatman Hotel is
>where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon and it's
>still standing.

I don't know about Chloride, but I know about Oatman, and IIRC it's
kinda touristy. That's still a 2-3 hour drive each way.

>It's probably a wee bit faster to go through Laughlin and Bullhead,
>but going through Kingman you get the Authentic Route 66.

<lol> One thing I do like about Laughlin is that when I go there, I
really feel young again. <vbfg> :)

Italian Restaurants:

>>something like that. IIRC, the only things open in the evening in that
>>strip mall are Goodtimes and an Italian restaurant toward the back of

>Yes, and did you know that that restaurant was once owned and run by
>Liberace himself? Bet you didn't. It's good, too.

Actually, no I didn't. I've been to an Italian place just a bit east
of that area, still on Trop. It was good, iirc.

Either of these would most likely be good for some kind of a communal
dinner, if <hint> somebody wants to take the initiative to organize
it. </hint>

I also remember a fairly decent Italian place just off the strip on
Audrie, behind the IP and Flamingo, which, again, would be a good
place to meet for din-din if <hint> somebody will volunteer to
coordinate it. </hint>

Spreading the word:

>>In 1998 we had some web and newsfroup exposure, but nothing major.

>I read most of the discussion groups and never saw anything, at all.

I did some brief announcements to many of the alt t* theme groups, and
one soc group, iirc. I don't want to even approach what might be
considered newsgroup spam, so I made them at different times to
different groups.

>>Better yet, offer to furnish a brief article on DLV to your group's
>>newletter, etc. Many newsletters need content. I'll assist with the
>>writing if you don't want to do it yourself.

>We don't have a website yet, but since I'm editor of the Lambda News,
>I'll get it in there.

Thanks, we appreciate it. :)

>I don't know what good it'll do, but I'll try.
>Some of our girls are so deep in the closet, they won't even give us
>their address for the News, and a couple of them won't even say what
>town their from.

Actually, I think those are the ones we (meaning all of us, not in
relation to DLV) need to reach out to. At least they have made some
contact with the community. That's most likely a big step.
