Getting together:

First of all, if anybody on the list is gonna be in the Milwaukee area
this next week, and would like to get together, please e-mail me.
(annie@annie.net) I'll be attending the annual MAGGIE Fall Harvest from
Thursday thru Saturday. Let me know if you are interested and I'll give
you contact information.

Second, it looks like I'll be in the Las Vegas area from Monday evening,
December 6, thru Friday, December 10th, attending a (non-t*) conference.
Evenings will be mostly free. I'm planning to send a note out to those
I know to be in the LV area shortly before, but with over 100 people on
this list, I don't readily recognize some which are local to LV. I'll
send a reminder to the list around the first of December.

Making initial plans:

As you know, the activity on this list has decreased somewhat over
the past few weeks. I suspect this is twofold, one being that we've
discussed most of the DLV issues in some detail, and two, we're
approaching the holiday season, and people have activities other
than anticipating DLV to occupy their time.

In this mailing, I would like to summarize some of the high points
we've covered, and give a final call for discussion on these, for
this preliminary organizational list.

Around the first of December, I would like to close down this list
by publishing a skeleton-frame schedule, and a list of possible
activities, which can be presented to the regular DLV2000 mailing
list when it starts up around the first of the year.

If we paint the broad strokes before the holidays, we can fill in
the details in the months prior to May.

Some summary points:

I'd like to summarize some of the discussion we've had here. I do
draw some conclusions, so if anybody disagrees, or if anybody thinks
more discussion is necessary, please speak up now.

The concensus I've been hearing is that most everyone is in favor of
keeping the informal vacation-not-a-convention format. Also, I'm
hearing a preference for our open on-the-town style, but being
sensitive to, and supportive of those who may be new or a bit shy
about appearing in public.

The group appears to want enough activities to keep things moving,
but to avoid od'ing on activities to avoid a time crunch, and, of
course, general overload and burnout.

The topic of a meeting or assembly room was discussed quite a bit. I
heard no major opposition to such a thing as an option for those who
want it (and want to pay for it). I heard several concerns about it
being used to replace our usual meeting places, with the majority being
opposed to this use. I also heard opposition to any kind of a mandatory
fee for DLV participants for this. (With our current format, almost
anything mandatory will not work.)

The possibility of getting a group rate at one of the popular hotels
was discussed, with no opposition. One of the local ladies will be
looking into this. I realize that getting EVERYBODY in the same hotel
will be an exercise in futility, but something like this could help to
make the group more cohesive. I see this as a realistic option if a
property will indeed give us rates that are better than the street
price, and along the line of what is known as "casino rate". I see
this also helping with the transportation issue.

As for transportation, this was not discussed much, but from what was,
it seemed like our only practical option was private cars and a shared
van(s). I didn't hear anybody remark of any major transportation
problem except for such things as delays and traffic jams.

I heard no major objection to the proposed schedule of Thursday
evening, May 11, thru Tuesday, May 16, with the major activities
occurring between Friday evening and Sunday evening. There's a demand
for some kind of activity on Thursday evening, but objections to
having the big kick-off at that time.

Makeovers was the hot topic on the list early in 1999, but interest
waned, or rather disappeared, when DLV got underway. Concensus seems to
be that something like this should be scheduled very early during the
event. I'll try to touch base with our Mary Kay friends when I'm in LV
in December, and see what options we can come up with.

DLV has gotten too big for one person to coordinate everything. We'll
have a semiformal "call for volunteers" right after the first of the
year. We do want to allow people to provisionally volunteer, since
they may not know for sure if they will attend that far in advance.

We already had a call for assistance in spreading the word, and some
feedback on this. I have not noticed any great increase in the number
of e-mails or web hits, but it's still six months away.

We want to keep DLV affordable to those of modest means. We want to
schedule activities that are reasonably priced.

Side trips were discussed. My feeling is that these might be an option
for the daytime on the non-weekend days.

Las Vegas shows, both FI and legacy, are popular activities. My personal
feeling is that we should schedule the big show events in the weekend,
to maximize the opportunity to attend. I do think we od'd on scheduled
shows last year, and interest declined as the event progressed. I think
it's probably safe to say that we should schedule one FI show, and one
legacy show for the weekend.
