Numbers game:

We're still in need of a volunteer to take over for Crystal in
the slot currently designated for Namaste Indian Cuisine.

If you're hesitating on this due to the fact that you just do not
care for Indian food, as the Coordinator of record, you'll be free
to select an alternate venue and type of cuisine. We would suggest
anything other than Moroccan or Mexican since those two types are
already covered.

For a minimalist approach, all you have to do is name a place and
agree to be there. Just break up the crowd you get into groups of
3 to 6 and use available tables.

Contact phone numbers:

Since Crystal will not be with us this year, we will need another
volunteer to act as a phone contact person. Annie will be one, and
has a local phone for the duration of the event, but we will need
at least one other.

Only requirement is to have a working cell phone and be willing to
answer general queries about DLV during the event. Your phone does
not need to be local to Las Vegas, as the vast majority of the
calls will be from other cell phones with liberal nationwide
calling plans.

This should be a low-impact low-maintenance duty. You can expect
to receive 0-3 calls or so per day, most of which can be handled
in 30 seconds or less. Most of them want to confirm schedule info
and such.

Anyone asking you for a ride should be told to please take a taxi.

Coordinator Phone Numbers:

We're asking all Coordinators to please give us your cell phone
numbers in the event that contact needs to be made with you during
the event.

If you're shy about giving it out, don't panic. This is voluntary.

The numbers will be give out only to the designated contact people
and you will be able to specify the conditions under which they may
be used. Anything from "life or death only" to "give out freely" and
we will honor it. If not explicitly specified, it will be given to the
DLV contact people only with instructions to place any calls personally
and not give out the numbers.

Coordinators, please reply with your cell phone and we'll begin the
list. TIA

Latest numbers:

As of Thursday morning we have a total of 168 signed up. The next
big test will be to see how many of these follow through and sign
up for activities. We typically have several who fall off the end
when they fail to show any sign of life at activity sign-up time.

27 SOs are signed up. The SO sign-up percentage is higher than it
was at first, but still lower than in previous years.

Total of 43 newcomers signed up so far. Most of the recent sign-ups
are newcomers, so we can expect this count to increase. Out of
these 43, the magic machine says that 27 of them will show.

We are so fortunate to have all of you volunteers who are making this
exciting schedule we have listed at end of this e-mail.

WOW! And again, WOW!!

We do have four TBDs which would really be great to have a volunteer
directing the activity. And all activities can always have "back-up
assistant". So keep us in mind, those who have not volunteered for an
activity.

Again, thanks for all of you who have "stepped up" to make our DIVA
Gathering have variety which makes for a dynamic week.

Activity sign-up:

DLV 2012 activity sign-up will begin the first week in April. This
is just over two weeks away and our main job the next couple of
weeks is to get all of the blanks filled in regarding this.

We will most likely do a test activity sign-up mailing to members
of the ORG list prior to sending out to the Teeming Millions in
order to test and shake things down.

Please take a look at the table below. This lists the type of
sign-up for your activities. If you want to review what the types
of sign-up are and mean, you can look here:

Please review, carefully, thet type of sign-up currently assigned
to your activity, and let us know if some other type of sign-up
would be more appropriate.

it does sound like a very low-stress event for a newcomer to volunteer
for... presuming a male that is not really either G or B or L or T would

You're on the list.

As to the term "host(ess)" [sic], I've been using that for years
in that form, spelled and punctuated that way. A quick "grep"
through the archives of this list show it all the way back in
2004. "Host", when used as a verb, is considered neuter in gender
but I've always tried to be appropriate in the context of DLV and
I use that altered term. (Most dictionaries do not even list the
word "hostess" as a verb.) That term is not as bad as "man", used
as a verb (as in "to man the sign-in desk") and is likely to get
some unfastidious responses in this day and age. To "staff" is
more appropriate. :) Oh well ...

Margaritaville update:

Sabrina writes:

Hi, just a couple of things... I noticed my last update got missed.

Gabi will no longer be hostess for Margaritaville on Sunday. Its
coming back to me and Sue Leighton will be my co-hostess. Gabi had
concerns about her travel plans.

I would be interested in having a sign up for Margarittaville. It can
be voluntary, and its not manadatory, it would be nice to know who is
coming so I can watch for them. Margarittaville does no reservations
so the numbers are not needed for anything other than giving the
servers a heads up and to put some tables together etc. Sunday's are
traditionally their slowest night, if they have a slow night.

Also I plan on going to the hike and should have a couple of seats
available if anyone is interested in a ride.

Hiking:

Gabi and Bob, please touch base with each other and finalize the day
and time for the hike. We really hate to have a conflict for one of
the key volunteers for the activity!

I must have missed the fact that the day of the hike has been changed
to Thursday. I will try to make it but it is doubtful as I have other
commitments that day sorry. I probably should not be listed as a co
host.

On the sign up for the hike, we need to know who is willing to use their
vehicle for a car-pool to and from.

There is a $7.00 fee per car. There is also a 14 mile loop, with vantage
points to see some really great scenery. Round trip will be approx. 50
miles, so donations for gas and entry fee will be appreciated or just a
nominal $5.00 per person should more than cover the expenses.

Big Sister volunteers needed:

We would like to ask all of you, particularly those who will not
be coordinating an activity this year, to consider being a Big
Sister to one or more newcomers, either prior to or during DLV.

We need to have a pool of volunteers which exceeds the number of
Big Sister requests in order to be able to do a "best-fit" match
instead of a first-fit or a last-resort-fit.

As a Big Sister, you can have things your way. You decide if you
will be available to Little Sisters prior to DLV, during DLV, or
both. You can also decide upon and set limits upon what you will
be willing to do for your Little Sister(s).

Please consider this.

You can volunteer either by filling out the Big Sister Volunteer
screen by following the link which was sent to you when you
registered, or else by e-mailing bigsister_at_geekbabe.com

Of the two options, it's best to use the screen since it
asks a number of important questions to be used when matching
with potential Little Sisters.
