Org List:

This is the DLV 2012 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Big thanks:

Thanks are in order to those who have recently volunteered to
coordinate or assist!

If you will review our working schedule, you'll see that it has
taken shape very nicely over the past few weeks and it appears
that we're actually ahead of where we usually are at this point
in time, just over two months out from the big event. Thanks to
all who have made this happen.
. . . . .

For those who have activities in the works, or have volunteered
to host(ess) something that is not yet on the schedule, please
select a timeslot as soon as you can.

Coordinators, please check the Coordinator listing at the bottom
of this mailing and be sure all of your assistants are properly
noted.
. . . . .

Our big job over the next month or so is to fill in the weak
spots to round out things and tweak schedules and timing in a
few places to assure a smooth-running event.
. . . . .

Activity sign-up is set to start Sunday, April 1. In order for
this to happen, every activity which needs a sign-up or a hoop
jump needs to be solid as to day/time, location, price, and
methods of payment as of that time.

For those who are new to coordinating activities, we try to
roll up all activity sign-up into this one process.

When activity sign-up closes, we provide lists of those who are
signed up to all Coordinators affected. If you need to, as a
Coordinator, you can view the sign-ups at any time during the
sign-up process.

We have four levels of sign-up, and you, the Coordinator of the
activity picks which one is to be used. These are:

1. "Sign-up requested for headcount." This is to give you an
approximate level of interest in your activity. It's stated on
the screen that signing-up is not a commitment to attend and
that attending without signing up is cool. This is for activities
where you want a rough headcount of how many will participate.

2. "Sign-up requested." This is where you, the Coordinator, wants
a reasonably-accurate count of the number participating and/or the
names of those who will be participating.

3. "Sign-up required." This is for an activity which is normally
not open to those not signed up in advance. We state that sign-up
is a commitment to attend, participate, and in some cases pay.

4. "Pre-Payment Required." This is for activities where advance
payment (either before DLV or during DLV) is required from all
who will be participating. Golf and the Limo Tour are the two best
examples. For this sign-up option, very explicit payment info
needs to be stated.

These sign-up options are color-coded on the activity sign-up
screen and on the new tabular schedule.

If you will be needing a sign-up for your activity, please be
thinking of which of the above options you will need.

Another sign-up option which may apply to various activities is
the "Additional Action Required" option, which is also color-coded
on the sign-up screen. This is usually something along the line of
a ticket purchase or some other kind of a hoop-jump necessary to
participate in the activity.

We'll be going over activity sign-up in some depth as April 1
approaches.
. . . . .

Latest numbers:

As of Thursday morning, we have a sign-up count of 143. The rush of
warm newcomer registrations is over and we're now seeing a steady
trickle of one new registrant every 1-2 days. "Cold newcomer"
registration opens on or about March 1, so we'll see a spurt at that
time.

We're now up to a SO sign-up rate of just over 16%, up a bit since
the last time this was checked.

Only two cancellations this year so far. Lower than in previous
years at about this time in the cycle.

Mailing list joins are very consistent, about one per day.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
JoAnn Sez:

Don't quote me or hold me accountable, but I am "without words" to
express how wonderful you all are who have stepped up and volunteered to
make the Diva Week 2012 another "happening".

To repeat a previous statement: I would hope you will be looking to
recruit a volunteer during Diva Week to assist you in the coordination
of your event this year [unofficial role and next year in a more formal
role].

I would like to also support Annie's statement made below in this
e-mail, to paraphrase----"... the Org Group looks for those of you who
step-up and organize an event...". The joy and fruits of all
activities is the "thanks" from those who attend our activity. *

With care and 'special' thanks to ALL !

JoAnn

Beginner activities:

There's been quite a bit of chatter both on and off line in
regards to a few certain activities planned with beginners
in mind. "Beginner" here is pretty much self-defined and does
include people such as those who are new to DLV, those who are
new to public exposure, those who need a degree of coaching, etc.,
and anyone who feels uneasy about participating in any way.

We would like to expand on the idea of the Beginner Open House
which has been presented in recent years, but have just a bit
more structure and specifically target the needs of those who
are relatively new.

I like this suggestion. I would be glad to dress fancy as you
suggested, (you know I can handle that :-) )I think Sunday or
Monday afternoon at a resturant would be a great time for the
event.

>From looking at your proposed schedule, Sunday looks the most
empty, I would have NO problem with that day since I plan to be
there a few weeks early anyway. I could also do monday as an
alternate day, if sunday will not work out.

The Artisan would be the perfect place if they do not have a
problem with us.
. . . . .

Cynthia writes:

Since our traditional Beginner Open House hasn't been scheduled
and other options have been proffered, I would be more than happy
to host a Beginner Social and Art Tour at Artisan Bar on Monday,
beginning at say 3:00ish. If Jane would be willing to help me as
co-host for a few hours, I think it would work perfectly as a great
intro. to all our newcomers.

The only schedule conflict I see is with the Mob Museum Tour at
4:00ish (which is going to be a heck of a lot of fun for a lot of
you since you will get to see Las Vegas' second and newest Mob Museum
The original one is located just one short block east, it's called
City Hall.).

Around 6:00 or so we can break up and head for the bright lights
downtown, to our respective dining venues and our Welcome Celebration.

If this is your first Diva and you just want to relax and revel in
your abandon and drink absinthe with me, I, and hopefully, Jane,
will be on duty at Artisan Bar at 3:00ish on Monday.

Jane, you'll have just returned from New Orleans and the Mardi Gras,
where you've been since Christmas; you can do this blindfolded.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie writes:

We have suggestions for Beginner Open House sessions for Sunday,
Monday, and Tuesday and the consensus off line is to do all of
them. :)

The way they fit on the schedule those days they flow quite
nicely into dinner on Sunday, the Welcome Celebration on Monday
(we do have a volunteer to round them up and get them headed in
the direction of downtown), and Eating Out Night on Tuesday.

The suggestion for a Beginner Dinner fits quite well on Sunday
and also on Tuesday.

We'll also want to expand on the "What Is A ..." announcements
as the time approaches.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Moroccan dining:

Rosada writes:

> Since you said 10-15, we'll assume a smaller affair on Tuesday.
> If you want this in another timeslot, yell.

I was thinking either Tuesday or Wednesday, but the ultimate
decider would be making the schedule work, as well as offering
the ladies a nice selection of interesting dining options to
choose from.

> It will be very difficult to gauge the actual level of
> interest for something like this prior to activity sign-up.

I think I'll wait to see what the interest level and demand look
like after in early April.
. . . . . . . . . .

You could fairly easily port this to Wednesday (or Sunday) but
the most significant need as of this time is for Tuesday. Please
let us know if you want to switch the timeslot.

Mexican dining:

Gabi writes:

I am listed as a dinner option for Tuesday evening and the mexican
option. I would like to hostess a mexican dinner that night. I need
ideas for a place.
. . . . . . . . . .

Chapala's is the one we used last year. It's at 3331 E Tropicana,
phone 702-451-8141. Last years Mexican dining rated 4.47 for
enjoyment and 4.86 for comfort, which are both quite good. There
are others but this one has a recent track record. For a smaller
group, there should be very little formality getting a reservation.

Yes, there's always Las Palmas. :) (Right, Bob?) :) :) :)

Any other suggestions, anyone?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
We can go hiking on Tuesday:

.. or Wednesday, or Thursday ... :)

Gabi writes:

I would love to do the the hike with Bob. I have a couple other ladies
with cars interested if we get a good response.

I would like to have a sign up for this.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Gabi.

Please work with Bob (and Sabrina) and select a timeslot for this.
As of this time all days may work, depending on what you want to do.
Please let us know when to place it on the schedule. Also, if you
want to have a carpool rendezvous point in the city, please select
one and let us know as we'll want to note it on the schedule and
the maps.

This will be a great opportunity to get out of the Brown El-Lay
Haze for a while. Our "outdoorsy" activities have been few and
far between in recent years and this will, of course, add to the
variety of activities we offer to out people. :)

Opening thoughts, group photos:

Mardi writes:

Has anybody had the idea of the welcome celebration at bahama
breeze, in the past they did not want the opening and closing
at the same place, but with the trouble were having with the
opening this is just a idea.

Can we have two group photos, because of the late first group
photos and the golfers that have to get up early to play golf
the next day, and golf is the earliest of all events.

Is there two mob museum's I went to the one at the Trop. last
year.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

We've discussed using Bahama Breeze twice, twice. :) :) :)

We talked about it when the Hard Rock pulled the rug from under
us in 2010. We talked about it again when we became aware that
Firefly would not be re-opening at the Plaza in 2011.

IIRC, the conclusion of why it's a Bad Thing<tm> was along two
lines. First, the "been there, done that" aspect would spoil
the turnout at the second BB activity. Second, if ANYTHING
caused the first BB activity to be a failure (incident, food
issues, poor service, whatever) it would absolutely KILL the
turnout at the second.

We're really not having trouble finding a place for our opener,
more like we're having trouble finding a place that most will
agree to. One venue was removed from consideration due to a
perceived "bad neighborhood" issue. Another has, other than the
contractual speed-bump issues, its share of detractors, and the
one we voted to accept is far from universally liked.

As I look back, I've heard pre-event concerns about the Blue Ox,
Firefly, and Artisan, and all of those WCs worked very well.

Yes, we can probably do two Official Group Photos, and I'll be
willing to coordinate both, subject, of course, to getting enough
of the other volunteers to help with herding the ca^H^Hattendees
and such. :) First one can either be at Neonopolis or on the
street at FSE. Second one can be at or outside BB.

There are not two Mob Museums. The "real" Mob Museum is the one
that just opened downtown. The one at the Tropicana was a Mob
EXHIBIT, not a museum. I'm not sure if that one is still open.

Late note: AP article on Feb. 15 states that the Mob Exhibit
at the Tropicana has closed due to low ticket sales but the
promoters state that it will re-open.

Katie writes:

Hi All.

I already sent in my request a few weeks ago to help hostess the
opener which will mean that at an event like this I will be at the
door on my feet for e few hours. I even had a thank you from
Cynthia for my help in that area.

I assumed that we already had 2 organizers so my help would not be
needed there. My wife always accompanies me to Vegas and doesn't
accompany Katie so this means I have to devide my time between DLV
and my family which in turn means I can't do a lot to help organize
things on the ground.

I was hoping the opener would be at a place like the Artisan instead
of a bowling alley environment which means hoards of Kids and even
worse. Teenagers...... I won't say another word on this and leave the
steady flow in motion for the downtown location, but I wish that you
had told us the in depth details of the Artisans unreasonable approach
before now.

I religiously read my DLV mailings so I am sure I haven't missed this
info on the Artisan, Although I Did have to Re-send my new e-mail
address in as I missed a few votes and mailings during the warm up
period so this may have happened. I am still willing to help to
hostess the door and the room for the opener if I am needed.
. . . . . . . . . .

You don't have to worry about Drink And Drag being the typical
neighborhood bowling alley with kids screaming, teenagers smoking
and trashing the pool room, unshaven men in wife-beaters cursing
when they miss a spare, the racket of balls, pins, etc. It will be
21 and over only and bowling, with only a few lanes, as one of
several entertainment options.

Yes, we do have a crew. A few more than two, actually, who have
been supporting the efforts of Cami, Cynthia, and others off line
to come up with a refinement of the original plan. This plan was
outlined here and the group voted to accept it.

We, as volunteers, need to support the efforts of the other
volunteers who take the initiative to do the "heavy lifting" to
plan things such as the Welcome Celebration.

Furthermore, we can't say to Cami: We don't like your proposal, so
YOU (Cami and assistants) will have to arrange something else. That's
not the way we work.

Anyone who does not like what was proposed and wants to see an
alternative needs to be saying something along the line of "I don't
like your proposal AND I am willing to contact {whatever} and do
the heavy lifting to make arrangements for something else."

This "heavy lifting" (in this case, phoning or visiting vendors,
explaining the nature of our group, negotiating terms, etc.) is
something that very few of our volunteers want to do!

We really owe a debt of gratitude to those who are willing to do
the active reaching-out to vendors and such. They are in the
minority in our volunteer community and deserve some special
recognition.
. . . . . . . . . .

Bob writes:

We just took this vote and I wonder how many of you know that
Drink and Drag is not only not open, but doesn't have an opening
date set yet as of Friday, when I talked to their main office.
A reliable source told me that she talked to a construction
supervisor last year and they were supposed to open just before
hanksgiving and then again before Xmas. I also wonder if the
people who called for this vote will print this.
. . . . . . . . . .

Of course we'll print this. There's no reason not to and we can
assure you and the group that nothing underhanded or deceitful
is intended.

We've been aware of the status of Drink And Drag all along, and
I (Annie) brought up the subject early in the process, expressing
the exact same concerns you did, most likely coming from the very
same sources.

I (Annie) wrote to the group:

+Please don't shoot the messenger. I really don't know if this
+is something we should be concerned about, but word on the
+street, actually word on one of the LV message forums, is that
+the state of Drink And Drag is iffy, not being open yet (Is it
+open? I sure don't know for sure.) and missing two scheduled
+grand openings.

I then quoted a post I had read on the topic.

Cami responded:

+I have reviewed all your comments and appreciate the feedback.
+I will continue to pursue D&D with diligence and address all
+concerns in the process. I did specifically ask about D&D's
+opening date and Landon said it would be in Feb. and to not be
+concerned about that as an issue.

Cami will be keeping an eye on the situation, and if it appears
our plans are in jeopardy, she will let us know sooner rather
than later.

The group is in agreement that we do need to cover our bases and
set some limits. JoAnn and I agree that the end of February is
the milestone at which we will need to make a possibly difficult
decision.

Two "Plan B" options have been discussed, one which is sure to
elicit some grumbling, but will definitely be workable.

The trigger has been pulled on Plan A, but if we have a need to
re-group and consider other options, everyone will have input
and all who are willing to do that "heavy lifting" will be able
to do so in pursuit of a replacement.

Bahama Breeze ending, photos, and Lunch With Alanna:

Alanna writes (edited and assembled):

I have an update on final night at Bahama Breeze.

Just like last year someone willing to sign a contract and leave
a deposit has booked the main floor (gazebo). This happen last year
as well, but the other party dropped out and gave up the room.

We are currently booked for full menu, separate checks, at a 18%
gratuity per check. We are booked for the west indies room. This
is how BB does business. There is an excellent chance the other
party will cancel and if they do we have been guaranteed the room
next.

The sticking point is our love of the individual check and wanting
full menu selection.

Please put a call out to anyone that would like to offer services
at the final event. The photo opportunity was successful last year.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks for the updates, Alanna.

We do appreciate you taking the lead on this.

Sara? If your photographer friend (Diana?) is interested in doing
the photo thing this year, please pass this on, with the caveat,
again, that we may not get the spacious accommodations and may
not know if we will or will not until very close to show time.
. . . . . . . . . .

Alanna continues:

I can host a lunch on Sunday and/or any day Ginger would like to
step away from being the host.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks for volunteering for this. :) That will give Ginger a few
days off if she wishes.

Alanna, do you have any preference for which days to host(ess)
the lunch?

Ginger? Do you have any preference for days you want off? (We
do know that Ginger is out of town until next Tuesday so we may
not get a response on this during this current list cycle.)

Or, do we simply alternate days?

As of this minute and second we have Alanna down for Sunday and
Ginger down for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Our
Volunteere Recognition Luncheon is the "official" group lunch
on Wednesday and JoAnn and Rosada are doing that one.

Also, the lunch venues for the Lunch With Ginger/Alanna are just
place-holders. Please let us know if you want these changed.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Clubbing and crawling:

Nikki writes:

Pencil me in for tuesday night for late night clubbing and bar crawl.
Sorry for the late response.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Nikki. They are both on the schedule. Please look over
the schedule and let us know if things need to be adjusted. Also,
please pick a start point for the Bar Crawl.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Themes:

Nikki writes:

I saw some talk about themed events the last few years and was wondering
if a zombie themed activity/walk/anything has ever been done during DLV.

I'm like so into zombies. Could do a mainstream walk down the Strip,
Freemont St or how about Zombie Apocalypse Bar Crawl?

This may be a little too out of box theatrical for most. Just
brainstorming. Any thoughts?
. . . . . . . . . .

Zombies? Well, maybe that theme could be adopted for the Bar Crawl.

"Theme" activities have been done off and on over the DLV years
with Red Shoe Night maybe resulting in 60% of the people having
some kind of red shoes that night, including Yours Truly, if
pink sneaks count. :)

Retro Night at the old Elvis club maybe got 25% or so of the
people to dress retro.

And then there was Blonde Hair Day. :)

And then (LOL) there were a few theme activities which never
got any traction, such as the Nunfest and the DLV Funeral. (The
first word in funeral is FUN!)

Seriously, if you want to do a theme thing, just do it! :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Margaritaville update:

Sabrina writes:

Hi, Small change on Margaritaville, I spoke with Gabi about co-hosting
and I think we are switching roles. Gabi will host and I will co-host or
do joint hostiing, anyway it will be covered for sure. Also Sue Leighton
will also be sharing in the hosting of the event as well so it should be
a fun time had by all. Last year it was figured for 17-18 guests and we
had all of that and more. Multiple hosts works well for that location
since we are up on the third floor, it usually takes one person down
stairs to direct traffic upstairs, and another person on the third floor
and this year we will also have one in the bar!

Also I will be co-hosting the Glamour Boutique open house with Holly,
and will most likely co-host a hike at Red Rock Canyon with Gabi if it
gets put together, and if not I think we will go anyway if anyone is
interested.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks Sabrina.

Please check the Coordinator listing toward the bottom of this mailing
to be sure all of this is properly recorded.

Harmony Nail Spa Open House:

Paula writes:

Hi Annie, hope all is well. Just reviewing the days will send info in
next day or so. We will offer something nice as usual. Thank you for
your consideration hope Diva is fun for everyone! You do such a great
job keep up the good work. Thank you
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

Thanks Paula.

I'll copy the ORG group to keep them in the loop.

Please let us know which day/hours you want. Only item we will be
concerned about is that we have commercial open houses scheduled
for Monday and Wednesday so we prefer that you select any other
day.

It appears that I will be your go-between this year if that is ok. :)

Thanks again.
