Org List:

This is the DLV 2006 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not

Loose ends:

We can't get the final headcount until we have the reports from the
other sign-up sheets. I have Tootsye's and Mardi's names. I still need
the others.
. . . . .

Within the next week I'll be sending out a special mailing to ORG to
get the transition process rolling. I would like to ask those who
wish to be more involved to please go over this carefully.

Starting to wrap up:

Overall, I think everybody deserves a big "atta-girl" this year. Almost
everything came off as planned. Almost all reports are very good.

There are actually very few shortcomings that I can think of this year.

I would like to open the floor here in ORG for discussion and recap
regarding DLV 2006 from an organizational perspective.

Specifically, things like ...

* What activities worked, what did not work, which should be repeated,
and which should be ash-canned.

* Which vendors were worthy of our business, which were not, and, of
course, ideas for places to go where we have not gone yet.

* Thoughts about the size of DLV and the length of DLV, etc.

* Our volunteer force. Do we have enough volunteers to continue with
an event of the usual size and length?

* Our suggested hotels. Did our people like them? Were there any
major issues?

* Secondary programs such as Big Sisters, roommate matching, ride
sharing. Did these work the way we intended?

* Our model. Recreational and participatory activities only. Unpaid
registration. Each activity autonomous.

* Any other organizational items you want to bring up.
. . . . .

I hope to have the formal survey on line by next week. If anybody has
any questions that should be asked, other than the usual ones, please
let me know.

As last year there will be a volunteer submission form at the end of
the survey, and we'll have the big Call For Volunteers a bit later
this month.

Issues and incidents:

>From an organizational perspective, although it was not as bad as last
year, we still had a flurry of changes and additions in the last couple
weeks. This caused me a lot of extra work as I had to adjust maps and
schedules many times.

I did hear complaints about not being able to check in. I admit that I
am one of those at fault, since I did not pick up my "kit" for some of
the activities where I was covering check-in. :( Opportunity for
improvement here.
. . . . .

B/D/R issues and incident:

I think that in most cases the behavior, dress, and restroom usage was
commendable. I noticed very specifically that (most) members of the
group blended well at the Sahara. I commended one in particular for
using the restroom properly at Hard Rock (went in, did it, got out).

Here are the issues and incidents that I'm aware of.

1. Our first "86" in the history of DLV, Bahama Breeze. obviously
inappropriate dress. Offender was told to leave and did comply.
IMAO, this person appeared to be flagrantly challenging the rule.

Wow, no number 2. :) That was our only real incident. A number of
issues, minor to moderate, were reported and observed.

A number of the reports were general and specific and regarded
individuals being "too obvious" in mainstream situations in various
ways.

We had a few people trying that "too natural" look, which really does
not work. Things like hair not appropriately styled or not long enough
to be styled, obvious beard shadow, close fitting clothing worn with no
padding or control, etc. This was reported and observed personally. I'm
not talking about isolated cases of one of the above, but cases where
most of the above combine to give the "that's a guy" look.

Loud talking in mainstream locations and other various "guy-mode"
deportment. Etiquette while eating. Again, reported and observed
several times.

Wow, if things like this are our most reported issues, I think we did
rather well overall! :)
. . .

There were a number of reports (and observations) of dress that was
not really appropriate for time, place, and circumstance. Those cases
I observed appeared to be naivete, cluelessness, vivid imagination, or
combinations of those, and not really blatant disregard of the rules.

Things like overdressing in mainstream, outfits not really age or size
appropriate, overall looks that just did not work, etc.
. . .

Congregating and parading in groups. AAAARRRRGGGGHHH!!!!! Enough said!
. . .

There were several reports of various individuals being too "clingy" and
intrusive, not giving others their space.

I would like to speak very freely here. Although I never had a case
where one (or more) was clingy to me enough to be annoying, toward the
end of the week I did begin to feel somewhat crowded.

If I appeared a bit standoffish or runoffish toward the end of the week,
please accept my apology. I badly needed some breathing room, and I do
appreciate being granted some. I really hate being rude or short with
those I dearly admire.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
What worked:

IMAO, most everything did, so this will be briefer than in years past.
I would like to make just a few comments.

            10:00am Death Valley Tour

Moderate time issues. Slow getting on the road, mainly due to the
assembly point issue. Traffic tie-ups getting out of town.

            6:00pm Happy Hour (Suede)
            7:30pm Dinner (Suede)
            8:30pm Welcome Celebration (Suede)

Suede is a very nice place, and I think the Monday opening for our group
worked well.

10:30am Lake Mead Boat Cruise (Lake Mead)

I think the combination of inaccurate weather reports and the assembly
point confusion issue spoiled the turnout on this one. :(

5:30pm Night of the Soiled Doves III

The best NSD so far! This one really worked! :)

            7:30pm Lucky Chengs (Lucky Chengs)

I didn't attend, but I sure heard about it. Mostly complaints of small
portions, disorganized service, blatant solicitation of gratuities, too
much smoke, payment hassles.

I heard all kinds of reports from "it was OK" to "it sucked", but nobody
seemed to rave about it.

            7:00pm EON Milano's option (Milano's)

This is the only one I can comment on, but I thought it worked well and
we did not overwhelm them this year. I think having many choices worked
quite well.

            8:30pm Alternative Bar Crawl (Various)

This snowballed. We ended up picking up more and more people at each
stop. I think everybody had a good (or too good) time. :)

            9:00pm Limo Tour (Riviera)

Other than traffic issues and one limo breaking down, this came off very
well. We got started on time and other than the first stop kept on time.
Zero no-shows! :)

            2:00am Charles Bar (Bellagio)

Reports (and observations) of some being "too obvious" but no incidents.

4:30pm Wedding Ceremony (Viva Las Vegas Chapel)
            6:00pm Wedding Reception (Bahama Breeze)

This was a very nice addition to our lineup of activities and I think it
worked well.

            7:00pm Dinner (Bahama Breeze)

Nice place, great food, and a great turnout. It appears to me that the
menu is more American and less Caribbean this year. We overflowed our
area by quite a bit. :)

            1:00pm SBS Social (HM)

I think this worked very well. I didn't hear any complaints about the
food this year.

            9:00pm Buck Wild show (Sahara)

It's an OK show. Entertaining and good to see once. I'm really not in to
the Charlie Whiskey scene, but I enjoyed it. I would have hoped for a
better turnout from the DLV group.

7:00pm Going-away Dinner (Hard Rock CAFE)

Smaller crowd but I think it worked very well. No issues that I am aware
of. I enjoyed this more just ordering off the regular menu than having
the limited choice thing.

Comments, gang.
