As you probably noticed, there was no ORG mailing last week. This is the
slow time of our year. The only major item on our plate now is the
schedule -- we're in the middle of the Call For Comments, and no
objections have been raised so far.
. . . . .

It looks like I will be in Las Vegas sometime in mid to late September
on business, and as we've done before, I would like to have a
get-together, very informal, drinks, maybe dinner. I'm thinking of
something like just meeting at Steven Davids some Friday or Saturday
unless the local people prefer something else.

Any other suggestions?

I'll let the group know as plans become more solid.
. . . . .

For those going to Pinkfest, Southwest recently lowered some fares over
the Pinkfest period. I just booked at $36 each way, which is the lowest
I've ever seen. I can't drive for that. Some other cities have similar
rates, but not all.

I see this movement toward an "event hotel" as being twofold in origin.

The first driving factor is a well-intended idea to employ the group's
bargaining power to save $$$ for everybody. The problem is that they
don't realize that the Las Vegas hotel pricing models are totally
different than those they are familiar with. Over and over we've been
quoted "special group rates" that can be beaten by anybody with a peecee
and 5 minutes to spare.

The second factor I've had partly explained to me, but it never seems
finite, and that is to create some kind of degree of closeness, both
physically and cerebrally, between the attendees. It's even been
suggested that we look into blocking entire floors or sections, as is
sometimes done at the conventions, and some have expressed the desire
to have that "dorm" atmosphere that also sometimes occurs at the
conventions. IMAO, we want our people to be out doing the activities
and not hanging out in their rooms!

Groups of TG people do indeed attract attention. There's also the
propensity of our people to congregate in groups as if drawn to each
other by some mysterious force of gravity.

I would think that a place like the Sahara would be large enough so
somebody who didn't want attention could easily get lost in the crowd.
That's been my perception, although I have noticed groups of our people
(the operative word being "groups") getting attention, and some have
remarked that the group as a whole is too conspicuous there.

While I do see the advantage to suggestion hotels for those who either
don't know the area or want to stay where others are staying, I don't
think we need to be going on that futile search for Special Group
Rates<tm>.

Spamalot is a musical comedy produced by the Monty Python folks. It's
been getting very good reviews in NYC.

Yes, there is a connection between Spamalot and the drek known as Spam
which clogs the e-mail system. They both derive their name from one
particular Monty Python skit which involves Spam, the meat product.

The end of an era, but I'm sure it won't be the end of a DLV legend! :)

If you don't know the story, read about it here:
