DLV 2005 timeframe vote:

On July 25, that's this coming weekend, a special "ballot" mailing will
be sent out to everybody on this list. This is a call for votes for our
DLV 2005 dates.

Since as of this time there's only one "candidate" on the ballot, it
will be a simple yes/no on the one nominated timeframe, unless another
nomination should sneak in over the next couple of days.

Even though this does not appear to be a contested issue, I would
encourage everybody to vote. If the one nominated timeframe is indeed
the one selected, I would like to see it be clearly designated as such,
on the record, by a clear majority vote of the group here.

The one candidate timeframe is Sunday, April 24 thru Saturday, April 30,
2005.

When you send in your vote, I would encourage you to cc: yourself, so
you will have a copy of your vote with the Message-Id:, which is used
for tracking.

After the ballots are sent out, the polls will remain open until a 48
hour period elapses with no votes being received. Vote early (vote
often). :)

Other discussion items:

There are a few other issues that I want to be sure get their time on
the floor while we are in the slack phase of the DLV planning cycle.

1. Bars/clubs, in particular the calling for more mainstream and more
upscale in our selection if same.

2. Hotels, in particular the calling for more concentration of our
people in one central or official hotel.

3. SO activities. This seems to be a topic of interest at certain times,
but often ends up on the back burner.

I'm bringing these topics up to get the discussion started, but it will
be up to you, those who see any of these items as priorities, to take
the ball and run with it.

(Hint: Now, not next March!) :) :)
. . . . .

As to bars/clubs, I want to see places selected that will encourage
optimal turnout. If a mainstream casino bar or stand-alone bar-bar will
do this, I'm all for it.

Personally, I'm comfortable most anywhere ... well, I'm not so much of a
fan of the Las Vegas Lounge, which I put in the same class as the Atomic
or Western ... but I do think that certain places will give us a better
turnout than others. I think a place that's too exposed to a mainstream
casino crowd will scare many of our people off, not to mention the
restroom issues. I also think a place with $3-ish drinks will attract
and keep more of our people than would a place with $8-ish drinks.

Soooo ... I'm throwing this ball to those of you who see it as a
priority to go more mainstream and more upscale for our bar/club
activities. Please discuss, and please suggest types of places and
specific places. Whether it's in addition to, or in place of some of
our defaults, it's up to you.
. . . . .

As to hotels ... personally, I don't consider this to be high on the
priority list, but I'm not everybody. If it were totally up to me I
would just say that everybody's on their own to pick their own hotel,
but I do see the need to suggest places to those who don't know Las
Vegas well, and for those who want/need to stay where others will be
staying.

As to "reserving a floor" for DLV and such, I don't see the need for it,
but if people want it, and somebody wants to coordinate it, it will
happen.

I do think we may have OD'd on our number of suggested midscale hotels
this last year. Four: IP, Sahara, San Remo, Strat.

The bottom line is that this group will select (vote) on the hotels we
suggest, and that will determine how many, what scale, and which
properties.

As to such things as group rates, reserved floors, it will be up to
those of you who want to see these happen to make them happen, if you
like.
. . . . .

As to SO activities, I know we have several SO's who read this list, and
even more who have SO's who attend read this. Please be thinking about
strategies to welcome SO's to DLV and to encourage them to participate
both in regular DLV activities and special SO activities.

It's not too early to start thinking of specific SO activities.

Proposed DLV Dates in Conflict with IFGE:

I really think that DLV and IFGE attract different crowds, so I'm not
too concerned about IFGE siphoning off our attendees. If I were running
the IFGE thing, I might be concerned about it happening the other way
around, however. :)

I hope the choice is not too difficult for you to make. :) :) :)

Big Sister:

Nora writes:

Ok, sounds like a plan. Crystal, I assume your e-mail on file is good
for Big Sister traffic? We have the mail address bigsister@geekbabe.com
forward to the Big Sister Coordinators.

>Do you think it will tend to Brooklynize the operation?

Yeah, whadaboutit? :)

Kenny's show:

Densie writes:

>it's still around and no one else wants to pick it up, I'll take it.

Ok, you're on the list. Thanks. :) I've added it on Thursday, since the
show only runs Thursday and Friday so far. When we start the preliminary
schedule (just a few weeks, actually) or if they add other evenings, you
can move it if you want.

DLV Logo Shop:

T-shirts and MORE!

Dorothy writes (partly from a conversation):

That looks SUPER, Dorothy, an excellent selection of items!

I assume it's open for business, correct?

>Looks great! I think we are all set and good to go. Thanks for thinking

>Your Heart bra) that this does not turn into a disaster.

I put the disclaimer in so that we don't end up playing go-between for
customer support. Since they are making the $$$ on this, that's their
job.

>Thank you for all of your help and information. You have been and are a
>great help to one and all! Thanks, Annie.

And thank YOU for taking the initiative on the logo gear. I think this
is gonna prove to be very popular.

I'll get a note out with the URL in the next general mailing.

Thanks again. I'm sure there will be a demand for these.

There is now a link from the main DLV page. The Logo Shop splash page is:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/logoshop.html

>The size for the baseball cap logo is 5" x 2" centered

Ok, about the best I can do on that is 750x600 pixels, which comes to
2.5" wide x 2" high at 300dpi. It's on the net at:

http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/dlv05jm01s.png

You can go ahead and take a look at that.

Oh, one note to everybody. Check sizing carefully before you order!
Sizes seem to vary by product quite a bit and run on the small side of
things.

DLV logo pins:

Yvonne writes (from DLVDISC):

>OK...since there isn't much discussion... I'll throw out this idea to
>get opinions....

>I like the idea of the design on shirts.

>How do you folks feel about having a logo pin? say a 1/2 inch to an 1
>inch in size?

I think there would most likely be a demand for these. The burst of
chatter over the past couple days on the discussion forum demonstrates
this.

#include <standard_answer.h>

>It'll involve a cost, and the logistics on how needs to be worked out,
>but what I was wondering is there enough interest in doing something
>like this, or is it too much work?

It will be up to those who volunteer to take on the project to decide
how much work is too much work. :)

Are you volunteering? :)

>The pin can be placed anywhere like caps, hats, etc...

>Just off the yahoo search, take a look at http://www.gifts2promote.com/

I took a look at their site. Prices look good, but from what I saw, the
minimums are quite high, like 500 items.

>There are probably more businesses to choose from, but they are out
>there... maybe locally in someones town that on this discussion/org
>group listings.

Yes, and if you or somebody else wants to do a bit of homework and
run with this idea, please go ahead.

>just an idea...

Yes, but most great things were "just an idea" at one time. :)
