Org List:

This is the DLV 2005 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Ongoing activity database appears on the web at:

Misc items:

Polls are still open ...

If you have not submitted a vote regarding our proposed DLV 2005 dates,
please do so.

Even though this is not a highly-contested issue, your vote is requested.
If you did not receive a "ballot" last Sunday, please let me know.

If necessary, the July-August general mailing will be held until this
vote is final.

A brief special mailing to the ORG list will be made when the vote is
final, and prior to the general mailing.

SOM update:

It appears that "Tiny Bubbles" will indeed remain with the LV cast of
Showgirls Of Magic for the near future. The new show that Tiny was
supposed to be transferred to was cancelled or postponed before it
opened, so there's a good chance that Tiny will indeed be with the SOM
show next April.

Virii from geekbabe.com addresses:

I've turned off the roommate@geekbabe.com, bigsister@geekbabe.com and a
few other addresses for now to prevent any of the recent virii from
being forwarded to volunteers. One volunteer was just hit with a mailing
that definitely contained an infection. (It appears that somebody who
has both dlvgolf@geekbabe.com and roommate@geekbabe.com in their address
book is infected. The ringers in the DLV e-mail directory have not
received this --- yet -- knock on wood!)

If you receive any e-mail that contains an attachment, please don't
attempt to open it unless you are expecting it. These virii often
masquerade as coming from well-known e-mail addresses.

Again, all legitimate mail from any of the dlv*@geekbabe.com addresses
(or any of the pinkfest*@pinkmyst.com addresses) will never have
attachments or embedded graphics. If you receive mail from those
addresses that has any kind of a barnacle attached to it, it's most
certainly a forgery.

Also, as many of you know, incoming mail to dlv*@geekbabe.com is
stripped of any attachments before being sent to the list processor.

Mid scale hotels, etc.:

Diane (AZ) writes:

I don't know.

I doubt that with our current and anticipated numbers that we will ever
come close to overloading any one hotel in the near future.

I'm hearing some calls to concentrate, or at least designate one hotel
as "more official" than the others.

I also know that there are some who prefer to stay where there will
not be other DLV people staying. Those people will, of course, use
our hotel suggestions as a reverse guide on where to stay. :)

There's also a desire by some to stay in a place where they don't
have to enter and exit via a casino or large hotel lobby. I do think
we should have one place along this line, such as the Clarion.

Anyway, now is the time to discuss the hotel situation, and for those
who want things like negotiated rates and reserved floors to do some
of the homework.

We'll do the actual decision on hotels in November.

>I do agree with your comment about the Las Vegas Lounge. Coming from
>the NOSD trip to there... wow what a drop in class.

LVL is majorly skanky! Strictly school's out ya know. It was a mistake
to use it for the post-NSD thing, and yes, I'll take the heat for
proposing LVL for that.

>If the NOSD II needs another warm body and if it's not legislated out

Aiko, please take note, you have a volunteer.

I doubt if there's any threat to the industry. The anti-brothel measure
apparently will not appear on the ballot this fall, and there's too much
money in it to let it be outlawed. I understand the big roo about it in
Pahrump was really pressure to get the operator of one of the houses to
give up plans for a "Gentlemens Club" (no overt sex) near the city
center. That's what "they" tell me, anyway. :)

Golf list:

The list is actually live now. (Don't worry, it's actually quite immune
to being hijacked for virus/worm distribution.)

If you want to get golf discussion going you can just send to it, or if
you want to get more interest, we can announce it in the monthly mailing
in a few days. Please let me know on this prior to Saturday if you want
an announcement to go out, as the July-August general mailing will most
likely go out Sunday morning, assuming our vote on the timeframe is
final by that time, of course.

I'm not really married to the current process, but we did extend the
window to 48 from 24 hours.

We can consider something like this, but since the procedure for this
current vote has been already announced, and is not highly contested, I
think it's good to not change the rules in the middle of the game, and
make any changes on future votes.

This year I'm not forseeing any controversial votes coming up. Unless
something sneaks up on us, the only other planned vote this year will be
on hotels in November.

>Not sure how you would handle absentee voting in advance. :-)

People have sent in advance "absentee" votes on occasion. They were just
regular e-mail with the vote clearly noted as such.

Well, I know there won't be much happening in Austin that weekend, since
all of the important people will be in Chicago at Pinkfest. :)

Gay casino and TS pageant:

Anya sends in the following, from the {Las Vegas Review-Journal}:

(From Norm's column, last Saturday.)

+It's only a matter of time before Las Vegas has a gay casino, says
+Norbert Aleman, the French-born producer of the Riviera's long-running
+"An Evening at La Cage" and "Crazy Girls."

+"It's not sex, it's business," said Aleman, the organizer behind The
+World's Most Beautiful Transsexual Pageant, which ends tonight.

+Aleman unveiled plans Thursday at a news conference to offer the eight
+winners a show of their own, and another gay-themed "Show Boys" show is
+in the works as well, he said.

+Aleman hinted that the first gay casino is in the works. The travel
+industry and other segments are tapping into the gay market, he said,
+noting the recent success of gay cruise ships.

+Tonight's finals will be at the Royal Pavilion at the Riviera's
+Convention Center.

Thanks for sending this in, Anya. :)

Back when we first had the idea for what eventually became DLV (this was
back in late 1996) we did a bit of homework WRT which hotels in Las
Vegas were considered to be GLBT-friendly. At that time, the names
Riviera and Tropicana kept coming up because they both had hosts who
worked with the travel agents who marketed to the GLBT community.

There was also talk and speculation about a possible G{LBT} theme
casino. The conclusion at the time was that no casino operator would
risk alienating the het community by marketing a casino primarily to 10%
of the population. Conversely, however, no casino operator is going to
intentionally alienate that 10% of customers.

That was 1996, long before "Queer Eye", which is often cited as an
example of GLBT going mainstream. Who knows? My guess is that a G{LBT}
theme casino will not happen within the near future.

Of course I said the chance of the volcano erupting was ... :)
