Org List:
This is the DLV 2005 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.
Ongoing activity database appears on the web at:

A few misc. notes:
This is a resend using the new mail list processor. Please excuse any
multiple copies you may have received. The older processor is acting
very strange, so I think it's best to switch this list over to the new
one as well.
. . . . .
Just FYI, the Ovation show (the one we were supposed to see when V
closed and before V reopened) will be opening Real Soon Now at the Lady
Luck downtown. Just in case anybody wants to ... :)
. . . . .
It appears that Jenni will not be taking an active part in DLV 2005.
Nora, can you handle the Big Sister program by yourself, or do you
want to call for volunteers to assist?
. . . . .
July is the month when we vote on our proposed DLV 2005 dates. For those
new, here's how the process works.
Between now and July 25 the floor is open for discussion and additional
nominations for timeframes.
On July 25th. we'll send out a special Call For Votes "ballot" e-mail.
Everybody gets one vote, votes being sent by return mail. I always
suggest that you copy yourself when you send your ballot in, so you have
a copy with the Message-ID: in it, which is used for tracking and
verification.
When no more votes are received for a 48 hour period (changed from 24
hours last year) polls are closed and the votes are tabulated.
The results will be posted, with a partially-obfuscated listing of the
raw votes and Message-ID: lines separately toward the end.
In the July-August general mailing, we'll then announce the dates as
tentative and allow for a one-month call for comments from the general
DLV audience. If there are no serious objections, the dates then are
published as final in the August-September general mailing.

Lunch with (or without) Ginger:

Well, I think there would be some confusion, and rotating the locations
would most likely result in a different crowd each time.
Comments, gang?
Of course those staying at the Sahara are always free to eat at the
Sahara Buffet whether or not LW(o)G is there or not.
This also assumes that the Monorail will be operating by next April. :)
(Update, see below.)

Ok, I'll get a daily "Walk Your Lunch Off With or Without Ginger" on
the schedule. :)

Of course. :)
My gut feeling is that if LW(o)G is held anywhere other than at or very
near to where many of our people are staying, there will be a very
significant fallout in attendance. However (comma) only way to tell
for sure is to try it.
I can see advantages and disadvantages to rotating the location.
As far as places (buffet types) I know of near the Monorail, well, we
all know the Sahara. Let's face it, you don't go to the Sahara Buffet
for a memorable culinary experience, you go there 'cuz it's there, now,
and cheap. The best item on the menu is the company. :)
Las Vegas Hilton has an excellent breakfast buffet, but IIRC they change
to a totally-lunch menu around 11. It's also a bit more expensive than
the other buffets in the north Strip area.
One more stop up (two actually, I doubt if you wanna host lunch at the
LVCC) ... there's the IP, Harrah's and Flamingo.
IP has two buffets, the Emperor's Buffet, which they tell me (the
ubiquitous "they") is totally 144, so I've never eaten there. There's a
smaller buffet in the Teahouse Coffee Shop. You can either order off the
menu or do the buffet. I think it's ok, but I know we've had complaints
about it. They tell me (TUT) that this smaller buffet has recently
closed but has even more recently reopened.
IMAO, Harrah's is a notch up on the pecking order, but I don't know if
they have just lunch or brunch at the LW(o)G hour.
I think the best buffet overall on that corner of the Four Corners is
Flamingo. Again, I dunno if it's lunch or brunch at that hour. It's a
much nicer setting, more like a restaurant than a mess hall. Only
downside I can think of is that there's often a line, and it's in a very
tight switchback queue across the hall from the buffet entrance. It may
be a bit scary for the newly-out people.
Next stop up is Bally's and Paris. Both have buffets. I've never eaten
at either. Paris is most likely more than I would want to spend on
brunch. Aladdin is an easy walk from that stop, but, IMAO again, it's
probably more than I want to spend for brunch.
Across the Strip is Bellagio. Yet again, more than what I would wanna
spend on brunch, but I'm not everybody. The LWG could even be combined
with the traditional Bellagio Lunch if you want.
Next stop, last stop anyway, is MGM. I assume MGM has a buffet, but I've
never eaten there. San Remo is right across the street, with a very "ok"
combined buffet/coffee shop. Tropicana has a better buffet. NYNY does
not have a buffet. Excalibur does, if you wanna eat with 1000 screaming
kids and don't want to go all the way to C**2 to do so. :)
Luxor has a very OK buffet downstairs.
Now, as for the daily urban hike :) the only concern I have is the one
you mentioned, and that is the group hanging around together.
If the group would be diluted with some in boymode (as sometimes show up
for LW(o)G) it would definitely help.

Laughlin thoughts:
Densie writes:

I don't think the Laughlin trip will attract the majority of our
people. However, I think it will attract a number of them, as there
does appear to be support from within the ORG group here.
I do think that we will need something on the calendar against it for
those who want to stay in the LV area.
One thing I do like about Laughlin is that I feel like a kid again when
I'm there. :) :) :)

ROFL!
Only problem I see with doing that on a shirt is that the contrast in
the lowlights is lacking a bit.

The original artwork for the "Jellomold" logo is in .bmp format, but it's
very easy to convert to .png format. These are all line-art in black and
white. For transfer printing, a full-color version is needed. I have some
that have color in them already, and those that can be easily colored to
just about anything, but will need to be cleaned up a bit.
I took a look at the Cafepress web site and sampled the color of
their pink t-shirt as best I could. I've made three versions of the
"Jellomold" logo, adjusting the colors a bit, that I think would work.
They're on line at:
http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/dlv05jm01test2.png
http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/dlv05jm01test3.png
http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/dlv05jm01test4.png
These are very rough and will look rough on the monitor.
If you want to use any of these, I'll apply a smoothing algorithm to
soften the lines and also normalize the colors. Artwork for transfer
prints has to be much cleaner than the original art for silkscreen. That
will take a bit of manual and automated TLC to get them "camera read"
for this. :)
The current logo is almost exactly 8x10". It appears that they will
take a "landscape orientation" 8X10" master, so that will work fine.
>If you wish, I am more than willing to set up and handle a "store
>front" with Cafepress offering the DLV logos that you have. Let me know
>what you would like to do.
Oh yes, I do wish. :) :)
I think the big questions are, what do you want to sell and when.
Do you want to standardize on one style/logo or offer multiple options?
Do you want to offer just a generic (no dates) t-shirt or something like
a DLV 2004 commemorative shirt, kind of like we did up until DLV 2000?
And, do you want to offer such things as mugs, hats, mouse pads ...?
Or, other suggestions such as imbibing nuns, saluting nuns, and toking
nuns? :)

I really don't think an overnight trip would attract many of our people,
particularly those who are already paying for a hotel room in Las Vegas.
However, I'm not everybody, and some might go for it.
It would be an even worse situation for those who go, then decide on the
fly (or by virtue of fatigue or indulgence) to get a room. LOL - I can
just imagine what some of our people would look/feel like the next
morning without a change of clothes or toiletries/cosmetics. :)
If it's an overnight trip, it's gotta be planned that way, not done on
the spur of the moment. I would also hate to see anybody realize that
they have no clothes, etc., and decide to drive back while much too
tired or much too under the influence.

EON update:
Michelle (NZ) has volunteered to hostess one other location. That makes
three. Any more? Ginger? Aiko? Yvonne? Anya? :)
Crystal, wanna take a group to Nathan's? :) :)
Hmmm ... (wheels turning) I'm thinking that EON plus the later
get-together might work well two-tracked one evening against the
Laughlin trip. Perhaps Wednesday, with a postprandial get-together for
Karaoke (is Karaoke a common or proper noun???) with Eric at Goodtimes.

CR and Nye County news:
>From last Saturday's {Review_Journal}. This may or may not influence the
NSD II plans, but I do think it's best to stay on top of things like
this ...
+NYE COUNTY: Brothel battle brewing
+Commission chairman says he has votes to ban prostitution
+By SEAN WHALEY
+REVIEW-JOURNAL CAPITAL BUREAU
+If Nye County Commission Chairman Henry Neth gets his way, legal
+brothels would be shut down in his rural county.
+Neth said Friday he believes he has the votes to repeal the county's
+brothel ordinance, which would put six legal brothels out of business
+by later this year.
+"The overseeing and regulation of the brothels has become more of a
+burden than a benefit," he said. "I believe I have support from the
+public to do this."
+The brothels aren't following the ordinance's requirements, he said,
+particularly in regards to advertising, and are forgetting that they
+are supposed to "stay under the radar."
+At the next commission meeting in July in Tonopah, he wants to set a
+public hearing date for August to hear from county residents on the
+proposal, he said. Once the public has had its say, Neth said he
+planned to move to repeal the ordinance and put the industry out of
+business in Nye County.
+The chairman said he believes he has the three votes needed on the
+five-member commission to ban prostitution in the county, but he would
+not identify the supporters by name.
+Neth said his reading of the ordinance is that the commission can do
+away with prostitution without a vote of the public.
+Neth is running for re-election to a second term. He has several
+opponents in his Pahrump-area district.
+One fellow commissioner who disagrees with Neth is Roberta Carver.
+"That's not something I want to do," she said. "Why would we want to
+put a legitimate business out of business? They don't cause us any
+trouble."
+The brothels don't cause law enforcement problems, Carver said, and
+they pay fees that go to the county treasury.
+Commissioner Joni Eastley said she has formed no opinion on the issue
+yet, and wants to hear more from Neth about his reasons before making a
+decision.
+"It is a legal business and as long as it is a legal business I will
+support it," she said. "When it is no longer legal, I won't support
+it."
+But Eastley said she is concerned that the debate could become very
+divisive in the community.
+"It will be the Nye County brothel wars all over again," she said.
+"It's a black or white issue for most people."
+Eastley is up for re-election but has drawn no opponents. Carver is the
+third member of the commission up for re-election this year, and, like
+Neth, she has drawn several opponents, Eastley said.
+Two other commissioners, Patricia Cox and Candice Trummell, could not
+be reached for comment.
+Mack Moore, owner of Angel's Ladies brothel in Beatty, said he believes
+Neth's concerns stem from trouble with one brothel owner in the Pahrump
+area.
+"I think it would be a really bad mistake," he said about outlawing the
+brothels. "It really helps the Nevada economy, especially here in Nye
+County."
+Moore said there is a chance a ban could succeed because of the
+population boom in Pahrump. Many of the new residents do not support
+legalized prostitution, he said.
+But he said brothel owners probably would sue to keep their businesses
+if the county outlawed legal prostitution, even though they operate
+under privileged licenses.
+"I think we would have to sue," he said. "We have millions of dollars
+invested. I think we would have a good legal claim."
+Joe Richards, who owns the two Cherry Patch brothels, including one
+outside of Pahrump, said he does not know why Neth is seeking to ban
+prostitution, unless it is an election issue for him.
+"I don't know, maybe he's not doing his job," Richards said, adding,
+"He's a nice young man."
+Richards says he follows the rules regarding the brothel industry,
+including in regards to billboards.
"+I always follow the rules, I don't even speed," he said.
+It isn't the first time in recent years that an effort has been made to
+ban prostitution in Nye County. In 2000, some Pahrump residents tried to
+gather enough signatures to put the issue to a vote, but failed.
+Prostitution is illegal in Washoe and Clark counties, but it is allowed
+in rural counties.
+Neth said that is part of the problem.
+"I figure 99 percent of the brothel business comes from Las Vegas," he
+said. "Las Vegas may be the entertainment capital of the world, but Nye
+County provides a large part of that."
