Misc. items:

A few odds and ends before we get into the discussion ...

Ginger: I (think I) clearly remember you either saying or writing that
you would be doing the Lunch With(out) Ginger thing again for DLV 2005.

Is this correct?
. . . . .

I had an off-line exchange regarding SO activities, which expressed
desire and disappointment -- desire to have more of them, and
disappointment that there haven't been many and those that were had been
poorly attended. Also the desire to have some kind of a "couples"
get-together.

I know both Lee and Sandi are on this list, and both have expressed
an interest in coordinating (more) SO's activities.

I suggest that we include SO activities in the planning phases as
early as possible. I'm adding a generic "SO Get-together" on the
list of proposed activities to get this ball rolling.

As far as a "couples" thing, I have mixed feelings, but I'm not
everybody.

In general, I don't like the idea of any activities that are open only
to a subset of our attendees. I do understand that the SO gatherings are
a special case, and I'm all in favor of SO activities, but I don't want
us to get in the practice of having some things that are "closed" or by
invitation only. I think activities designated as "couples only" gets
too close to this designation.

Comments?
. . . . .

Still not many comments about the timeframe. We vote on this in less
than a month. Any comments, criticisms, or additional timeframe
nominations, please get them in.

Thanks Julie, please let us know what you know when you know it. :)

>During the Laughlin Run, they take a week off.

I don't blame them. :)

Question: What hours do you see for a possible Laughling trip? What
times are the Edwards shows? The reason I'm bringing this up is that
if the shows are in the evening, there's that 2 hour drive back that
has to be considered.

We don't have to make any decisions or plans yet on this. I think it's
safe to say that we can wait until at least the beginning of 2005 before
we have to defecate or abdicate on this plan. We could, even at fairly
short notice, add something like this as a second-track option to just
about any weekday's schedule.

I do think there is enough support for something like this to make it
happen.

Yes, please. If you ordered t-shirts, please look at the image area,
particularly the stiffness in that area.

Also, how the image wears (or fades) after a few cycles thru the washer
and dryer.

>Have to wonder how much demand there could be for pics of me holding a

Well ... I'm sure those who are into DLV folklore might want one. :)

Personally, I think the one of the one-finger salute would make a shirt
that would sell to civilians. :)

Kinda OT, but one shirt that I do think would sell big in Las Vegas is
one with "NO, I am NOT interested in a timeshare!" in big letters,
perhaps with some kind of a frowny face and "NO" in a big wavy font. :)

Yes and no, and kinda.

Yes, I have the artwork for all of the shirts from 1998 on in machine
readable format. If Dorothy (or any other volunteer) wanted to offer
shirts with those logos, I'll gladly provide this.

That's the good news.

A couple items that may be bad news, may not be ...

I don't remember any of their (Cafe Press) fabric colors that were close
to the colors of the original shirts.

Also, those they produce will be dye transfer and not silkscreen.

EON and such:

Yes, there is a calling for large group activities with more exposure to
the Teeming Millions. However, the first part of EON is not intended to
be one of those activities.

The eating-out part of EON is just the prelude to the larger get-
together following.

The purpose of EON at DLV, the way I see it, is not to get a large group
for dinner. It's to kill several birds with one stone, one of them being
to offer several options in support of a larger overall turnout for the
postprandial get-together.

It also has a side effect of getting people to know each other better in
the small group setting. When you're at dinner, your communication range
is limited essentially to about 5 people, those in the immediate
vicinity of where you are sitting.

It doesn't really matter if it's one table with 5-6 people, a larger
table (yes, a table for 19, please ...) or a whole crowd of people at
multiple tables, each person is gonna be conversing with the others
within a few feet.

>By having 5 or 6 choices will force those that go to make a decision
>that may separate them from others they want to be with.

And intentionally splitting up the group a bit may be a Good Thing<tm>.

>From a personal experience I find that I (like others) tend to hang out
with the same people. I know I *try* to circulate, but as I think back,
there were many I wish I had spent some more time with.

And remember, everybody's gonna be in one place after everybody eats,
so being separated from a best friend or soulmate for an hour or so
is no big deal.

>There will be
>many that will want to switch at the last minute forcing an impossible
>job of coordination.

Yes, and with the EON model, this is no big deal. There's no reservation
or sign-up. Everybody's free to make their decision in advance or on the
spot, and to change it at the last minute if they want to.

Remember, this is very much in real time. At dinner time, the host(ess)
gets a table or tables for whoever shows. It may be a handful, it may be
a mob.

As for coordination, all we need is 1-2 bodies at each location.

The one thing that does NOT work well with the EON model is a place that
REQUIRES a reservation or a place that requires an exact count before
they will make an entry on the waiting list.

I only remember one place from the original EON thing where this was a
major problem.

A side effect of the various venues for EON is that the dinner
experience is an excellent conversation catalyst for the larger
get-together.

>It may be better to choose two places as a test to see how it goes. (I

Ok, I've got you down. Thanks. :) You can pick one or the other.

Any other volunteers? (/me waits for Michelle's hand to go up ...)

Ball(room) activity:

Hmmmm ... How do you envision something like this being adapted to DLV?

What kind of a facility? Open to public or rented? What kind of
entertainment?

And, the big burning question, where will the "dates" come from? (Just
watch Densie make some smartass comment regarding the various winos
we've encountered on the limo tour over the years.) :)

Full of questions, arent I? (To question is the answer!)
