Wow, we could almost call this the Special Laughlin Issue. :)

We're off to a very good start as far as suggestions for DLV 2005
activities are concerned. I'm counting 23 on the proposed list so far.
Keep those ideas coming, gang! :)

Not much chatter lately regarding the timeframe. Most of the support
does appear to be with the April 24-30 dates, and my notes say that it's
the only one so far that has been semi-officially placed on the block
for consideration.

We do have about one month left before we'll need to vote on this. (And
yes, we will vote even if only one timeframe appears on the ballot, we
do need to be sure there's no question about our procedures this year.)
So, if there are any other proposed timeframes for DLV 2005, please get
them in. Do remember our Mothers Day black-out period. We can't schedule
anything on or span the dates of May 6-7-8 this coming year.

There are a few threads of interest over in the Discussion Forum, one on
possible downtown activities, and another {yawn} on hotel strategies and
whether to concentrate or spread out. If you haven't been following
those threads, it might be a good idea to at least skim them:

Yes, please see if and when they will be performing again, and if they
will be performing during DLV, that would make a valuable addition to
the schedule.

I'll get this on the schedule as a possibility. Thanks. Please keep
the group informed on what you find out, or if there's anything else
interesting down there.

Eating Out Night:

Here's an idea that I've thought of doing for DLV for several years
now, which is a slight variation of what we used to do once a month
in another group I was with some 20 years ago ...

I'm willing to be the (primary) coordinator of this, but I'm gonna
need help since I can't be in 5-6 places at once. :)

(Yes, yes, I'm well aware of the double-meaning of the title, and I
honestly think it added to the success of this in the other group.) :)

Basically the process works like this. We pick 5-6 restaurants, and get
1-2 host/hostess people for each one. We publish the list of restaurants
and let each of the Teeming Millions decide which one to join. At the
designated time the host/hostess gets table(s) for all that are present,
etc.

Following dinner the whole group then gets together at a bar or
something and socializes and gets wasted. :) Reflections on food and
dinner chit-chat is a good conversation catalyst for this.

For example, on Wednesday at 7:00pm, 1-2 host/hostess volunteers would
agree to oversee groups at each of Bahama Breeze, Cafe Nicolle,
Benihana, Milano's, Paris Buffet, etc. We publish all as dinner options,
assuring them that there will be at least somebody from the group at
each of those options. When 7:15 comes around (for those fashionably
late) the host(ess) gets a table or tables for those present, everybody
eats, and afterwards everybody goes over to Goodtimes for Karaoke and
libations.

I see a number of advantages to this over a large group dinner at
any one particular place, including ...

* Avoids a very large and obvious crowd of t-girls at any one place.

* Likewise, gives everybody a break from the larger dinner routine.

* Avoids the necessity of a group reservation, limited menu, prepayment.

* Covers a very wide variety of tastes, for maximum overall turnout.

* Doesn't overload the smaller venues, such as Milano's.

We did have some issues and some "bugs" that were worked out over the
course of a few months. Of course, we don't have a few months to work
out bugs, but we can learn from experience ...

1. People often gravitated toward one or two of the places depending on
who was the host(ess) at that place. We solved that by not listing the
names of the host(ess) people in the newsletter.

2. Latecomers. In some places it was as easy as pulling up an extra
chair/stool and squeezing in. In others it was a major ordeal. We never
really solved it, but in some places the host would wait a reasonable
time for stragglers before getting table(s).

3. Host(ess) and attendee no-shows. The second month we agreed to have
two host(ess) types at each place, so if one had a last-minute conflict
there would always be somebody, plus if nobody else showed there, he/she
would not have to eat alone.

4. The smoking/non issue. On some nights at some places this was very
much a non-issue but in some cases it was a 10 round main event. :(
>>DING<<
. . . . .

Anyway, in looking over the list of our favorite dinner venues plus
those that were suggested, it's obvious that we have more places to
go than we have evenings to go to them. I see this as a way to cover
more places and put some variety into the dinner process.

As I think, if I were not for Arfnet (that is slang for Fidonet), I
might not be here with you. It was on the old Fidonet GENDER
echoconference that I caught wind of the IRC channel back in 1994. Wow,
that was over 10 years ago! As some of you know, talk about an
in-real-life get-together started up on that channel in the fall of
1996, and that came to be in May of 1997 in an event dubbed Diva Las
Vegas.

And the rest is history! :)

I'm sure something like that could be arranged. :)

It does appear that there is some interest in this activity, at least
from our group here.

I'm adding a downtown/FSE excursion to the proposed list. All it will
take to make this a reality is ... :)

There's also that new drag-theme club that's supposed to open up near
the FSE sometime Real Soon Now.

DLV T-shirts:

I just did. :)

In the printing and graphics arts industry, this is known as a "demand
shop", meaning items are produced onesey-twosey on demand instead of
being done in runs or batches.

The obvious advantages to this is that they offer a wide variety of
items in their inventory (I am impressed with the scope of what
they offer) and they don't have any set-up charge or minumums. (An
English/Latin professor, even a Math professor, would tell you
there's no such word as "minimums"!) :) :) :)

Hmmmmm ... would DLV thongs sell? :) :)

Another major advantage to this firm is that it looks like they handle
all of the billing/collection/shipping, and that the customers can order
on line.

That's the good news.

For the next part, keep in mind that I haven't been involved in the
printing/graphics industry since the early 80's, so my experience may be
dated.

For the wearables it looks like they use dye-transfer printing. This
(historically) does not wear as well or last as long as silkscreen and
(also historically) the colors are not as brilliant or as saturated as
with silkscreen.

As I said in a previous thread about shirts, I've heard that the newer
transfer media is greatly improved from that of 5 years ago, so both of
those historical statements may not be as valid as they were.

In fact, I was thinking of trying some of the newer transfer media to
make something like a shirt with the image of Sr. Morella holding the
Galiano [sic] bottle or that of Sr. Morella flipping the bird, which is
a classic! :)

You will notice that they don't offer any dark or even medium-dark
fabric colors. Dye-transfer just does not work well on those. (They do
have a black ball cap, but the image is on an opaque white background.)

Another issue with transfer printing is that the transfer medium is
applied to the entire area of the image, not just the printed areas. You
can feel a certain amount of stiffness even in the background of the
image area. A seamstress or tailor would say that the "hand" of the
fabric is altered.

For the hard-surface items it looks like they use dye sublimation, which
is very good and resists rub-off.

>If this avenue is worth persuing I could set it up and run with it.
>(head down, mumbling, hand being weakly raised)

I do think it's worth looking into, and if you wanna run with it, I sure
don't have any objections and I doubt if others will have any major
objection.

Since it looks like all $$$ is between the customer and the art house,
it keeps us out of that end of it.

It also looks like the same artwork can be used for different items and
that multiple drawings (even photographs) could be used.

>P.S. Let me know what you think of the attached graphic.

(For those listening in, I've placed this on line at:
http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/DLV_1.jpg)

Well, I admit that I tend to favor the "Jellomold" logo, but that's been
used for 5 years now, and if this is gonna be your baby, you get to
decide what artwork gets used.

Of course there's nothing that says multiple images could be offered.

My first impression was "oh wow, that shading will never work" but I was
thinking silkscreen and not dye-transfer. Yes, with dye-transfer,
shading and continuous tones will reproduce properly. I notice that they
say "unlimited colors", but in actuality it will be 64/256/1024/65536
depending on their equipment.
