Registration testing:
Thanks to everybody who helped out by testing this. We did uncover a few
slight quirks, a couple typos, one bad link, but for the most part
everything appeared to work as expected.
Quite a few of you appeared to be registering "for real" and as of now
it looks like we have more signed up than we had in either 1997 or 1998.
+Latest headcount:
+Sun Nov 30 20:01:53 CST 2003
+Return signups: 10
+Return SO: 2
+Newcomer signups: 0
+Newcomer SO 0
+Weighted total: 10
Anyway, if anybody else on this list wants to try this out, or even to
register this early in the game:

Rooms and roommates:

Thanks. Hope you did not have any problems? :)

Let's talk about roommates a bit and open up the floor for discussion.
Speaking freely, from my perspective, room sharing, at least the sharing
program we've organized, has not really worked out that well over the
course of DLV.
That's my opinion, opinions of others may differ. But again, I almost
always prefer to have a room to myself for these things.
Room sharing for DLV has always been intended for cost sharing and
congenial companionship, and it seems like from those perspectives,
it's been only marginally successful, imao, of course.
Yes, yes, I know that over the past couple years a few of you have had
roommates and for you it did indeed work out.
For the first few years we tried matching roomates there seemed to be a
lot of bitching, with misunderstandings about smoking and quiet hours to
be the sore spots.
The last couple years, it seems like there have not been that many
roommate requests.
Last year was the worst, and I arbitrarily killed the roommate matching
program (with notice to the org list, just a discreet removal of the
listings on the main list) after it was obvious to me that the two
roommate items that were submitted implied something other than cost
sharing and friendly companionship. :)
If we try the roommate thing again, I want to keep it separate from the
registration process. I'm trying to simplify registration as much as
possible. I even thought of moving the ride-share items out of
registration, but the code to generate the lists is in there and
that has worked out well the past few years.
My big questions are, do we need roommate matching and do we want it?
The past few years there have not been that many roommate requests
come in, indicating to me that the demand is not that great.
Anyway, I see a few options, and I would like to entertain some
discussion if we're to do this again ...
1. Try the "Roommate Clearing House" on the announcement list again,
letting those who are seeking roommates post notices. This time with
admonitions about what the roommate matching program is and is not.
2. Make roommate matching part of the Big Sister program, and let our
two volunteer Big Sister coordinators screen and match roommates.
3. Find another volunteer, separate from the Big Sister Coordinators, to
be a room share coordinator. We tried this once and it didn't really
work out.

Registration testing:

Actually, since most of the people immediately responded to the
validation e-mail, why don't you ignore it and be sure you get a
steady stream of bitch-o-grams reminding you to do so. You should have
already received some of these. I'll watch for the final one and slam
in a validation for you when it goes out.

Actually, this is exactly what I wanted people to do .... pound the heck
out of it and see what happens. :) Let's see what the system thinks your
registration looks like at this time ...

No red flags. It found your information with your e-mail address, and it
looks normal. It looks like you did spend a good 15 minutes hammering away
at it, and that's what we really need.
You did make one update which looks like it was properly recorded ...
+update ppant set soatt = 'y', arrdate = '05/01/2004', depdate = '05/09/2004',
+hotel = 'Sahara', needride = 'y', havecar = 'n'
+where idno = '1045673298-24612';
+UPDATE 1
This agrees with the info shown above.
It also shows that the e-mail to you generated from the registration was
properly received by your mail system. I'm tracking these this year,
partly due to the one person who claimed to have registered but has no
footprint at all in the system here.

Art tour and registration error:

Thanks, Sarah, please let us know of the developments as they happen.

I'm actually expecting the majority of the returnees who use this screen
to not have this number handy. The mailing that will go out to most of
the returnees will have a shortcut link in it.
Most everybody on this list who helped test this used the e-mail option,
which does appear to work quite well (if the system doesn't screw up) :).
>Entered my email address and got a request to report Error 0xf3.
I think this was a true system error on my end.
Error f3 is a null (blank) first name in an internal test. At first I
thought you had entered the e-mail address and clicked the button under
the name section, but the session log does show clearly that you were in
e-mail mode (clicked the button under e-mail).

+08:27:56 8471 Email mode: Sarahc01@hotmail.com
+08:27:56 8471 Record: Error f3 null fn
In this case, the f3 error shows that the database pull was successful
(at least the script thought so) but the first name field was null. This
should not happen and I think it was a result of a database error.
>Entered my name and got the screen reading Registration Processing and
>a note in my explorer saying "Done"
Session log shows a you then launched the script in name mode.

However, at this time a fatal database error occured causing the
database engine (postgres, for those who care) to abort. I'm trying
to duplicate it and can't so far.
I'm gonna call this an idiopathic database failure ("just one of those
things" for non-techies) and if it repeats I'll investigate further.
I rebooted the system to be sure it was in a known state. It had been
up for 40-some days, which is not long for that type of machine, but
I wanted to be sure it was clean. I restarted the database engine and
checked it.

That's good. Log shows that your registration was successful this
time.

>The only thing that failed was my attempt to reply with this

This one kinda has me stumped. A megapurist might argue that the address
Annie@annie.net is invalid, since the left-hand side is case-sensitive and
all of our user names are lower-case only. However, our system here is
liberal enough to ignore capitization when receiving mail. Anyway ...
I maintain a Hotmail account for testing, and just for giggles I tried
to duplicate your error. Sure enough, my test message to Annie@annie.net
from Hotmail failed. Hotmail is not very explicit as to why something
fails, but I checked the logs here and it never touched anything on this
side. I then repeated the test with the correct annie@annie.net address
and it went thru fine.
