Testing 1 2 3:

It's that time again. Time to test and shake down the on-line
registration system.

This year we're performing an additional validation step, so there's
been quite a change in the code since last year. We're also doing a
streamlined version of the screens for returnees, so there's some logic
in there that has to be stressed a bit.

Anyway ... Over the past few weeks I and a cow-orker have hammered
away on this, entering bogus registrations, canceling them, trying
to get the program to blow up, etc. It's time for a real-world test.

If any of you would like to help test this out, please do so. It's
stable enough so you can safely register for real if you're ready
to do so.

If you don't want to register for real now, but want to help test, just
ignore the validation e-mail (and the 5 or so nag-o-grams) that you
receive and the registration will be eventually cancelled for
non-response.

The URL is: http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/reg2004.html

Please use the express re-registration form, which is the main screen
from the "register as a returnee" link. (I assume everybody on the list
here has been to DLV in the recent past.) I'm very interested in hearing
about any cases where the express re-registration does not work or does
not behave as expected.

Please respond to the validation e-mail so we can test the automated
validation routine.

Please try canceling and uncanceling, recovering your registration
number, and editing your registration. You should now receive a
confirmation by e-mail when your registration is changed or edited.

TIA, gang. :)

Hey there, hi there, ho there (you're as welcome as can be). :)

Apologies in advance for being long-winded in my responses here.

(Sorry about the long digression here.)

Hmmm ... something about that number (1/2) doesn't seem quite right.

First timers (to DLV, that is), yes, have always been a significant
portion of our numbers, but I don't think the rank beginners, meaning
little or no public exposure, were that great in proportion.

Going back to the survey for 2003, we have the following:

Number of times at DLV:

First time: 22
Two times: 18
3 or more times: 18

That comes out to 22/58 being first time, or about 37%, somewhere
between 1/3 and 1/2.

Now the reported experience:

None before DLV: 5
Less than 1 year: 3
1-2 years: 8
2-5 years: 17
5-10 years: 13
10-20 years: 7
More than 20: 4

Absolute first-exposure people are less than 10% of the respondents, and
all who are very-newly-out (1 yr or less) are 8/57 or about 14%.

Even if we stretch the definition of "rank beginner" to include all with
less than 2 years, we still get only 16/57 or about 28% who are still
wet behind the ears, so to speak. :)

My conclusion from comparing those is that a significant number of the
DLV newbees still have at least a modest amount of public exposure.

>Maybe the pct. of newbies is one reason for not getting a full turnout
>at mainstream events...... dunno. It could be that some attendees are
>just too scared to attend.

I do agree that one of the reasons for lower turnout at the mainstream
things is unease in public. The survey doesn't ask for what type of
exposure they have, and it could very well be the case that many of
them *do* have 3-5-10+ years of public experience, with the majority
of that experience being at support groups, t* conventions, safe bars
and the like.

>Understandable considering waiting on line, restroom, etc.

Lines (queues for Michelle) :) can be a frightening experience for the
newly-out. IMAO (there's that abbreviation again) the situation is
exacerbated by having obvious groups of t-girls all in one bolus as
opposed to having them distributed throughout the line. The situation
with Jubilee last year was just fine, since it was reserved seating and
our people entered as they arrived, with no backlog. We had the opposite
situation for SOM (yes, another TLA) where they asked us to have our
people line up in a certain way and then the ticketing machine
malfunctioned. Fortunately the San Remo is not that intimidating.

We've had several reports that the line for LaCage at the Riviera was
harrowing, especially when it's opposite a boatload of horny fratboy
types on line to see Crazy Girls. :)

And then there are elevators (lifts for Michelle). :) Seems like these
are often a high-anxiety point for many in our community. I'm even aware
of a physical confrontation in an elevator at a t* convention back in
the 90's.

As for restrooms ...

#include <do_not_go_in_groups_dammit.h> :)
. . . . .

But ... back to the point you made, I have another (somewhat rhetorical)
question for the group ...

Is it our duty to provide less-public or less-intimidating alternatives
to all activities that might be too public for those with little
experience?

A related question, should we promote DLV as an appropriate venue for
one's first public exposure?

Piece of fruit? I'm not gonna touch that one. :) :) :)
