Org List:

This is the DLV 2004 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Onward and upward:

This is being sent out a bit later than I had planned. Votes trickled
in until Tuesday morning, each one restarting the 48 hour window. I
decided to wait and send it all out at once, rather than to split it
into two parts.
. . . . .

The last pressing item of business before the holidays is our suggested
hotel vote. If there's any additional discussion on hotels, or any more
nominations, please get that in now. You may expect a call for votes
shortly.

For those who are new, the hotel vote works a bit differently than the
aye/nay votes that you've been seeing lately. The ballot will have
several lines, one for each nominated property. You may vote YES, or NO
(or abstain) on each individual property, and those which get a majority
of YES votes appear as our suggested hotels. This type of vote covers
several issues with one vote, such as if (do we suggest hotels), how
many, what scale, and what properties.

For example, if you are of the opinion that we should not be suggesting
hotels, vote NO on all of them. If you think we should be concentrating
our people, vote for one and only one. If you want to see our group
spread out, vote YES for all of them. If you like some properties but
dislike others, vote only for the ones you like.

Here's the final list of hotels that have been nominated. This is the
last call for additions.

Sahara
Comfort Inn
Bellagio
San Remo
Stratosphere
Imperial Palace
. . . . .

But anyway ... for several years we suspended our DLV planning efforts
over the holidays, but last year that didn't seem to happen. What I
would like to try this year is to hold off any non-essential items until
after the first of the year, so expect no more nagging and laundry lists
for the balance of 2003. :) Let's all take a break, so to speak, and
enjoy the holidays, and reconvene in January. We'll continue to put out
this list on Wednesdays as long as there is something in the queue. If
not, we may skip a week or two until January.

We're well on the way in planning DLV 2004, so unless anybody has things
that are pressing, we can safely put most things on the back burner
until January.

Policy vote result:

Votes are in and polls are closed. Results are as follows:

For: 17
Against: 2
Abstain: 2

Last vote was received Tuesday morning and polls were closed Thursday.
No late votes were received and no invalid votes were received.

As you will see, the policy has been adopted.

I think the numbers speak for themselves. Not unanimous, but quite
significantly in favor.

I would like to thank our Ad-Hoc Committee for their effort in drafting
this document. I think we can now say that the mission of this committee
has been successfully concluded.

I will now turn the floor over to the representative of the opposing
political party for the dissenting opinion. :)

The policy:

Densie writes:

>Now I will explain why I voted "no".

>The policy is just too verbose. I got through the first few lines and
>skipped the rest because, IMO, it had nothing to do with going to Vegas
>and having a good time.

>Sorry to be so critical because it looks like someone really worked
>hard on it, but it reminds me of lawyers, conference rooms, and rubber
>chickens.

I will admit that the policy is verbose, and personally, I wish such a
policy were not necessary, but unfortunately it seems to be the case
that it is.

This policy actually removes a lot of "World According to Annie",
"World According to Tina" and such text that's been previously sent to
our people, so the net-net is that such things as the LFM will be about
the same size.

Now, to address rubber chickens, meeting rooms, paid registrations, and
other C-word attributes ...

At this time I'm feeling far less of a force to push DLV in the
direction of a convention than I felt around 2000-2001 or so. I think
most of our active organizers, even the new ones we picked up this year,
are in sync with our vacation-not-convention model and wish to keep it.

I think you know that if there is a serious effort to turn DLV into a
High Desert FanFair clone, I'll fight it, and if unsuccessful I'll be
the first to bail.

We will most likely have to deal with the numbers issue one way or
another within the forseeable future.

But the bottom line is, if a convention happens, it will be in addition
to, and not in place of DLV the vacation.

Limo Tour:

Jamie writes:

>After conversing with Tootsey and Monique, we have decided to revert
>back to the Traditional Limo Tour night. Please move the Tour back to
>Thursday night, after the Show.

Ok, done.

>I will be sending particulars at a later time, but I do want to
>emphasize the fact that we expect to see good participation in this
>event, regardless of the Golf event, the next morning.

Thanks, Jamie, please let us know of any other details when you know
them.

I do think that the show and the limo make up a combination that is hard
to beat. I know I do like to dress up for both of them, and I know
others do as well. This will make Thursday the big dress-up evening of
DLV 2004.

My only concern is that everybody (limo fans and golf fans) are happy,
or at least can live with it, and there's a minimum of griping due to
the limo night leading into the golf morning.

Bowling:

Thanks, Monique.

Ok, ladies, we have one more activity in need of adoption.

Any volunteers?
