This mailing:
This week's mailing is kind of a mixed bag. We have a volunteer to do some
photography, some Big Sister items, and some general items.
There are a number of items in this mailing which are in need of
comments and feedback, so please let your thoughts and feelings be
known. Remember that it's ok to agree to disagree, so feel free to speak
your mind even if what you say appears to not be in line with popular
opinion.
Not much has come in as to opinions of the schedule length, particularly
the topic of extending back to Sunday so the High Tea can be on the
slate.
Only one brief comment (below) has come in on this.
I'm not a high tea fan, so I don't know how important this may be to
some. We need some input from those who are, as to how large a priority
this is, and how much a demand there is for this, since this is the one
item potentially on the chopping block (at least as an "official"
scheduled activity) if we adopt the proposed Monday to Saturday
timeframe.
Going back thru the sign-up lists, we show 27 and 22 signed up for this
in 2002 and 2003 respectively, but the photos seem to indicate an
attendance of about half that. Are these assumptions correct?
Big burning questions are:
1. Is High Tea enough of a priority for a significant number of our people
that it warrants extending the schedule one day?
2. Do we have enough volunteers to coordinate enough nontrivial activities
to fill a 7-day timeframe?
Comments? Volunteers?

Volunteer for DLV 2004 Taking Pics:
We have somebody interested in attending DLV and doing digital
portraits. Here's a summary of the correspondence. Is this something
we want for DLV 2004?
Comments would be appreciated.
(from a conversation)
Suzi writes:
+s> I have wanted to get to DLV for 2 years in a row now. Each time I

+s> Maybe by volunteering for something I will increase my odds of
+s> actually making it next year.
+s> How do you, or do you deal with taking portraits of, and for the
+s> girls to add to their portfolios?
+a We've always had many people with their own cameras who took many
+a photos of the people and of the activities. No specific portrait
+a person.
+s> If there is a pro photographer, than my idea is out.
+a We've never had a portrait photographer, although several of our
+a people over the years have gone to such things as Glamour Shots, the
+a t* +boutiques which have photographers on call, and a now-defunct
+a boutique +which had a studio on premesis.
+s> However, if no pro photographer is there to take and sell pics, than
+s> here is what I would do. I would set up a spot in one of the main
+s> meeting venues where the {participants} could have several digital
+s> photos taken.
+a We don't have any main meeting venues. We're a vacation, not a
+a convention, different from all the other t* events, and we don't have
+a any vendor areas, meeting rooms, hospitality suite, etc.
+s> They could get the photos emailed to them, posted to their web site,
+s> or printed on the spot.
+s> If that idea does not float, then I would be eager to help in other
+s> ways.
+a I think it will definitely "float" and I think there would be a
+a demand for such a service.
+a One thing you don't mention, would this be a paid professional
+a service, or would it be gratis, as a benefit to the people present?
+. . . . .
Suzi continues:
+s> I imagine providing a free digital portrait photo service as a
+s> benefit to those who attend DLV! I will benefit by meeting lots of
+s> people who share my interests.
+a This was what I was wondering. Thanks for clearing it up.
+s> As an alternative, the pics could be recorded onto cd for the
+s> subject to take with them (note: I do not intent to profit from this
+s> event and if the disks were made available it would be at the exact
+s> price I or others pay for the disks, please advise on any conflicts
+s> with item 9.09 in your FAQ).
+a No conflicts here. Since it's not for profit I don't see any problem.
+s> I imagine setting up a backdrop and a photo location at one or two
+s> of the activities. This would give us the opportunity to have
+s> photos taken in multiple setting. the typical photos we see on web
+s> sites are action shots, I imaging staged shots either sitting or
+s> standing or maybe even in groups of 2 or 3.
+a Here's where there may be a problem. DLV is very fast-paced and most
+a activities have very little free time. I'm hard pressed to think of a
+a single activity venue where there would be time and space to do
+a something like this. There are no common areas like there are at the
+a conventions.
+s> I am not a professional photographer and do not have a portfolio of
+s> this type of photography. (If you need to see a portfolio, I will
+s> begin working on one as soon as I can, just tell me what you want).
+s> I just have a 4 mpixel camera and know how to take simple photoć„€ of
+s> people looking their best.
+a My concern about a portfolio was only if you were to charge. As you
+a probably know, the skill of professional photographers will vary from
+a true artists to downright hacks. If you were to charge, I wanted to
+a be sure there were samples of your work available.
+s >I would need access to the following equipment: computer with 1 usb
+s >port, 1 internet connection, and possibly 1 cd writer. I would also
+s >need to look into 2 materials for background, a background hanger, a
+s >lamp and some form of transport for the equipment.
+a Again, these may be a problem. I don't know of any appropriate place
+a where this could be set up. I will ask the organizers for opinions
+a on this. As far as a computer with Internet access, maybe one of the
+a local people can help you out with this. Again, I'll ask.
+s> This is the first time I have considered voluntering for such an
+s> undertaking. Please let me know what else ou need or how we will
+s> proceed if the idea is acceptable.
+a I'll bring this up in front of our organizers next week and see what
+a kind of response we get. Thanks again.
. . . . .
What do all of you think about this? What facilities could be used for
such a thing? (I'm hard pressed to think of any.) Do we have local people
who can assist with equipment and supplies?
We need some feedback on this, gang, so we can let Suzi know if she
should plan on this.
Comments, ladies (gentlemen)?

Big Sister Coordinator:
We now have two volunteers for the role of Big Sister Coordinator, those
being Jenni and Nora.
Nora had originally expressed interest two weeks ago, and these two
items came in last Wednesday literally minutes apart.
There's nothing that says that this role can't be performed by two (or
more) individuals, with the duties either shared or divided.
. . . . .
Jenni writes:
j> I would like to volunteer as the BSC. I have had a bit of experience
j> in this area and would enjoy seeing it done well.
j> It is not surprising to find how intimidating these activities can be

j> I think a "safe net" program that helps support the timid, bolsters
j> the semi-experienced and taps the needed support from the confident
j> and bold would benifit us all and make the entire event more
j> enjoyable.
. . . . .
And Nora writes:
n> I am the one that initially expressed interest to be the big /little
n> sister coordinator. I am still interested. Do you have any idea what
n> the responsibility will entail?
n> Will it be merely a match up of volunteer big sister with little
n> sister requests? or is it anything else? Please let me know.
. . . . .
To try to answer the questions, and this is still new territory, but I
envision the BSC as one or more persons who devote their primary DLV
energy toward being sure the Big Sister Program works properly both
before and during DLV.
I say "primary DLV energy" meaning that she (they) will not be so
involved with organizing activities or other things that the Big Sister
Program falls to second priority.
Those who want a Big Sister will request one by e-mail. These requests
have been anything from a one-line "I want a Big Sister for DLV" to a
very long dissertation explaining why they want a Big Sister and their
life history and how they feel about the world economic situation, etc.
:)
Volunteers to be Big Sisters usually come from this group here (the ORG
people) but can come from the general DLV population as well.
The main qualification for being a Big Sister is, of course, the desire
to help. I would add another, and that would be to have actually
attended DLV at least once. (We do occasionally get newcomers who
volunteer to be Big Sisters.) This is just so we're sure a Big Sister
knows what DLV really is and how things go at DLV.
It was also discussed here last year that a Big Sister should not only
be able to share the techniques of makeup, dressing, etc., but also be
able and willing to set the example of how to appropriately dress and
act in public.
Here's the way I envision the process working ...
All emails requesting Big Sister assistance or volunteering as a Big
Sister will be forwarded to the Big Sister Coordinator(s). The BSC will
correspond as necessary to gather details, etc., etc. The BSC will
then make that all-important match between BS and LS. Yes, there's
some guesswork in this part.
The BSC should check in occasionally with each BS/LS pair to be sure
things are working out.
At DLV, the BSC should probably follow up with the BS/LS pairs to be
sure they have made contact and have not killed each other. :)
. . . . .
Nora and Jenni, please let us know if you want to share this
responsibility or if you would rather do it individually.
Nora is on record for inquiring about it first. Jenni is on record for
actually volunteering for it a few minutes prior to Nora, so it's not
very clear who is first in line here. :)
Anyway, please let us know your thoughts on this.

Of course. :)
I can see this working in a few ways, one is to have some kind of a
get-together where {theme} would be the primary focus of the activity.
Another is to make {theme} an add-on to some existing activity, or
evening, as we did with Go Blonde Night or Red Shoe Night.
Maybe a general ethnic night. Show off the heritage you are, or
the heritage you want to be. Maybe this could begin at one of the
"International" buffets with various stations with cuisine from
different parts of the world.
Maybe {wheels turning} this might even be an opportunity to try the
"eating out night" idea I've tossed out several times over the years.
Any more thoughts?

High Tea, Limo, etc.:

Having two (or more) activities in one timeslot can be a good thing or
a bad thing. When we've done it (not many times) it's worked out fine.
Yes, two simultaneous activities will dilute each other to a certain
extent, but having two options will increase our overall turnout.
The only case where I see a problem would be putting two very strong
activities against each other, forcing a difficult choice.
>It did seem that there was a good turnout.
Limo tour did have a good turnout, but it was far less than expected
due to an extreme number of people who signed up and did not put their
money where their checkbox was.
>As a Limo vollunteer, I feel that it would be nice to give an option

Ok, now all we have to do is think up something that's not fun to put
as an alternative to the limo tour. :) :) :)
Seriously, from what I heard the gathering at Hamburger Mary's worked
well and was well attended. I would think that something like that
would be an appropriate second-track option for the show/limo, or as
Mindy has suggested a "Pity Party", but save the Trash-N-Flash thing
for an evening where it could be the feature activity.
>I would probably be coming on Sunday and staying through the closing

Thanks. We will definitely take this under advisement.
In light of that, it may be better not to stop for a meal on the Rhyolite
trip, but to advise everybody to eat before the trip, and hopefully that
and snacks will be enough. The only other town that I remember on the way
is Beatty, which makes Pahrump look like Gotham City by comparison.

If this is something you want to take the initiative to do, I don't
think anybody here will have any objection to it. We'll be deciding on
hotels this fall, and Monique will have some San Remo feedback toward
the end of next month. Depending on how these go we may have a larger
concentration of our people at the San Remo, but I'm sure we will never
get anywhere close to all of our people at one hotel.

Is Leona planning to have something at next year's DLV, either a new
storefront or temporary facility? Do you know this as a fact or is this
just speculation?
My only concern about a "comfort zone" is that we don't want it to be
"too comfortable" :) to the point that those who are a bit shy will
choose to hang around there as opposed to getting out and doing things.
>Keep The Faith

These three are all very nice places. Goodtimes and Flex are perfect for
our larger gatherings, since they are comfortable for the new people but
those who have been out a while should not get claustrophobia there.
