Various goings-on:

Notices of "Cancellation pending", 11 of them, were sent to those who
have not responded to 2 notices to make their activity selections.

Unfortunately, Gina is one of them. If anybody is in touch with Gina,
please be sure she's OK and tell her we will miss her.
. . . . .

Since the war started on Wednesday, such things as registrations and
mailing list requests have totally stopped. They were trickling in
up until Wednesday, then zippo. Web hits are WAY down.

How much actual affect this will have on our turnout has yet to be
seen.

A note that it's business as usual, and that DLV will go on for better
or worse, will be sent out in the mailing this weekend.
. . . . .

It looks like we now have 5 proposals for Wednesday replacement:

1. Ginger's proposal for Hard Rock Cafe.

2. Cat's proposal for Nick's. (Italian, south Strip area)

3. Kate's proposal for Carluccio's.

4. Tina's proposal for Freezone.

5. Mary Beth's proposal for Rio (which buffet?)

Thanks, Cat. Please let us know what we find out.

I don't know how accurate the numbers are and will be. The first of the
admonitions to "take all you want but eat all you take" WRT activity
sign-ups will go out this weekend.

Last year we had 88 signed up for the Sasha's dinner on Friday. IIRC we
had only 40-something show up, or about a 50% fallout rate.

Let's look at that 72 figure, apply some guesstimates as to what might
happen, and see if we can zero in on a real-world number. For argument's
sake, let's say that number holds from now until DLV.

1. We'll probably get a few full DLV cancellations of people who
signed up. That leaves us about 69.

2. I'll be tickled pink if we get our hardcore no-show rate down to
10%, but I think realistically it will be about 15% or so. That leaves
us 59.

3. Sasha's was known widely as being about as safe as a concrete bunker,
and I'm sure several signed up just for that reason. Let's guess that
maybe 10% will change their mind and drop this dinner if it's not in
something perceived as safe. That leaves us 53.

4. Let's say 5% won't like our choice for whatever reason. Now it's 48.

5. Then there will be a few, let's say 5% as a guess, who will sleep it
off, space it off, blow it off, makeup disaster, bad hair day, whatever.
Now we're down to 45.

Yes, all of that is guesswork. However (comma) I understand why airlines
and restaurants overbook.

My guess is that 50 is about the number we will get to actually show for
this.

I'm sure we can converge on a more accurate number when we see how many
will change their mind when we announce the new venue, and when we see
how many no-shows we get, etc.

>Sit-down restaurant or buffet is fine by me, nix IMO on a hotel banquet

Yes, a casino buffet will scare many newcomers. I remember one who was
brave enough to go to the Sahara buffet with us in 2001 who was scared
to go up for a coffee refill.

We've always had fair turnouts, but not great turnouts, for our buffet
meals. My hunch is that a buffet thing would get about half the turnout,
if that, of a sit-down meal in a place that's nonthreatening.

>>. What scale of facility, which of course implies price range?

>I think we need to cap the price at the $20-$25 level to minimize
>fallout due to $$'s.

Agreed. Better the affordability factor, the better the turnout.

Which buffet at the Rio are you suggesting? IIRC, there are two of them.

>Comments? Opinions?

Freezone is definitely cheaper than the others, and most will assume
it's t-friendly. Those two factors will increase our turnout, which will
be a Good Thing<tm>. I also assume that there are no more restroom
issues there.

Only negative I can see here is perhaps the limited seating. Parking
in the area is limited, but at 5-6 I don't think it will be a problem.

I think Freezone is a viable candidate for the Wednesday thing.

Yes, yes, I know I said I would never set foot in there again, but if
Tina's ok with it, I am too. :)
