Oops:

This is a resend of a mailing that was supposed to go out on January
8, which apparently went into the bit bucket for unknown reasons.
(I had wondered why things were so quiet. :) Some of the items may
appear in the past tense, but most of this is still quite valid.
My apologies for not noticing this earlier.

This is the DLV 2003 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Ongoing activity database appears on line at:

Trivia answer:

Monique writes (a loonnnnnng time ago):

>Oh Sooooo. Wrong. I Know the name of the bar at the Sahara. And for the
>next 7 months, ya'll have got to firgure it out. Oh BTW, the first
>DLVorg Sister that gives me the correct name of the bar at the Sahara
>get's her first drinks and her (his) dinner courtisie Moniuqe.

And the answer is ... (Anton, a drum roll, please ...)

{tat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat}

The Thirsty Camel Bar!

{cymbal crash!}

{Imagine Paul Shafer playing a riff from Rock The Casbah.}

Is that the answer you wanted? :)

Laundry list:

I must say I'm very impressed by the way things have progressed this
year. All of our major activities have been adopted and it looks like
things are going to work out quite well. Thanks to everybody for making
this happen.

Registrations have started coming in and we already have 31 signups.
Oops, make that 30, one of them is a duplicate. (Anybody's ears
burning? :)

Let's go over the list of some open things ...

Some schedule and activity items:

I would like everybody to please take a close look at the schedule
(summary and detail, both below) and if anything looks wrong, out of
place, unworkable, etc., speak now. I'm sure we will have some changes
driven by necessity, but now is the time to start solidifying things.

Here are a few things that I've noticed that still have questions:

1. Welcome Celebration, following Dinner at HM. Is this gonna be at HM
as well? I believe Leah and {mumble} were checking on this.

2. Glamour Boutique Open House. Is this a "go" for Thursday afternoon?

3. Regular food service at Flex. Still no yes/no gotit/dont answer. Do
we want to plan a dinner at a (close) location for Thursday eve?

4. Bowling. Tony, what day/time?

5. Sunday side trip. Rhyolyte? Mt Charleston?

6. Jubilee tickets. Aiko, you should have received 6 requests for seats,
including mine. Does this agree with what you received?

7. Late-Nite at Bellagio. Gina, is this a go? Day/time?

8. Golf. Mindy, when do you want to get the golf list started?

9. Workshops. Aiko, which way are you leaning on this?

10. Religious services. I believe Leah was gonna prepare a list of the
churches that invite GLBT people. Any news on this?

11. After-show activity for Saturday night. We had some discussion on
this but no conclusion and nothing dropped down to the schedule. Do we
want to plan something? Remember, we've had complaints of "no quality
social time on Saturday night" for the past two years.

12. Skydiving? Is this still up in the air?

13. High Tea. Mindy, have you selected a location?
. . . . .

Logistical items:

1. I've got Monique down as Chief Registrar, backed up by Tootsye and
Jena. Is this correct? Anybody I'm missing on this?

2. I've got Jena down as providing name tags? Is this still a "go"? Are
you gonna want to print the inserts as well?

3. Activity signup. Looking ahead, I want to begin this around the 10th
of March. That means that any activity that we need a headcount or a
hoop-jump on will need to be solid as to day/time/capacity as of that
time. That's about 2 months away. Also be thinking of what the limit as
to number of bodies at each activity you coordinate should be.

4. Shuttle van. If this is to happen, one or more of us are gonna have
to adopt this, just like an activity, and make it happen. Volunteers? A
note asking for interest went out in the January 2 welcome mailing and
was repeated last Sunday. Comments received appear below.

It indeed looks like there will be interest. Who wants to run with this?

5. Voice phone calls (pre-DLV). Michelle(NV) is on record volunteering
for this. Is this still on?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Big Sisters:

Thanks to those who wrote in volunteering and/or confirming their desire
to be a Big Sister. I think it's safe to say that the demand for Big
Sisters will be more this year than any in the past.

In the past, I've simply matched up Little Sisters with Big Sisters by
guess as to who would fit with whom.

I would like to ask those who would like to act as Big Sisters to send in
a brief note including any or all of the following:

1. What you think your strong points and weak points are regarding being
a big sister.

2. Do you want one LS only, or can you handle more than one?

3. Your approximate age. I think it works best if BS/LS are at least
within 10 years or so of each other.

4. What you are and are not willing to do for your little sisters,
such as:

  a. Pre-DLV correspondence via phone and/or e-mail.

  b. Pre-DLV fashion/makeup critique via photos or video.

  c. Provide rides for LS.

  d. Pick up LS at airport.

  e. Take LS shopping.

  f. Assist LS with makeup.

  g. Anything else you would like to say.

If you will please do this, it will make the selection and matching
process much easier.

As the Big Sister requests come in, I'll then try to pick who appears to
be the best match.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
All kinds of things:

>Time for Monique to speak up after getting settled in Denver.....

>First off, Happy Holidays the DLVOrg group. I hope Ms. Claus treated
>ya'll well and the best of wishes for the New Year!

>As for Hidden Woman and Glamour Boutique.... both are in competition
>with each other and both would love to have our business. I'm a bit
>concerned that we do not schedule these two potential venues on the
>same day, yet I see the daytime schedule is filling up quite a bit.

As of now it appears that the open house sessions will indeed be on
separate days, HW on Wednesday and GB on Thursday.

>I think the idea of a makeover, fashion review, etc. is a great idea.
>My personal opinion is that we try to make an effort to make both
>possible venues available, without regard to bias or competition. Ideas
>Sisters on how to do this without slighting one vendor vs the other in
>our schedule?

We can give them both good access to our people and encourage them
to both emphasize their strong points. Having two shops, both of which
appear to have a roughly equal market share, benefits the consumer.

I think the only way we could slight one or the other is to openly show
bias, and I don't think we have. As long as both of them want to have a
good relationship with us, we should work on keeping the relationship
good with both of them.
. . . . .

WEB INQUIRES:

>>traffic on this list has been low, but queries and subscriptions to
>>the main list are heavy. We're again at an all time high and about to
>>pass the 400 mark on the main list. Web site hits are up as well. If
>>these are any indication of interest, we will surely have a very heavy
>>turnout

>WOW!!

>I must say, I'm quite impressed :) While we may only get 30-40% of a
>turnout of these 400 inquiries, Sisters, we're doing something really
>Great here and are making a difference vs the canned Fantasia Fair/SCC
>type of conferences. I'm so thrilled to here about the number of hits.

The list is actually down to about 375 again, due to the bounces and the
unsubscribes from the big mailing on the 5th.

Attendance been between 25 and 30% of the list count over the past few
years, and if anything, the percentage of the list who attends has been
dropping a bit. I estimate we will have around 500 on the list by DLV
time this year. On target for around 125 total bodies, I would say, and
again, never the whole group in one place at any one time.

How many volunteers do we have for the Crowd Control Committee. :)
. . . . .

A-LE-INN and AREA-51:

>I hope you early arrivers plan on attending quite a unique Pre-Pre-DLV
>side trip. Aiko has really gone out of her way to make sure that those
>of us that do the Monday side-trip be a fun time. I'll certainly be
>there. My question to Aiko and the DLVOrg group is do we need a head
>count for this venue?

As of this time, I'm planning to include this in the activity sign-up
beginning in March. However, as we know from experience, exact head
count will be changing right up to the day of the activity.
. . . . .

JUBILEE and the LIMO TOUR:

>Aiko and I have been corresponding off-line about coordination of this
>and with the Limos picking us up at Bally's and CGT with minimal wait
>period, compared to last year and the wait at the MGM Grand. We'll have
>that all worked out so DLV attendees will not feel uncomfortable with
>regard to the time after the show and when the limo picks us up.

I'm sure we can find out exactly when the show will let out.

>With respect to timing, I'd like to have the limos 'stocked' when the
>limos arrive to pick us up,

I think that is a VERY good idea!

>so I would ask that we have a 'preference list' as to what the limos
>need to be stocked with about 30 days prior to DLV'03. I plan on
>leaving Jubilee show 1 hour early to take one limo to go to the nereast
>'store' to stock up all the limos.

I don't think you or anybody needs to miss the show to do this. I'm sure
we can find a non-showgoer who is willing to make a run to a local
boozatorium either that afternoon or evening.

>With reagard to payment for the limos and the stocking of the limos, I
>am going to request advance payment, similar like I did for LaFemme
>last year.

IMAO, turnout will be much better if there is the option to pay in
person at DLV. Assuming the same limo company, they seemed to be very
flexible WRT the number of limos right up to the day of the tour.

>I would also like to ask with the sign-up, those that want to go on
>the limo tour to specify what they would like to have in their limos
>and the stocking thereof. Details can be worked out later, but Annie,
>if you don't mind, please put down on the sign-up list what the
>attendees would like so I can purchase accordingly (e.g., champange,
>liquor and mixers (type of mixers), beer, soft drinks, munchies,
>etc.).l anticipate about a 3 hour limo tour after Bally's, with pics
>and the restroom rush (at the 4 Queens again, I suspect).

We can put a refreshment preference section in the sign-up screen.

I would suggest that a "Bio Break" be planned for a location that is
known to be t-friendly. Many of our people are a bit shy of using public
facilities, and I would hate to see any more resorting to makeshift
containers in the limos. That doesn't really fit the occasion, IMAO.

>Aiko and Yvonne, will we have a chance to have 'walkie-talkie' comms
>again like we did last year. I think that worked well just to keep us
>coordinated?

Yvonne, am I correct that about any FRS walkie-talkie will work with the
ones you have? I see these things on sale all the time, and I would be
willing to pick one (or two) up to use for this if they will all work
together.
. . . . .

SBS Garden Party:

>Mindy, You and I need to coordinate this and get the plans in the
>works. Thanks for letting us use your home for the SBS Garden Party!

See Mindy's item below. (above?)

Show and workshops:

Aiko writes:

(Jubilee seating for those not paying in advance for preferred seats.)

>Also, is it Section A or Section D for the rest of the crew.

Uh, I dunno. Which is it? :) Ladies? (Gentlemen?)
. . . . .

>I'm thinking that there should be a cap of 15-20 for the mannerisms
>thing at HW and GB. As you've mentioned previously, both will probably
>have a lot of good ideas for us to practice.

I think a good strategy might be to cap the paid one at GB to a limit
Steph specifies, and to have a higher cap for the free one, taking into
account such things as demand (far more for the free one that does not
require a send-in hoop jump) and perceived value (more individual
attention at the paid one) and such.

Morning stuff

Kate writes:

>I am not an old hand at this so please excuse the dumb idea's and
>questions sometimes.

Really no such thing as a dumb idea or question here. The whole idea
of doing what we're doing probably seemed absurd not that many years
ago.

>Shopping trip arrangements and next morning trips might be something
>which could be decided upon at a group get together ie:- first night at
>Flex and only the day would be set in putty so to speak.

>Talking about it with others who are interested in doing it would
>certainly help me to get motivated and will be a good way of finding
>out where everyone is staying', How many, Time frame and Where a pre
>shopping meeting place would be.

>It might be nice if we decided to get mobile then do a brecky buffet or
>coffe before driving out to Primm or doing the nosh out there instead,
>Everyone has a favourite spot to eat in Vegas and loves to share it
>with friends.

>As you "Annie have said, we might consider parking at Sahara and
>leaving the odd car there in order to travel together. I think a lot of
>people who might not send their ideas in for fear of criticism or such
>might be more willing to join the crowd when they see how friendly they
>can be, At least this was my impression of the DLV group last year.

I'm gonna agree with some of this, and disagree with some. Remember,
it's ok to disagree here. :)

I can see a shopping trip working where the places to shop are
determined in real-time by those present. That has worked before a few
times. In some cases we've had a laundry list of places to go, and
skipped those that nobody was interested in.

There are two things that history has shown us, however.

Activities have to have a definite pre-announced starting time and a
definite and convenient place to meet. If they don't, many of our
people will not get the word.

One other thing that we've found out does not work is making plans for
something during a social session at a bar.

>Similarly any morning stuff could be arranged that way, Being
>spontaneous while on vacation is what makes it a good vacation.

Being spontaneous can work in small groups, but in a group of 100 it
does not. I think back to our real-time discussion in 1997 on where to
go after the show. We spent more time and energy discussing it than
doing it.

SO's, BS's, and SB's:

Mindy writes:

>well computer problems finally fixed.. and here is some info..

>as to the so gather.. diane would like some feedback.. some last year
>said they prefered a seperate happy hour and some liked the lunchion
>format.. as for the day.. any day would be fine for lunch.. if a happy
>hour then probley thurs or friday..

Thanks. I'm gonna copy this part over to the general list as well, since
there may be some interest and feedback there too.

>also include me as a big sister again.. last year was a gas with my two
>little sisters..

Done! :)

>also diane will be available as a big sister to so's with concerns.

I'll also note that there will be a Big Sister available for SO's as
well.

>at some point soon have somebody from souther bells get in touch with
>me so we can work out the details of the garden party..

SBS people, there ya go. :)

Shuttle comments:

>Yes, I would be willing to pay a small fee for a shuttle van. That
>would make getting around Vegas so much easier.

>I will fill out the registration form shortly. I am lookig forward to

>Jamie R.

Also, I vote YES on the shuttle vans.

Hugs,
Cindy
. . . . .

>ALTHOUGH I'M DRIVING MY PERSONAL CAR TO LAS VEGAS, I'D LIKE TO LET YOU

>THAT SERVICE IS AVAILABLE AS A BACKUP IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES OR SHOULD
>I HAVE WAY TOO MUCH FUN TO DRIVE SAFELY BACK TO THE HOTEL AFTER SOME OF

I would be interested in the shuttle van.
