Jubilee at Bally's:

Aiko writes:

Since you're the one who volunteered, I think the show selection should
be your call. I haven't heard any objections to Jubilee, and the group
has had more than enough time for any objections or alternative show
suggestions.

Wow, decisions, decisions!

It's really gonna be your call as to how we do this, depending on how
much effort and hoop-jumping you want to go thru.

You mention 90 days before show time a couple times above. That point
would be toward the end of January. I can say most certainly that less
than 1/3 of our people will be registered by then. History has shown
that we'll get a surge of registrations once we start, then a lull, then
a rush in the last several weeks before DLV. About half will register
within the month before DLV.

>Last option - get your own #@%& tickets.

Actually, that one does not sound half bad. :) :) :)

>I personally {don't have any} experience with Bally's. Don't know if
>they are T-friendly, T-oblivious, or T-unfriendly.

We've had people stay there and play there on occasions, but no large
groups there at any time I'm aware of. They are affiliated with Paris
and MGM, both which are known to gladly take our money and treat us
like anybody else with $$$.

>Although, I can't imagine a major hotel being unfriendly to any paying
>customer/casino player.

That's the way it almost always is. They are not gonna turn away
the business unless they suffer from a severe case of anal-cranial
inversion.

>So, I think it would be wise to communicate with the Hotel
>manager/asst. mgr to inform them of who we are and what we expect -
>nothing more than just simple dollar carrying tourists on vacation.

I would say that if you want to do this, it would probably not hurt, but
my personal style is more along the line of don't-ask-don't-tell. :) The
three times I coordinated the Kenny Kerr show, I let them know there
would be a group coming, gave them an estimated headcount, but didn't
say anything about the unique nature of the group. In all cases, they
never said boo when we appeared and saw the show.

Likewise, I don't think Tina said anything when she coordinated Splash
and Folies, likewise I don't think Monique said anything for La Femme.

>We need to make a decision within the next 3 weeks so I can do the
>communication and do the 90 day prior thingy.

Unfortunately, realistically, I don't think there's any way we can get
anything that even approximates a headcount within the next few weeks.

We could guess at 40-50 or so, but ...

Other than somebody (not me) putting up some front money, I don't see
how the entire group can be accommodated in advance.

A compromise might be to do your next-to-last-option and let the early
birds pay in advance for the preferred (booth B) seats, and have the
rest get C section or run-of-the-house seats up until the day of the
show. If you want to do something like this, let's get an announcement
in the next general mailing, which will come out the first Sunday in
January, right after pre-registration opens.

I sure don't know Kenny, other than from being an occasional audience
member for many years.

Ladies (gentlemen), anybody closer to the source?

>BTW, Rudy de la Mor does a funny show and he may be able to come in for
>us perhaps from L.A. Another possibility......

Rudy's show is very funny! He also connects with the audience better
than almost anybody else I've seen. He holds the attention of the
audience very well. I think our crowd would love him!

Hint: If you wanna score points, bring him a box of Krispy Kreems about
3/4 of the way into his show. :)

>There are drag shows almost every night now so it might be nice if
>we could get some other sort of entertainment to mix it up a bit.
>Michael, then Kenny or Rudy would be a nice evening.

If we have a choice for entertainment that evening, I think a
dinner-show by Michael followed by Rudy would be about as great as we
could get. Kenny would be a good show also, but I just have a feeling
that Michael followed by Rudy would be the one to go for.

Comments ladies (gentlemen)?

We have a winner:

First person to register was Michelle (NV) who registered early Sunday
morning, followed shortly by Aiko and Leeanna.

Several others registered after this.

No problems were reported.

Thanks to everybody who helped to shake this down.

Thoughts on meals and bars:

Anya writes:

>>I've enjoyed most every meal I've eaten at DLV. In fact I'm hard pressed
>>to think of a single one I did not enjoy.

>Me too.

>>Other than for the purpose of consuming mass quantities as fuel, at
>>DLV we've planned meals primarily as social activities. You know,
>>enjoy life, enjoy food, enjoy each other's company. That's why we eat
>>together at DLV.

>I hope it stays that way.

I see no reason to change this at all. Meals typically provide a bit of
this sought-after social time, but the focus is on smaller (4-8) groups
than one large group.

>>For the most part, those in
>>our group seated at other tables might just as well be someplace else,
>>leading to the conclusion ...

>Agreed.

>>there's no real reason that all (most) of our people have to eat at
>>the same place at the same time.

>You have a good point here.

>>If we have too many people to make it practical to all eat at one place,
>>then let's go to two places, or three, or more.

>Why not.

No reason at all why we can't. This year we probably won't have to split
up the group. Next year we may have to, but hey, no big whoop. If we do,
it still gives that small-group interaction to our people.

Another factor to consider is that when planning for a meal for many,
some compromises often have to be made to keep everybody happy, or to at
least keep the griping down to a tolerable level. If the menu is to be
limited, there have to be items that will cover most tastes. If there's
only one entree, it has to be one that most can enjoy. That leads us to
practical choices of such things as overdone leather sirloin, overdone
so-called prime rib, rubber chicken.

>>Our people do want to have dining companionship. Meals are often more
>>enjoyable if there's company present, plus many of our people are
>>still a bit shy of going to their hotel's buffet or coffee shop on
>>their own.

>I am in agreement here. i would say my favorite meal was when a friend
>and I went to the Paris buffet for dinner. We tried to get a few
>others to go but were unsuccessful.

I would like to see us continue to utilize the buffets. They are part of
the Las Vegas culture.

Although we don't have it on the schedule yet (I'll probably put it in
there by the time this gets out) we usually have a buffet thing on
Sunday following the side trip. We also have one for lunch at the
Bellagio following the air tours, and of course the Saturday thing at
the San Remo buffet/coffee shop.

The only evening where a meal is not certain is Thursday (still no
yes-or-no answer -- do or do not have food service at Flex) so maybe a
midscale/upscale buffet prior to show/CGT would work.

Other than the line factor, most buffets are able to feed 50-100 people
quickly with no advance hoop-jumping. We have yet to see that many for
any meals at any buffet yet. Three good-size tables is about all we've
had in our history.

>But two people enjoying a really good dinner is better than one
>person, and also better than a crowd eating a mediocre meal.

This is an excellent point. I do think that smaller groups eating good
meals is a much better approach than one large group eating rubber
chicken. (Hey, how about doing BOTH leather sirloin AND rubber chicken,
yeah, that's the ticket. {meow} NOT! :)

Yeah I know, bitch-bitch-bitch. People are starving in Armenia and here
I am bitching about rubber chicken. :)

>>the choices. At dinner time, the hostess gets a table for how many
>>there are at the time. Then after dinner everybody meets at one common
>>place for drinks and whatever.

>Another good idea.

Something like this could add variety of cuisine as well as choice of
entree. When planning for a mob, you have to select a place that is not
too far from the middle of the road, meaning one that will have
something most everybody will like. Milano's is a good example, although
they are primarily a Southern Italian red-sauce place, they have a good
variety of Mexican, Greek, and even burgers and fries. Most palates can
be covered quite well.

However, there may be some people who would prefer more exotic places,
and although it might not be practical to send the whole crowd to say
some short-menu regional cuisine place, it could be an enjoyable time
for those who do indeed enjoy such food.

>>The point I'm making is that dinner crowd size does not have to be a
>>limiting factor for DLV.

This is also what most of our people seem to prefer, although there are
times to be loud. I had similar observations both at Pinkfest and Fall
Harvest. A bar which allows conversation seems to be more preferred for
most evenings than a dance bar.

Classes:

>Please count me in as one of those gals who'd like to take those
>classes on "walking the walk" and "talking the talk" as you so
>graciously put it.

Assuming this is to happen, we will have the sign-up beginning in March
as we do the activity headcounts and such.

What I think we really need now, and what we have not received much of,
is feedback regarding the what-where-when-who and such of the sessions.

Aiko is kinda standing there holding the ball on this, and needs some
feedback to know which way to throw it.

Specifically ...

1. Do we want to offer such a session or sessions? I would say that as
of this time, there appears to be interest, and that both vendors have
proposals on the table. Unless there's a strong reason to not do it,
it appears that at least one of these will happen.

2. Big burning question, and we need some answers as we don't want to
keep the vendors hanging. Do we want to go with one proposal (if so,
which one) or go with both. Our sole comment on this said to go with
both, but I'm sure there are more comments out there. Please speak
freely.

We currently have two proposals on the table. One is a throw-in to the
proposed open house at Hidden Woman. The other is a paid session ($10)
at Glamour Boutique, which would most likely not be held in conjunction
with an open house.

I would like to hear some comments regarding whether you think our
people would prefer a more informal free session, a more rigorous paid
session, or both. Also, which firm and instructor would work best for
our people, or do we do both?

Let's hear some chatter from the infield on this one, gang!

3. Timing and logistics. Where on the schedule? A larger related topic
is vendor open house scheduling.

DLV purpose:

I agree on this point.

>We don't need them, do we?

You are correct that we don't need people who are on the make in order
to have a successful DLV.

We want a good mix of people, all who identify with the theme of DLV. I
am very uneasy saying that DLV is for {label} people and that it is not
for {label} people, but I know I and others have done so at times.

Groups tend to self-regulate.

We need to make it very clear that the primary purpose of DLV is not to
find somebody to wake up with the next morning.

For example, we've made it very clear that practicing the World's Oldest
Profession at DLV is unwelcome. Hooking/soliciting is clearly illegal
and reflects very badly on the group.

What I also want to make clear is that it is the behavior, not the
people, that we object to.

I don't think we need to take any overt steps to discourage our people
from doing what comes naturally. However, I think we should continue to
plan our activities to support the original goals of DLV, those being to
celebrate life and enjoy each others company.

Our selection of activities and venues indicates the social nature of
our event.

>Thanks for having the guts to say this.

I really don't think I'm sticking my neck out at all on this. I'm just
reflecting what I'm hearing from the majority of the people who value
DLV for what it's always intended to be.
