Discussion list digest:
There have been a few requests for a digest version of the DLV
Discussion List, which already has been getting some good bursts of
conversation.
The advantage to the digest is that you will not get many small
messages cluttering your inbox. The disadvantage is that depending on
the volume of the list, there may be delays until you receive some
items.
The digest version is ready to test. If anybody wants to be switched
from individual messages to digest, please let me know.
I would also encourage you to try out the web interface to this:

Moving forward:
Things are moving forward, gang, and looking good. Hits on the web site
are increasing, and we've been averaging one mailing list addition per
day for the past week or so. We've had a few good bursts of traffic
on the discussion list, as most of you know.
Everything is pointing to a very enthusiastic group of people who
will be attending next April!
One thing I would like to remind everybody of, especially those who have
recently joined this list, is that it's ok to disagree, and it's ok to
question just about anything anybody proposes or says, as long as we
continue to respect each other and each others' opinions. If I or the
others ever appear to be poopoo-ing your idea, remember, we are
disagreeing with your ideas and not coming down on you personally.
Anyway ...
Now that we have our hotel issue behind us (see below) our main focus
between now and April needs to be on activities and scheduling.
The good news is that we have an excellent start. We've done a very good
job getting the calendar outlined and filled in with some really great
activities.
The bad news is ... well ... there really isn't any bad news. :)
Back in June, our target was to have a rough calendar of activities by
the first of December. We're more than a month ahead of schedule on
that.
Only thing is, I would be surprised if there isn't at least one wrench
in the works between now and April regarding something opening/closing,
change in attitude, change in our priorities, etc.
There's very little, if any, that needs to be taken care of immediately.
We're still 5 months out, and have quite a bit of breathing room as of
this time. However, let's keep on top of things.
We'll start copying the full detailed schedule in these mailings. It
will be at the bottom, following the summary, with nothing under it
except the administrivia, so if you don't want to review it each time,
you can safely quit reading at that point in the mailing.
On second thought, let's start this next mailing. This mailing is HUGE
already without it. :)
Let's go over a brief laundry list of some outstanding items:
1. Welcome Celebration on Tuesday. Any ideas for a location? Not a
pressing need to decide as of this time, but we should be thinking ...
I would suggest Flex, but CGT will be there on Thursday and we have
the Farewell Celebration there on Sunday.
2. Air tours. We have this scheduled for both Thursday and Friday.
Is that what you (Densie, Gina, Tony) want to do? Will this still
work assuming golf will be one of these days? I know there is some
chat on this on the discussion list.
3. Speaking of golf, Mindy, is this solid for Friday?
4. Side trip on Sunday. See item below.
5. Thursday show. Any more thoughts on which one? Aiko?
6. Shopping at Primm. Kate, do you have a decision on the date/time?
7. SO's gathering. Diane, Mindy? Any decision on day/time yet?
8. Daily breakfast/brunch? Is this a dead item? Going once ...
9. Straight dance club. There's been quite a bit of chatter regarding
this on the discussion list. Do we want to consider this as an
alternate-track activity some evening, or just let those who want
to do this do it on their own? Comments, gang?
10. Retro Night? Going once ...
11. Vendor open houses. See notes below. Comments?
12. Bowling. Tony, any ideas on day/time?

Vote results:
According to the votes, the following will be our suggested hotels for
DLV 2003 (in alphabetical order):
Imperial Palace

San Remo
Tropicana
Vote totals are as follows:

Imperial Palace: Yes: 11 No: 7 Tot: 18
Bellagio: Yes: 9 No: 9 Tot: 18
San Remo: Yes: 14 No: 4 Tot: 18

Last counted vote was dated Wed, 6 Nov 2002 01:48:37 -0800 and the polls
were closed at that time on Thursday.
One vote was received very late, well outside of the poll-open window
and the headers did not indicate that it was mailed prior to the closing
so this was unfortunately discarded.
One ballot was delayed in sending. The system that receives mail for
that particular domain was not accepting the mail. A ballot was sent to
that person using an alternate address and the mail logs indicate it
was accepted by the receiving system.
Since a few of the votes are close, raw votes appear at the end of this
mailing, with the left-hand side of the message-IDs.
If you sent in a vote prior to 1:39 Thursday morning and don't think you
see it here, please let me know. I've edited the responses slightly for
format and case so I could count them with a script.
The only surprise to me is that there was not as much support for an
upscale (such as Bellagio) option as I had expected. Bellagio fans are,
of course, free to make a personal recommendation on the DLV Discussion
List.
Thanks to all who voted. As the numbers show, each vote was very
significant. I think we have a very good set of options for our DLV 2003
people.

Scheduling:
Monique writes:

I do agree that the limo thing will probably work best on Thursday,
assuming there are no major changes in the things that DLV has no
control over. There's more comments and discussion on this below.
>As for the SBS Garden Party, I would like to tenatively suggest that

I'll place this on the schedule, tentatively of course, for Saturday
afternoon. Over the past couple years, shopping and touristy things have
not been that well attended on Saturday afternoon. I have a feeling that
something like a SBS Garden Party will get a better turnout.
I don't think Kate would want to do the Primm shopping thing on
Saturday, so I don't believe you will have any major activity to be
up against for this one. Since the term "garden party" implies that
dressing up is ok, I'm sure this will have an excellent turnout.
>As I see it, Thursday is pretty much fully booked as far as venues, as

>Saturday for the SBS Garden Party. What do ya'll think?
I kinda like the idea of having one afternoon to focus on the various
vendor open houses, but I dunno if the people at GB and HW would like
it.
I was gonna say that when I'm out there next month I would stop in and
ask each of them if this was cool or not, but it looks like plans have
changed and I will not be needed out there, at least in December, so
if anybody local who is on good terms with both shops would like to
stop in and touch base and see if a "DLV Vendor Open House" day would
be ok on the same day for both shops, please do so.
I've always wanted us (DLV) to treat both GB and HW fairly and equally,
and visiting both of them on the same afternoon does that quite well,
since they are within a block of each other. For the most part, they are
clean competitors (knocking on wood), so I really think there's a fair
chance they will go for this.
A third factor in this equation is Vegas Girl Wigs. Susan said she is
interested in some kind of an open house thing for the DLV people. We
could do that the same day as the GB/HW thing, but their place is a
couple miles east of GB/HW. I don't know if it would be a good thing
or not to do VGW on the same afternoon or not.

Yes, definitely ... /me will not be L7 :)
If I may add, on Saturday night during FH there will be the annual Night
of 1000 Stars Gala. This is a big dress-up affair with very close ties
to the mainstream. It's a lot of fun, and has been included in the FH
schedule. I highly recommend it.

Limo and CGT:
I'm breaking Michelle's note up into two items, which are somewhat
related. I want to keep the threads and the trains of thought separate
on these issues.
Michelle (NV) writes:
>In my self interest, let me say that i would prefer the limo tour to be
>on Wednesday night.
>Since right now with a production show and the tour scheduled then CGT
>looks to be preempted from both sides.
CGT is definitely not preempted. It's one of two options for the main
activity of that evening, the other being the production show. History
has shown that the non-Saturday show will draw about 1/2 of our people
at best.
The bottom line is, yes, you will have a good turnout for CGT.
There's only one thing I think that would throw a snag into DLV's
particpation in CGT, and that is if CGT changes day or location between
now and April.
CGT fills one need that was stressed after DLV 2002, that being more
quality social time. The way I see it, those who want more such time, or
who do not want to pay for the show, or who just don't find the show du
jour to be of interest, will most likely gravitate to CGT for the
evening.
What I think would help the CGT turnout would be if food is available at
Flex. I know they were trying to get some kind of food operation going,
but I never heard if it got off the ground.
If Flex doesn't have food, something in the general vicinity would be
appropriate, I'm sure, but there will be the discontinuity of a move,
with some fallout. Besides, there are still a number of our people who
are still a bit too shy to wander in to the hotel coffee shop or buffet
in girlmode, so I do think that food in a place they would be
comfortable with would add to the turnout.
>Plus I would like to attend the limo tour this year (not to mention the
>production) since last year I helped organize it only to have to end up
>working that night.
What I think of as the ideal situation to cover all bases would be for
the limo tour to start shortly after the production show lets out, and
pick up people at two locations, one being the show, and the other being
Flex to catch the CGT people. This would encourage the non-show people
who want to do the limo tour to go to CGT, and it would allow you and
any other CGT regulars to join us on the limo tour.
>Also, Im sure with this much notice, we can arrange to have Kareoke for
>ClubGirltalk that night.
I don't see karaoke as a make or break item at all, and I don't think
there's any need to try to plan for it at CGT unless there is an
outspoken demand for it.
Karaoke attracts a small but significant number of our people who are
very much into it. I kinda tag along with them since I enjoy their
company and have had a good time listening. (I know Tina is trying to
get me to take a turn at the mike, but I learned the hard way a few
years ago that it's not such a hot idea. :) I think the demand is for
Goodtimes brand karaoke on Wednesday with the MC/KJ that they like.
I really think that CGT will draw people on its own, without any form of
entertainment such as show, karaoke, etc.

Girl Talk Magazine:
I'm going to speak very freely here. Please don't take any of this the
way it's not intended ...
I would like to see us think of Glub Girl Talk (the weekly gathering and
the DLV activity), and potential coverage by Girl Talk Magazine, as two
distinct issues, although they are interrelated by being sponsored by
the same firm.
I see CGT as primarily noncommercial, even though it is affiliated with
Girl Talk Magazine, and, of course, Flex makes $$$ each time they show
up.
The success of Club Girl Talk is measured in how many lives are touched
and the smiles on the faces of those who attend. (Sounds familiar, huh?)
I'm particularly impressed with your (Michelle's) efforts toward LV CGT.
It's been one of the best things to date to actually get the local LV t*
community out, and that's a hard group to reach.
On a personal note, I was looking forward to attending CGT when I was
planning to be there next month. Unfortunately business plans have
changed and I will not be there in December. If this is rescheduled
and I'm there over a Thursday, I'll be sure not to miss it. But back
to the subject ...
Girl Talk Magazine is a business. They do provide a valuable service to
the community in the course of doing their business, but their success
is measured, primarily, by the numbers on the bottom line.
Being a business is not necessarily a Bad Thing<tm>, but we should
approach the two (Club Girl Talk and Girl Talk Magazine) differently.
Michelle (NV) writes:
>I think especially in light of the feature article we're planning to
>have in Girltalk Magazine, we should concentrate on making it as
>successful as possible.
I do want to see the CGT activity be as successful as possible, as I do
every other activity that our people have taken the effort to plan.
We want to have a good relationship with both Girl Talk Magazine and the
Las Vegas chapter of Club Girl Talk, as we have with other groups and
commercial ventures.
It would indeed be a feather in our cap to have some national exposure
in one of the established hardcopy magazines.
However, I don't see this (publicity, coverage) as an absolute necessity
for DLV, I see it as a secondary consideration in perspective to our
primary (and only) mission, that being planning a vacation that our
people will remember and cherish for a lifetime.
If we look at this from the business perspective, we (DLV) are providing
them (Girl Talk Magazine) a service. We are giving them (at very little
cost to them) some excellent (and exclusive as of this day and hour)
material for their publication.
DLV is the proverbial (hu)man-bites-dog story that journalists love,
with SCC/FF/FH/TT/whatever being dog-bites-(hu)man.
From another angle, many people go ga-ga over the press, showing them
obsequious deference. I've even seen self-appointed t*-community leaders
show fawning attentiveness to them. I want the center of attention at
DLV to remain on the individual participants as a whole, and not
diverted to those covering the event.
At some events, they (press) are indeed a major distraction. I want to
avoid that as much as possible if they are to do a feature on DLV.
Speaking of which, I have yet to hear anything definite from Girl Talk
Magazine regarding attending and covering DLV. Twice now I've asked them
(Gina?) what coverage they have in mind and I've received no response.
If they do want to cover DLV, they should work with our group here as to
conditions and expectations. We need to know what they have in mind, and
we need to let them know what we do and do not expect if they plan to
cover DLV 2003.
I'm not at all opposed to any media coverage, but I want it to be on our
terms, and not to distract from the climate of DLV.
Comments, ladies? (gentlemen?)

Side trip to Area 51:

I could see it working any of several ways, as a pre-pre-DLV thing on
Monday, as you say, or as an alternate activity during the week, or as a
Sunday activity.
>We bounced the idea of 2 tracking with the High Tea on Sunday, but we
>want to do the High Tea during that time. An alternative would be
>Tuesday, but that leaves little time to get ready for Pre-DLV dinner.
If you don't do it Sunday, I'll then propose some kind of a shorter side
trip for that timeslot. Maybe a drive around Lake Mead, maybe a Mt
Charleston thing ... For some reason, the high tea thing doesn't really
interest me, and I know there are others who would rather be out and
about doing maybe something touristy.
>Cost would be the van rental and gas. I think it could be fairly
>inexpensive if we had 6 or 7 girls splitting the cost of a Caravan and
>gas.
I don't think the cost would be a problem for anybody, and a rental
van saves the wear and tear on peoples' own vehicles.
>This side trip might be of interest to the girls who arrive early.
>Monique, Yvonne, and I are probably going to do this anyway, so if more
>would like to join us, we could tri-coordinate this pre-DLV venue.
Now for my own personal thoughts ... gee, I always seem to throw a
wrench in the works, don't I ...
It might actually be better to have it on the Monday before DLV, as you
proposed, since there will be nothing competing for the time, and
everybody will be fresh and not burned out.
The side trips have never been heavily attended, and twice we've
scrubbed them on the spot due to lack of interest. Quite honestly, you
will probably have a better turnout doing it Monday with the few who
are in early than to have it either on a DLV weekday or on Sunday.
This could also be the activity that either formally or informally
extends DLV one day as we have at times discussed.
