Org List:

This is the DLV 2003 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Ongoing activity database appears on line at:

Various loose ends and such:

Here's a laundry list of some items on the plate that may need attention:

Hotels:

We have just over a month until we will need to have our call for votes on
our suggested hotels. The hotels that have been placed in nomination so
far are:

Sahara
Imperial Palace
Bellagio
San Remo
Tropicana

If you don't see your favorite hotel on this list and want to see it
considered, please send in a brief note to the effect of "I nominate
{hotel}" via e-mail or just reply to this mailing.
. . . . .

Publicity: Laura, any news on getting the DLV articles in print?
. . . . .

Religious services: I think Leah was the one looking into this. Do you
have anything yet?.
. . . . .

Golf: No response that I'm aware of to the questions posed in last month's
mailing. I'm going to repeat the item this month.
. . . . .

Activities:

Daily brunch/lunch? This was a hot topic for a while. Is there still any
interest in this. Anybody wanna take this one on?

Bowling? Sounds to me like a good weekday afternoon activity. Any takers
to coordiate this?

Side trip(s)? Alie-Inn (area 51) was suggested. Is this gonna happen? I
know Aiko was interested in this at one time. Any other side trip ideas?

Retro night? This would probably work as an adjunct to any of several
things. Do we want to pursue this?

Red Shoe Night? Ditto. I know Tina is hot on this one.

Shopping trip to Primm? IIRC Kate volunteered to coordinate this. Any
suggestion on what day for this?

Swimming: Mindy, any thoughts to which day will work?
. . . . .

Trivia: Ok, I give. What *is* the name of the bar at the Sahara? :)

Shows:

As you say below, let's open this for discussion.

Thank you, Aiko! I'm sure your efforts will be appreciated by all of
the DLV 2003 people!

Yes, in fact, that could be the very first topic of discussion on the
new DLV Discussion List. We'll pose the question in the Sept-Oct mailing
this week (wow, looks like it will go out tomorrow) and invite everybody
to jump in.

There's some other discussion below regarding the limo tour.

And I'm sure you have only scratched the surface. I'm sure some of those
you are attracting will also participate for some or all of DLV. Through
the years, about 20% of our people have been from the LV area.

If I may take the liberty of speaking for the group, I think what is
wanted WRT time at Flex and CGT is time to socialize, meaning if there
is entertainment, it should be non-loud and not inhibit conversation.

We also don't wanna OD on shows, as we did in 1999. We will have two
shows as feature activities, at least one more as an option, and a few
lounge type entertainment things as well.

That's what I think the group wants, at least. :)

Yes, unless something unexpected or tragic occurs.

I see the limo tour fitting either Wednesday or Thursday, depending on
how things develop. ... However ...

Wednesday is developing as an eclectic mix from which people can pick
and choose, beginning with happy hour and dinner at Sasha's, with
options of staying for Cagle or whatever entertainment they have, going
to the Improv, Karaoke at Goodtimes, and that would be a good evening
for the casino night that has been discussed.

It looks like Thursday will be a multi-track evening, with CGT being one
choice, and some kind of a show (see Aiko's note) being another. It may
be possible for some to start out at CGT and then go on to the show if
the timing and location of the show permit.

Question to Michelle and the others who frequent Flex: Did they ever get
their food service operating? IIRC, when I was there last April they
were just starting it up, but I don't remember seeing anybody eating
there when I was there several times in May.

That might be desired by those who want a minimum of moves over Thursday
evening. I'm gonna pencil in a Happy Hour for Thursday at Flex and that
(food) would give them something convenient to eat as well.

The way it appears to me, at this very day, hour, minute, and second,
it looks like the limo tour would be a better fit on Thursday, as it
looks like the big dress-up show will occur on that night.

No definite plans to do La Cage this time around, but the type of show
and the venue for the Thursday show have not been decided yet.

>(Rumours are that Kenny Kerr is also putting his Boylesque show back
>together. Staytuned for further details)

I hope Kenny gets a consistent show going again. Taking a trip to the
real world, however, I do not think it would be a good idea to make or
hold any of our plans in the hope that this happens between now and
April.

Speaking of the discussion list:

I'm taking the liberty of adding the DLVORG group to the discussion
list, since I think it's very important that everybody here is well
aware of what is going on there. This will be a silent addition, you
will not see any introductory message, but you may see items appear
that have the "dlvdisc" prefix.

For those who may be a bit confused over this, this coming year we will
use the main DLV mailing list for announcements and other items of very
high importance, and move all of the Q&A, discussion, chit-chat, etc. to
a new forum, the DLV Discussion List.

This is a response to the (valid) comments last year that the mailing
list was becoming too verbose and people were skimming/skipping and
missing important items.

The DLV Discussion List appears in two forms, a mailing list under
separate subscription, and a web forum.

It's active now, but not much is in there yet. Hopefully the activity
will pick up with the call for discussion above.

San Remo does appear to be a nice place. I'm glad they are receptive to
our needs and it looks like it will be a good fit for the Saturday
goings-on next DLV.

One thing on the Boardwalk, if you want this to be considered as one of
the suggested hotels for DLV 2003, please send in a nomination for it,
as it has not been nominated yet.

You're very welcome. :)

Thank you {blush}. :)

>I tend to write too *wordy* in trying to explain the idea that I'm

Actually, I think it's much better to be too verbose and more explicit
than it is to be brief and unclear.

>I also agree that most returnees will probably stay at the same places
>they stayed at last year if they were satisified with that hotel, or if
>it has become their personal favorite place to stay.

Seems to me that most people were indeed satisfied, with some
exceptions. It appears that most of the DLV 2001 people who returned for
DLV 2002 stayed at the same place.

>We have repeat attendees and new people coming from all over the world,
>from different backgrounds, different tastes, different economic buget
>limits, etc. I can understand the good points discussed in selecting
>one hotel, and the good points in selecting hotels in one area for DLV
>attendees.

The call to concentrate seems to have come from two issues, confusion and
transportation. Just prior to DLV 2002 it was mentioned that it was very
confusing to have three suggested hotels. Just after DLV 2002 there were
comments about the unease of transportation, which did not really appear
to be echoed on the feedback survey.

I think if we give reasons for why we're suggesting the various hotels,
and why we're suggesting the number that we do via the vote in November,
the confusion about our methods will be eliminated.

As for transportation, there is no single hotel or set of hotels from
which there will be no transportation issue. With rare exception, each
activity will involve some kind of a ride or movement.

>I also agree with you in that no matter what the vote is, having a

>information criteria it will/can have would help any person that plans

I want to give out a general description of each property, where it is,
what amenities it has, the satisfaction and comfort ratings from last
DLV's feedback, and pointers to independent rating sites such as
www.ratevegas.com and cheapovegas.com.

>Not to sound like a politican, but however this issue turns out, I will
>cheerfully and fully support the group's final decision. 8-) (TOO much
>politcial tv- infomericals)

It's your decision too. All of us have had the opportunity to nominate
our favorite places, and the group as a whole will decide which of these
we will suggest to our DLV 2003 people. Lately, there really hasn't been
much in the way of "campaigning" for votes for or against any property
or class of properties.

I do think the group will make the optimal decision in November.

I didn't really find the kid level objectionable. They were around, but
nothing like at c**2 or MGM. On the weekend, I did notice them in the
Nascar/arcade areas.

>Perhaps the time-share salesmen could

Now those people ARE obnoxious. Personally, I don't see how they can
sell that many timeshares with hotel rates in LV being quite reasonable.
They seemed to have a longer leash at the Sahara this past year.

I forgot to tell you, one of my newest toys is a Hauppauge video capture

I think this is a good idea. Those who will need a ride, whether it's
through volunteer ride share or a shuttle, if it happens, will be asked
to stay at one of the suggested places.
