This mailing:
Mostly activity items this time.
Michelle has taken the initiative to create a template for our activity
suggestions. I've gone back thru the mailings of this list and the later
ones for last year's main DLV list and taken all (most) of the
suggestions I could find and stuffed them into this template. Those I
have so far are on line at:
http://www.geekbabe.com/annie/org02arc/acts.html
Please take a look at this and see if I'm missing anything. As of now,
the only two I've marked as on the schedule are the farewell celebration
and RHPS (because it occurs at one fixed time).
I'm including the template at the end of this mailing. If you want to
use it for your suggestions, just fill it in and send it back via
e-mail. I'll then feed it into the script that generates that page.
We can then use that set of templates to generate the schedule as the
year progresses.

System issues:
First of all, I've received two reports of people who did not receive the
regular DLV July-August update. This was sent out on August 1. If you did
not receive this, please reply and request a resend.
The system that receives mail for the geekbabe.com domain was off line
for most of August 8th and August 9th due to a blown circuit breaker. If
you sent anything in around those dates and did not receive a reply or
got a bounce message, please resend.

Friday is a good question this coming year. We've traditionally had our
<quote>Welcome</quote> thing that evening, but as DLV starts earlier and
earlier in the week, we can't really call it that.
One option would be to have the "Annual Mixer" at Goodtimes on Friday
followed by dancing and whatever. Another would be to have the Mixer
on Thursday and then some kind of a show-centric evening on Friday.
The more I think about it, our largest crowd will be Friday and
Saturday, and I think it's important to have the feature activity of
one of those prime evenings be strictly social in nature.
I'm sure there will be some kind of a show Saturday. Whether that's
a legacy show, FI show, artsy-fartsy show, or whatever has yet to be
decided.
Assuming the cast and theater are still in the same place, I think
it's safe to say there will be a group from DLV going to RHPS at
midnite. A club could be an option for those who don't wanna go to
RHPS, or as a before/after thing.
Comments, gang?

I dunno. I've heard of it, but never been there. IIRC it's somewhere in
the vicinity of Keys and LVL.
Anybody been there? Would it be appropriate for one of our gatherings?

>1). Is Wed the best night for the welcome? (Personally, I think so.)
I think Wednesday is probably best for something we call a "Welcome"
celebration, wherever it may be.
>2). Is it more important to have the welcome party on Wed or have it at
>Goodtimes regardless of day?
I think we ought to think more of our traditional Goodtimes thing as our
"Annual Mixer" instead of a welcome thing, since it keeps slipping back
relative to the start of DLV. I do think (more and more the more I think
about it) that a strictly-social thing as the feature activity of one of
the prime evenings is very important.
>3). Would a welcome party work at Keys just as well? (Recall that they
>usually have singers most nights).
It would probably work well, especially when coupled with the buffet
thing that has been brought up a few times. It's been stated they could
have low-key entertainment that nite.
It might be good to start thinking of a Wednesday evening at Keys as
our "welcome" thing.
>4). Does a welcome party require a relatively quiet location?
IMAO, yes. Our people love to chat and socialize. Look at the complaints
when the volume was cranked at LVL.

Yes, possibly either a bibi or a pre-DLV thing.

Yes. :)
>When we've had alternatives to it (like in 2000) they were very poorly
>attended.
In 2000, I thought RHPS was rather poorly attended, mostly due to a time
crunch issue. I assumed the rest of the people were at the bar.
Wherever they were, they certainly were not at RHPS.
RHPS seems to hit our group from two angles. One being the true RHPS
fans, such as me, Densie, and a few others, and the other being that it
is a place where it is acceptable, even encouraged, (almost required :)
to wear the items that would never be appropriate elsewhere.
Assuming the cast and theater are still there, we can also assume there
will be a group going to RHPS.
>I don't know if its worth the effort to have an alternative activity.
I think it is important to have something as an alternative to RHPS.
Some people don't like RHPS, period, and some don't like it as often as
once per year.
>Also, I am always
>worried about splintering the group and dissipating our focus.
I don't think having two tracks at appropriate times is a bad thing.
Whenever we have an activity that does not have a broad appeal, such as
RHPS, dancing (in a loud club), golf, waterskiing, skydiving, etc.,
there will be a demand for something else. The double-edge to this sword
is that if we schedule an activity intended to be universally popular at
the same time as a fixed-time special interest thing, such as RHPS,
there will be people who will skip the planned activity.
About the only times I would want to avoid having two or more options
would be during the prime evening hours (8:00pm to 11:00pm or so) of
Friday and Saturday. This is when we get most of our people, and I
think we should try to get most of them in one place at these times.
For example, our annual Goodtimes thing starts to break up at 11:00 to
11:30 or so, as some go dancing, others go play in a casino, and still
others go to bed for the night. That's about the time a one-track
schedule can break into a multi-track thing and still serve everybody
in one way or another.
>>One new activity we had last year that I think we should consider

>It was great fun in 2001 on Friday night. This year will be different,

Although I may get shot down on this, I'm leaning strongly toward
proposing the feature activity of Friday to be a strictly social thing,
such as the "Annual Mixer" at Goodtimes. This would segue quite well to
dancing. (An alternative to dancing would be to simply stay at Goodtimes
and socialize.) Friday and Saturday will see our largest crowds no
matter what we do. (Endless-loop mode, I know.) I do think one of those
prime evenings should have a featured strictly social thing, such as
Goodtimes followed by dancing.
Another possibility would be dancing as an alternate-track item to
RHPS on Saturday.
>Assuming it is compatible with whatever the main event is on Thursday
>night, what do girls think about dancing on Thursday night, maybe
>starting at 11 PM or midnight?
Actually, dancing any (late) evening is a viable option.

>>Red Rock or Valley Of Fire.
>Since DLV starts on a Tuesday, I will probably fly in the previous

>North Rim of the Grand Canyon?
IIRC, North Rim is best accessed by driving up into Utah via route 15 and
then south via two-lane highway. Several hours each way, again, IIRC.
South Rim (main tourista area) is farther, but not that much longer a
drive, once again, IIRC.
>Are any of the Utah national parks (Zion, etc.) closer? (I drove LV to
>Zion many years ago, seems like it was 7 hours). This probably wouldn't
>really work as a day trip. Is anybody interested in doing something
>like this as an overnighter on the Sunday and Monday BEFORE DLV starts
>on Tuesday?
IIRC, Zion is closer, not too far from St George. Death Valley makes a
good day trip and is not *that* bad a drive. Had we done the thing to
Rhyolite, I was planning to return via the south portion of Death Valley
thru Pahrump.
If I'm going to N+I, I probably will not be able to be in the weekend
before DLV, but if I don't, I'm sure I can go a few days early. I am
gonna try to do N+I, since I do enjoy it.
