Moving right along:

Having decided a number of issues, it's time we move along toward discussing
and planning our actual activities. This mailing has some various items
regarding the activities and some facilities that were popular, and not so
popular, in which they might be held.

On another topic, it's totally amazing how many people have added the
address dlv@geekbabe.com to their personal address books. With the
recent onslaught of outlook virii, we've been getting a whole sh*tpot of
virus- generated file attachments sent toward the mailing list, and it's
very interesting to see who those are coming from. (Oh, and BTW, the
mailing list processor mangles file attachments so badly that they would
be totally harmless even if I did accidentally forward one to the list.)

Actually, there are some practical considerations with the Goodtimes
welcome. Tina (I think) mentioned that Goodtimes has Karaoke on Wed.
and that it might not mix well with our welcome thingy.

But anyway, we will be keeping a database of the suggestions as they
come in. We can then review them and start fitting them in to the
slots on the schedule.

Facility notes:

(This is kind of a summary and continuation of an off-line irl
discussion with one of the others regarding just this.)

Keys:

DLV 2001 people RAVED about Keys. So did the DLV 1998 people. However,
the response in 1999 and 2000 was mostly so-so.

We were turned on to Keys in 1998 by one of the local ladies. Yes, that
year the (in)famous "cold bath" and "galiano" incidents occurred at
Keys, which added to the fun {blush}. They had a good kitchen and a full
menu that year, and served food into the wee hours. DLV people seemed to
gravitate to Keys almost every night after the other activities. The
entertainment was good that year, but no single performer stood out.

The DLV 1998 people hyped up Keys so much that the 1999 people could
not wait to go there. Between May of 1998 and 1999, the kitchen had
changed hands, the menu was limited, the entertainment was good but
nothing outstanding, and the place did not live up to its one-year
reputation. It was, however, still a nice place to go have a drink.

More or less the same in 2000. Kitchen had turned over at least once
again. There were reports that the menu was very limited and the service
was slow. Still, however, it was a nice place to go have a drink. I
don't really remember the entertainment that year.

Fast-forward to 2001. Kitchen had turned over yet again, but they
had a full menu and people reported they went to Keys specifically
to eat. Entertainment, you know the story, one particular person
who stood out, who has since left Keys. People are again raving
about Keys as they did in 1998.

Looking ahead, as of this time one of the local people uses Keys for
semi-regular t* gatherings, and they have expressed a desire to host
a modest buffet for the DLV people. I see this as a Good Thing<tm>.

However, I want to avoid hyping Keys to the degree that DLV 2002
people will be disappointed if the place is not as wonderful as we
thought in 2001 (and in 1998).

Yes, we want to take them up on their buffet offer, and yes, we want
to schedule at least one evening there. If the magic remains, I'm
sure people will gravitate there other evenings as well, after our
other activities. At the very least it will be a nice place to go
have a drink.

It also has the advantage of being very easy to find, even for those
totally unfamiliar with the area.

Over the years, Keys has been at least a C+ on the grading scale,
with two years at A+.

Las Vegas Lounge:

From the feedback I've heard, both on and off line, the consensus seems
to be along this regarding LVL:

It's a nice place to go have a drink, either prior to the, uh, nightly
"entertainment", or after it during the wee hours.

However, it's too loud, too expensive, and too sleazy during the hours
when the, uh, "dancers" are on stage.

The only constant in this world is change, and LVL has been thru several
over the past few years.

I have a feeling LVL will change again, one way or another, before DLV
2002. If it does, and in which way, has yet to be seen.

Even though LVL is centrally located, only a few blocks from Keys, there
have been a number of reports that it is difficult to find. Between DLV
2000 and 2001, we had one report that a taxi driver did not even know
where it was, by both name and address.

Goodtimes:

Of all the lounges, this seems to me to be the most consistent over the
years. There was a rumor (seemed to me to be just that) in 1998 that
they were trying to make Goodtimes a men-only bar, but I never saw
any of this at all.

It's easy to find (we did have one person phone for directions this
year) but somewhat off the beaten path.

This is the one place where I'm sure there will be no sweeping changes
between now and DLV 2002.

It's my suggestion that we use Goodtimes again for our annual welcome
mixer, assuming schedule issues can be dealt with.

Freezone:

Uh, do any t-people still go there?
...

Angles/Lace:

We've had some gatherings there, but not this past year. Anybody been
there lately?
...

Others:

A few people mentioned Flex. I've seen this on Charleston, but never
stopped in. Is this good enough to want to have a gathering there? It is
somewhat out of the way, probably more so than Goodtimes.

Activity notes:

For DLV 2002 I think we need a good mix of our proven favorite activities
and some new and perhaps different ones. We can't just rewind and replay
DLV 2001. We have to keep it fresh.

I see such things as our annual Goodtimes mixer, evening at Keys, shows
of course, and even RHPS, (oh yes, golf, that's the ticket, golf), as
proven favorites which should definitely be on the plate this coming
year.

One new activity we had last year that I think we should consider
repeating is the limo tour, with or without the wino. :)

Dam tour. Proven fave! Not gonna happen since Deb is retiring. :( We
might consider taking a vanload to do the public (regular or hard hat)
tour as an alternative.

I do think we should have some kind of a side trip. Maybe not a day-long
one like the repeatedly-abortive Rhyolite expedition, but something like
Red Rock or Valley Of Fire.

New and different. Last year the air tour was a big hit for those who
went. One possible suggestion for something equally new and different
was boating and skiing. Not everybody will go for this, I know, but I
think it might be worthwhile for those who want it.

Room and golf:

I'm taking the liberty of moving this from the DLV list to the ORG
list ...

I'm not a golfer, but I tend to agree that it should be scheduled early
enough to allow people who want to play to plan for it and to work their
schedule around it.
