Scientific-Humanitarian Committee
From GenderWiki
The Scientific-Humanitarian Committee (Wissenschaftlich Humanitares Komitee) is regarded as the first LGBT advocacy organization in recorded history. The WHK was formed in pre-Weimar Germany in 1897.
Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld was one of the founding members of WHK.
The group's purpose was to raise public awareness of LGBT issues and to campaign for decriminalization of same-sex relationships, crossdressing, etc.
The original WHK remained active until 1933.
Short-lived attempts to re-form the WHK occurred in 1949 and 1962. In 1998, a new group was formed with the same name and similar purpose.
