Special mid-week mailing due to volume of responses and comments.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Starting and show times:

>I liked the way you did it in 99, with an official start on Friday
>night but an informal get-together on Thursday for those who were
>already in town.

Thanks. I think it worked well too.

>A suggestion I would make is to not schedule the shows (Follies,
>Splash, Kenny Kerr, whatever) on consecutive days. Break it up a litle
>bit. If possible, keep either Friday or Saturday as more of a party
>night and go to shows on Sunday, or Monday, or Tuesday.

Ok, that's a good thing to consider. We did get "showed-out" last year.
I think we do wanna schedule one of the popular FI shows and one of
the legacy revue-type shows, as requests and comments have shown.

>Remember how
>Keys was closed in 99 on Monday night?

Actually, iirc, it was Gypsy that was closed on Monday. I've been to
Keys on some Mondays, so I know it's open, or at least it was at one
time.

>Well, I imagine that one of the
>casino shows will be playing Monday.

Sunday and Monday are the slowest nights for the shows, and some of them
are dark on one of those nights, but not all of them. We can look over
the exact schedule as we start to firm up the schedule.

>Save at least one of the real
>party nights (i.e., Friday and Saturday) for party places.

Ok, let's keep that in mind as we start plugging in events into dates
and times. From the feedback I've heard, both here and elsewhere, the
times for socializing and partying were well liked.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Starting date:

>>>If I've got a vote here, I
>>>vote to keep it starting on Friday.

>I vote for Friday too.

There has not been an official call for votes (yet), but that's what
feedback here has shown.

>If you make it too long, it encourages the girls to drop in and out
>at different times. If you stick to a official start date, then it
>encourages them to show up then.

That's a very good point.

>And as you say, if you want to come
>early or leave late, all well and good.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Malls and shops:

>>Over the past three years, we've simply patronized the regular malls
>>and shops during normal business hours, and nobody reported any
[bobbitt]

>Well, I prefer it this way. I go there to help to learn to live life
>En Femme,

And, that's always been one purpose of DLV.

>you don't know how great it feels to be able to walk down
>a mall, windowshopping, and then going in and shopping for real.

Oh yes I do. :)

>If
>your going to make a special date for a shop to take on a whole
>squad of CD'ers, it just isn't the same.

I tend to agree. Doing this is part of the communal closet metaphor
that we've tried to avoid.

However, we must consider that many of our people are (still) a bit
too shy to go out shopping on a busy weekend in a crowded mall, let
alone trying on and buying something, so if there's the demand for
a private shopping appointment, I'm sure it could be arranged.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Starting on Thursday:

>I will be there no matter what the dates.

I will too. :) (Well, within reason. :)

>Why not start on a Thursday. Even if only a handful of girls can make
>it that would still be fine. I know some girls come in on a Thursday,
>and would rather get together for a drink and a chat then either (a)
>sit in their room by themselves, or (b) hit the strip and lose their
>bankroll at the craps table:)

If I'm hearing what I think I'm hearing, you're suggesting something
like we had last year, which was a low-key get-together for those who
are early on Thursday (which was well-attended last year), followed by
the official welcome thing on Friday.

It looks like much of the feedback is saying we should converge on
something like that, which has something for those who come early,
and doesn't exclude those (the majority in number, actually) who
arrive for the weekend.

>... (a) sit in their room by themselves,

Wow, for the life of me, I can never see this happening to anyone in
Las Vegas. It's simply too nice a place that boredom is not an option.
There are so many things to do, and things to see, and most of them
can be done in either mode.

If somebody wants to come way early, or leave way late, they should
not worry about finding something to do.

> or (b) hit the strip and lose their bankroll at the craps table:)

... or, hit the mall and lose their bankroll in the shops. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Schedule, shows, misc.:

>Since I intend to be in Las Vegas all week for N+I I would prefer a
>Thursday start. Also since I come from NZ and I loose a day crossing
>back over the International dateline I have to leave on Sunday to get
>home without loosing the most of the following week.

>I noted their were comments about people not arriving until Friday or
>not being able to reach LV until Friday. I see this as no different
>from those of us that may have to leave early (like on Sunday!)

>It seemed from last year that there were quite a few in LV on the
>Thursday, either hangovers from N+I or just early arrivers.

>I would suggest that DLV has a program that runs from Thursday through
>Tuesday with the "core" bits on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and perhaps
>Monday.

This is what things seem to be converging on by concensus ...

>It obvious from the comments that the Monday and Tuesday last
>year were "hard" work for some people.

Personally, I was exhausted, physically, on Monday, having spent quite
a bit of time on my feet the week before at N+I, and burning the candle
at both ends on the weekend. I know others were tired as well.

>My suggested program might be something like this:

>Thursday Evening : Drinks / Dinner? / Show

I see a show as a possibility this evening, but we want to be sure we
keep the major show-goings for the days of maximum participation.

>Friday AM :
> PM :
> Evening : "Traditional" GoodTimes Intro

>Saturday AM :
> PM :
> Evening : Show - See below

>Sunday AM :
> PM :
> Evening : Show - See below

>Monday AM :
> PM :
> Evening : Show - See below

>1. Group dinner (theme night?)

>Seems to me we can do this more than once - like maybe groups can book
>and go out to restaurants before or after a show.

Only tricky part of doing this is allowing ample time. Speaking from
experience, having the dinner after the show seems to work best. If the
show comes after the dinner, it seems that no matter how much time is
allowed, things get tight, and people have to finish eating in a hurry.

>2. Hospitality/meeting room.

>I'm not personally interested in this

This was the Hot Topic Du Jour a few months back, and we do have
somebody checking into it. We haven't heard much discussion lately. Is
this still a priority item for some?

>3. Thrift shop tour.

>I'm not personally interested in this

I think this and a number of other suggestions will have to be acted
upon if it appears there will be a demand as the date approaches.

>4. Legacy LV show (Splash, Follies).

>I'm not sure what shows are on at the moment but some that I have seen
>and liked include:

>Lord of the Dance
>EFX
>Splash
>Follies

>La Cage (Frank Marino)
>Kenny Kerr

All of them are still playing. EFX is quite pricey, and will have yet
another change of headliners as soon as Tommy Tune's new engagement in
NYC opens. The rest are more moderately priced.

Imao, Splash or Follies would be a good one for the group.

>As I sad sometime earlier one of us needs to find out a list of shows
>and then everyone can simply vote and we choose the two / three top
>choices and select and evening for each. (Does anybody know if there's
>one site where we can get a list of all the current shows???)

There are more lists of LV shows than there are shows!

There's a good meta-list of LV show lists at:

http://www.in-vegas.com/shows.htm

This gives links of most of the common show lists as well as links to
the shows that have individual pages. Some of these are quite up to
date, but others still list such things as shows at the Continental
and Michael Crawford headlining for EFX. :)

>Because of the nature of DLV I think one of Kenny Kerr or Frank Marino
>would be appropriate and I've found both shows to be pretty good.

I agree. If we have to choose one of the two, it appears that Kenny
Kerr was the better-liked of the two for both 1998 and 1999, both as
far as the show itself, and the venue. (In 1997, we only saw Frank M.)

Comments on shows, gang?

>5. Behind-the-scenes Follies tour.

>This would probably be really fun!!! Lots of Photo opportunities?

Somebody was going to look into this. Anything yet?

>6. Concert at Hard Rock.

>This would be great

When the Hard Rock schedule is known for the DLV times, we can discuss
it further and decide. This may not be until March or so.

Mandalay Bay (two venues) has been doing rock/pop/blues concerts, and
a number of places do occasional 50's/60's concerts as well.

>7. Trip to Rhyolite.

>I'd be keen on this, depending on which day it was on. My intentions
>while in Las Vegas were to actually go out to several local places
>including Grand Canyon, Death Valley and Valley of Fire. I have been to
>all of them in the past but they provide such good photo opportunities.
>I know some of them are actually multi-hour, long drives but I'll try
>and do it anyway

Valley of Fire is not too far. Death Valley and Grand Canyon would be
all-day things. Rhyolite would most likely take most of the morning and
afternoon.

>8. Rocky Horror Picture Show.

>I'm not personally interested in this

.... YET! <vbfg>

>9. Makeovers, etc. (early, Fri. or Sat. Aft.)

>I'm not personally interested in this

I think the prior suggestion to do this Friday or Saturday afternoon
is best.

>10. Shopping Trip

>A group shopping trip to the factory shops, mall or where ever probably
>needs to be added to the itinerary.

We have the two mainline malls (we visited the Boulevard Mall last
year), plus the two outlet malls (we visited Belz in 1998 and 1999) in
the area. There are also two tres touristy malls on the Strip.

Two other options are a somewhat new factory outlet in Primm
(Stateline), about 1/2 hour away, or a HUGE outlet complex with
hundreds of shops just outside Barstow, California, about three hours
away. If there's a demand for one of these other places, I'm sure a
trip can be arranged.

>11. What about golf?

>Anyone interested in a ladies day out on an Las Vegas golf course?

Personally, no, but I know that some others in the DLV crowd are
golfers and they may be interested.

Comments on a golf outing?

>One other thing that is probably worth noting from my perspective is
>that in general money is not an issue. I realise that this may not be
>the case for everyone wishing to attend DLV however even if the lowest
>cost options were chosen it still amounts to a sizeable amount for
>attending two or three things for three or four days on end.

Our people come from all kinds of backgrounds, and all income classes.
We've always tried to be considerate of those on tight budgets by
promoting things that are not too outlandish. If you run the numbers,
you will see that DLV is more affordable than most of the mainline
t* events. Most of the people in the States can do DLV for under $500
per person (including airfare) and still have a very good time.

I'd like to keep DLV concentrated around modest activities. If people
want to go on their own to a hoity-toity shop or restaurant, or more
elaborate show, they can feel free to do that on their own, as some did
last year. I don't wanna see anybody left out of any of the official
DLV functions because of $$$$.

If you compare food and hotel prices of Las Vegas to those of other
US cities of the same size, you will find that prices in LV are almost
always lower, being subsidized by the gaming industry as loss-leaders
to get people to play at the tables and machines.

So far we haven't had anybody go overboard at the tables. That is one
area where $$$ can disappear quite rapidly. Last year I found that I
really didn't have much time for gaming. I played a bit some evenings,
and on the strip tour, but there just wasn't time. :)

Siegfried and Roy:

>I hear Siegfried & Roy are closing their show? How about seeing that
>before it closes?

I've heard rumors that they have said they will not seek renewal of the
contract for their show in its current form, with the contract running
out in 2001 or 2002, iirc.

However, this is a very expensive show, approaching $100 per person.

A few of our people saw this last year. I would suggest that if you or
anybody wants to see it, go for it.
