Org List:
This is the DLV 2016 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Things in the immediate future:
It is the last Wednesday of November, and our hotels are "due out"
at the end of the month.
Beverly is in communication with the CET folks regarding possible
promotional rates. Nothing is in black and white now, but rates,
overall, appear to be better than they were this past year, pointing to
a more affordable event for all!
Unless someone says "stop" and calls for a vote, we'll announce the
slate of proposed hotels noted last week (Flamingo, Paris, 4-Queens) as
the Suggested Hotels for DLV 2016. If we receive a motion and a second
for a vote by November 30, we'll call for a vote. If not, we'll announce
the suggested hotels on December 1.
Speak now or forever ... :)
. . . . . . . . . .
Heads up!
Beginning with the next ORG mailing (next Wednesday), we'll start using
the new address of dlvorg_at_divalas.vegas to sent out the mailings. If you
use some kind of a mail filtering program, please be sure that
"dlvorg_at_divalas.vegas" and "dlv_at_divalas.vegas" are on your white list.
Even though we'll be phasing in the new domain, all existing e-mail
addresses will continue to work for the immediate and long-term future.
. . . . .
Big thanks to all who have helped to shake down the new divalas.vegas
web site.
The process is moving along smoothly and is actually ahead of schedule,
if there is indeed a schedule. :)
The plan is (still) to "cut" the main web site and the e-mail to the new
domain as of the first of the year. MyDLV and the various dynamic web
pages and such that DLV 2016 will be dependent upon will be moved to the
new domain following the conclusion of the DLV 2016 event.
A related project is to replace the dated and inconsistent themes on the
DLV 1998 to 2011 follow-up pages with the "gendex" method and "Tara"
theme which has been used on the 2012 and later follow-up pages. This
will also track the times viewed of each image and allow comments on the
photos.
As of this writing years 2004 through 2011 have been converted and can
be viewed via the http://divalas.vegas site or the existing site on
geekbabe.com.
Big thanks to our Proofread Team for putting the new web projects
through their paces! :)

Event strategy:
Delaney writes:
Strategy A.
Had there been concerns just for this year due to Easter, I would have
said move the opening to Tuesday, but it did not appear to be an issue
except for one or two individuals.

I favor this schedule due to the Sunday holiday

Cami writes:
Hi all
I wanted to give my opinion on the weekly schedule.
Although you can make a case for any one of them depending on your
individual requirements, I would vote for the schedule to be the same
one we've used in the past years with a Monday opening - and a Friday
closing bash.
Although I realize sunday is Easter, how many of those that plan on
attending would not travel on Easter anyway? We aren't talking that many
and therefore it should not be a reason to change from Monday.
By the time it rolls around people are biting at the bullet to go
anyway.
. . . . .
Aleta writes:
I am fine with the latter proposal of placing the large gatherings in
closer to the middle of the week. I think we can include more people
that way. Some cannot afford the higher hotel rates, I want as many
people as possible to be able to attend. I am fine with the larger
events placed close together, to me, a meal is a meal.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
Please correct me if I am wrong here. There appears to be a slight but
noted preference toward holding the major gatherings on the Monday and
Friday of the week.
We are not under the gun for a decision as of this time, but we do need
to move forward toward one.
Let's steer this conversation toward naming any particular reasons why
we should not plan for a strategy which has the major gatherings on
Friday and Monday.
Comments along that line, please.
. . . . .
JoAnn responds:
I see no reason against "sooner that later" so Monday, I say, we start
things off. So I will listen to hear a redeeming feature to start
Tuesday.
As to Friday as the ending date.... later is usually more costly.
Again no redeeming feature other than Friday.

Hotels:
Delaney writes:
I'm good with the hotels, do you happen to know what our past volume has
been at Paris?
If it is more than a handful (I recall it as small), perhaps [Paris]
would do a combined price break with Flamingo. No, I'm not trying to
make even more work for Bev - if only a few book there, I would think it
moot.
. . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
The volume at Paris has always been in the "handful" range.
I would say that if Beverly can get us a deal at Paris, all the better,
as long as it does not reduce the level of discount we get at the
Flamingo.
In my not so humble opinion, the need for a price break is far greater
on the lower end of the scale. To put it bluntly, those who can afford
to stay at Paris don't need a price break nearly as much as those who
can only marginally afford to stay at the Flamingo. I would prefer to
put as much of the "price break energy" as we can toward the lower end
of the scale to make things more affordable to more people.
For those who have been following hotel rates, they are lower than they
were last year and if my crystal ball was working I would say that they
will continue to drop.
. . . . .
JoAnn responds:
The "3" (Flamingo, Paris, 4Q) are a go for me.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Big Sisters:
Delaney writes:
So far as the Bigs, every year we run tight, and we depend on Bigs year
over year, whereas most girls are Littles only once or twice.
If not badges, then a fresh rose, or a giant hershey bar, something. I
realize that no one is going to volunteer to get a three dollar rose,
but I think some sort of thank you would be beneficial.
Other than at the opening registration desk, I'm not sure where we could
have a chance to catch everyone.
. . . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
"Every year we run tight" indicates to me that we do need incentives for
volunteering as a Big Sister. I've been trying to think of just what the
incentives would need to be in order to inspire those who are "on the
edge" of volunteering to do so.
JoAnn's remark "Give me a drink ticket!" might help. A drink, whether
potent or benign, is always appreciated.
I'm also questioning my long-standing aversion to anything that might
become a status symbol. Maybe some status is what is needed. I've always
pushed back on specially-designated name tags, but this might be the
case for them.
Having people with "Big Sister" name tags might be a Good Thing and
identify those that someone can go to for answers or assistance.
One other item which we rejected a while back but can always reconsider
is to extend voting status within the ORG group to the Big Sisters, as
we do with the activity coordinators. This would take a vote of the gang
here to make it happen.
. . . . .
JoAnn responds:
The "Big Sister" on the name tag would be a go test for the
volunteerism.

High Tea:
Vanessa writes:
I will check out those alternative venues for the High Tea..... we have
ended up with a private room at the Four Seasons that is more conducive
to conversation during the tea. I will report back.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks, Vanessa. Please keep us in the loop. :)

Bare Minerals appointments:
Dionne writes:

Yes, I would be in contact with the store and close the loop. I will
check appt with the stores bookings. Hope this helps.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks, Dionne. We'll continue with the details as activity sign-up
time approaches.

Survey deeper dive:
Dionne writes:
> What is your approximate age?
> Which of the following best describes your current financial
> situation?
Do you have any correlation stats between these datasets?
Are the 23 Stable middle class in the age group of ?? The 45 and under
group is what we need to attract. Are they mostly in the challenged
group? Could it be possible this younger group is priced out of
attending? Pondering some possibilities here.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
There's a slight relation between age and income level, but it's "noisy"
and seems to resemble more of a "shallow bathtub" than a straight line.
Those on both ends of the scale are the ones who appear to be slightly
older.
Upper middle class or higher Age: 59
Comfortable middle class Age: 58
Stable middle class. Age: 52
Middle class, challenged financially Age: 62
Paycheck to paycheck Age: 65
Now, if we break out and look only at the 11 individuals who are in the
45 and under range, we get the following breakdown:
Upper middle class or higher: 1
Comfortable middle class: 2
Stable middle class: 8
Middle class, challenged financially: 0
Paycheck to paycheck: 0
Poverty level or below: 0
In the age range that you're interested in, the respondents skew
somewhat higher on the income scale than the population as a whole.
It's been my observation, over the past several decades, that those who
are younger and travel to TG events make up the very tip of the tip of
the iceberg, financially speaking, for that age range.
Of those I know personally in the TG community who are 40-ish or
younger, VERY few can afford to travel cross country to an event such
as DLV.
Yes, I would say that for the 40-ish and under crowd, all but those in
the top few percentage points are priced out of attending. I'm sure that
the 11 respondents in that age range are indeed in that top few percent.
