This is the DLV 2016 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)

Where we stand:
Our dates are now final. Monday, March 28 - Saturday, April 2, for
better or for worse.
We're still in the strategic phase of our planning cycle, and one of the
jobs we face is to formulate a daily strategy that deals effectively
with our nonstandard (since 2010) span of weekdays this year.
Please see the discussion below. Comments are encouraged.
. . . . .
We have several comments regarding details of activities. Please
continue to make your opinions known, as our volunteer group is highly
representative of our attendee base in general.
We do have one very firmly established precedent, and that is that the
details of our activities, such as venue selection, type of vehicles to
be used, entertainment to be used, timing, etc., are decided upon by
those who volunteer to coordinate those activities.
If you feel very strongly regarding the details of any activity, please
step forward to volunteer to help make that activity happen in the way
you wish it to.

Survey and check splitting:
Annie writes:
Our Dining and Lodging Survey has been out for four days and already we
have over 50 responses! It has a bit more than two weeks to run.
If you have not taken this survey, please do so. It's on line here:
http://www.geekbabe.com/cgi-bin/dlv/cssurv15.cgi
One of the featured topics on the survey is that of check splitting. In
light of this very "hot button" issue, reported multiple times on our
post-event survey, I took the opportunity to discreetly observe the
actions and reactions of individuals during the check-presentation phase
of dining at last week's Pinkfest. I was very careful to say almost
nothing regarding check splitting to the Pinkfest gang.
I realize that Pinkfest is not DLV, so it's not a true "apples to
apples" comparison, but more of a "tangerines to oranges" comparison. :)
Both events have the TG community as the attendee base and a significant
cross-over in terms of individual attendees.
We had a very good mix of larger groups and smaller groups dining at a
variety of places, some of which did separate checks and some who did
one check per table per policy.
In one situation (Giordano's), the server, who had identified me as the
HBIC for the evening, asked me if we would like separate or combined
checks. This was for a table of 10-12. I told her that separate checks
were preferred and she remarked that it was just as easy (using the
system they had) to do them either way.
I watched her prepare the checks. She took the pad on which she wrote
the original orders to the workstation and simply punched in the menu
selections for each person, one at a time, and the machine spit out the
check to be paid. I estimated that it was roughly the same number of
keystrokes to do it either way.
I tried to watch the nonverbals and the actions when a shared check was
presented. In two cases, one individual almost immediately grabbed the
check and pulled out the calculator. I didn't see any serious griping,
let alone any non-ladylike behavior.
It will be very interesting to see the results of the survey in a couple
of weeks.

EHM Clarification:

I also asked about the Puppet (penis) show (potential impact to
availability). Here's her reply;
"PS - the puppets show is still on-going."
Sorry my comment wasn't detailed enough. I was thinking about logistics,
not show ideas. You may recall the construction happening during the EHM
luncheon at DLV 2015. The crew was building out the stage & etc. for this
distasteful (IMHO) show. When I spoke with EHM staff, they estimated this
show wouldn't last long at all. The show had strong financial backing so
the production moved forward. The logistics are that this show occupied a
large portion of what was their cafe'. That's why we were eating lunch off
to the side of the lobby, not in their cafe'. My hope was this show had
died like it was supposed to and their cafe' was available to plan our
DLV2016 EHM event.
PS - I don't watch Family Guy, either.

Limo comments:
Ginger writes:
Not to be catty, but a bus ride is not a limo event.
The limo event is made even more special realizing all of the effort
that this event takes, selling tickets, putting the groups in the limos,
planning the trip for the water shows, etc. I actually ride buses a lot
and my family makes fun of me for it and buses are for basic
transportation, in no way offering the entertainment value of the limo
including sharing my favorite drink with special friends who are almost
family and who I only see occasionally!
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
I hear you. IMAO, a bus, even a tricked-out "Party Bus" lacks the class
and the intimacy of the long black (or pink) :) car. :)
There is something about the dynamics of the interaction, with a small
group while riding, with the larger group when stopped, that makes the
Limo Tour fun and interesting.
I, personally, would not be opposed to trying one "Party Bus" as an
option for the Limo Tour for those who specifically want it. One item
cited was that some have difficulty getting into and out of a lower
vehicle. I do, however, want that "long black car" to be an option as
well, should we go with a Party Bus.
The bottom line, however, it that it will be those who volunteer to do
the organization of the Limo Tour to decide upon the vehicle type. Of
course, comments do reflect the desires of those who would be the
"customers" of the Limo Tour.

Major gathering timing:
Marisa writes:
Because of Sunday being a holiday, there has been some talk of DLVers
traveling on Monday. With flight delays, traffic, getting checked in, getting
ready, etc....., the WC may not be such a "BIG BASH" on Monday!
Wouldn't Tuesday be more relaxed and be a better turn out for the big
bash?
. . . . . . . . . .
JoAnn responds:
Shifting --- Having Tuesday as the start--- "a la Big Bash"....
My take would see having 2 days [Sunday & Monday] as pre-week activities
before the "opening activity" really a delay of a Diva Week start.
Everyone has their own definition of a "Big Bash". I look at Monday as
the start of "The Week" that should not be delayed. This may seem
wordsmithing, but perception is what it is all about.
So Sunday is a travel day, and Monday may be a travel day. If one
travels Monday, just understand and plan your hotel check-in needs to
be a 4pm Monday target and you will make the evening's activities. Why
relax if you arrive on Monday.... just get on with the program and not
waste the fun of a Monday evening.

Dancing At {whatever}:
Marisa writes:
The DAP nightly is very dependable place to meet at, but a possible
option to try is The Bourbon Room at Venetian. They play lots of crazy
80's rock videos on real big screens. The waitress's put on a stag show
at times also and they currently have $7 special drinks along with the
more pricey.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
It appears that there's enough of a desire to have varied late-night
dancing locations that it's bound to happen.
I do want the first "Big One" to be in a known and comfortable venue,
so I will volunteer to coordinate the Dancing At Paris session which
follows our first major gathering, on whatever night it happens.

Limo and Dancing:
Cami writes:
I have a couple comments to make.
I agree that a limo bus would be a lot better and more fun and give
everyone an opportunity to be together.
I think that weekend schedule a different place to go for dancing at
least one night and I would be happy to coordinate that. I know of a
couple spots already.
I am also planning an afternoon event at the carousel court that will
tie into going out to dinner.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks, Cami.
Please feel free to volunteer to host(ess) one or more Late Night
Dancing sessions at the venues of your choice.
I'm assuming you mean Carnaval Court at Harrah's/Linq. That, combined
with a dining activity, could work very well with a "non-dining Welcome
Celebration" at one of the Linq venues.
