Decisions to make:

Our most important pending decision as of this time is the venue for our
closing gathering. We now have two visited-in-person venues which look
very promising (see item immediately below) one "back burner" option,
and a few that could be warmed up if none of the preferred ones are
viable.

Right now we need comments and feedback on the options. In particular,
if anyone sees any significant negatives, we need to know those now and
not after the trigger is pulled!

Fortunately we're well-covered as far as volunteers for our closing
gathering go, so nobody's gonna get jumped on to volunteer for giving
us comments and feedback! :)
. . . . .

Another very important item is the filling-in and rounding-out of our
schedule. In particular, we have a few very weak spots that are in need
of mostly smaller, easy to organize, informal activities.

Most of the activities that are needed should be very easy to organize
and coordinate. Many of them require little more effort than simply
naming a venue and agreeing to be there.

So for those of you who have volunteered and are not yet signed up to
coordinate an activity (you know who you are, and we do too) :) this is
your cue to step forward. :)
. . . . .

Timing:

We are now in the final week of January. We have seven full weeks to
our big event and four full weeks until activity sign-up starts.

We would like to have the activity sign-up screen done and ready to
test on Wednesday, February 25.

Typically we see a "rush" just before activity sign-up starts and that
makes the process vulnerable to errors. Let's please do all we can this
year to get any activities which need a sign-up solid before crunch
time.
. . . . .

We ask all to please read the item on expanding circles of friendship
below and please comment. This was elicited by two independent but very
similar off-line comments by two individuals who were definitely feeling
left out and fortunately chose to bring it to our attention.
. . . . .

On a totally different subject, the dates of Wednesday, October 14 thru
Sunday, October 18, are being proposed for Pinkfest 2015 in Chicago.

There's also movement toward organizing a very nice and affordable
lodging option which is right in the heart of the action.

http://www.geekbabe.com/pinkfest and/or pinkfest@geekbabe.com if you are
interested.

Venue for closing gathering:

This item discusses the one specific venue. More comments on the closing
gathering appear in an item below.

Comments on this option are encouraged.
. . . . .

Cami writes:

So I went and saw the possible venue at Margaritaville. I think it would
be an excellent place to have the party.

Plenty of room, privacy, separate bathrooms, nice balcony and views.

She is holding the space for us until we decide but we should try to
move on this as soon as possible. I would suggest that we try to move on
this within the next week with a plan to offer the two entree buffet at
$32 plus plus.
. . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

Thanks for checking this out, Cami!

To all: Is this the way we want to go? Are there other viable options
to be considered?

To all, The photos that Cami sent in appear on line here:

Margaritaville:
http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dlv2015/mville/

Please take a look at them.

Thanks again to Cami for taking the lead on this one! It is appreciated!

An aside to Cami, the Big Wheel appears to be on track for Thursday, as
originally planned, with an accompanying dining option.

Comments please! :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Laundry list:

Shorter this week. Thanks to those who made it so!
. . . . .

All: We are in need of volunteers for a few sessions of the following:

Afternoon Social: Thursday, Friday.

Dancing at Paris: Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday.

No busy work! All you have to do is to agree to be there on your
designated day/night, welcome the others, and keep an eye on things.

The daily lunch on Sunday and Wednesday could very easily become "Lunch
With YOU" if you so desire! :)
. . . . .

Metropolitan Community Church on Sunday: Going twice!

This is a fairly low-maintenance one. All that needs to be done is to
verify the service time(s), select a service to attend, and be there to
welcome the others.
. . . . .

Valorie? Pole Dancing? Any movement on this?
. . . . .

Cami? Any decision on your dining activity for Wednesday?
. . . . .

Shiloh Horse Rescue? Looks like there is interest, but so far no
volunteer to make it happen. Volunteers?
. . . . .

Thanks in advance for your responses!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Schedule review:

In addition to this review, we're asking all to please look over the
working schedule at the bottom of this mailing. Please be on the lookout
for such things as missing activities and activities in the wrong
timeslots.

Not all activities are listed here in this item. This item concentrates
entirely on weak spots and timeslots which have room for additional
activities.

Sunday, March 22:

Sunday afternoon is wide open! Shopping at places such as Premium
Outlets would work well here, prior to the downtown evening activities.

For Sunday evening we need at least one more HH/dinner option. These can
be downtown or elsewhere. Grotto? Tony Roma's? Oscar's? Triple George?
(D Snack Bar?) You can be minimalist or fancy here.
. . . . .

Monday, March 23:

Monday morning is wide open. Something like shopping, something touristy
or outdoorsy, etc., would fit nicely. Shiloh Horse Rescue?
. . . . .

Tuesday, March 24:

** Tuesday is, unfortunately, one of our overall weaker days!

Tuesday morning has golf, but that will not attract everyone. Shiloh
Horse Rescue would be a good fit here. Some kind of a shopping or
touristy thing would work well here as well.

We will need at least one more HH/dinner option on Tuesday. We most
definitely need something on the lower end of the price range! Maybe
a buffet or coffee shop in the center Strip area. Food court maybe?
(White Castle? - Hey, it has its fans!) :)

** Tuesday evening is one of our major weak spots at this time!

We will need at least two after-dinner activities of about any type on
Tuesday. Audrey Tour? Comedy show? Ideas?
. . . . .

Wednesday, March 25:

Wednesday morning is also wide open. Something like shopping, something
touristy or outdoorsy, etc., would fit nicely. Shiloh Horse Rescue?

Wednesday afternoon and evening are looking good. Two strong dining
options and two strong after-dinner activities.
. . . . .

Thursday, March 26:

Thursday morning has shooting, but there is room for something else
in there as well.

For Thursday evening it appears that the High Roller will be happening,
along with a Pre-Wheel dining option. That gives us two very strong
choices for dining plus one very strong evening activity in the High
Roller.

There is definitely room for a second-track option against the High
Roller, such as a show, "Audrey Tour" type of thing, etc.
. . . . .

Friday, March 27:

It appears that there's enough interest in FISM to say that it will be
happening, but it's still "orphan" without an official Coordinator.

With the recent movement on our final evening, we can say that Friday
is now looking good.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Expanding circles of friends:

Annie writes:

I would like to open up this particular topic for discussion.

I'm not looking for magic-bullet answers. My purpose is mainly to raise
the sense of awareness of this issue, prior to our event in March.

I would like to make it known that we do have people who are feeling
left out, and those who find certain common patterns to be annoying.

I would hope that we can get the majority of our people on the same page
WRT realizing what is going on and making a conscientious effort to be
sure we do all we can to avoid falling back into certain patterns of
behavior.

I would like to share with you two items I've received, both of them
being from individuals I know from DLV and whose opinions I value.

One was received some time ago, the other quite recently.

I should point out that neither of these two individuals were newcomers
at our last event. Both of the individuals are on the ORG list, and they
are free to identify themselves if they wish.

I've edited somewhat and formatted for clarity.
. . . . . . . . . .

+You have a two-class system at Diva.

+One class is the girls who have groups of friends, and they make
+it clear that the rest of us are not part of their group.

+The other class is the rest of us. At major events we're not
+allowed to sit at their tables or even chat with them except
+for a few minutes until they move on. ...

+I don't know why I'm crying on your shoulder but I know I'm not
+the only one feeling left out and you if anyone are the one who
+knows what to do about it. ...

+So I'm standing there talking to a couple of girls and I think
+we're all getting along fine and then another girl who they know
+walks in and they just up and leave me standing there and they
+won't say boo to me the rest of the night. ...

+I know there are private events. Those that are invited
+make it clear they go on and the rest of us are not invited.
+Look at the pictures on the web. Several did not happen at
+official Diva events but at private events.
. . . . . . . . . .

+The last few years have seemed very cliquish to me.

+Even at the opening and closing events, the same people gather
+round each other. ...

+I made it a point to circulate at Carmine's last year from table
+to table. No one seemed interested in including me in their
+conversations.

+Part of that may have been the layout and noise factor of the
+venue itself. It was not at all suited to socialization.
. . . . . . . . . .

I responded to both in private and I'll summarize here.

First of all, I hear you, loud and clear!

I've always thought (and still do) that the DLV group is far much easier
to "break into" than are the groups at other major TG events and many TG
groups.

It's my observation, and that of others as well, that the TG community,
speaking in gross generalizations, tends to be class and status
conscious and can be very cliquish.

This can be observed in most every TG organization. I've observed it at
times within the DLV group and I have tried to push back against it
(very hard at times) when I could.

We did not get gigged for this on the survey this past year, but it has
been noticed by multiple people.

Although the "derogs" on the "Do you find the others to be friendly and
inclusive?" question on the survey are usually down in the low single
digits, there's an underlying "rest of the story" here.

My personal peeve is that many of the cliques who go off and do things
on their own during DLV are very reluctant to expand their circles and
include others, particularly those who are new and those who are
climbing the learning curve.
. . . . .

For the past few years, I've been watching in particular for two
patterns. One is someone sitting or standing alone looking unhappy. I
did not see this last year.

The other is groups, cliques, sitting together giving off "closed" body
language signals. I did not notice this in 2014, but I sure did at the
Hard Rock Happy Hour in 2013. Fortunately, when dinner seating started,
that group joined the others and socialized with the group.

(Said to both, almost the same words ...) My hunch is that nobody was
being intentionally rude to you, just that they were so involved in
their conversations with their BFFs that they did not have the
"bandwidth" at the moment to include anyone else.
. . . . .

I don't know what we can do to counteract the tendency to be cliquish,
but I think we can raise the level of awareness of it amongst the
organizers and let them know that it has been obvious, that some are
feeling left out (not just the shy newbees) and that some find it to be
annoying.

Now, as for private or "closed" activities, I can assure you that there
are no officially-acknowledged items which are not open to the DLV
attendee base as a whole! I know that these have occurred at other
events, but they have not and will not happen at DLV! We simply have no
place for such things as invitation-only or faux-exclusive activities.

Now there are some groups, informal and formal, which do plan things on
their own and we really can't do anything about it. I would go as far as
to say that most of these goings-on are desirable and healthy. I think
it's quite cool that DLVers have established close friendships and have
gained the confidence to go out and do things on their own. (If they
would only be a wee bit more inclusive!)

The Southern Belle Society, for example, was present for a number of
years at DLV, and invited the entire DLV gang to their functions. On the
other hand, the Boudoir gang did not and kept quite a closed circle.

In the past when we've discussed inclusion there have been suggestions
of "mixing games", and I admit these often sounded trite and cheesy. I
am all in favor of such things if we really believe that they would
truly help in getting people to more effectively get to know one-another
better.

I want to start some dialog on the issue.

Over. :)

Closing evening:

Sara (no "h") writes:

I want to add a comment about booking a restaurant for a larger DLV
group, specifically aimed at the Margaritaville option.

PF Chang's has been a recurring event over the last several years. It
seems that every year I've had to reinvent the wheel to a certain extent
with respect to dealing with new management. I open the discussion by
sending them an email chain from the previous year in which there is a
description of what our group is all about and the terms of the previous
dinners. Regardless, it seems I always receive a reply along the lines
of "you are booked, which buffet do you want?" to which I always respond
with something similar to the following (this is the part that might be
of assistance...)

1) DLV has a rich history which has shown repeatedly that set menus and
expensive buffets for our main events tend to be attended very poorly.
Doing so for the proposed dinner would make it a non-starter.

2) Annie's comment about the bar business is certainly helpful.

3) If in doubt, see #1.

Seriously, the venue needs to decide if an open menu and some serious
bar activity is worth their time.

The math is simple, even a conservative $20 per person times 100 of us
is two grand for the venue and many of us will spend much more than that
(I'd guess the average is more like $30-50 per person). As such, PF
Chang's has always seen it this way and we have avoided the
set-menu/buffet that is usually mandated for a group of our size.

A final note. One thing I have made clear to PF Chang's which seems to
be a similar vibe to what we experience at Bahama Breeze is that there
is no expectation that the entire group eat all at once.

Many times a restaurant pushes the set menu thing because of the
logistics of having 100 meals come out of their kitchen at the same
time. Our group is generally patient and should be reminded to remain so
when it comes to the timing of food in situations such as this. If we
are able to find a venue willing to accommodate us on our terms, a
little patience goes a very long way.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

I agree with a number of points here.

Venue managers tend to think inside the box, particularly when it comes
to larger groups. They are used to captive audiences, single seatings
and servings, and limited choices.

Twice now I've found that the following statement had successfully
caused venue management types to "get it" and break out of their box of
fixed menus, single seatings, and such. "Our people do not want a
banquet, they want a nice meal in a nice restaurant. Please don't think
of us as one big catering customer, but as 80-some dining customers,
like you would get on an otherwise good evening."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Afternoon Social:

Katie writes:

Afternoon social at Chaio @ The linq.

I can only do Wednesday. The other 3 days are not workable for me so if
we are to have a 5:PM daily social then we will need hostesses for
Tuesday, Thursday. and Friday.

This will be an easy one for anyone interested in hostessing a DLV event
for the first time. All they have to do is be there one night at 5PM.
for 1 hour or less either Tues, Thurs or Fri. .... What's the worst that
could happen? Have a drink of two before everyone else gets started
and get to meet a few nice people in the process and then have the honor
of being an official Diva Las Vegas event coordinator to boot! Sorry
about the inconvenience but Wednesday is all I can do.
. . . . . . . . . .

Let's put the Afternoon Social back on for Wednesday, as the dinner
timing is not solid and there will probably be some who would enjoy the
Social.

We still are in need of host(esse)s for the remaining afternoons.

Bare Minerals MU sign-ups:

Dionne writes:

> These will give priority on the list to those who have a

For DLV 2014 there were too many no-shows without contact info. The store
brought on extra staff to accommodate us for the DLV sessions and will do
so again last year. Some MU artists were standing around without clients.

This had to be frustrating for them. Could a valid mobile# be required
for sign-ups? The clear no-show history should be mandatory, too.
. . . . . . . . . .

Yes, we've locked it down to those criteria. We'll also put a note in
that they may expect a phone call confirming participation.

I did apologize to the staff (WRT no-shows) when I stopped in there last
year, and they assured me it was NBD, but I know it has to be very
annoying and frustrating to have staff on hand without the expected
business.

Icebreaker HH:

I welcome your help and experience, as a
team approach works best.

> How about calling it --- "The Hounds and Hare" event.

I will admit it took a long time staring at this name/ concept for me to
get-it. KIS comes to my mind, as the way to make it appeal to more
DLV'rs. The Happy Hour/ cocktail party conversation starter seems to be
right along with the Monday/ Friday timeframe.

Maybe if we are going to have badges like last year, these would be
checkboxes when accomplished. The icebreaker phrase is what did you
check off your list, today?

I appreciate your help and insights.

Sunday Karaoke dinner:

Linda writes:

Regarding your question to me "Are you planning for any kind of
Pre-Karaoke HH and/or dinner this year?", my answer at this time is:

Since only 1 or 2 of the 15 who attended the Blue Ox dinner last year
also attended karaoke (most just went to their hotel rooms to sleep), it
seems that Blue Ox and Phoenix don't go together very well, except in
proximity.

Originally, about 5 had planned on karaoke, but decided they were too
tired after eating.

Therefore, I think this year I will just attend one of the downtown
dinners -- probably Dennys, as it seems the safer choice (healthwise)
after reading some of the recent Yelp reviews of the Brass Lounge. If I
can help out on this in any way, please let me know.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

If you don't think the Blue Ox will work well, then it's probably best
if we leave it out of the Sunday evening lineup.

We still have one unanswered burning question. "Do we need a safer
dining option for Sunday evening?"

I don't know, I'm asking. :) Comments? :)

Whether or not we have a designated "safe" dining option on Sunday, we
are still in need of at least one additional dining (and HH) option, as
the two we have cannot easily handle the number we expect. If you
(Linda) could help out with one, it would be appreciated. If not, we'll
definitely need somebody else to step in.

We have Denny's and Brass Lounge currently on the slate. There are
several other in the downtown area (Triple George, Tony Roma's, Oscar's
and Grotto are some we've used) and countless other options both
downtown and elsewhere.

Sunday evening is one timeslot in which we need some more options, and
one need is for some volunteers to make these options happen.
