Org List:
This is the DLV 2015 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Moving forward:
Another fairly long mailing. Yes, a lot is happening! Please look over
this mailing carefully and if your name is called, please get back to us
with the needed information.
This list covers all topics except for the final gathering. A special
mailing on this topic only will be sent out shortly.
. . . . .
We have 9 1/2 weeks until show time, 6 1/2 weeks until activity sign-up
needs to be solid.
First of all, big thanks to those who have volunteered to coordinate
additional activities. For the most part, our schedule is rounding out
very nicely!
We are now approaching our peak in activity regarding the planning for
our event. We ask all to please watch inboxes and be responsive over the
next few weeks. Mailings prior to the normal schedule may need to be
made if there are any time-sensitive items.
I (Annie) would like to apologize in advance on behalf of the PM team
if we appear to be getting more and more assertive and even hard line
regarding a few items. Over the next 6 weeks we need to focus, strongly,
on what needs to be done to make our event a success.
. . . . .
If you are a new(er) volunteer, or a volunteer who is not yet on the
schedule as coordinating an activity, this is your cue. There are many
items below for which we need volunteers. Now is the time to step
forward. If you want to do something but don't know what, let us know
and we'll suggest something that would be a good fit for you.
. . . . .
We've had some reports of some items falling through the cracks over the
holiday break. If we're missing anything that needs to be attended to,
please let us know before we get into a crunch.
. . . . .
Vera and Dennis are reporting that the process of including the QR codes
on the reverse side of the name tags is moving along and will definitely
be happening. Again, big thanks to Vera and Dennis for doing our name
tags again this year.
. . . . .
As of Tuesday morning our total headcount is 92, which includes 15 SOs.
We are now right about at the point we were last year at this time.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Laundry list:
For those who are new, this is a recurring list of items which need
short term attention, such as things which are unanswered, uncertain
un-done, etc.
If your name is called in this section of the list, either personally
or in more general terms, we ask you to please respond ASAP and at least
give us an update on where things stand. An answer such as "I will let
you know as soon as I can" is much better than no answer, please.
. . . . . . . . . .
Afternoon Social Coordinators: Is Chayo at the Linq definitely going to
be the venue? Please update/confirm on this.
. . . . .
All: We are in need of volunteers for all session of Dancing at Paris
each evening. This is an easy one and particularly good for newer
volunteers. No busy work! All you have to do is to agree to be there on
your designated night, welcome the others, and keep an eye on things.
This is a very easy path to voting status.
. . . . .
Metropolitan Community Church on Sunday: If this is to go on the
schedule, we will need a volunteer Coordinator. This is a fairly
low-maintenance one. What needs to be done is to verify the service
time(s), select a service to attend, and be there to welcome the others.
. . . . .
Big Wheel: Holly? Any movement on this? Will this be happening? We
really need a report on this, since a number of other things are
interdependent on it!
. . . . .
Vanessa? High Tea? Will you be taking this one?
. . . . .
Valorie? Pole Dancing? Any decisions?
. . . . .
Gina? Vanessa? Do we want to list the Clark County Shooting Complex as
the (only) venue for the shooting activity, or a closer-in assembly
point?
. . . . .
Thanks in advance for your answers!
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Schedule review:
Let's go over the schedule again, in particular looking for weak spots
and any items that need our attention. This has changed quite a bit
since our last review. Again, thanks to those who volunteered to do
the things have filled in and rounded out the schedule!
Overall, we have a very good framework in place with the exception of
Friday evening. Most days simply need some filling in.
. . . . . . . . . .
Sunday, March 22:
We normally have services at Metropolitan Community Church on Sunday
morning but this year we don't have a volunteer (so far) for it. We
need a volunteer to coordinate it (trivially easy) if it's to go on
the schedule. Volunteers?
Sunday afternoon is wide open. Something like shopping at Premium
Outlets North prior to FSE? Fantastic Indoor Swapmeet would work well
here as well.
As for Sunday evening ...
+6:00pm: Downtown Happy Hour Options (various)
+7:00pm: Downtown Dining Options (various)
We currently have two strong HH and dining options (Denny's and Brass
Lounge) but we will be in need of at least one more. Grotto, anyone?
Triple George, anyone? Tony Roma's, anyone?
As before, it would not hurt to have one "safer" HH and dining option
for Sunday evening.
After dinner on Sunday we have ...
+8:30pm: Downtown Evening Options (various)
+8:30pm: Fremont Street Experience (Fremont Street Experience) - ms
+9:00pm: Karaoke (Brass Lounge) - ms
Do we need any other downtown activity options? Something like a
scavenger hunt, anyone? Zip Line?
We've had talk about a downtown common gathering, and both the bar at
Denny's and Brass Lounge have been mentioned. How about continuing the
Karaoke venue as the "louder" common gathering and have a concurrent
"quiet" common gathering at Denny's? It would be very easy to circulate
between the two if one wanted to do so.
There's also been talk of a "safer" social (perhaps a second karaoke)
for those who aren't ready for something as exposed as FSE.
+10:00pm: Dancing at Paris (Paris - Cabaret Lounge) - ms
Do we want to keep this on the schedule for Sunday?
. . . . .
Monday, March 23:
For the most part, Monday is solid, but nothing is scheduled in the
morning between KKK and LWG. This would be great for some kind of a
shopping thing, or for something touristy. Springs Preserve?
Other than weakness in the morning, Monday is looking very good!
. . . . .
Tuesday, March 24:
+9:00am: Diva Las Vegas Invitational Golf (Wildhorse Golf Club) - ms
Golf is the main attraction for Tuesday morning, but that will not
attract everyone by any means. This would be an excellent timeslot for
an alternative shopping/touristy/recreational type of activity.
Tuesday afternoon has the Boob Session (LOL) :) but there's room for
other noncommecial items. Something touristy would be a very good fit
for Tuesday Afternoon. (/me puts on an old Moody Blues album and cranks
it.) :)
+6:00pm: Happy Hour options (various)
+7:00pm: Dining options (various) - ms
We now have three strong dining options (Ruths Chris, Texas de Brazil,
and Pamplemousse). We need at least one more, and preferably on the
inexpensive end of the price range to balance things out. Something
ethnic would be a good one here. Mexican? Asian? Thai? Those are all
reasonable in price. Buffet? Food Court? McDonald's? :)
+8:30pm: Evening Options (various)
MAJOR WEAK SPOT! Tuesday evening is one of our major needs! It's been
designated a multi-track evening, and wide open for shows, touristy
things (Eiffel Tower?), casino hopping, bar hopping (Audrey Tour?) or
about anything.
This (Tuesday evening) is one of our more significant weak spots!
There's movement toward getting the Big Wheel here on Tuesday evening if
the discount thing for Thursday falls through. Holly? We really need a
status update on the Thursday Big Wheel. Please!
. . . . .
Wednesday, March 25:
Wednesday morning is wide open between KKK and EHM. Something touristy
or recreational (Lake Mead Boat? Springs Preserve? Valley of Fire?)
would be a great mid-week activity for Wednesday daytime.
One Big Burning Question is lunch. Do we want to keep the EHM luncheon
as an exclusive single-track item or put in a LWG type option? Comments
on this one please!
+1:00pm: Meet Dr. Victoria (Erotic Heritage Museum) - ms
We have one strong daytime activity in here, but it will not attract
everyone.
As of this writing, Wednesday is the only daytime which is totally
free of commercial activities, so if you are in touch with GB/JY or
any other vendor who wants to do something, this is one of the only
remaining clear-channel timeslots for something commercial.
Other various smaller activities would be a good fit here too. Shopping?
Something touristy? Wax Museum?
For Wednesday evening ...
We have two strong HH and dining options for Wednesday, one (PF Chang)
with a fairly large capacity and the other being higher end (Giada).
That should cover us very well for Wednesday dinner.
Rock Vault is a good strong option for Wednesday and Wednesday is the
only-fit evening for the combined Giada/Rock Vault track.
It appears that things are moving in the direction of Wednesday for
KOH but this is not at all solid. We will temporarily hold off on any
further major planning for Wednesday or Thursday evenings, and the
planning of any other midscale "anchor" activities (Limo Tour, NSD)
until we get the Big Wheel update and the KOH timing is more certain.
. . . . . .
Thursday, March 26:
We have one very strong morning activity on Thursday (shooting), but it
will not attract everyone, so there is room for another.
We have three reasonably strong afternoon activities on Thursday,
Looking Glass, Pinball Museum, and Art Tour, for a very good mix of
commercial, cultural, and recreational. We can now consider Thursday
afternoon to be solid.
We'll temporarily table any further Thursday evening plans until we get
some answers to the unanswered IFs.
. . . . .
Friday, March 27:
Again, Friday morning is wide open between KKK and LWG. Fantastic Indoor
Swap Meet, anyone? FISM scored a perfect 5.0 for enjoyment in 2012 and
4.5 in 2014.
Friday afternoon is centered around Fashion Show Mall. There is room for
just about anything on Friday afternoon as well.
Now let's look at Friday evening:
+ 5:00pm: Afternoon Social (Chayo at the Linq) - ms
+ 6:00-10:00: Free time. You are on your own.
+ 10:00pm: Dancing at Paris (Paris - Cabaret Lounge) - ms
Ladies (gentlemen), that's what our Friday evening plans currently are!
A special mailing will be coming out regarding this evening's plans.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Comedian for DLV 2015:
Anyone want to take this one on? {ducking, running, hiding} :)

Activity Highlights:
Beverly (thanks, Bev!) just posted our first Activity Highlight for this
year, specifically for golf.
If you are in charge of an activity which is solid regarding day/time
and details, we encourage you to write up a brief Activity Highlight for
the DLV Discussion Forum. You can either post this yourself or send it
in with a note that it should be posted under your name.
This year we're going to try to go for a happy medium between making the
Activity Highlights "sticky" and managing "real estate" on the main
Discussion Forum screen. We'll keep each Activity Highlight as sticky,
meaning up top on the main Forum screen for at least two weeks, longer
if space permits, but move them to a link in a a sticky Activity
Highlight Summary item if and when space on the first screen gets tight.
Please consider doing this for any and all activities which you are
involved with. :)

Tejas de Brasil:
Vera writes:
Re: Brazilian dining ...either Tuesday or Wednesday evening would work
for us.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks Vera.
Let's put this down for Tuesday. We need a bit of variety for dining
options that evening, and this sounds like a great fit. Unless you say
otherwise we'll do the standard times for HH and dinner.

Karaoke update:
Linda writes:
I have checked with Shiela and unless something untoward happens, she
will be at the Phoenix, still on Sundays and Thursdays from 9PM - 1AM.
I guess we could tentatively schedule karaoke for either or both nights
and then see what develops as other activities get filled in. ...
Thursday would be out if KOH ends up on that night (or anything else
major), leaving only Sunday which would now be in conflict with the
Brass Lounge. Having never been to the Brass Lounge, I don't know what
it's like. I guess there's nothing wrong with scheduling 2 karaokes at
the same time?
Sunday is usually better than Thursday because the bar tends to be less
crowded, so you can get in more songs. Also, if KOH or some other major
event should end up on Thursday, then few people would show for karaoke
on Thursday; I know I wouldn't. That is why I recommended Sunday in the
first place.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
There's nothing that says that we can't schedule two sessions of Karaoke
(is that a common noun or a proper noun?) at the same venue at different
times, or even two sessions of karaoke at two different venues at the
same time. It's really up to what you want to schedule.
Although we want to focus our Sunday energy on downtown, one
consideration is that downtown is too exposed for some of our people and
some "safer" activities might be appreciated, particularly on that very
first evening.
As for KOH, as of this writing the wind seems to be blowing in the
general direction of Wednesday, but that's still very much up in the
air. You can make up your mind on either or both of these as things
fall into place.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Makeovers and Solo Challenges:
Sara (no "h") writes:
The "solo challenges" - Not a fan of this as presented and certainly not
something to put on a schedule. Perhaps a thread in the MyDLV titled
"Ideas For Things To Do While In LV" would be sufficient.
. . . . .
Update on the Friday makeovers:
It looks as if a change is coming. Seems that my main artist contact has
moved from Macy's to Nordstrom and her management is totally on board
for hosting the event which has previously been held at Macy's.
Six of one, half-dozen of the other in that the venue will change but
the premise won't because department store cosmetic departments are
virtually the same.
I'm still awaiting some details from her including how to work in the
proposed fragrance workshop (for lack of a better word) but for now, I
think we can change the schedule to "Nordstrom Makeovers (Nordstrom
FSM)" with the same time slots. I will update everyone once I hear from
her.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks, Sara.
It's been changed on the schedule. "Same time, across the mall." Please
let us know of any other changes.
Please see comments on Solo Challenges below.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
KoH and EHM activities:
Dionne writes:
> To move forward with Thursday evening's plans, first we need an
> update from Holly WRT the tentative Big Wheel activity, and in
> addition we need an update from the task force doing the EHM/KOH
> activities.
I suggest these KoH and EHM activities bifurcate and plan, separately.
If it makes sense to combine them, we can decide how that will happen.
later. The Meet Dr. V. is on track and will provide details, soon.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks, Dionne.
Let's consider EHM to be semi-solid and officially divorced from KOH.
Please check the time on the schedule to be sure it's what you want as
the start time for the EHM activity.
Also (Dionne and all), there is still an open question as to if the
luncheon at the EHM is to be our only "official" lunch for Wednesday or
if we want to list an additional regular recurring lunch session as
well. Comments?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Solo challenges with details:
Dionne writes:
I think I need to add some details to these activities.
- LINQ
auto collection has wide-open rooms where a TG group would stand out.
-RTR has only 3 dressing rooms so we would overwhelm this store, easily.
-V_Secret has just 4 dressing rooms so same thing here.
I have personally done each of these challenges and found them to be
fun.
I have a different concept in mind that is closer to a treasure hunt (or
Dionne's Bucket list) than a calendar group activity.
The hunt begins at the Opening dinner and results are reviewed at the
Final Dinner. If it can be setup upon Registration, then attendees
register for the hunt and check off the activities as they go.
At the Final Dinner, we can relate our adventures. These are open to
everyone and it could make a good icebreaker for making new friends.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
I always like new and different ideas, and I sure like this one much
better than presenting lists of things that people can do to occupy
their time!
I would like to hear more of a formal proposal, a name for the activity,
and how it would be organized.
I would like to find a way to put it as at least one line item on the
schedule, if only to be sure people know it's going on. Perhaps the
start day/time can be noted on the schedule with "ongoing" for the
duration.
To generate interest, you could announce it and give details at the
opening gathering, and do a summary at the closing gathering.
Comments, anyone?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Giada, Rock, and Hair:
Cami writes:
So based on the schedule, I think Wednesday would be best fit for
Giada's and for the Rock Vault concert. Happy Hour and dinner starting
at 6pm and concert at 9PM.
Monday would be best for Wig Seminar and I'm sure we can go to that same
bar as last year.
Nails can be scheduled thru Wendy directly, but can be Monday Am or
Tuesday and until she leaves.
We can plug Pinball Museum for perhaps Thursday afternoon or as a fill
in. Let me know if this is Ok.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks Cami.
Please check the schedule to be sure that the times and wordings are
what you expect.
We put the Giada affair as one line item starting at 6:00pm as you
specified above, for now at least. I might suggest (with the propensity
of our people to be "fashionably late") that if your dinner reservation
is for 6:00pm, we break out the Happy (half?) Hour to a separate line
item at 5:30pm. Please let us know if you want to do this. We do not
want this to slip and make the group late for the show!

KKK venue:
Katie writes:
Due to the closing of Betty's Cyber Cafe in the Quad and after some

This is in The Flamingo Hotel and is located to the South or left of the
check in desks.
>From the check in, Go towards the parking area and it is on the left
hand side, next to a garden lounge. The Cafe opens onto the garden area
which if it is not too cold in the mornings will be a really nice place
for taking photos!
At 8AM the gardens will likely be relatively unoccupied so bring your
cameras along 8 Am each day and have a brew or two.
I will very likely be there a bit before 8 so if anyone else would like
to arrive early they you will have company.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks Katie. We'll get the schedule updated.
As a point of clarification, left of the check-in desk at Flamingo, when
facing the desk, would be east.

Pamplemousse Update:
Delaney writes:
The status of Pamplemousse is I am holding a table for six, based on
last year's attendance. I have some flexibility to alter that based on
sign-ups.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks Delaney.
Capacity is set for six.
Availability will now show up in real time on the sign-up screen.
We'll assume that you want the "priority for those with valid cell phone
on file" for this one, to help control no-shows.

Bigs Program:
Delaney writes:
I was thinking about your question, and I do have a thought. perhaps we
should hold assigning matches to Littles who have previously attended
DLV until 01 March or so, while continuing to assign first timers
earlier, perhaps by 15 Feb. The downside is those first timers who sign
up and cancel, but waiting until mid-Feb might cut that churn, and in
any case, we have some of that now.
Other than that, I'm just enjoying the flu I have.
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
Hope the flu gets better! (Did you get your flu shot?)
It's really up to you and your Big Sister Team colleagues as to what the
timing will be. I'm often perplexed that returnees request Big Sisters
but I'm really not aware of all of the details.
Regarding the first-timers who sign up and cancel, it seems to me that
most of those are the ones who do not do a formal cancellation, but
simply fail to show up with no notice that they will not be present.
This (newcomer no-shows) is something I sure wish we knew how to handle,
as it's plagued us ever since the very first DLV.
