Congratulations:
Survey results were posted last week.
Everyone who worked on DLV 2014 can be proud that we beat the five
year moving average on both the overall enjoyment and comfort scales
this year!
The majority of the comments were positive, with many in the "warm
fuzzy" category.
Good job, well done, gang!
Average enjoyment rating was 4.41, in spite of many illness reports and
one particular well-attended activity getting less than stellar ratings.
This compares to a five year moving average of 4.38.
Average comfort rating was 4.75, an all-time record! Five year average
for comfort sits at 4.47.

I loved DLV this year. I may have gone overboard by planning over 7
events however every day was full of great activities. Plus I never met

Triple George Grill, Sunday
We had 8 girls come to the Triple George Grill on Sunday including
several first-timers. I was a little late coming from the Bar Rescue
tour, but I had a reservation and Marissa gracefully covered for me and
was able to get the group seated. The food was delicious and we had
lovely dinner.

Scavenger Hunt, Sunday
After dinner, we switched to the Scavenger Hunt including about half the
Triple George dinner group. We waited about 45 minutes for girls to come
over from the Grotto dinner (which ran late) which took us up to 10
attendees. Unfortunately several girls were getting tired and dropped
out when they realized walking was involved and we were back down to 7
again. We split into two teams of 3 and went out exploring Freemont
Street.

Beauty Bar, Sunday
As the scavenger hunt concluded we converged on the Beauty Bar.
Unfortunately several girls were put off by the $10 cover charge (for
special girl's night DJ event) so we had an impromptu switch to
late-night Denny's for the after-party. The one girl who had already
entered the club was able to sweet talk the bouncer into returning her
cover and joined us. We had about 10 people head over to Denny's for a
midnight happy hour, which worked better as a quiet venue to compare
photos and tally scores. Annie served as final judge.
I take responsibility for not finding a better bar to end the evening (I
miss the Drink n' Drag). It may still have worked if not for the cover
charge. Next year I will probably push to move the Scavenger Hunt back
to main strip, just to vary the scene and clues a little. We also still
need to find a better way to reconvene the group after the multitude of
dinner options.

Pole Dancing at Pole Fitness Studio, Wednesday
For the second straight year, pole dancing was an success. We had 7
people to begin with though as people rolled in we were soon up to 11.
We had the same instructor, Nikki, as last year. I think she really
excels at making people comfortable no matter what age, level of skill
or fitness. This year we focused on basic introductory spins and the
foundations of how to twerk (just in case you needed to know).

Pole Dancing at Kings of Hustler, Thursday
The Kings of Hustler had seven poles up on stage. They were all spinning
poles, which is definitely different and a little more tricky to learn
on.
The instructor at KOH was male, and his skills were unbelievable having
recently won the World Championship of pole dancing at age 50 (he is
possibly only male dancers I've met). Unfortunately I was really the
only one who showed up (we were only expecting 6). The time slot clashed
with all the Thursday dinner activities and also the stomach virus was
in full swing at this point (it knocked out 2-3 dancers). I ended up
paying the instructor to have wonderful private lesson, then he stayed
around to teach two new girls as the Ball started up. By next year, the
Kings of Hustler will have started an official pole school on Mondays,
Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. I am going to highly recommend the instructor
to my fellow pole dancers back in LA. I would love to go back, but I am
not sure how appropriate it is for beginners.

Fantasy Ball, Thursday
I think the Ball went extremely well given the short planning time, and
with lots of support from Dr Victoria and her staff. Dr Victoria is a
longtime supporter/attendee of DLV and it was great to see her bar. We
had great attendance (~70 people) as the main track activity for
Thursday night. We were able to incorporate a lot of different ideas
into the evening. There was the Amateur Drag Show partly inspired by the
spirit of the Pity Party. It was a little crazy organizing the lineup,
but I thought all our performers did really well especially with no
rehearsal. Thanks to Vera, Nicole, Vivian, Linda, Sherry, and Jill.
Perhaps the DJ was a little heavy-handed but he had never hosted a drag
show before.
Next up were the professional dancers, both male and female. Personally
I favor the women (that pole dancer was particularly impressive) but I
think people appreciated both. Whenever the stage was open, we had free
reign to dance which was fantastic.
Finally we went up to the roof for the Q&A with Dr Victoria. The view
was great and the staff set up heat lamps which made it nice and
comfortable. I loved the discussion as we each shared our stories and I
learned something new even from people I have known for years. The best
news was that the EHM is reopening with Dr Victoria as the new
president.
The only real hiccup for the evening was out of our control. At the last
moment, the main Hustler club refused to recognize the $10 deal
negotiated between me and Dr Victoria. I am not sure how many people
this effected, as it was only an issue for people being dropped off via
taxi at the main entrance.
Most people found the Kings of Hustler entrance at the back fairly easy
(they even laid out the red carpet). Dr Victoria apologized and tried to
make it up with free drinks and a promise of free entry to the EHM next
year. Dr Victoria's staff also offered to pay for limos to go pick up
anyone who needed a ride, but by then it was too late to get the word
out. I think the entire transportation issue could be fixed by arranging
for limos from several central gathering points. Next year, I would vote
to keep the Kings of Hustler as an EHM after-party in which case we can
also have limos go directly from EHM to the club.
I think the private club party allowed people to be even risque') than
they would be at the EHM. It was wonderful to see people emerge from
their shells and express themselves for the first time. The club has
several advantages over EHM in that it has large selection of cheap
drinks, amazing dancers, atmosphere and space to dance, but why not do
BOTH??

Club Surrender, Friday
The Wynn is still one of the classiest casinos with a great club
atmosphere and beautiful location. We had around 8 girls head over from
Paris, though we lost one to the stomach flu (she only made it as far as
the Wynn). Of course as there were poles, I had to find my way up there.
I sweet talked my way into the VIP section and climbed straight to the
top. This lasted a moment before security showed up. Turns out that the
poles are only available to groups with bottle service. I must of been
spoiled by the freedom given to us by the Kings of Hustler. Yet none of
this could put a damper on a wonderful evening.
I think my only concern was that once we were done with dinner at
Caesar's Palace we didn't really have time to fully enjoy Paris before
going to the Wynn. Next year I will probably move the Surrender trip
earlier in the week so we can stay at the large final dance at Paris.

Thanks for the report, Valorie.
We sincerely thank you for taking the lead on a number of very
successful activities this year. I know that Club Surrender "rang the
bell" on the enjoyment scale on the survey and that Triple George,
Scavenger Hunt, and Pole Dance Instruction scored very high.
A few comments here ...
As for "going overboard", you're the one who needs to be aware of what
your limits are, and you need to be the one who realizes if an overload
condition exists.
We need to be very careful (and this goes to all, not just to you) that
we don't overload and burn out our volunteers!
I've seen a few people, some very familiar names to our group, take on
more and more and more and eventually go through a cycle such as:
Enthusiasm -> Overload -> Frustration -> Burnout -> Drop out
They took on more than they could effectively handle, and reached the
point of diminishing returns. They became frustrated, burned out, and
eventually ceased being active volunteers.

As to the Beauty Bar, I've been there a number of times and I never
remember a cover charge!
For a multi-track evening centered downtown, a later-evening common
gathering would be a Real Good Thing<tm> and the Beauty Bar was just
the place for it.

I personally thought that the Fantasy Ball went very well. I sure did
not feel secluded or hidden away in the back portion of the club.
I took a taxi over there (LOL, I would have definitely gone for a
complimentary limo ride), and on the way I was explaining that there
should be a separate ladies entrance somewhere behind the complex. He
said that he drops people there all the time and did not know of a side
or back entrance but that he would ask at the main door.
As we drove up to the main entrance, one of the doorkeepers came up and
without even being asked told the driver to "take all ladies to the VIP
entrance back there" and motioned to drive around the building.
IIRC, the charge was $10 at the rear entrance.
I was very happy to find reasonable drink prices.
The deejay was just fine. He played a couple of my requests and even
downloaded a tune he did not have on the disk.

I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic about the re-opening of the EHM.
Their web site (I checked again this morning) says nothing about a
re-opening, and I'm sure it all comes down to $$$$$. It will take a
facility of at least a few thousand square feet (I am assuming that the
original building will not be available), and I know that will easily
run well into six figures per year. Then there's the cost of schlepping
it all back to Las Vegas, re-installing, wow, lots of time, effort, and
$$$$$.
I really hope they have the resources to pull this off!

DLV 2014 Comments and Analysis:

Hi
Finally home after a four week vacation including DLV. The following are
my comments on a number of issues that have been raised and couple of
other items I noticed.
Illness
As Annie has indicated I had what appeared to be a cold or flu. It came
on quickly around mid day Thursday. Late morning I was feeling OK but by
mid after I was coughing and had a running noise more like a waterfall
than anything else. I suffered through Friday but ended up spending all
Saturday in bed. I was certainly better on the Sunday but I didn9t
really shake all the symptoms for several weeks. But wait theres more.
On Tuesday I ended up getting a Urinary Tract Infection. I wouldn't wish
this on anyone, with initial symptoms being unable to pee but wanting /
needing to go every 30-45 minutes. It improved a little on Wednesday but
there was clearly blood and goo in my urine. I had a large Budwiser Lite
before dinner on Wednesday night and whatever is in that beer opened the
flood gates.
As I now know the only real cure is antibiotics and I finally succumbed
to a doctors visit nearly 12 days after getting the first symptoms. It
took 2-3 days for them to work but seems to have resolved the issues.
Generally I don't think there is much that anyone can do about waves of
flu, viruses or other illnesses circulating. Cleaning hands is one thing
but ultimately the bugs are in the air and its difficult not to
breath!!!!
This is the earliest DLV we've had and maybe the late winter, fall dates
have contributed to illness issues. This might be a consideration for
future dates???

Weather
The weather certainly wasn't warm for a lot of the DLV week. It wasn't
the coolest we've had, as I remember one year in particular playing golf
that was absolutely freezing. Seems like some people probably didn't
really allow for the cooler temperatures, having brought warmer weather
wardrobes. The following week was certainly warmer and by the time we
left had reached high 80s and 90s. As warm as this was it certainly was
uncomfortable and in fact made the evenings very pleasant.

Carmines
There have been a number of varying comments about Carmines.
My take is that food was excellent but on the face of it looked quite
expensive until you realised the plates were designed to be shared. We
had a a la carte table with 8-9 people. I took the lead and made sure
each person ordered something different, making sure everyone was
catered for (we had some vegetarians and other requirements). I had a
couple of dishes I never had before (in fact hadn't heard of) that were
delicious (thanks Julie). We had more than enough food and as far as I
know no one left hungry. It ended up cost $40 each including the
restaurant applied tip and a little extra. We had a great server who
helped us make sure we had the right amount of food. Drink wise I
thought the drinks were expensive but as I wasn't feeling well enough
drink a lot it wasn't too oppressive!
The location was a bit of a trek from the Valet park up on the top
level. And once inside it wasn't real clear how to get there (and I've
been in the Forum shops lots of times before). I think this actually
highlights a point made by others but certainly I noticed; that many of
the activity locations required a bit of navigation and certainly access
through public areas. I said at the times that there would be some
(especially newbies) that would be put off. With respect to Carmines I
don't remember there being a lot of people in the Forum shops when we
arrived or indeed when we left so probably was as busy or public as it
could have been!
The comic was a failure. He just wasn't funny, tried too hard and
probably lost the audience with a minute or two of starting.
As to the back room, I didn't really feel it was too isolated. I used
the down stairs restrooms several times with out problems and never
considered going to the upstairs ones at all. It certainly wasn't any
more isolated than Bahama Breeze although the room wasn't anywhere near
as big making it all quite cozy.

No shows
Disappointed about the number of No Shows. I only hosted one activity;
Joes Steak and Crab, in the Forum Shops on the Tuesday and was
disappointed we ended up with 8 out of supposedly twenty sign ups.
Admittedly we had to delay the dinner because we couldn't get a booking
for 16-17 at 7:00 but would easily had one for 8 if we'd known about the
drop outs. I think we received two apologies. Four of the eight were off
to a show at 9:30 and apparently made it comfortably so even the late
dinner time worked out OK.
I hung out with Ginger and Kaye for most of the week and the Lunch with
Ginger was poorly attended. On the Sunday two others showed but neither
stayed for lunch, just there to say hello. IMHO the buffets are now OVER
priced and the food quality suspect at best. I went to the one on Friday
at Gold Coast where we had 9 or so. It was cheap and the food OK but not
sure I got value for money even then!
Solution here is to use more traditional sit down locations, such as
Claim Jumper, or Maggianios (sp!?) etc Maybe others with lower priced
menus as well. It may be that the Lunch with ???? Has reached its end of
life. Maybe we need something that has an activity combined with lunch
to make it work again?

Hustler / Fantasy Ball
Another activity that seems to have had mixed reviews. Unfortunately it
probably suffered a little from the late change of venue but it seemed
to me it went down well. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of
the acts and entertainment and I certainly felt comfortable in the club.
I seem to recall someone suggesting it as a 'sleazy sexy place' but it
seemed reasonably classy place if a little remote to me. This type of
activity is a good thing in my opinion as it allows those of the group
that want to indulge in less acceptable clothes, costumes, etc to be
themselves. Its not everyones 'cup of tea' but that should be recognised
by each individual and NOT go!

Golf
Liked the course, certainly better than Desert Rose. Played there agin
the following week in boy mode and enjoyed it just as much.
Groupings need to better. Mixing good mediocre and plain poor golfers
together is frustrating for everyone. The round was VERY slow and I
really just lost any enjoyment and rhythm towards the last few holes.
This wasn't helped by the appearance of two guys who jumped in front of
us on the last hole and then we had a rather pointed run in with them
halfway down the fairway. They would be best described as a couple of
a-holes that needed some manners although in part they might have had a
issue with some of the group hitting up on them!!

Attendee Information
Well if there is one area I think an improvement is needed its in what
and how the information on DLV is distributed in the week prior to the
event itself.
I for one DIOD NOT get any LFM or all the supporting material.
While I was away I thought this might have been my fault, because of an
issue about leaving my email on at home however on my return I
discovered that this was NOT the case and I had no record of receiving
in LFM and other emails. I did get a copy from Ginger, or at least a URL
which helped but its trawl to get through it to find what you want.
Improvements need to include:
* One pager will ALL location addresses
* One pager with ALL activities, times and venue
* Maybe a better contact service / numbers. Not sure about this as it
affects individuals
Don't think the group as a whole is ready for ONLY electronic but
certainly we should start moving that way.

Final Assessment - A Question?
Has DLV attendees changed their attitude and intents, now really going
mainstream in a bigger way and wanting more 'normal' activities.
Seems like a lot of people came and went to a couple of things but then
did a lot of there own things, restaurants, shows, shopping, etc. The
survey results suggest that it some ways but there needs to be better
understanding of whether or not the schedule is meeting expectations.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Are we trying to schedule too
many activities?
I haven't been to DLV for a few years but I was pleasantly surprised by
the general standard of everyones appearance. Sure there were a few
times I saw some major issues but generally I thought everyone was well
presented.
Anyway I hope the above provides some value and provokes some further
discussion on an any of the issues.

Thanks Michelle. You bring up a number of good points and I would like
to respond to a few of them ...
Illness: This was the worst I've ever seen it at any TG event, DLV or
otherwise, ever! We usually see a few cases of sniffles, allergies,
maybe a twisted ankle, a case or two of Galiano [sic] Fever, but never
anything like this.
We really didn't know how widespread this was until the reports started
rolling in after the event.
It also sounds like you caught something (bacterial UTI) that had not
previously been reported.
There's nothing we can do about what happened, but we can be proactive
at future events to encourage healthy and sanitary behavior.
One off-line suggestion was to seek donations of a few boxes of hand
sanitizer wipes (a few $$$ for a box of 100) and pass them out,
liberally, and encourage our people to use them, regularly.
But anyway, the illness issue this year is most definitely the exception
and not the rule. We haven't ever seen it this bad in all of our
previous 17 years and hopefully will not see it again.

Carmines: I did not feel that great that evening, and chose not to eat,
but I had been looking forward to this all week. :(
I personally did not think that the prices were out of line with the
prices for a nice dinner at any place of similar scale. The drinks were
not cheap, but typical prices for a nice restaurant.
I think the main issue with Carmine's was that the majority of the
attendees, despite the posting of the menu on the Attendee Final
Information page and the personal notes from Cami explaining the menu
options, did not know how things worked or what to expect.
The common theme in the survey responses runs along the line of a lack
of choice, not much difference than the complaints we received when we
had a limited menu, and the complaints about the "one size fits all"
meals typically served at other events.
To make a dinner like this work, those at each table had to be on the
same page WRT what to order and such. Those at the table had to agree on
what was to be ordered. As we know, getting a group of TGs to agree on
ANYTHING can be an exercise in futility. :) You taking the lead and
coordinating things for your table helped quite a bit.

No shows: We've always had no-shows, both for the event as a whole and
the individual activities. Every TG event I've ever been associated with
over the years had no-shows.
Joe's had a final sign-up count of 19 and an estimated turnout of 14.7.
To have a real-world show-up count of far less than the estimated
turnout indicates other factors, and I really believe that illness was a
major factor this year regarding far lower than expected show-up rates,
especially for some dining activities.

Lunch With: I don't think that Lunch With is stale, but I do think it
needs to evolve with the needs and desires of the attendees.
Lunch With and the Pre-DLV gathering are two activities which used to
get very good turnouts, but in recent years have seen a drop-off in
attendance.
Last year and this year we ran specific survey questions regarding Lunch
With to try to get a handle on the lower turnouts that we have been
seeing in recent years. Last year's survey focused on the reasons for
not participating. This year's survey focused on timing and buffet vs.
regular restaurant.
Last year we confirmed that there were no "at fault" reasons on our part
for the lower attendance. Main reasons were various personal schedule
issues.
This year we learned that there is a slight (but not significant)
preference for an earlier timeslot. 11:30am was cited in the survey.
However, there was a fairly significant "tilt" in the answers against
the use of buffets. Not a single respondent, zippo zilch, nada,
expressed a strong preference for a buffet. I'm very sure that the
increasing cost of the typical buffet is a contributing factor here.
It will really be up to those volunteering to host(ess) to make the
decisions, but I foresee that next year we will see more use of regular
order-from-the-menu restaurants and perhaps the trying of an earlier
time for the Lunch With sessions..

Gowf: I don't golf, but one complaint on the survey was that the same
person wins each year. Is this really the case? As I've said, I'm not
a golfer, but I would think that some kind of a handicap could be used
to assure more of a "dead heat" match.

Attendee Information: I take reports of missing e-mail, particularly
those on important items such as final mailings, very seriously and
personally.
Yours was the third "I never got the LFM" report this year. In all
cases, including yours, the logs on our side show that the mailings were
all accepted by the MX receivers for the receiving domains. (Copy of log
sent to you under separate cover.) That's about all we can do, as once
the mail is accepted by the receiving domain, it's out of our control.
Hopefully you can go through the logs and mail spools on your side and
trace things from there.
Unfortunately, reports of missing items such as this always seem to come
in after the fact, long after there's any opportunity to do anything
about it. If these were reported prior to the event, we could easily
verify receipt or resend if needed.
You probably have not seen some of the schedule options and other
information we've been giving out the past few years. The custom

This year a "I don't care about options" button was added which just
selects the most common options. The default options will give most
activity info including the venue address.
A tabular "drill down" schedule also exists, and works quite well on
mobile devices. It still needs work, mainly along the line of real

We had a special page of information regarding getting to both of our

It included an inside map of the Forum Shops noting the particular
location of Carmine's in the complex.
I don't know how we can do a better contact service other than having
volunteers answering phones and e-mail as reliably and quickly as is
possible. The only issue I had was that I missed a few calls simply due
to the background noise where I was making it impossible to hear the
cell phone ringer. Other than attaching one of those raucous bullfiddle
klaxon horns to it, I don't know how to make that better.
We've been "all electronic" throughout our years except for two when we
did pass out a map and schedule. The issue I have with encouraging our
people to forego the printing of the map/schedule is the possibility of
an outage. We do have a backup server available, so next year we might
try emphasizing paperless information.
What I foresee for next year is tighter coupling of the registration and
activity sign-up with attendee information. I foresee retiring what
remains of the "Large Final Mailing" (actually, only the sign-up summary
and link to attendee information as of this time) and moving it to more
of a personalized Final Attendee Information page.

Scheduling: I don't think we are scheduling too much. I think we had a
very well-rounded schedule this year for the most part.
This year we did pay attention to be sure we did not have any no-win
crunch times. Yes, there were a few cases where attending activities
that were back to back was impossible or impractical, but none of these
cases applied to any of the major or more popular gatherings.
I think the time crunch reports come mainly from people biting off more
than they can comfortably chew. They want to do all they can and it
eventually catches up with them. I also think that people (not just our
folks but LV visitors in general) don't realize how much time simple
things take, such as going back to the room to grab something, walking
to the parking garage, waiting on line for a taxi, and, of course,
traffic delays.
The only report I recall immediately of a major time crunch is that the
Bar Rescue Tour ran long and one Coordinator was late for a subsequent
activity.

Mainstream:
You are quite correct that there has been (more of) a shift toward the
mainstream over the past few years.
The wind continues to blow in the mainstream direction, particularly
regarding vendors. Our people are becoming more comfortable and
confident at mainstream cosmetic counters, mainline department stores,
etc.
I think this may be a contributing factor in the lower Lunch With
turnout, meaning that attendees, in general, are now more confident
with regard to dining on one's own.
Our people are also becoming more adventurous and comfortable taking
such transportation modes as taxi, city bus, casino shuttles, Monorail.
This year the bar crawl was a "Bar Rescue" tour, visiting places that
were featured on the stateside TV program of that name, all of them
mainstream. Ironically, the one "alternative" bar in the area that was
featured on the program (Gipsy) closed shortly after the airing.
This is as opposed to the Alternative Bar Crawl we featured up until a
few years ago.
We do still have good showings at most of our "safe venue" activities,
only six of them this year. We've also had good turnouts to the Frank
Marino Show, which historically has been one of the "safer" entetainment
options.
I don't envision "safe venue" activities going away totally, but the
desires of the attendees and volunteers have been coaxing the whole
program in the mainstream direction and will probably continue to do so.

Anyone who knows our people and knows how we do things will certainly
see that this is patently absurd!
Our volunteers are simply not the type to do this!
I don't want to see anyone get discouraged and hesitate to plan any
similar commercial activities.
This comment is clearly a one-off, from someone who somehow got some
kind of a very bad impression about some very good people! :(
