Org List:
This is the DLV 2014 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Continuing the follow-up:
More activity reports below. Keep 'em coming, gang! :)
Let's plan on one more ORG mailing before we add in the new 2014-2015
volunteers, so if anyone has anything relevant to the 2014 event which
would not apply going forward, please get that in.
As for close-to-final numbers ...
Our total reported and observed headcount now sits at 156. This is
about as close to final as we can get. This is roughly 5% lower than
predicted, which really is not bad, and within 5% of our previous 5
years' average.
After four "nag" mailings and several "missing in action" postings,
about half of the 53 not-accounted-for people have responded one way or
the other. Several personal sightings have also been reported. As of
this writing, we still have 27 who are showing no sign of life in
response to the requests to confirm attendance and we really don't have
much of an option other than to mark them as no-shows.
With all of the reports of cold/flu and GI issues, it's quite likely
that illness was responsible for several of our people being absent.
A very alert reader posted links to reports of norovirus outbreaks in
Las Vegas shortly before and during the DLV timespan. Some of the
symptoms reported by our people were definitely in line with those
reported on the outbreak reports.
. . . . .
About 550 photos have already come in. Most have been posted in the
staging area. Staging area links will go out to all who are marked as
"present" on the roster within the next day or so. As with the last few
years, we'll have the "like" and "remove" buttons to automate the photo
selection process.

Attendee survey:
It's the end of the month, and the DLV 2014 Attendee Survey will close
within the next few hours.
As of this writing, 81 mostly-complete responses have been received plus
a handful of comment-only responses. This number (81) represents about
52% of our attendee base and is typical of what we see on surveys such
as this one.
The first of two reports (the objective items) will be posted later
today. The second, which contains the comments and suggestions and such,
will most likely appear tomorrow, as there's quite a bit of formatting
and editing to prepare that particular report.

Anyone who is a regular DLV attendee knows them both, as they have been
regulars for quite some time.

Maybe we can post up a Memorial page in her honor.
. . . . . . . . . .
We've done this in the past, twice in recent years, unfortunately, for
two others who have passed on.
Keri has stated that this would be appropriate and appreciated and that
Angie would have wanted this. We'll do this in conjunction with the DLV
2014 follow-up pages.
If anyone has any photos of Angie alone or Angie and Keri which do not
appear on the various DLV pages, please let us know.

Illness at DLV:

I reported coming down with the flu-like headcold bug. After over 3
weeks, Im still fighting this thing. It is unusual for me to get sick at
all so this is an unpleasant surprise.
It started as I was driving home on Saturday with a bad mood that I
thought was post-DLV sadness. Sunday my head was congested along with a
sore throat. By Tuesday I was too weak to work or do anything other than
sleep. I lost my voice by Friday and remained weak. I have lost 4 lbs.
While I feel much improved after 3 weeks, I have some head congestion
and a sore voice. There is no evidence of infection or fever so I know I
will recover. I have been fighting this thing with Robitussin and
aspirin. Just wanted to report this in case anyone else is also fighting
this thing and is concerned.
Hope everyone is feeling healthy!
. . . . . . . . . .
We most definitely had more illness reports this year than in any
previous year. From the symptoms reported, there were a few different
ailments going around in our group.
Moving forward, we need to emphasize such things as good hygiene, along
with common courtesy, meaning that if people have flu-like symptoms,
they should stay away until they are sure they are no longer toxic. We
had such an announcement in the LFM a few years back when there was
concern over a flu outbreak just prior to DLV. "If you have it, don't
spread it!" :)

Golf Report:
Danielle writes:
What an improvement.
The new course was, like, a real course. Well-maintained and fun. And
the people there could not have been friendlier. And it was maybe 10 or
15 minutes from The Strip, closer than where we had been playing,
although one or two people had trouble finding it. You know who you are.
We had 26 players, which was a big jump from last year, despite an
increase in the cost. But nobody complained. They set up sandwiches,
chips and dessert. They took photos of us. They brought in the stakes
for longest drive and closest to the pin. They really went way, way out
of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcome.
And, to cap it off, I believe they ended up throwing in rental clubs for
those who didn't bring their own. That was not negotiated. So don't
necessarily expect it again. But it showed how welcoming they were.
Unlike previous years, we did a shotgun start. And that helped us all
finish more or less around the same time. So we could all partake of the
fabulous gifts that Bev arranged for, and the grab bag that enabled
everyone to go away a winner.
One note about Paypal. I've been a member for years. But, if you
weren't, apparently you now had to join, in order to send money. And
that was a bit of a hassle. Although you could then delete the account.
Also, two of the 26 players had problems having the payment go through.
Don't know why.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks for the report, Danielle.
It sounds like the annual golf match may have settled upon a new home.
Golf has been our longest-running recurring activity. We're glad to see
the increased level of participation this year. :)
As for the turnout, yes, it was very good, just a wee bit over the
machine-predicted turnout of 24.
Thanks again for coordinating this. :)

Orientation:
Vera writes:
Katie, By all means you should have jumped in. Anything anyone wanted to
add would have been a big help. I am not a control freak and I assure
you I was doing my best to wing through it.
I have to say though I have to agree that all the girls that attended
looked like they had everything they needed as far as information was
concerned. I didn't see anyone that appeared to be lost or didn't know
what was going on. That helped quite a bit.

Annie responds:
I think that we will converge, eventually, on a means of welcoming the
newcomers and effectively addressing their concerns. Although I
personally pushed back on the "classroom" type of thing, I do admit
that what we did this year was the best we've ever done along this line.
Having the session on Monday, the second day of DLV, was probably the
best compromise, allowing us to get the largest number of newcomers that
we can. Having it immediately prior to a major gathering also helped.
As we've seen, the new people who attended tended to be well informed.
We need to encourage a higher level of participation. It's also becoming
evident that it's not (only) the newcomers who are the low-information
attendees.
Regarding turnout, we did not do a sign-up for this, but the
machine-predicted newcomer total projection was 43 for the event as
a whole. As of this morning, 34 taking the survey indicated that they
attended by entering an enjoyment score. This may include some returnees
who attended for various reasons, but this number does show that we were
indeed successful in capturing a significant percentage of our new
attendees.

Activity Reports:
Linda writes:
Here are my reports on my 3 activities:
1.- Blue Ox Tavern HH and Dinner:
We had only 15 attendees, which I believe is less than half the number
who signed up. However, it seemed like everyone had a good time and
enjoyed their meal. (I know I did.)
At least one of the attendees was a member of the "Original 5" and a few
others were longtime DLVers.
Although this was intended, in part, as a pre-karaoke dinner (since it
is close to the Phoenix), there were only 3 of us who actually went on
to karaoke. There were a few others who had planned on going, but
changed their minds after eating. Upon leaving, I spoke briefly with Ron
Aronsohn, expressed my thanks and apologized for the smaller than
expected turnout. He said it was okay and looks forward to seeing us
again next year.
. . . . .
2.- Karaoke with Shiela:
We had a pretty decent turnout, although there were only a few of us who
stayed for the full 4 hours. At the beginning, there were only about 6-8
of us, but this grew to around 25 by midnight and gradually diminished
to 6-8 again by 1 AM.
The Phoenix had a "Welcome Diva Las Vegas" banner on some of their TV
monitors, which I had requested. Of course, a number of regular Phoenix
customers were there too, but not as many as usual. We pretty much took
over the section in front of the stage -- all the couches and booths.
All-in-all, I thought it went pretty well, and I hope we can do it again
next year.
. . . . .
3.- "Just You" Open House:
Considering all that was available (clothes, shoes, wigs, cosmetics,
makeovers, food, conversation, etc.), I thought the turnout was rather
disappointing; probably 10-15 girls. I didn't even see everyone because
I learned later that some had come only to the front of the shop rather
than to the party room in back where the food and refreshments were.
Anyway, I think those who did come had an enjoyable experience. There
was lots of food left over!
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks for the reports, Linda.
One contributing reason for the unusually light turnout at various
activities is most likely, as reported many times, illness.
Of the 42 signed up for Blue Ox, the machine predicted a turnout of 27.4
which may, in and of itself, appear low, but many of those signed up
fall in demographic groups having very high fall-out rates. To have only
55% of the predicted turnout show up for any activity is highly unusual
and does indicate extenuating factors, one of which is certainly that
some simply did not feel well.
A turnout of 25 at Karaoke is very good, however, exceeding the
estimated turnout of 20.
A turnout of 15 for a commercial open house is really not that bad. We
have had a few embarrassingly-low (as in low single digits) turnouts at
a few commercial open house sessions in the recent past.

Hofbrau report:
Vera writes:
Here's my report on the Bavarian HofBrauHaus Tuesday night dinner.
Hosted by Vera DelMar
Attendance: 17? I know it was under 20
Everyone was there on time, and we all met at the front bar for Happy
Hour.
Joey our bartender is always so nice. It was good to see him again.
Again this year, as last year there were some real German tourists (men)
that were at the bar and we got to meet and talk to.
Our dinner table was ready by 6:30m and I asked everyone if they wanted
to go in an order dinner then. We all agreed and got seated. The German
food was delicious.
The atmosphere was festive and loud. Had fun listening to the Oom-Pah
band and people watching, especially the table full of Japanese tourist
sitting behind us. I could host this event again next year.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks Vera.
The machine-predicted turnout for Hofbrau was 16, so a real-world
turnout in the 17-19 range was right in line with what was expected.
We did have one report of an individual arriving an hour early and
eventually giving up and leaving. A check of all of the versions of
our schedule showed the correct timing for the Hofbrau HH and dinner.

Hi All,
We had our annual Shooting trip on Wednesday morning at Discount
Firearms on Highland, as always the staff was happy to see us and very
accommodating. Several of the staff members have been there since we
started using the facility and they are pleased to see us everytime we
come.
This was a great year, we had 15 people plus Vanessa and I, which is our
best year ever. We had visitors from Australia and our favorite ammo
abuser from New Zealand. We did a lot of free shooting and had our
annual Annie Oakley contest with a match pistol at 50 feet.
I brought a great many firearms and lots of ammo, and I think everybody
got to shoot as much as they wanted. Vanessa and I were greatly pleased
when at the end of the exercise everybody paid their fair share of the
range tab and we didn't get stuck with a large bill. I have found that
shooters tend to be good that way.
The winners of our Annie Oakley contest were Carol in First Place and
Second Place went to Laura. It was fun they were tied up to the eighth
shot as a tie breaker.
Many people came up and said that they had a great time and its feedback
like that that keeps us coming back to do something a little different
at DLV. I think not only is DLV the only Transgendered Golf tournament,
but I guarantee that DLV provides the only transgendered shooting
tournament!
What more could you ask for? Thanks to everybody for their participation
and keeping everything safe. We take pride in just how safe we keep the
shooting sports.
Gina and Vanessa
Your Shootist goddesses.
. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks for the report.
The machine-predicted turnout for shooting was 13.4. An actual turnout
of 15, therefore, is right where it should be.
You are correct that this is one of the more unusual activities for a TG
event, but it's been a recurring favorite and is very popular and always
highly rated. It's one of those which sets DLV apart from the others! :)
