Hotels and other items:

The good news this week, very good news that is, is that unless
somebody wishes to arm-wrestle the volunteer Coordinators for the
privilege, both of our major large-attendance gatherings appear to
be solid. Big thanks go out to Cynthia and Bev for making this
happen! :)

Our main pressing item is the selection of suggested hotels. See
item below. We wish to have this solid within the coming week.

The bad news this week is that we now have a leadership position
vacancy. See item below. Please consider volunteering if you think
your skill set would make a good "fit" for this position.

Hotels and activities:

Beverly writes:

At the present, I am planning on staying at Harrahs because of the great
deals available. Last year I stayed at IP and visited Harrahs several
times with no problems. It is also very convenient to use the back
passage to go between the two places, easy parking (not sure what that
will be like with the construction going on this year).

I have also contacted Bahama Breeze and reserved the Friday night for
our final night.

I love Katie's idea of the morning coffee connection and will plan on
joining her most mornings and helping out.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

JoAnn responds:

Yes, the Bahama Breeze is the location for the "final night" and thanks
for stepping up top get it reserved. Annie and I appreciate this
pro-active help.

So now we should be thinking of some "new, dynamic and fun" adjunct
activities for the evening. This can be in addition to raffle, dinner
music, photo ops, .... ????

Hotel suggestion:

Bob writes:

Hey Joann, this is 2012, not 2013, as your Thanksgiving greeting
suggests.

Has anyone suggested the Tuscany? They are sponsors of a few TG events
here in Vegas including the Gay Rodeo and some of the the Royal Court.
. . . . . . . . . .

Joann responds:

Bob--

Just a blonde who knows what is going on, but not sure of the year!!
That is why I had to change from being a History Major to a Politics
(PoliSci) Major. The story is important, not the time.!!!! Thanks

Your suggestions that you present... Yes, so how can we get five [ pick
any number +/-] of the Gay Rodeo come and attend one of our activities.
And the Royal Court...? This is the thinking I suggest we need to
start "pushing"... thanks.

Just noticed where it said "dates to be announed". I thought the dates
for DLV 20113 were already voted on and confirmed.
. . . . . . . . . .

Good catch! You are correct. This was an oversight and has been
corrected on the tailers for both ORG and DLV general mailings.

Hotel suggestion:

Camille writes:

Hi, Friends

Regarding the hotel selection, I would suggest the Artisan. It seems
to have everything that I am looking for in a venue. Thanks.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Camille. Please see the notes on the Artisan in the item
below.

Calling the hotel question:

We need to announce our suggested hotels shortly after the first of
December, and we're hoping that this can be finalized in this list
cycle.

We (Annie and JoAnn) would like to put forth a slate of three hotels
to serve as our Suggested Hotels for DLV 2013.

These are, in alphabetical order:

1. Harrah's
2. Paris
3. Tuscany

In order to move this along and stay within procedure, you may
consider this to be a motion raised by either JoAnn or Annie and
seconded by the other.

A few notes on each hotel ...

Harrah's: This serves as a "replacement" for the popular Imperial
Palace this year. The Imperial Palace is now under transition and
there are too many unknowns to suggest it in good faith this year.

Caesars Entertainment, owner of both Harrah's and IP, has been
steering their lower-priced business to Harrah's during the main
phase of the Linq Project, which includes the rebranding and the
renovation of the IP, and offering some very attractive rates.

The rooms at the IP will still be available during DLV, but the
rooms at Harrah's next door are cheaper and a bit nicer!
. . . . .

Paris: Long-standing favorite upscale DLV hotel. Management has
released a statement inviting GLBT business years ago. Paris is
also a place we've used many times for various activities.
. . . . .

Tuscany: Suggested by Bob (above). Tuscany has never been one of our
suggested hotels in years past, but has received good ratings as a
"write in" over the past few years. Bob's remarks confirm that it is
GLBT-friendly, as do reports we've received over the years.

This serves as our off-strip "safer" option for those who are a bit
shy of the crowded and hectic hotel lobbies which are found at most
of the Strip hotels.
. . . . .

No significant "derogs" have been raised recently regarding any of
these three hotels. All of them are within a reasonable distance to
each other.
. . . . .

So, why not the Imperial Palace?

Too many unknowns this year. We do know that some construction and
renovation will be taking place during DLV, but we don't know what
that will entail, and how much noise and disruption will occur. We
don't know which amenities on the property will be open and which
will be closed, either temporarily or permanently.

Rooms are still available, and anyone who really want to stay there
can certainly do so.
. . . . .

So, why not the Artisan?

Basically too many complaints last year, mainly about noise in one
form or another. Artisan actually dropped off of our "99 club" last
year after the ratings for DLV 2012 were in. We can't in good faith
say "we suggest this hotel, but don't plan on getting a good night's
sleep" or anything like that.

We'll most likely have our Welcome Celebration and some other various
activities there, so the removal as a suggested hotel is certainly
not a burned bridge.

Again, those who want to stay there certainly can do so.
. . . . .

So, why not Palace Station?

Mainly because the two times it's appeared on our suggested list,
very few of our people stayed there. We've had our people stay there
off and on, and we've dined there a number of times throughout our
history.

As always, anyone who wants to stay there, can.
. . . . .

Others in the Also Ran category.

For those who do not have to ask how much something costs, the
Bellagio was considered.

For those who truly believe in what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,
the Del Mar Motel was also considered, although rejected due to
recent complaints that the beds were very dirty and rock hard and
that the rooms were very hot in the summer and very cold in the
winter.
. . . . .

To move this along, we're considering the presented slate of three
suggested hotels to be a live motion on the floor. We would LOVE
to see this carry, unopposed, but if there are any objections or
serious concerns, we'll vote.

We'll keep the floor open for objections for 48 hours after this
mailing. If no objections come in, we'll consider it to carry by
acclamation. If objections or serious concerns come in, we'll go
right to a vote. If you are of voting status, please watch your
inbox in about 48 hours in case this goes to a vote.

Big Sister Coordinator:

Nora writes:

I hope all is well and that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

All good things must eventually come to an end. Right now it looks like
I will be out of town for DLV 2013. Coordinating the Big Sister program
in my opinion is an important role and should be run by someone who will
be here and be available for the entire event. Should there be a problem
someone must be here to treat it.

The years in which I have been the coordinator has been very rewarding.
It has been a great experience. I can honestly say that I have benefited
as much if not more than those volunteering and those asking for help.

It is only fair that I make this decision now so that a new coordinator
be located in time to work with the new volunteers and those requesting
help. Of course I will work with the new coordinator and offer any help
that may be needed.

I still hope to be here for DLV 2013 but as things are uncertain at this
time a decision has to be made before the requests start coming in.
. . . . . . . . . .

We wish to thank Nora for many years of service coordinating the
Big Sister program, and, of course, for giving early notice of her
non-availability.

To all, the position of Big Sister Coordinator is now open.

The floor is open for nominations for Big Sister Coordinator and
self-nominations are encouraged. :) If you are interested in acting
as Big Sister Coordinator, or if you know of someone you believe is
highly qualified to serve, please speak up.

The term of Big Sister Coordinator is undefined. It can be as little
as agreeing to serve for the current event only, or it can be an
ongoing duty.

The main qualification for this position is the desire to help others,
mainly those who are new to public exposure and apprehensive.

As to experience needed, experience coming out should be all that is
required! Those who are newly-out and new to the DLV volunteer scene
are encouraged to consider this.

The main duties of the Big Sister Coordinator are:

1. Matching Little Sisters with Big Sister volunteers, working
toward a "best fit" in the matches.

2. Corresponding with Little Sisters prior to DLV regarding concerns
and issues they have.

3. Standing by during DLV to handle any "Emergency" issues which
require the intervention of a Big Sister or the escalation to the
DLV organizers.

4. Keeping the Project Manager advised as to when appeals for Big
Sister volunteers should go out.
. . . . .

The Big Sister Coordinator also serves as a member of the DLV
Administrative Committee. This is a low-impact duty and is stated
on line at: http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/administ/admcom.html
. . . . .

We hope that this position can be filled prior to the opening of
newcomer registration, which will begin on or about February 1.

If you would like to be considered for the position of Big Sister
Coordinator, or if you would like to nominate someone, please write
in and say so.

It's the group here who makes the decision as to who fills this
position.

DocRobbySherry writes:

I think this could be a well attended event. Depending on where and when
it's scheduled. I'm willing to help host the event if it's close to my
hotel.

I've stayed at the IP the last 2 years. But, I understand that's not
happening in 2013? I can't do it early AM as Sherry, but can as Robert.
If u need help, I could commit to MOST mornings AFTER 8:00 AM.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks DRS!

I'm sure we'll have people staying at the IP this coming year, but
CET is most definitely steering people next door to Harrah's. The
facilities toward the rear of the main hotel building, such as
Betty's Cyber Cafe, may very well be available, although it would
be a good idea to make some phone calls shortly before we put our
schedule to bed to confirm.

If that doesn't work out, there's always the Starbuck's at Harrah's
