JoAnn's Words:

Back to name tags. ...

Maybe a pin would just be a nice thing to have as we proceed through the
week. At the same time, maybe we have name tags and as Rosada suggests
with the year of one's first attendance placed under the individual's
name, but same letter size as the name.

Also as the week progresses fewer will wear the name tags, and that
might just be a "normal progression we accept" while keeping the pin
concept continuing. Just a thought for discussion.

Tags, pins, and such:

Sarah writes:

I woke from my nap and realized there was planning for the next DLV
being done. I'll toss my two cents into the discussion on a couple of
issues if you don't mind.

On the name tags, I think there is some resistance to wearing them just
because they do stand out so well and anyone not associated with DLV
can see who you are. If one of the reasons for the discussion is to be
able to help identify new attendees, how about this option?

Colored ribbons, similar to those you see for various causes, like the
pink ribbon for breast cancer or a yellow ribbon for Tony Orlando and
Dawn? The name tags work well when we are at something that is mostly
us, but for some of the other events in more mainstream locations, a
ribbon pinned to your clothing would be under the radar but something
another DLV'er could look for.
. . . . . . . . . .

JoAnn responds:

How about having ribbon instead of a Diva pin. Or is this the
opportunity of bringing back Diva pin?
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

The comment that the DLV name tag "outs" the wearer has been made off
and on over the years. I personally question this. There are so many
event badges being worn in Las Vegas that, at least to me, they all
appear as one big blur, except in the cases where I'm a part of the
event. Our logo has sometimes appeared on the tags, but always in a
small form.

Even something more obvious, such as a DLV t-shirt (and I'm not the
only one who has been seen wearing them in recent years), will be
seen by the Great Unwashed Masses as just another logo of some kind.

However, perception can be reality, and yes, there are probably some
of our people who feel less conspicuous when they forego the DLV name
tag. I've observed over the years that tag-wearing tends to get less
and less as the week goes on, and I really think that the primary
reason that tags are not worn more frequently is that they are simply
forgotten or not considered a priority.

Communication:

Ginger writes:

The problem of last moment and emergency communication during DLV.

Let's think out of the box for a possible solution to the communications
problem.

If we had a telephonics expert (hint) who knew how to send out blanket
text messages to a cell phone list that would likely be the best way to
contact DLV attendees. Just about everyone has a cell phone these days
and even basic phones receive plain text messages don't they?

All we would need to do is collect the cell phone numbers from the
attendees who wanted to receive last moment notifications. Those who
wanted absolute assured privacy for their cell phone could obtain a
temporary throw-away phone at low cost or just not subscribe to the
service.

I don't have a clue how to go about doing this, but I belong to two
such lists, one for the county sheriff's department emergency
notification service where I live and one for the university where
I used to work and still do, but not much. I'm sure very large
notification systems like the two I belong to have high costs, but
it is just possible that we have some experts in this field associated
with DLV who could set up a small list for us very easily.

;)

Annie responds:

Thanks Ginger.

This is more or less what I was discussing a few weeks back. We do
have most of the pieces of the puzzle in place to make this happen
using the "Chirp" mechanism in MyDLV.

Using the existing methods, this requires an attendee to jump through
a few hoops, such as joining MyDLV and going through the instructions
to send Chirps to a cell phone via SMS. There are cook-book style
instructions on how to do this, but those are hoops to be jumped and
these hoops are indeed barriers to widespread use.

Some people do it, though. This year we had something like 17 phones
on the "chirp" list (about 11% of the gang) and we know that it
worked well with the exception of phones on one particular carrier.

This snippet of the log shows some of what it was used for and what
it can be used for:

+ Apr 22, 2012 7:48 PM CDT From: Densie To: All We're leaving the IP
+ for Artisan in a few minutes, have an empty seat or two.

+ Apr 22, 2012 8:03 PM CDT From: Sue Leighton To: All If you are
+ coming to Magaritaville, parking is full at the Flamingo and they
+ are redirecting everyone to Bill's or Bally's.

+ Apr 22, 2012 10:18 PM CDT From: Annie To: All: All Margaritaville
+ is a total clusterf*ck tonight! We're split up all over the place!

Ironically, we received the second message above just after we had
(successfully) parked in the Flamingo garage. :) :)

We've also discussed the message that was sent out when the lunch
at the Artisan ran long, and how all who subscribed to the service
except one on a particular carrier got the message promptly. :)

We already (attempt to) capture the attendees' phone numbers at
activity sign-up time. This past year, close to 100 willingly gave
them. My guess is that all but a few of them will be SMS (text
message) capable.

I'm thinking along the line that a simple checkbox, along with the
cell phone number, that will indicate that the attendee is willing
to receive relevant DLV text messages, is something we can try.

I'm thinking that we can handle most of the reluctance to this by
explicitly stating a date/time when DLV messages will be turned on
and turned off.

2. Katie's suggestion is wonderfully simple and do able.

The first line would be the person's name and second line DLV # X. That
eliminates the need for color coding, and as DocRobbySherry put it get
rid of the "Name the First Time DLVer" Contest, which wasn't even a
contest but I know what she was trying to say. I myself would love to
see my name and the #'d DLV I've attended. Being a veteran DLVer, it
would be my badge of honor (or dishonor whichever way you want to view
it) and I would not mind if other gals saw that and came up to me to ask
for help with anything regarding DLV.

Laughlin River Run:

DocRobbySherry writes:

I'm wondering what the "Loughlin River Run" is and why it's so relevant
to the DLV?
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

The Laughlin River Run is a large motorcycle rally and the largest
recurring event in Laughlin, NV, which has a normal population of
about 7500. In recent years it's attracted 50,000-60,000 bikers.

The reason it's relevant to DLV is that it effectively "locks out"
anyone who works in the Laughlin/Bullhead City/Lake Mohave area.

Because of the overwhelmingly large crowds, few employers in the
area allow any time off during the week of the Laughlin River Run,
which will occur April 24 - 28 in 2013.

It's been cited in feedback since the early years of DLV, both for
difficulty of attending and bikers present in Las Vegas before,
after, and sometimes during the event.

The timing of the Laughlin River Run is one of countless factors
that those of voting status can consider when casting their votes.

Thank you Gina and Ginger, that was sweet. I too will be hoping that
DLV will not be the same week as the Laughlin Run. For my attending,
week two is the worst. Anytime other is OK.

Other date comments:

Rosada writes:

We have nothing that conflicts with any of the three date candidates for
DLV 2013. However, my personal preference would be the week of April
21-26.

Katie writes:

1. Sunday, April 14 thru Friday, April 19. This one works best for me.
As Ginger said already,The River Run is week 2 and for me week 3 would
be difficult to work with.... So week 1 is my preferred week.

Sarah writes:

I like the week of April 14th best as it has no obvious conflicts with
anything else in my world right now. But I should be available for
either of the other two, I think, maybe.

Pamela writes:

Hi

Option number one is best for me April 14 to 19th.

Thanks

Delaney writes:

I did some random checking, and to the extent it is meaningful this far
out, it would appear that hotel rates are lower in the second and third
weeks, rather than the week of the 14th. However, I can make any of the
three weeks.
