Org List:

This is the DLV 2012 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Good and bad news:

First, the bad news ...

For those who have not heard, we lost a good friend and loyal DLV
volunteer this past weekend. :(

Mardi Marlowe passed away last Saturday following a sudden stroke.

Mardi has had perfect attendance at DLV since the early 2000s and
has been an active volunteer each year since 2006.

Wheels are turning in the direction of something to memorialize
Mardi this coming DLV, but plans are not final.

Danielle's write-up, including a link to a suggested memorial,
appears here:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/mydlv/mainforum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2278

For those who may be uncertain as to which face goes with the name,
Mardi's MyDLV gallery is on line here:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/mydlv/mainforum/mygallery.php?u=122
. . . . . . . . . .

The good news is that we appear to be "go" in just about every
department!

This is a very long mailing, as there are many things happening.

The big item is the roll-out of Activity Sign-up this coming week.

Depending on the need, there may be one more ORG mailing prior to
activity sign-up roll-out. Please watch your inboxes closely as
the weekend approaches.

If you sent in anything and did not get a response or do not see
at least a reference to it here, please send in a reminder.
. . . . . . . . . .

Numbers game:

As of Thursday morning our registered headcount stands at 190.
Of these, the Magic Machine says that 160 will show. Looking ahead,
this translates to a turnout either about the same or slightly
larger than last year.

After we're a couple weeks into activity sign-up, we'll be able to
do some more accurate actual show-up predictions.
. . . . . . . . . .

Credit where credit is due:

Hopefully we have all updates on Coordinators and assistants in
place. Please double-check the listings below.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
JoAnn's Thoughts:

The program schedule is "jam packed" and quite varied.

Thank you all.

This just doesn't happen.... it is the MAGIC each of you brings to the
Diva Gathering, and again this year!

You are the DIVAs of the Year.

I look forward to personally thanking each of you when I see you come
the week of April 22.

JoAnn

Activity sign-up:

First of all, big thanks to those who stepped forward to pick up
loose ends and to pinch hit! We're looking very good, actually.

We're at the point in our cycle when everything that needs some
kind of a hoop-jump or headcount needs to be solid, and the
drop-dead absolute hard-stop deadline is this Sunday, April 1.

THIS IS THE LAST CALL FOR ANY ACTIVITY NEEDING A SIGN-UP!

All requested edits to the sign-up screen have been made. If you
sent in corrections or additions, please use our test attendee's
screen for a proof-read, which is on line here:

http://www.geekbabe.com/cgi-bin/dlv/dlv2012hc.cgi?DO NOT USE

(This test attendee's data will be removed in about two weeks.)

We'll be testing out activity sign-up with a test mailing to those
of you on the ORG list. This will be done either later today or on
Friday. Most of you on the ORG mailing list should receive this.
If you don't, please be assured that it's not a snub. Most likely
reason is that the e-mail address on your DLV registration does not
match what's used on the ORG list here.

Please consider this a live "for real" test. Go ahead and sign up
for what you wish to do. We'll be testing and shaking down the back
end in the background.

If there are any significant changes between now and the official
roll-out, we'll note them clearly in next week's mailing.
. . . . .

Any additional activities added after this Sunday will need to be
on a "no-sign-up just show up" basis. Most timeslots do have room
for additional smaller and special-interest things.
. . . . .

Now, let's talk about those things we're asked not to schedule but
just to mention "in case somebody is interested" and the like.

We have a full and rich schedule this year. We also have a lot of
information and material which we're sending out to our people the
week prior to the event.

We have to draw the line somewhere, we need to focus on what we
have planned, and we don't want to use our resources to replicate
what is available in any tourist magazine or in flyers at any
concierge desk.

Here are the guidelines we used last year to decide what to schedule,
what to mention, and what to leave as an exercise for the student. :)

If it's something that occurs at a particular time and place (show,
attraction, activity), and it's important enough to mention, then
it's important enough to schedule and have, at minimum, a volunteer
on site to welcome the others. If not, then it's not. :)

If it's a general discount or promotion, aimed specifically at DLV,
we do have a "Discounts and Promotions" section in our Large Final
Mailing for things like this.

We also have our Big List of merchants, vendors, and venues of all
types, which people can use if they are in need of something to do.
(Is your favorite merchant or vendor in there?)

So, please, if you think it's important enough to mention to our gang,
please consider it important enough to schedule, and please consider
volunteering to coordinate it.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Concerns about contact:

Sabrina writes:

I might say that getting in contact with folks has always been
problematic in the past.

Can we fix that somehow? Am I missing something? Is there somewhere,
where everyone's contact info is and I just don't know about it, if so
please forgive me of my ignorance, and let me know where it is please!
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

You do have a very valid point.

And no, you're not missing anything.

Since DLV is very much a distributed event with no mandatory
attendance and the attendees are staying anywhere and everywhere
in the Las Vegas area, there's really no common touch-base location.

We don't have the funds for a common facility, and even if we did
we're so spread out that it would not be convenient to many attendees.
This is beside the issue of getting volunteers to staff such a
facility.

There is a need to provide timely in-real-time basic information
and such, and over the past several years we've done that by listing
two or more designated contact persons, one of which has always been
a local call from Las Vegas. These people will have the most complete
list of coordinator and attendee contact information that we have,
which in actuality will be far from complete.

Over the past few years we've been asking for Coordinator's phone
numbers, and our track record is that about 60% of the Coordinators
provide them and allow, at minimum, the designated contact people
to phone them for urgent DLV business.

(Due to the length of this mailing, the list of people who are on
file and not on file and the reminder to send in numbers has been
held off until next week.)

Last year we started asking for cell phone numbers on activity
sign-up and we had a fair response. We're encouraging this again
this year.

In our community, many people are understandably shy about giving
out contact information. This extends to DLV, both for Coordinators
and rank and file attendees.

I think the best we can do is to encourage all Coordinators to
please, at least, allow the designated contact people to have
your phone number in case there is a need to get in touch.

JoAnn's Tuesday evening:

Walt writes:

I would be willing and happy to be JoAnn's volunteer for her tuesday
mystery evening (I am presuming she is speaking of an after dinner
timeslot)...
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Walt!

We'll consider this to be a Done Deal! :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Pizza at Metro:

Holly writes:

I will be happy to host(ess) a dinner on Tuesday, 7:00 PM. The venue
will be Metro Pizza (it's the best in Las Vegas), 1395 East Tropicana
Avenue, Las Vegas, Nevada. This is a mainstream location located at
Maryland Parkway and Tropicana (near UNLV). If Pizza isn't your thing
don't worry, they have some pasta dishes as well as sandwiches and
salads. Dress - casual to business attire (you would feel out of place
in a gown or club wear). Hope this fill up part of the Tuesday hole.

Holly
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks Holly!

This rounds out our Tuesday evening schedule nicely.

We'll mark it "Sign-up requested for headcount" unless you say to
do it otherwise.

Now the Big Burning Question. Do you want a Happy Hour in a nearby
location at 6:00pm? Crown And Anchor is right across the street from
Metro and Goodtimes is just a few blocks away. Please let us know.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Namaste dining:

Valorie writes:

I can take over the Namaste dinner if you still need a hostess. I held
back because I haven't hosted an event before, but this is my 3rd DLV
and I ate at Namaste last year so I have a pretty good idea what would
be involved.

I will be arriving at DLV on Sunday and leaving on Wednesday so I would
be fine with the current Tuesday slot and location.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Valorie. This is a fairly easy one.

We have it down as "Sign-up requested" and if you want that changed,
please let us know.

Also, we have Happy Hour down for Crews'n (a couple blocks to the east
on Sahara) at 6:00pm. If you want to change the HH venue, let us know.

. . . . . . . . . . .

Rosada continues:

Checking on the internet I came across this place. Could be a possible
place to meet before Marrakech dinner. It is down the road from
Marrakech. Have any of the LV gals been there? Is it okay? Is it a place
we could hang out for Happy Hour and then drive up the road to the
Marrakech?

Feedback, graciously accepted.

+8 1/2 Ultra Lounge and Piranha Nightclub

+(702) 791-0100
+4633 Paradise Rd (East Naples Dr)
+Las Vegas, NV 89109
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

Is 8 1/2 still open? Last I knew there was nothing open in that
building.

If you want some Happy Hour suggestions, there are several places
that will be closer to Restaurant Row. Most obvious is the bar at the
Firefly in the same complex as Marrakech. There is a separate bar
entrance and it is very "safe" even for beginners.

A couple other options, both which I've used for stand-alone Happy
Hours, are the Hard Rock Cafe (the bar at the cafe, not the casino)
a few blocks south of Marrakech on Paradise, and The Buffalo, for a
quieter and more informal setting. That's down by Milano's and where
8 1/2 is or was.
. . . . . . . . . .

Rosada continues:

Since the dinner outing at Marrakech is going to be a very unique and
total entertainment experience held in a traditional Moroccan Tent
setting, complete with teak inlaid tables in a room encircled by low
couches surrounded by walls lined by richly colored tapestries and
lustrous brassware, we will dine on delicious 6 course Moroccan food
served in the unique Moroccan manner enhanced by beautiful performing
belly dancers, I would feel more comfortable if this were a "Sign Up
Required" activity. Let's make the cut off to sign up at an even dozen.
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

We have Marrakech down for sign-up required, and we'll add a note
saying sign-up closes April 17 and no cancellations after April 17.

Full sign goes up at a turnout prediction of 12.
. . . . . . . . . .

Rosada continues:

Also, FYI...Looking for another thing to do on Tuesday evening after
dinner. Tuesday night is Hookah Tuesday beginning at 10:00 p.m. It's a
Hookah Party and they have live DJ and appetizers and drinks. So if, you
don't wish to experience the Moroccan dinner there is always the Hookah
Party. Check out the menu for Hookah Tuesday appetizer and drink prices
at

www. marralechvegas.com
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

Let's then add Hookah Night as a separate schedule item to catch any
who, as you say, don't want to dine but may want to party.

That actually rounds out Tuesday evening quite nicely. Thanks.

FISM:

Rosada writes:

> Rosada, for Fantastic Indoor Swapmeet, do you want the gang to

Let's plan on meeting there at the swapmeet. I'll be at the main
entrance holding a DLV sign.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Rosada. We'll add that to the notes. We'll note the west
(larger) entrance as there is one on the east side as well.

 From the Good News department:

Beverly writes:

Great news! I will be coming to DLV!!

It looked like I wasn't going to be able to swing it and cancelled
back in January but I am definitely coming. I have made my plane
reservations, booked my room at the IP, even got my rental car lined
up.

So now I will ask where you need my help. At one time Alanna was hoping
I could help with the Friday evening BB event and I would love to do
that again if she still wants my help. Let me know where else I could be
of service.

I am planning on the golf outing as well as the Phantom of the Opera
night out. I can help with the Red Rock Canyon walk and provide
transportation. And I would like to attend the luncheon for volunteers
as well.

Looking forward to seeing everyone and excited about attending this
year's event.
. . . . . . . . . .

Welcome back, Beverly! Great news!

Yes, we'll put you back as Bahama Breeze assist. Please keep in
touch with Alanna and "learn the ropes", as we'll be in need for
someone to take the lead on this next year.

As to what else you can do, we'll ask you to please stand by in
case we have a volunteer who has to bow out at short notice. This
has happened to us a few times over the years and in a couple
cases we were scrambling to take up the slack! :)

Mob Bar and Firefly:

Marisa writes:

I would like the Mob Bar and FF dinners to be sign-up requested, having
names helps me to get to know people better. The Mob Museum is a self
guided tour, not a guided tour.
. . . . . . . . . .

Done.

Also noted on the sign-up screen that Mob Museum is a self-guided tour.

High Tea payment:

Marilyn writes:

Since the High-Tea is Thursday afternoon and the Four Seasons requires
an accurate head count 72-hours in advance, the deadline is Monday at
2PM for payments.

Unfortunately this is before the Welcome Celebration and could prove a
hindrance to some. Therefore I would like to change the payment
instructions box to be similar to the Golf instructions and read as
follows:

"The cost for the High-Tea will be $40. This covers the tax and
gratuities.

Payment must be by NOON on Monday April 24th. Payment should be made by
Paypal to dm-ahern_at_cox.net. You do not need to be member of Paypal to
pay. You may do a one-time payment with a credit card or VISA/MC debit
card. Paypal https://www.paypal.com/ (the link will open in a new
window). This has ben verified as a legitimate Paypal link. If you can
not pay by Paypal then payment must be to Marilyn or Danielle by Monday
at Noon.

All questions or concerns regarding the High-Tea or High-Tea payment
should be made directly to Marilyn via e-mail at ah_marilyn_at_yahoo.com."
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks Marilyn.

Please check the verbiage on the sign-up screen to be sure. :)

that you can't find anywhere else in the world. Don't pass up the
karaoke!

Hike update:

Sabrina writes:

Update on the Hike to Red Rock Canyon. Got in touch with Gabi who
forwarded to me an email Bob sent to her, stating he was no longer
capable of doing the Hike and was planning on Canceling it. We, (Gabi
and I) are going back to our original plan of having the Hike to Red
Rock Canyon Tuesday Morning as originally planned. So please change the
day back to Tuesday morning. Please put Gabi down as the Hostess and I
will Co-hostess with her. I will also be driving to the hike. People

Hi. I'm going to start off the bar crawl at Goodtimes at 8:30 on
Tuesday.

If a volunteer is still needed for the Namaste dinner option Tuesday,
I'll also do that. If I understand correctly contact has been made?

Thanks, Nikki.

Got the location for the Bar Crawl on the schedule.

Valorie has volunteered to take over Namaste, but you can arm-wrestle
her for the privilege if you wish. :)

Can you dig it:

Holly writes:

Who doesn't like to play in the dirt? I have been working with a
company here in Las Vegas called Dig This. They offer the opportunity
"get dirty" in their giant sandbox operating heavy equipment
(bulldozers, excavators, etc.).

Early on there was a scheduling conflict during Diva week that precluded
scheduling an actual event. That conflict recently resolved but I think
it is too late to schedule an actual event. So, to introduce the concept
to DLV, I have negotiated a ten percent discount off their $249 Big Dig
(making it $224) that will be valid anytime starting the weekend Diva
begins (April 20) through the weekend it ends (April 29).

Reservations can (and should) be made prior to Diva week. I am attaching
a PDF document that is a flyer that has the code on it for our group
(divalv). Their phone number, which regrettably is not on the flyer, is
(702) 222-4344.

They are located on Rancho about a half a mile south of the Palace
Station. They know our group is TG and welcome our business. Fully
half their clientele are women. (That surprised me a little.) I
thought maybe the PDF could of out on the DISC list. Here is a link to
their website. http://www.digthis.info/

I also have a limited number of coupons for even deeper discounts ($100)
but they have to be booked and used within 24 hours. If anyone is
interested in those they can let me know and I can make arrangements to
either give them at the Welcome Celebration or if I run out tell them
where they can pick them up (airport or location on the strip). By the
way, this coupon book has several offers in it from discounts at Macy's
at the Fashion Show Mall to 2 for 1 show tickets, helicopter tours,
skydiving, fighter plane flying and a whole bunch of other stuff. And
it's small enough to fit in your purse or pocket.

I could see this as a full-fledged event for DLV next year if there is
interest. maybe a treasure hunt to locate a buried jewelry box using
heavy equipment. Or an SO vs. partners contest stacking 1000 pound
tires. Or??? I think it could be a lot of fun.

I thought this would be a good introduction of the concept and an
opportunity to gage the interest level while offering our attendees a
chance to do something really different. I am a little concerned about
the price point and that's what I want to see. it there is enough
interest. I know if I can show them I can bring 10-15 people (or more)
I can reduce the price. I think this would be a good test and no risk.

Comments? Thoughts?
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

Well, uh, I will say that this is a great example of out-of-the-box
thinking. :) And, if I may speak freely, an innovative idea of how
to get some return on what would otherwise be idle and depreciating
heavy construction equipment.

As you say, the price point is very steep! Much higher than a top
line show ticket. My gut feeling is that the price alone is going
to preclude a meaningful participation.

No, It's not too late to put it on the schedule. It would fit in
any morning or afternoon. If you want a sign-up or a headcount and
you can give us a timeslot by Sunday morning, we can get it on the
sign up screen. If you don't want a sign-up, it can be scheduled at
any time.

If we just list it in the "Discounts And Promotions" section, (and
yes, this is a good example of what could go in there) with no
plans for a specific day and time, it's not very likely that there
will be a meaningful number of participants. We do have it listed,
though.

Please let us know how to proceed.

Boneyard and EHM:

Sarah writes:

I reviewed and tested the signup for the Boneyard tour and it looks
fine and works well. No problems observed or encountered in the sign
up information or the link to the Neon Museum site.

The response from the Neon Museum includes an air photo that shows
the location of parking and check in locations as well as detailed
directions to the site.

- and -

EHM - I just checked with them and the only thing we need to add is
a notice that this is an activity for those 18 years of age and older.

I don't think this is a problem with our group, but it will save a
little disappointment if we have an attendee younger than that.

The bar will be set up and I've heard back from someone who attended
a function there that the prices are reasonable. I don't know what that
means, but they should be considerably less than, say, the prices at
Charles Bar :-). They will check id and provide wrist bands for those
21 and older who would like to purchase alcohol, but that's something
that can go in the LFM.

I will be doing a couple of things to encourage additional donations
to the EHM during the activity, ranging from a "tip jar" to a raffle
or door prize. I'll try to keep it low key and nothing will be
mandatory beyond the basic admission and the requirement to have a
good time.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Sarah.

I can't seem to find a link or the info for the Neon Museum. Do you
have the direct link?

As for EHM, we'll note that it's 18 and over only, but that's kind
of a moot point. We don't allow those under 18 to register for DLV
on advice of counsel obtained over a decade ago. At last check, we
don't have anyone under 21. We've been watching it closely this year,
since Drink And Drag (Welcome Celebration) is strictly 21 and over.

As you'll see from the schedule, the EHM has become a defacto third
single-track activity, since nobody has volunteered to sponsor any
other activities in that timeslot. This means that you'll be getting
any and all DLVers who want to do something with the DLV group that
evening, quite possibly up to 100 or even more. We've added notes
to both the activity and venue screens that parking may be limited.

As activity sign-up gets underway, we'll be able to give you more
accurate projections.

Also, we know there are others working on this project besides you,
but we don't have them listed. Please give us the names of those
assisting on this project, so they get credit by mention, as well
as credit toward voting status.

LaCage:

Sabrina writes:

Hi, just some new info, or at least new to me... La Cage has just
recently re-opened at their original venue, the Riviera! Their show
is at 7:30, they are dark on Tuesdays. If anyone is interested in
going let me know I will probably go one night the week of Diva's.
Price is $44.95 This was the original show that launched Frank
Marino's career in Vegas. Not sure how many of the original cast is
still in the show.
. . . . . . . . . .

Too bad this is dark Tuesday, since it would be a good lower-priced
show to have in there.

This would be a good reasonably-priced second-track option for
Wednesday (if you want to go up against EHM) or Thursday, since
the second-track option is a bit spendy, or even Sunday. Please
let us know if you want to get this on the schedule. If you want
a headcount, we'll need the timeslot by this Sunday. If not, we
can schedule it anytime.
