Org List:
This is the DLV 2012 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg_at_geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.

Lots of progress - Thanks:
Early and rather lengthy mailing this week, but quite appropriate
as many things are happening and progress is significant.
All Coordinators please note various non-specific and specific
volunteers in this mailing and previous mailings. If you need any
help, please reach out to those who are actively volunteering. If
you need any contact information, please write in and let us know.
Likewise, if you would like to volunteer to assist anyone who
needs help, please feel free to reach out and if you need any
contact information, yell.
Big thanks to all who have stepped forward to make DLV 2012 all
it can be! :)
. . . . .
Thanks to those who volunteered to be Big Sisters. You can help
Nora out with this if you'll fill out the Big Sister Volunteer
Questionnaire on the web. Just go back to your registration
screen (follow the link that was sent to you right after you
registered - if you misplaced it, write and we will resend) and
click on the Big-Little Sister button.

A new addition to the ORG mailing this week is a Coordinator list
for our scheduled activities.
A few weeks ago, JoAnn suggested that we include the names of the
Coordinators on the working schedule in the ORG mailings. Well,
I (Annie) gave it the good old college try, but there simply is
not enough "real estate" on each line to do this. So, the listing
of Coordinators has been broken out and will appear at the bottom
of the schedule.
This is to recognize those whose efforts are making our event what
it is, to raise awareness of who is coordinating what, and to be
sure we do not have errors and omissions in giving credit where
credit is due.
Yes, it's machine-generated, so if something looks a bit wonky,
it is. :)
All Coordinators, please check this listing to be sure that your
activities are in it and you and your assistants are properly
listed.
Because this was in the works last week, some may have noticed
that the copy of the working schedule in the ORG mailing was
out of date. This was in error and should not happen again.

Opening Thoughts:
The group which has volunteered to coordinate the DLV 2012
Welcome Celebration has a proposal for the consideration of
the ORG group here, which appears at the end of this secion.
Big thanks to all for the comments and feedback on this.

Hi All.
I suspect if we stay with what has already worked well then The
Artisan would be the best option and as we won't have to arrange
food which probably means pre payment,
I would imagine that it will be much simpler to organize too. When
the Artisan goes on our back burner then we should look at something
new but all indications and reports say that it was a huge success
last year.
I realize that the Artisan parking isn't the best situation but I
usually take a cab anyway when I am doing anything like this where
there is drinking involved. Downtown parking isn't the best situation
either especially if you don't know the ropes and the general area.
I would like to make a suggestion that we use **Cab pooling** or car
pooling, Either from a central spot, (Which has worked well in the
past for some events) or Even make one or two stops along the way to
pick up others, Vivian and I did this last year and shared a cab when
assisting with the Limo Tour and it worked very well for us both as
we arrived at Caesars at the same time and didn't have to stand around
alone waiting for each other to arrive on such a windy evening as that
was.. I will likely be doing this again for the events which I attend
with anyone who wants or needs to share a cab.

Sabrina writes:
.. a comment on the opening ceremony bash. I really didn't like the
artisan last year mostly do the dinning screw up, the bar is nice and it
seems to be hang out for a lot of our gurls so I am sure most everyone
will be happy there.
I am not in favor of "Drink & Drag" mostly because of the catered food
option. I have yet to ever have good food at a catered event that was
actually worth the price it costs. I also think that we do need group
dinning for the opening celebration since its one of only two times we
get to see the whole group together, and dinning together is always a
good opportunity to meet new people and see returning friends.
. . . . .
Holly writes:
As to the Welcome Celebration, if it is to be held at the Artisan this
year, I will pass. The parking is atrocious, the food overpriced and
over-rated, the service slow, and quite frankly, they do not have the
facilities to handle a group our size. This was pretty evident last
year.
The idea of having QST (quality social time) just does not work in an
environment where we can't all be together in one place. Perhaps we are
victims of our own success, having outgrown many of the places that
worked for us in the past. I do not know about Drink 'N Drag... I hope
to check them out sometime next week.
I know there has been high resistance in the past to having a door
charge to attend. Maybe it is time to revisit this if that is the only
way we are going to have to get everyone together in one place at the
same time. Perhaps our vendors would fund such a place or at least
contribute to the cost... food for thought. Personally, I believe the
social aspect of DLV is highly important. As one of the two official
maximum attendance events, we should do everything in our power to
provide the best time that we can. We are billed as a vacation, not a
conference. Well, vacations are not free and I for one do not think it
is unreasonable to expect a modest contribution from all who attend.
Since we are brainstorming, here's another thought... how about the
opener at the EHM? It's big enough. If there is going to be a liquor
license obtained anyway, we're half way there. If food is important, we
could cater something. I have worked with a caterer in the past for the
Murder/Mystery.
Okay, I've probably said more than I should. Signing out.

I liked Artisan. Their wine list didn't impress me, but the "Calamari
Foutu", as Tony calls it, is excellent, and you can't beat the decor.
. . . . .
Alexis writes:
For me, I would prefer the Welcome Celebration to be more of a nicer
event than a casual event, because I rarely get to wear a nice pretty
dress out to an event. So that makes me lean towards an Artisan WC. I
think bowling would be fun, but maybe a different night that would be
more casual. I guess I just want as many opportunities to get dolled up
as possible, and let's be honest, what girl doesn't like getting all
dolled up? Anyway, my 2 cents.
. . . . .
Danielle writes:
As for the Welcome Celebration, a tough call, based on what we
know. While we still have time, I think we need to proceed rapidly
down the track on both venues, and see what emerges, and whether a
decision becomes self-evident.
Although one option might be to do the Artisan again, and do Drag
Bowling another night during the week, after dinner. The venue sounds
like just, simply too much fun to pass up.
. . . . .
Walter writes:
With regard to the options for the welcome celebration, although I have
not yet attended a full/complete DLV, I would like to vote for Artisan
and the described goal of matching last-years welcome celebration... the
two downtown options sound fun, but Artisan sounds a little better... I
*will* present for whichever is adopted... I like the poolside group
photo as described in-concert with Artisan, as well... and yes, I am
looking-forward to being a part of the group and the photo...
(Note: I am likely to attend church services on Sunday, too...)
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
First, to address some of the comments and concerns.
The option of a catered meal at Drink And Drag is off the table.
The price point is too high and there are concerns both here and
off line about the enjoyability of the food.
I really don't understand the purpose of bringing a door charge to
the Welcome Celebration. If this is to allow us to rent a facility
such as a catering hall or hotel ballroom, the feedback I've heard
consistently for 15 going on 16 years is that's not what our people
want.
Despite the high enjoyment ratings, Artisan simply does not have
the "bandwidth" in the kitchen and serving resources to handle
a group of our size. They really gave it a good try, and we did
what we could to help them out, but in actuality they were at
capacity and falling way behind during the peak.
Both "suitors" (as JoAnn might say) will have parking issues.
Carpooling to the Welcome Celebration, or shared taxi rides, will
help with the parking issues. We can examine this in more detail
as the date approaches.
Dressing up a little bit, or a lot, will be appropriate at either
Artisan or Drink And Drag. "Casual to dressy" has been the dress
suggestion for our Welcome Celebration for several years and will
be again this year regardless of the final venue chosen.
. . . . . . . . . .
What we are proposing is an opening evening centered on downtown
Las Vegas, converging upon Drink And Drag for the main single-track
social portion of the program.
Our volunteers are ready to "pull the trigger" on this, and we
have almost all bases covered.
Dinner will be three options, all of which will occur in the
downtown area. One is in the same building (Neonopolis) as
Drink And Drag.
The main single-track social part of the evening will be at
Drink And Drag with very loosely-defined start and end times.
This will be strictly social, with little structure. Quality
Social Time!
We're thinking of trying a group photo in conjunction with
this toward the end of the social portion of the evening.
There are a few settings in the Neonopolis and Fremont Street
Experience area which would probably work well for a setting.
Following the main social gathering there will be multiple
informal options in the area, including one to simply stay
put at Drink And Drag for more socializing.
This results in a schedule like this:
6:00pm: Happy Hour Options (Downtown area)
Luna Rossa option
Tony Roma's option
tbd option
7:00pm: Dinner Options (Downtown area)
Luna Rossa option
Tony Roma's option
tbd option
8:00pm: Welcome Celebration (Drink And Drag)
10:00pm: Various after-WC options (Downtown)
Bowling (Drink And Drag)
Fremont Street Experience (FSE)
Video/Pinball gaming (Insert Coins)
Quality Social Time (Drink And Drag)
We're hoping that the ORG group will approve this by consensus.
If we don't have a consensus, we'll settle it the old-fashioned
way, we'll vote. :)

Golf update:
Danielle writes:
This is really just an update on golf. We're set with Desert Rose Golf
Course. I've given them a deposit. And I must say, they sound thrilled
to have us back. The cost should be $50/person, which factors in a tip
to the foodservice people for lunch (something we found we needed to
include last year.) Lunch will again be included (with, they tell me, a
few choices, included in the same price) as is green fees, cart and
range balls. A hellofa deal!
One quick question; would you mind forwarding to me the write-up we used
for sign-up last year? I want to make sure it's still current, and I
don't have a copy because, as you know, it was all done on-line.

Yes, this sounds like a great deal.

under separate cover.

stand there all evening without the chance of circulating and dining
with the others. I would really like the opportunity of enjoying
something I coordinated.
It's not a solid deal yet and I'm still negotiating with them, but we
are closer. We could probably use a third greeter as well if anyone
would like a fun little thing to do - everyone has to kiss and hug the
greeter upon entering, it's mandatory.
Please get back to me on this, Katie, and anyone else.

Costume activity:
DocRobbySherry writes:
Just curious, has DLV ever considered a costumed event? Where either a
dressing theme, or costumes in general, for a gathering/dinner were
suggested/allowed? I realize finding a proper venue would be crucial.
There was such an event my first year at SCC and some of the girls came
up with some amazing looks! The evening was a total hoot! I also realize
this is too late to organize for this year. Maybe in the future? Any
history of such at past DLVs?
. . . . . . . . . .
Annie responds:
We've had a few "theme" evenings, all which worked to one extent
or another, with theme dressing always being optional.
Red Shoe Night worked rather well. Secretaries Night didn't seem
to really catch on. Retro Night at Elvis' maybe had 20% or so of
the participants in some kind of an outfit which might be considered
retro.
No, it's not too late to organize something this year!
Preliminary plans were in the works for a prom/formal theme
activity this coming year, but due to an unfortunate incident,
those particular plans were scrapped. :( They could, of course,
be resurrected if someone takes the ball and runs with it.
If you're interested in sponsoring some kind of a costume thing
this year, we still have a number of places on the schedule where
it would fit, depending on what size of an activity you have in
mind.
Tuesday would be best for a smaller affair, as one of the evening
options.
Wednesday might work for a smaller affair, but you would be up
against a Big Gun (EHM) which does have a relaxed dress code.
A larger affair would work as a second-track option against the
Limo Tour, but again, you would be up against another "dress up"
activity.
. . . . . . . . . .
DocRobbySherry continues:
Also, I would like to volunteer to assist at event(s) that may be
suitable for myself or Sherry to attend. Not the opening or closing
events, please.
U may pass my email address on to anyone who may need help.

Marrakech Moroccan Restaurant:

Dennis and I were thinking of hosting a dinner at Marakech Restaurant
for whatever night you want to place it on the schedule. This restaurant
offers a 6 course meal with belly dancing for entetainment. You sit on
cushions and they wash your hands before dinner with rose water. It may
be price for some but I think it would offer an unique experience for
those that have done the Tea and the Limo ride. I've sent the link to
Marrakech so you can read more about it.

. . . . . . . . . . .
Thanks Rosada.
As to when it would fit best on the schedule, that depends on
what size of a dining group you want.
If you want a smaller group (10-15 max), Tuesday or perhaps Sunday
would be options for you. If you want a medium-size group (up to
25-30 or so), Sunday would work, or else Thursday against Trevi.
Please let us know what size of group you're planning on and your
preference for evening. All three are open as of this time.

Big Sister and Security:
Katie writes:
I have never been a Big sister but would like to some day. Hopefully if
a new T friend decides to do DLV 2012 I will be doing my own version of
it this year.
I was wondering that with all the security issues that most upscale
hotels and even the lesser ones have too as in (posting a security guard
at the elevator foyers). How do you get past the security people when
being a big sister and not having a Hotel key to produce to gain access
to the elevators? Is this a relatively simple task or a more involved
one?
I know this may sound like a silly question for those in the know but I
have reservations about this and wondered how our more polished girls
handle such an issue.
Please let me know as I am so much looking forward to helping a new girl
out and making sure she gets to an event or two safely and in good
spirits.
. . . . . . . . . .
The topic of the security guards at the room elevators has been
a minor annoyance to DLVers over the years. Some newcomers have
reported that yes, they were spooked by the guards.
Throughout our years, we have no cases on record where one of our
people was in any way hassled or detained by any of these guards.
The good news is that as the time from 9/11 increases with no
more similar incidents, many of the hotels are dropping this or
scaling it back to the later hours only.
The trick used by the hook^H^H^H^Houtcall entertainers is to
acquire an old key for the hotel and simply flash it to the
guard, if there is one. :) There's speculation on the Las Vegas
chat boards that there's a lot of "nudge-nudge wink-wink" if
not blatant con$ideration in this. :)
I can relate to you what the guard at the old Stardust (which
was one hotel where the guard actually ran the room key through
a card reader to test validity) said the proper procedure was
for allowing a guest to the room. He said that at their hotel,
the proper way was for the hotel guest to meet their visitors
at the security podium and escort them up. He said that when
an outside guest came to the podium and wanted up, they would
point the visitor to the house phone and tell them to have the
hotel guest come down and escort them up.
The Sahara was far more easy-going with it. In 2004, as things
were starting to relax from 9/11, we had a vendor who rented a
suite at the Sahara, and at the time the Sahara was randomly
posting guards at the podiums (podia?) at various hours both
day and night. I told our vendor that I would talk to them and
see what the procedure was to allow the guests up to the suite.
The guard I spoke to was very cooperative. He said that all an
outside guest had to do was to say they were visiting someone
in room such-and-such and they would usually let them up, but
sometimes the guard would phone up to the room in case things
looked hinky.
I then explained that some of our people may be a bit shy and
spooked by the guard, etc., and he said he would watch out for
anyone who "fit the description" :) and motion them on through.
So, either acquire a key somewhere, have your Little Sister meet
you and escort you up, or, if possible, sweet-talk your way past
the guard explaining that you are visiting room such and such.

I would love to work with someone local to explore a hiking option for
Wednesday. If anyone would like to work with me on this please contact

Good news for you on the Glamour Boutique. You have two other
volunteers who are battling each other for the privilege of
host(ess)ing such an activity. :)
For Mexican dining, last year we had a medium-size group at
Chapalas on Eastern and it was well-rated. There are countless
others, with varying degrees of authenticity, both in the
hotels and off-Strip.
We'll put this on the schedule pending your selection of a
venue.
As for hiking in the region, Red Rock Canyon comes to mind
immediately, but there are others. Bob was interested in doing
a recreational hiking thing but it never got off the ground.
Maybe you and Bob can team up and form a plan. This would be
a good daytime activity for almost any day, but historically, the
"outdoorsy" and out of town things work better toward the beginning
of the DLV week.

I will also figure out a time and evening for "An evening at La Cage" as

perhaps opposite the Limo tour would be good.
Also I will be glad to be a big sister, for pre, during or even post

. . . . . . . . . .
Thanks ladies.
It appears that nobody is jumping up and down volunteering to do
anything as a second-track option opposite EHM. This is quite
understandable since EHM will be very popular and has a large
capacity. EHM may very well end up being a single-track activity
by virtue of the fact that most everybody wants to attend and
nobody wants to plan anything against it.
Thursday would be a good evening for a show as a second-track
option opposite the Limo Tour, as the Limo Tour does have a
limited capacity. However if Katie is to assist, that will not
work.
Tuesday would also work. The after-dinner timeslot is wide open
and a show, particularly a reasonably-priced show would be a
very good fit.
Please let us know what you decide.

They make note that room rates in general are still very good.
+Our canvassing for the upcoming three months shows off-the-rack

Our in-house TA got me a great "Corporate Rate" at Bally's for

I will be doing the IP karaoke bar, but that's not particularly
friendly. There is a very professional gentlemen who does a karaoke
show at Crews'n, if he's still there, and if Bob and Susan are doing
the talent show, I'd like to make it to that this time.
There was a scheduling problem last year, more accurately put, a
stupid mistake on my part.
Anyhoo, I will see if I can find contact info for Crews'n. Maybe
they have email or a website? I could set it up in advance, then
if something happens and I can't make it, the show will still go
