Secret Cabaret status:

Can somebody who is in the know about local clubs please let
us know if the Secret Cabaret is open or closed? We've received
a report that it has closed, but cannot confirm it. We need to
remove it from the Big List if it has closed. Thanks.

DCR comments:

Annie writes:

>Michael at DCR is willing to work with us,

This does indeed look promising. I'm sure he needs business and
appreciates us considering his venue.

>but the big "but" is we would need to provide extra help to
>newbies and the intimidated individuals for maximum attendance,
>because of parking and access.

I see this (access and parking) as an issue with both the DCR
and Artisan options, and we'll need to do what we can to help
out with the situation no matter which one of these, if either,
we go for.

We can work out the details when a decision is made since the
logistics will be different between the two options.

>To cover the cost of bringing in extra people etc, he would
>need a contract with maybe $1000 minimum spent on drinks.

I think such a figure is reasonable and realistic. He does
not want to take a bath, and he's being far more realistic
than HRC Strip was with us last year. IIRC there was both a
room charge and a minimum with Firefly.

Let's do some initial number-crunching on this, to be prepared
should we go with this option.

The current machine-based projection for in-town attendees on
Monday evening is 135. Historically, projections of this type
are within 10% or so of the actual numbers.

In the past, our successful maximum-attendance activities have
attracted typically 70-80% of our in-town attendees. The past two
Welcome Celebrations have attracted numbers in the 85-90% range.

If we use 70% as an estimate of minimum total attendance, meaning
persons through the door, this gives us a minimum of 95. The
high-side maximum would be around 120 using current numbers.

If 95 people consume an average of only two bar drinks at an
average price of $5, that's $950.000 of the one-kilobuck "nut".

This would be a highly-conservative estimate. 110 people doing
three drinks average would be $1650.00, which would easily
crack the nut and then some.

Of course if we do a "sign-up requested", we can get far more
accurate numbers as the date approaches.

Now ... for those thinking of such a thing as imposing a
minimum to meet the numbers, my gut feeling is that it would
be self-defeating, and that our historical show-up and spending
patterns give us a minimal chance of failing to meet minimum.

>Apps are usually available during HH until 8pm, but he could
>extend that time for us. He gets the apps as take out from a
>very nearby restaurant and sells them at cost.

IMAO, have him mark them up a buck or two and count that $$$
toward the minimum. :) :)

>He considered being open just for us during this time, but I
>think that anyone that would enjoy our company, shares the
>bathrooms and buys drinks to help hit the min. can stay.

If he's willing to count general public bar business toward
our minimum, I say all the better.

>We should get a firm head count on this as I'm uneasy about
>signing the contract.

I'm confident enough of the numbers that I'm willing to
contribute up to $200 toward any shortage, which appears
to be highly unlikely.

IMAO, only something as tragic as 9/11 could jeopardize the
success and the turnout on this.

>If we do the DCR, would it help to move the wed. Fremont event
>to monday?

Probably not. We want our people in the DCR socializing and not
out on the FSE spending their social energy and money elsewhere.
A more intensive FSE experience can be done Wednesday for those
who want it.

A dissenting opinion:

Mardi writes:

Marisa, don't sign the contract, how much is Michael going to
charge for drinks, $1000 for drinks, I guess he does not want
our business.

Artisan and DCR:

Marisa writes (quoted):

>The main issue that probably needs to be delt with at Artisan
>would be parking. I think they valet because of limited space
>and 50-80 vehicles could be a problem. To get max. attendance,
>some kind of shuttle or rideshare from somewhere would be
>needed.

Both of our options will have transportation and parking issues
and I think we'll need to encourage such things as carpooling
and informal ride sharing, even the use of shared taxi rides.

I think that it's a given that we'll have ride sharing from
the Beginner Open House to the WC. That will hopefully catch
a number of the most shy of the newbees.

It may be a Good Thing<tm> to have a few confident drivers
post "Anybody need a lift from {hotel} to the WC?" messages
in the Discussion Forum prior to the big day.

>The dining room and bar area could probably handle 100 and it
>would be cool to hang out with a drink in the loby by the
>fountian as you get a sore neck looking up at the paintings on
>the ceiling.
. . . . .

>Would some dining options at Fremont work and then come together
>(pause for credit due the Beatles) at DCR? We could patronize
>the El Cortez restaurants for the free parking they provide and
>Main Street Station has a buffet or the Triple 7 brew pub with
>free parking.

I think we need to do everything and anything we can to encourage
an absolute maximum turnout for 2-3 hours of Quality Social Time
at the Welcome Celebration, wherever it may be. Everything else,
including food or lack of same needs to take a back seat to the
Quality Social Time.

Any discontinuity means some fall-out. Historically, whenever
we've had a "move" from A to B, it's been such that not everyone
who departs A arrives at B, and therefore we want to have the
Welcome Celebration be A, if there is to be a B. I think that
the WC needs to be the primary "assembly" point for the evening.

Should we go with the DCR option, food is one of the work-arounds
we'll need to consider. Appetizers will help. (I'll often times
make a meal of an "appetizer" basket of chicken fingers and
waffle fries at a local bar.) Another option, if they would
allow it, would be to bring in something like pizza and/or a
deli tray.

If there is to be an organized dining option at a place other
than the WC, I think it needs to be after the WC. Beauty Bar
is not going to hold our entire group, and there are many
dining venues up and down Fremont.

Artisan update:

Cynthia writes:

I got a calllback from bar management late this afternoon and
we're all set up with a solid meeting for 12:00 noonish tomorrow
to discuss all the hoary details.

they are enthueastic about the whole affair but nothing is firm
as yet. Can only get back to you tomorrow

I am absolutely optimistic at this point.

Note to Rosada about the SO brunch at Strat. I've been lunching
at Strat. buffet off and on for years and I can say that it is
absolutely excellent. The Bananas Foster is the best in the world.
