Unfortunately there is nothing new on the horizon that I am
aware of. All venues that I am familiar with have been mentioned.

The Macaroni Grill does not have an area or side room that can
accommodate us. Carluccio's is a good choice but they are closed
on Monday nights.

There are very few places that are large enough and willing to
handle a group our size and in addition must be willing to
provide separate checks and be accessible to us.

After thinking about this, I favor the Downtown Cocktail Lounge
or other such place that will accommodate us.

I hope we keep the opening downtown because that may be the only
time some of us make it down there and its a fun place with a
unique local flavor.

Keeping the opening to cocktails and light bar food as we may
wish to individually order would allow us to mingle better and
see more people. It would also allow us to eat afterwards where
we wish rather than having to suffer the limited options of the
place we are having the opening.

The Bahama Breeze could be a viable last minute fall back
opportunity, but does have some down sides mainly getting there
for someone without a car, mainstream exposure to beginners, and
the usual franchise sameness. There is a Bahama Breeze less than
a block from our Atlanta place, and enough is enough, even with
those wonderful Bahamritas!

As for parking, we rode the bus to downtown and the Fire Fly
last year. The Downtown Cocktail Lounge is on Las Vegas Blvd.
and that would make riding the bus even more convenient. I
always rent a car in Las Vegas, but even with a car, I have
found riding the bus to be more convenient, perfectly safe,
and inexpensive, although the buses can be crowded at times.
The Deuce and Strip and Downtown Express routes run every few
minutes. I know it's not popular to ride the bus, but then a
family member told me once that I was a "person of the people"
because of for my fondness for riding the bus or MARTA (the
Atlanta rail system) when it was convenient. And yes, I rode
MARTA to the airport yesterday!

The food last night was really good and it's obvious Annie has
great taste! (pun intended). As for the weather in Mid America,
there are big snow banks all around the airport and other places!
There is a fine grit every where on the roads, parking lots,
walkways, everywhere! The wind chill factor last night must have
been -5F. Even my hotel room was cold with the large window is
leaking cold air, but then the direction of the 40 MPH wind was
directly against it. Today promises to be better. They claim the
temperature is going to get above freezing and that the wind will
be only 13 MPH. However, snow showers are in the forecast tonight.
It's 27F outside right now! Where I'm from in Tennessee it's 61F
right now and will be warmer before the day is over. The leaves
on the trees are coming out! I retired last year and am thinking
this little consulting job was a mistake! Brrrrrrrrrr!

Reporting from Omaha in Mid-America where its cold and about to
be snowy!

Another venue, possibly?

(Update: I wrote this before Marisa's note came in - Honest!) :)

We may have overlooked this one.

Las Palmas in Commercial Center, where we had our Pre-DLV
gathering last year.

Advantages I see are that it's big enough to handle well
over 100, inexpensive, and my hunch is that they would
offer the full menu with separate checks. It's mainstream
with a capital M and the reports I got last year were that
it was comfortable for newbees as well. It's rated 9.25 for
both satisfaction and comfort on the Big List.

Downsides are that it's noticibly downscale from things like
Firefly, DCR, and Bahama Breeze and there were some concerns
about gang activity in the area. However, this would be on a
Monday (LOL, slow gang night?) and we would be out of there
by 10:00pm or so.

Comments on this one, everybody?

I'm sure Level 107 won't work for WC, but could work for a smaller
event. Eating there is very pricy unless you do the HH (4-7pm
every day, no more ladies night) 1/2 off apps ($5-$8 duck sliders,
regular sliders,etc..) and 2 for 1 certain cocktials.

What about the place we had the saturday pre-DLV gathering at last
year (Las Palmas 953 E.Sahara).

If that gourgeous, singer turns the volume way down, we could
even have some conversation.

I doubt that Artisan would work, it's too small for 100 people.
We had the art tour lunch there and was served very slow, but
new owners are in there now and seem to be doing good.

FYI; Le Caberet at Paris has a DJ 5 nights a week starting at 9pm
and F&S there is a band and DJ starting at 10pm.

Initial mailing/head count:

Beverly writes:

Somewhere something was mention about holding up the initial
mailing requesting headcounts until the WC was finalized.
Instead of holding it up why not send it out with a three
part option along the lines of...

Question: Will you be attending the opening welcoming celebration,
location TBA?

Answer: 1) Yes I will be there. 2) No I will not be attending.
3) My attendance depends on the location.

This will allow for the mailing to continue somewhat on schedule
and also give a preliminary head count.
. . . . . . . . . . .

A three-choice yes/no/depends could be programmed, but it would
require some major surgery on the program part and I really do
not want to do it this late in the cycle unless it's imperative
that it be done.

We do have a "cushion" of about a week, actually somewhat longer
this year, built into the plans, in anticipation of things just
like this, where plans for a major activity are not yet solid,
and for systems issues and such.

As long as we can get activity sign-up launched by the 15th, I
think we'll be in good shape.

I foresee three scenarios as far as what happens WRT activity
sign-up timing:

1. The best situation. We have a venue solid by about Wednesday
of this week at the latest. We do a "sign-up requested" for the
dinner part if we have a meal, or we do a "sign-up requested for
headcount" if we do not.

2. We do a "sign-up requested for headcount" with the venue TBA.
This will give us approximate numbers, and any "if" uncertainty
will be buried in the "noise" that can be expected in any of the
"sign-up requested for headcount" situations.

3. We omit it from sign-up. No sign-up, just show up. This would
be a worst case, if plans do not materialize in 10 days or so, or
if we think we do not need a reasonably accurate headcount.
