This is the DLV 2011 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not

JoAnn's Musings:

We need to celebrate how well the activity planning is proceeding.
Thanks to all of you.

If you have not volunteered and are part of the ORG Group then I ask you
consider stepping forward to share your time and energy to help. This
can be heading an event that still needs a Coordinator, or to help with
an activity that needs an "assist". For example: Annie and I are
doing the "heavy lifting " for the Limo Tour and Katie Smith said she
will help. But we still could have two more people help with the
activity to get the refreshments, dialog on our 'tour stops', and
assist during the Tour with 'herding the cats at each of the Tour's
stops'.

So if there is someone(s) who previously said they would help, please
say so again, please.

And there are---------- several other activities which can use the same
help. And, yes, your volunteering would be most welcomed by the
Activity Coordinator for the activity. Your help would be much
appreciated .

Sharing yourself as a volunteer will be a rewarding experience. Thanks,
in advance, to those will answered the "call".

And a 'special thanks' to those who have already answered the call.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
This Mailing and Weak spot analysis:

This mailing includes items received up to Tuesday morning.
Items received after will appear in the next ORG mailing.
. . . . .

First of all, BIG THANKS! to those who have stepped forward to
help us round out the schedule! As you can see there have been
some significant additions to our activity line-up lately.

We still have some weak spots, and as the schedule fills in
the additional things we need will become more and more
specific.

A special note to those who have tentatively planned things
for Tuesday or Wednesday: Please select timeslots (like NOW),
and if at all possible select a "second choice" evening so we
can balance things as the schedule fills in.

Basic rule of thumb is Tuesday if you're gearing things for
a medium-size activity and Wednesday for a smaller thing,
even though we probably will have some wiggle room here.

See notes on Tuesday and Wednesday immediately below.

Monday evening is now solid and closed to any additional
activities until the conclusion of the Welcome Celebration.
Ditto for Friday evening.

Since we now have two solid medium-size tracks for Thursday,
let's consider that closed for the time being. If we get good
"fills" on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings then we can
consider a third track on Thursday.

And, as yet another reminder, March 6, about three weeks away,
is our hard-stop drop-dead date for the planning of anything
which will need a headcount or a sign-up. Anything planned
after that will need to be no-sign-up-just-show-up.

In keeping with our current emphasis on the evenings, here are
the timeslots on which we must concentrate:

Sunday:

With the proposed items from Susan and Ginger, our weakest
evening is now Sunday.

+Sunday, April 3:
+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour options (various)
+ 6:00pm: Caesars Happy Hour (Caesars) - ms
+ 6:00pm: Paris Happy Hour (Paris) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Dining options (various)
+ 7:00pm: Caesars Buffet Dinner (Caesars) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Mon Ami Gabi dinner (Mon Ami Gabi) - ms

We are in need of one more Happy Hour and Dinner option for
Sunday evening. Better yet, two, but if we have one that is
reasonable in price and can handle a medium-size group, it
will probably be ok. Without anything else the two items
we have will very quickly go into a waiting list state!

Both of these options are somewhat spendy, so a moderately
priced option would be the best fit.

However, that's not our major issue with Sunday.

+ 8:30pm: After-dinner options (various)

This is currently blank!

All: We need comments and feedback regarding our plans for
Sunday evening.

We have discussed having a two-track gathering strategy for
Sunday evening, one mainstream and the other alternative.

I (Annie) have volunteered to coordinate one of these, but
there's been total silence regarding the other. I've also
stated that I'll do the one that the other volunteer does
not want to do, but again, silence! :(

For alternative, suggestions would be either Escape Lounge or
Crewsn. For mainstream, something like Hard Rock Strip or
Margaritaville would be popular and not require that much
busy-work to pull off.

If the two-track mainstream and alternative gatherings are
not what the gang wants, let's please hear alternatives.

I think we need either a balanced set of 2-3 options such as
we had last year, or else a strong anchor activity with some
smaller complimentary things running in parallel.

I would hate to have to designate the prime part of our
very first evening as "free time", but unless we get some
volunteers for some items in this timeslot, it may have
to be! :(
. . . . .

Tuesday:

+Tuesday, April 5:
+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour (Chapella's) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Mexican Dining (Chapella's) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Dinner At Home (See notes) - sv

Gotta have at least one medium-size dining option in here
on Tuesday, or two smaller ones. If we don't, Chapella's
will fill quickly. DAH is more of a special-interest thing
but when combined with Chapella's, the two can only serve
a fraction of those who will be hungry.

+ 9:00pm: Pajama Party (See notes) - sv

Let's please get the after-dinner things which are going
to happen on Tuesday solid and on the schedule.

I think a moderately-priced show is the best fit opposite
the Pajama Party on Tuesday.
. . . . .

Wednesday:

+Wednesday, April 6:
+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour options (various)
+ 6:00pm: Buffalo Happy Hour (The Buffalo) - sv
+ 6:00pm: Sara's choice (TBA)
+ 6:00pm: Spotlight Happy Hour (Spotlight Lounge) - sv
+ 7:00pm: Eating Out Night (various)
+ 7:00pm: Milano's option (Milano's) - mv
+ 7:00pm: Sara's choice (TBA)
+ 7:00pm: Namaste Indian option (Namaste Indian Cuisine) - ms

For Wednesday we definitely need 1-2 smaller HH and dining
options.

+ 8:30pm: Mainstream-Alternative Night (various)
+ 8:30pm: Alternative Bar Crawl (Buffalo) - sv
+ 9:45pm: IMAX Movie Night (Brendan Palms IMAX) - ms
+ 11:59pm: Late Night Clubbing (Krave) - sv

A smaller show will be a good fit here. Also, just about any
kind of thing of any type which is intended to draw a small
to medium audience will work fine here.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Bare Escentuals:

Ginger writes (quoted):

>Do you want me to ask Stacy to do a makeover session at Bare
>Escentuals?

Yes, please. I'm sure it would be well-attended, particularly
after the word has gotten out WRT last year's sessions.

>Is Monday morning the best day to ask for?

Monday could work, but I think either Wednesday or Thursday
would be better, simply to balance the commercial activities.

On Monday we have Studio Lites and Tuesday we have Glamour
Boutique. A 9:00am start and 2 hour duration for Bare Escentuals
would still technically give SL and GB a "clear channel" in
their timeslots if those are the only or better options for you
and for Stacy and crew.

It's really your call on this.
. . . . .

>If we did I might want to move the lunch that day to Harrah's
>which is within walking distance of the Fashion Show Mall.
>Let me know.

It's very easy to adjust the lunch locations, just let us know
what to change.

>I think one would be enough and we can sign up individuals for
>later in the week if we have too many to accommodate.

My guess is that we could very easily fill two sessions to
capacity, if you want to plan them. Another approach might be
to remind our people that they are welcome at the shop at all
times, not just the time(s) on our schedule.

Please let us know.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Shows:

All: We need feedback on these shows (and any others) to let
Ginger know which way(s) to go! Sooner the better, gang! TIA!
. . . . .

Ginger writes:

I've said I will host one or more shows, but I'm out of ideas.

Here are some shows that I haven't seen (with one exception)
that I might be willing to host on Tuesday evening (or other
day) if there is any interest. We have seen many of the other
shows and with the high cost of the majors I'm not sure I want
to see them again. I've not seen Mystere or Ka, or Chris Angel
Believe, and have little interest in seeing them.

I'm open to your comments and other suggestions, help!

Ginger

show if that would be acceptable?

Harrah's Main Showroom, 3475 Las Vegas Blvd. South, $55.45-$65.45

concert, but the reviews seem positive
. . . . .

Human Nature -The Ultimate Celebration of the Motown Sound presented by
Smokey Robinson
Imperial Palace

$59.52 up

Note: We saw this last year and I loved it! Kay didn't and does not want

that would be acceptable?

Italian buffet dinner is included in the price of all tickets. Cocktails
are additional and optional.

Note: The reviews of this show are mixed and the food is probably
mediocre, but I've always wanted to do it. It's an audience
participation show in an intimate setting so its probably not for the
beginner and wall-flower!
. . . . .

Note: Defending the Caveman is NOT available Tuesday evening, but it
might be fun for another evening and maybe fun for our group and it's
downtown. The the reviews are mixed.

"Defending the Caveman"

Golden Nugget, 129 Fremont St.
$46.45-$62.90 for 8 p.m. shows, $40.95-$51.95 for matinees
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Ginger. I'm sure there are a few things in here that
will work for both you and for the gang.

I'll give you some suggestions, based upon what I've seen
and what I think our group would enjoy seeing.

First of all, I think absolute the "best fit" for shows would
be to have a moderately-priced show on Tuesday, which would
attract a larger group of our people, and a high-end show
Wednesday for a smaller group.

While we appreciate your offer to coordinate a show or shows
without attending, I'm sure there's a win-win in here, meaning
shows you have not seen which meet the other criteria we're
looking for.

Let's discuss the various shows.

+Lion King

This was suggested in feedback last year. Yes, it would probably
be of interest, but I see this as more of a "family" show, meaning
kids. Might work for a smaller group on Wednesday.
. . . . .

+Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular

This is a great show! Been there, done that, enjoyed it to
the max!

Excellent effects and music! Awesome at the beginning where
the broken chandelier re-assembles itself above the audience
and the showroom transforms into a somewhat-convincing
replica of the Opera Populaire.

Somewhat shortened for the LV production. No intermission.
They say all of the music is in there, but I swear that the
reprise of "Music Of The Night" was shortened. Ditto with
the entr'acte, which was just an interlude.
. . . . .

+Legends In Concert

I think this would be a great fit for a reasonably-priced
show for Tuesday. I think it would attract a large group
of our people. I've never seen it. If you have not seen
it, all the better.
. . . . .

+Human Nature -The Ultimate Celebration of the Motown Sound

Ditto to above, but if you've already seen it ...
. . . . .

+Nunsense

Why do I get the impression that Densie would love this?

>Note: This is somewhat of a matinee time

That's an awful time for a show! Won't fit on our schedule
anywhere, really. :(
. . . . .

+Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding

Been there, done that, but I would think (would hope) that
the Las Vegas production would have a bit more polish than
the local dinner theater (actually Diner Theater - one "n")
did.

The production (at least the version I saw) was actually
somewhat disappointing. I hope the Las Vegas cast does better.
To do something like this, you really need actors whose forte
is improv and interactive theater. I assume LV has them. :)

Lots of show time was taken up by reception dancing with a
stereotypically-tacky bad deejay and music that was much
too loud for the venue.

Uber-pregnant bridesmaid, in-your-face photographer, bleach
blonde bimbo GF of one of the parents, cousin from Jaw-Ja
whose accent clashes with the "Joisey" folks, dot.dot.dot.
. . . . .

+"Defending the Caveman"

If a high-end show won't work on Wednesday, this may very
well work.
. . . . .

Comments on any of these, gang?

All: Ginger is not too keen on the artsy Cirque type shows.
Anybody want to go down that route?

Also, any interest in the headliner-type shows?

Any other show-type suggestions?

Dinner on Thursday:

Bob writes:

McMullans Irish Pub, 4650 W. Tropicana, which is across from
the Orleans on the same side of the street. 6pm for dinner.
FYI Thurs is all you can eat fish & chips night. Full menu too.

request head count.
. . . . . . . . . . .

Thanks Bob! Got it.

With this addition, we have two very strong tracks anchoring
Thursday.

Shiloh Horse Rescue:

Rosada writes:

+Shiloh Horse Rescue Ranch is about 30 miles southwest of Las
+Vegas. Shiloh is a Federally Recognized 501 (c) (30 Non-Profit
+Operation. Donations are tax deductible! The money donated to
+this fund will be used soley for the care and feeding of the
=horses that are already in Shiloh's Rescue or Sanctuary, and
+the New Arrivals to the Rescue. The money will be used to buy
+bags of feed, hay, winter blankets, medications, supplies,
+Farrier and Vet care, and more. Even $5.00 makes a difference
+to a rescued horse!

It takes a great deal of money to run Shiloh Horse Rescue! So
I'm going to suggest a minimum donation of $15.00.

Now I have to decide where is the best place to assemble and
carpool out there. We have to drive south on I-15. Any
suggestions?

The drive will be, I'm guessing about an hour and we'll be
traveling through some scenic desert terrain. Comfortable
clothes and shoes suggested. Bring a camera! Also, perhaps
a snack to tie you over until we stop for lunch on our way
back at the Primm Outlet Mall.
. . . . . . . . . .

Sounds great, Rosada. Thanks for taking this on! :)

As for a rendezvous point, I really can't think of anything
better than Cynthia's planned rendezvous point of Betty's
Cyber Cafe in the Imperial Palace. (see below) There should
be no problem with leaving the unused vehicles in either
valet or the structure plus it's accessible via the Monorail.

Densie, I might suggest this for a rendezvous point for the
Air Tours as well.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Erotic Heritage:

Sarah writes:

There has been some discussion of a visit to the Erotic Heritage Museum
this year but I hadn't seen anything specific, so I sent a note off
letting them know who we were and to ask a few questions. My main
concern is their hours are generally limited during the week to daytime
and this seemed like something we could do some other time. I got a very
positive response from them and would like to see what kind of interest
there is here.

+"Hello Sarah, I am glad to hear that you would like to bring your group
+to tour the Museum. We are more than willing to come in on the evening
+so that the group can get a good tour of the Museum. Group rate is $10
+a head and you don't need to worry about a minimum attendance. Just let
+us know the time and date and we will open the Museum for you."

+Thank you for contacting the Erotic Heritage Museum!
. . . . . . . . . .

JoAnn responds:

Any night but Thursday for me. JoAnn Segrue
. . . . . . . . . .

Annie responds:

Thanks, Sarah!

If you want an evening thing, either Tuesday or Wednesday would
work, maybe even Sunday depending on what falls into place for
that evening.

I would suggest Tuesday if you want a stronger turnout and
Wednesday for a smaller group.

I can envision this being very popular and having the attraction
to be a strong "anchor" for Tuesday or even Sunday.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Mt. Charleston and group rates:

Cynthia writes (slight edit):

This is a followup addendum to the Mt. Charleston excursion
event for Thursday at 9:00am.

I suggest we set a rendezvous point at Betty's Cyber Cafe at
9:00am for all interested which will give us easy access to the
parking garage.

I also suggest we offer drivers who volunteer to drive us up a
$15.00 donation for gas, that's considering about three to four
passengers per car - one up front and two or three in the back,
with all back seat middle spaces reserved for me, of course,
(hostess priviledge).

I called the lodge and they said they were open as late as May
of last year, but won't know about skiing until April. It appears
like an easy and enjoyable ride up there - just out N. Rancho Dr.,
which becomes I-95 then left onto Kyle Canyon Rd.,and on up to
the mountain. I don't want to go into anymore detail about it
because I've never been up there, and I just want it all to be
a great big surprise that unfolds before me the deeper we get
into it and as the day wanders gracefully along its lovely way,
oh my!

If you would like me to put this in the "What is a " format for an
official announcment, just let me know.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks Cynthia. We have it down to meet at Betty's at 9:00am
on Thursday. I really can't think of a better place to meet.

OBTW, it's not I-95, it's US 95. (I-95 is the one which runs
from Florida to Baaaaston.) I would suggest going directly to
95 via I-15 and not futzing around with Rancho and the local
streets unless you have a particular reason for doing so.

Yes, please, write this up as a "What is a ..." and post it
to the Discussion Forum. Although we discourage "ifs" in
these things, I think the question on skiing will be up in
the air until very shortly before it happens.
. . . . .

Cynthia continues:

I went by the Group Tours office at IP again and it appears that they
are mostly out of business. They were a private enterprise to begin with
- Cosmos Tours, or something - but I couldn't raise them. I think
individual travel agents would be the ideal way to go for group rates
for most of us.

Glamour Boutique:

Gabi writes (quoted):

>I will be hostess @ Glamour boutique. Do I need to check with
>them if this time works? I should probably at least check with
>them on Monday? This is my first event. Any suggestions are

You might touch base if you like. Big thing for one of these
is to simply be there and welcome the others. No, you don't
need to be present for the entire time.

>As far as Shopping with Gabi. I will be going to the High Tea
>so it just won't work for me to go to the makeup session or do

We can always use Big Sisters. If you haven't done so
already, please fill out the Big Sister Volunteer form,
which is accessible via a button from the registration
screen.

Got it, thanks. :) All set.

Marisa writes (quoted):

Got all of them. Thanks. :)

Store Closing:

Nora writes (quoted):

Thanks for the report.

I know there was some interest in doing this some afternoon,
but unfortunately ...

Various:

Katie writes:

>+I mentioned earlier in the year that I would like to assist

>+in the mix.

Still interested, Katie?

I am sorry to have to say No. I can't help with these as I won't
be there till' very late Monday evening so I can't help with the
opener either.

My plans had to change for the whole week but I can still help
out a little if I am needed, I Did ask already if anyone needed
help to let me know via e mail but no one responded. This happened
last year too, It's no big deal but this subject was brought up
earlier so as a good and loyal DLVer I responded. *Any event I
am attending when the sign up comes around I am willing to help
with*.

I can still assist with the High Tea and The limo evening as a
Hostess or greeter. (I have my Wallmart Greeters Vest ready and
just waiting to go into action) *Grin*.

Also if we have a Frank Marino show I would like to be of
assistance there too. Also as a greeter etc'. Every little
bit helps!
. . . . . . . . . .

As to volunteering and not getting response, you really need
to be very explicit as to what you're volunteering to do. If
you state the areas in which you're willing to assist, as you've
done in a few cases, you'll probably get a better response.

Also, speaking very freely, if you indicate or imply that your
involvement will be limited to greeting, you probably will not
get as many responses as you would if you would volunteer to
take on a more substantial role.

Don't get me wrong here, greeting is important, and we'll be
calling for designated greeters for certain things in the near
future, but as of this time, the needs of the coordinators and
the group as a whole are more along the lines of taking very
active roles in producing our activities.
