JoAnn's Words:

Annie has honed in on the "schedule's 'soft spots'" and it seems like
we should be able to close it off in the next two weeks.

What I see missing are some Shows. What is a trip to Vegas without a
couple of Shows being coordinated by our volunteers.

A volunteer has five(5) easy steps for hosting this activity: (i) pick
the show you would like to see, (ii) pick the night, (iv) provide the
information on how our Diva people need to sign up for their ticket,
and (v) then be there to greet them at the showplace lobby. Enjoy the
evening.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Evening schedule once-over:

We are now at the two-month mark.

Since DLV occurs earlier in the year than it has ever in the
past, we're about where we usually are in late February from
a planning perspective.

We're now entering "busy" season as far as planning and firming
up things is concerned.

Over the next two months we're asking all on the ORG list to
please read all ORG mailings promptly and please give us some
kind of a response if your name is called.

Total headcount as of Tuesday evening now stands at 148, and
the show-up prediction is 127. General (open) registration
is planned to open the weekend of the 12th. These numbers are,
of course, those we have already registered, and do not take
into account those who will register between now and April.

We're one month out from activity sign-up. At that time,
anything which requires a sign-up or a headcount will need
to be solid as far as time and day, and preferably price and
location.

Our primary focus and main priority over the next few weeks
will be the evening schedule, mainly filling in the weak spots.
Joann and I (Annie) apologize in advance for being somewhat
assertive and even pushy over the next month or so, but it's
critical to the success of DLV that each evening is well-rounded
and that no evenings are overloaded.

All: For those of you who have plans for activities in the works
which have not been assigned a timeslot, please do so, even if
tentative, within the next list cycle. We would very much
appreciate it if you would do this without us having to chase
you down for a decision. :)

Please continue to think about and plan daytime things. Even
though we'll be focusing on the evenings in the near future,
our daytimes are important too.
. . . . . . . . . .

Let's go over the evening schedule, day by day, and note which
spots are in need of additional activities.

For those who want the "Readers Digest Version", Tuesday and
Wednesday evenings are our week spots and those are the two
evenings on which we must concentrate. Volunteers? :)

The "War And Peace" version follows: :)
. . . . .

Sunday, April 3:
     6:00pm: Happy Hour options (various)
6:00pm: Caesars Happy Hour (Caesars) - ms
6:00pm: Paris Happy Hour (Paris) - ms
     7:00pm: Dining options (various)
7:00pm: Caesars Buffet Dinner (Caesars) - ms
7:00pm: Mon Ami Gabi dinner (Mon Ami Gabi) - ms

We will need at least one, preferably two more dining options
for Sunday evening. The two we have can only serve a small
portion of our in-town crowd.

An inexpensive dining option is lacking here. Also we could
use a "safe" dining option for Sunday, since both of the options
currently on the schedule have some major public exposure.

See suggestions below.

     8:30pm: After-dinner options (various)

Our tentative plans are to have a mainstream common gathering
and an alternative (safe) common gathering on Sunday. I (Annie)
have volunteered to host(ess) one of them. I tentatively have
picked Crewsn for the alternative one.

We need a volunteer to host(ess) a mainstream gathering. Maybe
something like Hard Rock, Margaritaville, maybe a PTs type place,
things like that.

If somebody wants to host(ess) the alternative gathering, please
say so and I'll do the mainstream one.
. . . . . . . . . . .

(daytime activities omitted)

Monday, April 4:
6:00pm: Happy Hour (Firefly Plaza) - mv
7:00pm: Dinner (Firefly Plaza) - mv
8:30pm: Welcome Celebration (Firefly Plaza) - mv
9:30pm: Group Photo (Firefly Plaza) - ms
10:00pm: Beauty Bar Karaoke (Beauty Bar) - ms

Monday evening is solid. Thanks Gang! :)
. . . . . . . . . .

Tuesday, April 5:
     6:00pm: Happy Hour (Chapella's) - ms
     7:00pm: Mexican Dining (Chapella's) - ms
7:00pm: Dinner At Home (See notes) - sv
9:00pm: Pajama Party (See notes) - sv

Tuesday after dinner is our primary weak spot! We'll definitely
need a few things in here to round it out.

One more dining option would be nice but not imperative.

Cd.com folks: This would be a great evening for the cd.com
dinner and social.

After dinner we do need a few medium-scale things.

The Prom/Formal/Homecoming/whatever (see below) would be an
excellent fit here!

Shows would work well in this space.

I know Susan has something in the works but we don't know if
this will be Tuesday or Wednesday as of this time.

A Pity Party (or something similar) would be a good fit here.
See notes below.
. . . . . . . . . .

Wednesday, April 6:
     6:00pm: Happy Hour options (various)
6:00pm: Buffalo Happy Hour (The Buffalo) - sv
6:00pm: Spotlight Happy Hour (Spotlight Lounge) - sv
     7:00pm: Eating Out Night (various)
     7:00pm: Milano's option (Milano's) - mv
7:00pm: Namaste Indian option (Namaste Indian Cuisine) - ms
     8:30pm: Mainstream-Alternative Night (various)
8:30pm: Alternative Bar Crawl (Buffalo) - sv

Wednesday evening is our secondary weak spot. What we need are
a number of smaller low-maintenance HH/dining and after-dinner
activity options. See some suggestions below.

A higher-end dining option would be a good fit here. Ditto for
a buffet option or any of the suggestions in the following
section.

Shows, social activities, clubbing, touristy stuff (Paris tower,
Fremont Street, etc.) would all be a good fit here.

Movie Night (see below) would be a great fit Wednesday.

The cd.com dinner and social would also work here, but you
would probably have a lesser turnout than you would on Tuesday.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thursday, April 7:
6:00pm: Happy Hour (Trevi) - ms
     7:00pm: Dinner (Trevi) - ms
8:00pm: The Fab (Beatles Tribute) (Brendan's Irish Pub) - ms
9:00pm: Limousine Tour (Caesars) - ms

Thursday is taking shape nicely. Close to solid. :)

If Susan (or another) will designate a HH and Dinner location
at Orleans, I think it will round things out and we can then
consider Thursday to be solid as well.
. . . . . . . . . .

Friday, April 8:
6:00pm: Happy Hour (Bahama Breeze) - mv
7:00pm: Dinner (Bahama Breeze) - mv
8:30pm: Farewell Celebration (Bahama Breeze) - mv
10:00pm: Dancing at Paris (Paris) - ms

Friday evening looks solid. Thanks again! :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
JoAnn's Challenge:

In reference to JoAnn's note last mailing ...

>I would suggest that we get a short list from all of you of
>maybe 10 items by Wednesday this coming week which you all
>feel we could be doing.

1. Fremont Street Experience. Some evening, good fit Wednesday.

2. Margaritaville, Flamingo. Good HH and dinner option for
either Sunday or Wednesday, possibly Tuesday.

3. Human Nature show at Imperial Palace. My hunch is that a few
appropriately-placed $$$ could get the group seated together
with little formality. Good option for Tuesday or Wednesday,
maybe even Sunday.

4. Dining at Blue Ox East or Blue Ox Way-West. Sun/Tue/Wed.

5. Cafe Heidelberg, German cuisine. Ditto on days.

6. Lake Mead Boat Tour and/or Hoover Dam. Weekday morning.

7. Famous Dave's BBQ. Say "hi" to Charles' SO. :) Sun/Tue/Wed.

8. Ice Cream Social, Leatherbys on Sahara. Any afternoon.

9. Komol - Multiple suggestions. Thai and Pan-Asian. Sun/Tue/Wed.

10. I provided 9. Somebody fill this one in. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Various activities:

Susan R. writes (quoted):

>Hi all. Irish pubbing will not be happening this year. Sorry.
>I know that it was well attended the last 2 years and it leaves
>a big opening on Sunday.

Thanks for the update, Susan.

One question: Should McMullan's remain "green light" on our
Big List? Are there any issues or is it just that it's not
going to work for you/them this year?
. . . . .

>I will organize an event on Thursday. The Fab, a Beatles
>tribute band, plays at Brendan's Irish Pub in the Orleans
>from 8 until 12. I've seen them a few times and they always
>welcome us. They are very good and they're show is FREE.

>This will be a simple just show up. Brendan's does not serve
>food, although you can order off Fudrucker's menu. There are
>some good restaurants in the Orleans. So the possibility for
>a dining option is there.

Got it on the schedule, thanks. :) That will compliment the
Limo Tour and round out Thursday, particularly if there's a
designated dining option prior.

We have it as "no sign-up, just show-up", but if you want an
approximate headcount we can easily change it to sign-up
requested for headcount.
. . . . .

>Bob and I are working on something for Wednesday or possibly
>Tuesday depending on a number of things. Something like a jam
>session possibly combined with karaoke. We are trying to work
>it out with Micke Tanno. He's does karaoke but is also a good
>musical impressionist. He does Tom Jones better than Tom Jones.

>Some of you might remember him. He used to work at Elvis. In
>fact he was the KJ at the pity party there a few years ago. I
>always brought my own CD to his karaoke shows.

Please let us know what develops. Both Tuesday and Wednesday
are open for things like this. Tuesday would probably give you
the stronger turnout.
. . . . .

>I'm not interested in doing the pity party. Last year I just
>arranged the venue and sang with Mindy. With Mindy not coming
>this year, and we will miss you as you made that a success last
>year, someone with enthusiasm will have to step up.

Ladies? Gentlemen? Pity Party Fans?

If a Pity Party type of thing is going to happen this year, we
are going to need somebody to step up to the plate and take a
swing at it -- like NOW. Since this is one activity which does
require some detailed planning, this will need to happen within
the next few weeks.
. . . . .

>The Bahame Breeze situation it tricky. The gazebo room has a
>great atmosphere. It also comes with Tommy Rocker, who played
>our party last year. He is a regular at the so called private
>functions. I say so called because last year there were some
>people dining there who weren't with us. years ago, when we were
>out in the main room, I felt that it was too spread out.

>I'm not a fan of a limited menu but I think that if our only
>choice is the gazebo room and a limited menu or the regular
>restaurant and the full menu, I'd prefer the gazebo room.

>How did we end up with the gazebo room and a full menu last
>year?

It was the luck of the draw. Nobody with the $$$ reserved it
so we got it, same as we did in 2009. Since no arrangements
were made for a suck^H^H^H^Hlimited menu, the full menu was
the only option. :)

We've been very lucky in this respect the past two years. Cross
fingers and think positive for this year, as it appears that
the wind is blowing in the direction of the full menu and the
take-a-chance on the room.

>I was at the Beauty Bar karaoke last year and it was great fun.
>I hope to be there this year also.

>I'll try to come up with another dinner option. I'll let you know.

Thanks, Susan.

What I think would round out Thursday (evening) would be to
designate a Pre-Fab (pun not intended but it would make a good
title on the schedule) dining location at Orleans for a seamless
no-move evening for those choosing that option.

Of course if you want to host(ess) a dining option on Sunday
or Wednesday as well, we would certainly appreciate it. :)

Prom/Formal and movie:

Nikki writes:

Sorry I've been a little out of the loop the last few months. I was
under the impression I would have to miss DLV 2011. I wasn't happy with
that at all but now things have changed for the better.

Prom/Formal

I only took a quick look at the schedule and it would appear that
Tuesday night may have room for an event such as this. I'm really not to
sure though on how many would be interested after some of the responses
I saw last fall. Also for anyone flying into Vegas may run into a space
problem with luggage just to bring a formal gown.

Perhaps a change in theme for the idea? Maybe like a homecoming dance?
Disco?

If there proves to be a strong interest then I'm all for hostessing.

Other thoughts...

I thought I saw an idea to bring back movie night? But I don't remember
seeing it on the schedule. Was this a no go? Im always up for a good
IMAX flick.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Nikki!

I agree that a Prom/Formal/Homecoming or similar thing would be
a great medium-size activity for Tuesday. Perhaps this could be
combined with what Bob and Susan have in mind.

My hunch is that a place like Escape or Crewsn could be talked
into this in exchange for the bar business.

Prom and formal fans? We need comments and feedback on this,
the sooner the better!

As for Movie Night, the only reason it's not on the schedule is
that nobody's agreed to host(ess) it. If you want to do it,
Wednesday would be a very good fit. IMAX would probably be a
more popular option than a regular film.

Mount Charleston Trip:

Cynthia writes:

Hi Diva's

Sounds good to me let's go with the car-trip up to Mt. Chas.ton
on Thurs. morning the 7th at say 9:00am. it looks like there's
plenty of room on the schedule for it there. We'll call it the
Mt. Chas.ton [sic] excursion and get-away, for anyone who wants
to visit the countryside for a while and see Vegas from a different
perspective.

We'll try to get back to town by say 2:00 or 3:00, and even it
we can't ski, it will still be a nice diversion.

So, even if there's no snow by then, it now becomes an option
for anyone who just wants to get out of town for a few hours.

It should be really pretty up there by April. I've heard people
talking, saying that if you take your bicycles up there you can
literally just coast in neutral all the way back to the strip.

How's that work for you?

ps I'll have something on that IP Group Tour rate soon.
. . . . . . . . . .

Excellent, Cynthia. Thursday is starting to look good, both
daytime and evening!

I don't know if it was intentional or maybe a character set
issue, but your note had Charleston spelled "Chas.ton" with
the period in there.

Please select a rendezvous point. Preferably someplace where
extra vehicles can be left without a tow-away.

I've never been up there on a bike (getting up would be the
hard part) but I've taken the Lee Canyon Road back a few times
and yes, you can get any vehicle going a quite at clip by
gravity alone. :) IIRC it's about a 15 mile fairly straight
downgrade.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Golf confirmed:

Danielle writes:

All,

Ok, it took a while to get through, but I finally connected this
morning, and we are confirmed... for Desert Rose on Wednesday, April
6, tee times starting at 9 am. I left a deposit on a credit card.

The price will be same as last year, $45, which includes green fees,
carts, range balls and a chit for a hot dog and fountain drink in the
restaurant.

I spoke directly with the general manager, who was absolutely delighted
that we were returning, and appreciated our loyalty.

Quite frankly, I think this is a very good deal... especially since they
are so welcoming.

I think we should do the gifting again, too. Can't remember, though,
what the people who got the best and worst scores got in the past.
Anyone remember? A tiara for first? From where? What for worst?
Tells you something about my game....

Annie, I'll sort through my PayPal account, to figure out how I can
collect that way, which is how Mindy has handled it in the past...
Mindy any advice on how to set this up? What if people don't have
PayPal?

Fore!
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks Danielle.

Great price! Good job! :)

One thing we'll need is a deadline for payment and, if there is
one, a deadline for cancellation.

Also, what time do you want as the officially-designated start
time on the schedule. It currently shows as 8:00am. Do you want
that changed to 8:30 or 9:00? My suggestion is to not post it
any later than 8:30 since our people do have a propensity to
run fashionably late.

For those without a Paypal account, at least the last time I
did it, Paypal would take a one-time payment using a credit
card without opening an account. I assume it's still valid to
do it this way.

Skiing, Karaoke, etc.:

Densie writes (quoted):

>>(Watch Densie ask if nun-wear is allowed.) :)

>Umm...what's anybody gonna say? I'm sorry, ma'am, you have to
>take that off?

No, they're gonna ask how much per hour. :) :) :)
. . . . .

Ski trip:

>I hope I'm not one of the ones who is insterested in the ski
>trip. I would love to do it, but I've been barred from
>participating in skiing, adult soap box racing, or anything
>else that can break my neck again. Tony would have a fit.

The way it looks, it will be mainly a leisurely trip, but
if the slopes are open, those who want to will be able to
try it and come back sore and bruised. :)
. . . . .

>>We can pimp it at the
>>Welcome Celebration just before. Better yet, we'll give you
>>the mike and you can pimp it! :)

>I'm always happy to pimp. Informal, impromptu, total anarchy...

Hmmmm ... a nun as a pimp. Never seen that before. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Macy's makeover:

Vanessa writes:

Regarding the Macy's makeover.... we would be interested in
attending, but is Friday afternoon the best time for us and the
Fashion Mall... seems like Friday afternoon would be pretty busy
anyway at the Mall... don't mind the attention but seems like a
Wednesday or Thursday would be better for the makeup counters...
hopefully will include the Lancome Counter. If Friday is the day
let's go with the later time so we can fit it in after the HIgh Tea.
. . . . . . . . . .

The reason for Friday, IIAC, is to allow the makeovers right
before the final evening. It's really up to those who plan the
activities to set the timing. There are going to be choices to
be made in some cases.

IMAO, makeovers would work on Thursday, as a prep for the Limo
Tour as well, but I'm not the one to make the call.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Volunteer:

Darlene writes (quoted):

>hi how are you just checking in in regards to diva if you ladies
>still me as a volunteer and a big sister even though attending a
>diva been a long time and missed and had to cancel a few years
>back.

Yes, we always need Big Sisters. I know Nora has you on the
list. If you're a "best fit match" with a Little Sister, yes
you'll be called upon.
. . . . .

>still very active here in so cal well known in the community
>and been out 27 years parttime in fem and also volunteer yearly
>(28Yrs) will gay pride LA in registration and volunteer relations
>including long beach pride and all the transgender summits we
>have here yearly and trans-unity (Transgender Pride in LA) as
>well or a big sister ....let me know getting my reservations done
>on monday for imperial palace thanks

The area in which we most need help, Darlene (and all), is for
volunteers to take on some of the smaller low-maintenance
things to round out Tuesday, Wednesday, and to an extent Sunday.

Please consider doing one of these. If you don't want to go it
alone, we'll pair you up with someone who can support and
assist.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
China Ranch Date Farm:

Kimberly Kael writes:

>+If we want to go somewhere truly unique for this years Diva
>+I recommend going to the China Ranch. It is about a 2 hour
>+ride from Vegas, on the way to Pahrump

Keep in mind that the superficial similarity in names may lead
the casual reader to assume that "China Ranch" is something
like the "Chicken Ranch" and that "Date Farm" should therefore
be read as a farm for a very different kind of date ...

We should probably be extra clear that this is actually
agricultural in nature.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks for the heads-up, Kimberly. No, I did not make the
connection, but it could be a source of confusion. I know we
have had confusion with similarly-named venues in the past.

This one may be a moot point. Nora, who suggested this, has
some iffy situations, so unless somebody volunteers to take
this one on, it will not happen, this year at least.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Shopping and such:

Gabi writes:

Timing of shopping trip is too tight for me to go to high tea.

Plus my outfit will be all wrong.
. . . . . . . . . .

Gabi, it's never intended for a volunteer to miss out on any
activities they find of interest in order to lead something
else.

Your "Shopping With Gabi" is very "portable" in nature and can
happen any day, morning or afternoon. Sure, it might be nice
to have it segue into the makeovers, but it's not a show-stopper
by any means if it doesn't. It's quite viable as a stand-alone
activity.

If you want to do High Tea, then do High Tea. Just give us
another timeslot for Shopping With Gabi. Any morning or
afternoon will be fine.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Translations:

Sarona writes:

If people will volunteer as French, German, or Esperanto
translators, we can sure include them too.

If you need any Japanese translators, I will be happy to do my
best.
. . . . .

Densie writes:

>Are you volunteering to be our official French translator?

Je m'en fous, If nobody else wants to do it, I will.

>German, anyone?

Make Tony be our German translator. If he can sign me up to
sing a song at karaoke in German, I can volunteer him for this.

>If you recall, at our second year of DLV, back in 1998, we
>did have someone whose native language was German.

I would love to have some native French speakers there, but there
are some French songs that I won't sing in karaoke if I know that
there are francos in the audience. Most of the time it's kind of
my private joke, singing about necrophilia, fellatio, or lesbian
sex in a mainstream bar, and no one has any idea what I'm saying.
Then again, if it's in a gay bar or anywhere that people are open
about things, they might appreciate the levity.
. . . . . . . . . .

My impression of the crowd at the Beauty Bar is that they might
appreciate such levity. :) :)

We actually had some French conversation last year at the
Firefly. I actually was able to recall a few phrases. :)
(No, not voulez vous coucher ...) :)
