Joann Sez:

We have the first volunteer for the NSD program in
"transformation". Waiting for #2 & #3..... This will be
a fun and challenging endeavor...

The schedule is coming along, however, there are still a number
of times needing activity options to occur each day with a
volunteer to make it happen.

So let me offer some events that could happen if we have
some more volunteers to coordinate.

These volunteers are really the "greet and 'event lead'
activity" persons. These events will be successful if the
group number is only 5 or 6 up and might be 10 ---

(a) Discount Shopping trip [just 2 or 3 locations]

(b) Art Tour [off-Main line] --- two days - two location format

(c) Day Tour of the Bellegio Garden with tea/dessert following [2-3pm ?]

(d) An afternoon walk through City Center including the art exhibit
[2-3pm ?]

(e) Gorilla Theater Bet Placing-- [hit three tables in 5 minutes] then
go to next casino .

(f) Learn 'the how' of Roulette session as a group at a Casino

(g) Glamour Boutique-- " A make-up teach-in with Amy"

(h) Photo the Tourists at xxxxx site [mall-- fountain--??? where
tourist walk] They might just want to pose with a Diva!

I'm sure you can come up with additional ideas to make an afternoon
"fun" ! This should just be a two hour activity.

Schedule review:

Overall, things are looking very good, and we do thank all who
are involved in coordinating activities for making this so.

Please, if your "name is called" in this section, please give
us some kind of a response regarding your activity, even if
it's a "hold on, I need to think about this", as we're just
about at the two-month mark.

Everyone, please look this section over in some depth, as it
outlines our needs which you can help meet! :)

Let's take some time to do a somewhat in-depth review of our
schedule as it sits today, noting the solid spots, the weak
spots, and offering some suggestions for where some of the
activities which have been planned or spoken about but not
yet scheduled might fit.

On Sunday, March 6., all activities which require some kind
of a sign-up or a headcount will need to be solid, at least
as far as day/time, cost, and payment instructions are
concerned. It's trivially easy to add activities to the
sign-up screen before activity sign-up gets underway, but
close to impossible to make things work if they are not.
. . . . . . . . . .

Let's go over the schedule ...

+Sunday, April 3:
+ 11:00am: Religious Services (Metropolitan Community Church) - sv

If this is to stay on the schedule, we'll need a volunteer
to agree to be there and welcome the others. Eileen, you
have "first refusal rights" on this one. Are you "go" for
this year or do you want to pass the torch to another?
. . . . .

+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour options (various)
+ 6:00pm: Caesars Happy Hour (Caesars) - ms
+ 6:00pm: Paris Happy Hour (Paris) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Dining options (various)
+ 7:00pm: Caesars Buffet Dinner (Caesars) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Mon Ami Gabi dinner (Mon Ami Gabi) - ms

We'll be needing at least one more HH and dining option in
here for Sunday evening.

Bob? Susan? Are you "go" on your Irish Pub thing this year?

Everyone: It might be nice to have a good solid inexpensive
dining option in this timeslot. Both of the scheduled ones
will be in the $25-ish per person range.

+ 8:30pm: After-dinner options (various)

We have tentative plans for an "Alternative Common Gathering"
in a "safe" venue here, but we need at least one more
option. The Irish Pub would work well, IMAO, for more of a
mainstream thing.
. . . . . . . . . .

+Monday, April 4:
+ 8:00am: Air Tours (TBA) - ms
+ 12:15pm: Studio Lites Open House (Studio Lites) - sv
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (Stratosphere Buffet) - ms
+ 3:00pm: Beginner Open House (See notes) - sv

Monday morning and afternoon are shaping up nicely, but there
is room for some kind of a touristy, perhaps "art tour" type
of thing in the early afternoon timeslot.

I know there's chatter about the Art Tour type stuff going on
in DISC.

Ginger? Any plans on a re-run of Bare Escentuals?

As per our survey feedback last year, we do want to watch
things Monday afternoon as there was somewhat of a time
crunch which caused some to be late to the Welcome Celebration.
. . . . .

+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour (Firefly Plaza) - mv
+ 7:00pm: Dinner (Firefly Plaza) - mv
+ 8:30pm: Welcome Celebration (Firefly Plaza) - mv
+ 9:30pm: Group Photo (Firefly Plaza) - ms
+ 10:00pm: Karaoke (Beauty Bar) - ms

IMAO, Monday evening is solid assuming details fall in place
for the Firefly gathering. Big thanks to all who worked to
make this all come together!
. . . . . . . . . .

+Tuesday, April 5:
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (LV Hilton Buffet) - ms
+ 3:00pm: Beginner Open House (See notes) - sv

Tuesday morning and afternoon are wide open. Just about
anything will fit in here. Touristy, social, Art Tour
type of things, etc.

Even a more intense daytime activity might fit well on
Tuesday.

Rosada? Your Shiloh Horse Ranch tour might be a good fit
for Tuesday as well. Wednesday or Thursday would also work
for this type of thing.

Perhaps one of the commercial "Open House" sessions can
fit in here on Tuesday.
. . . . .

+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour (Chapella's) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Mexican Dining (Chapella's) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Dinner At Home (See notes) - sv

We have two dining options for Tuesday, but even when they
are combined they can only serve a fraction of our in-town
contingent.

We need at least one more dining option in here.

This might be a good timeslot for the cd.com get-together,
combining a meal and social activity.

+ 9:00pm: Pajama Party (See notes) - sv

As most know, the Pajama Party can only serve a small fraction
of our in-town attendees.

Susan? Bob? Pity Party? Jam Session? Either of these would
be a good fit for Tuesday.

A show, any scale, plain or fancy, would work in here too.
. . . . . . . . . .

+Wednesday, April 6:
+ 8:00am: DLV Invitational Golf (Desert Rose) - ms
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (Harrahs Buffet) - ms
+ 3:00pm: Beginner Open House (See notes) - sv

Golf is a very high-interest activity, but it only is of
interest to a certain number of our people. Wednesday during
the day is still open to just about anything, simple or very
intense.

Horse Ranch, Ski Trip, Art Tour, shopping, just about anything
would work well for daytime on Wednesday.

Good timeslot for the commercial activities as well.
. . . . .

Wednesday evening is our traditional "Eating Out Night" and
"Mainstream-Alternative Night", and for those who are not
clear on the concept, it's an evening reserved for smaller
activities, all types, both high-interest and special-interest
in nature.

+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour options (various)
+ 6:00pm: Buffalo Happy Hour (The Buffalo) - sv
+ 6:00pm: Crystal's Choice Happy Hour (TBD) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Eating Out Night (various)
+ 7:00pm: Milano's option (Milano's) - mv
+ 7:00pm: Crystal's Choice (TBD) - ms
+ 8:30pm: Mainstream-Alternative Night (various)
+ 8:30pm: Alternative Bar Crawl (Buffalo) - sv

We'll be needing at least two other dining options for
Wednesday evening.

We've often times had one "high end" dining option, such as
a nice steak house or a more haute cuisine. Morton's? Roy's?

Ethnic or exotic works well here too. Komol?

The cd.com thing would work here too, but the pool of potential
participants will most likely be smaller than on Tuesday.

As for after dinner, just about anything will work. We've
had shows, both small and large, inexpensive and high end,
in here. Things like the Pity Party or Jam Session will work
in this timeslot as well.
. . . . . . . . .

+Thursday, April 7:
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (Paris Buffet) - ms

Thursday during the day is still pretty much Tabula Rasa.
. . . . .

+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour (Trevi) - ms
+ 7:00pm: Dinner (Trevi) - ms
+ 9:00pm: Limousine Tour (tba) - ms

The Limo Tour anchors Thursday evening, but it typically will
draw 30-some, about 1/5 of our in-town attendees. Ditto for
Trevi.

Any kind of show or social activity would fit here nicely.

Another dining activity would be appropriate in here too.

+Friday, April 8:
+ 2:00am: Charles Bar (Bellagio) - ms
+ 9:00am: Pistol-Rifle Shooting (TBD) - ms
+ 1:00pm: Lunch With Ginger (Imperial Palace Buffet) - ms
+ 2:00pm: High Tea (Four Seasons) - ms

We're kind of planning on a morning shopping and/or makeover
session in here. Assuming that falls into place, I think Friday
daytime is looking good.

+ 6:00pm: Happy Hour (Bahama Breeze) - mv
+ 7:00pm: Dinner (Bahama Breeze) - mv
+ 8:30pm: Farewell Celebration (Bahama Breeze) - mv
+ 10:00pm: Dancing at Paris (Paris) - ms

Friday evening is solid! Thanks for making it so! :)

Karaoke is ON:

Cynthia writes:

Hi Denise and all interested,

It was my good fortune to have met KJ Heather at Beauty Bar
last night, she is still hosting karaoke there on Monday nights
starting at around 10:00pm.

I told her a group of us would be coming in on Mon. April 4th.

She said she remembers us from last year and what a lot of fun
we were. She further said she will be expecting us, and we can
bring our own disks; they have an audio tech. on duty who will
check them out and put them in the proper application player for
us.

Beauty Bar is essentiallty a rock 'n roll bar, and has one heck
of a sound system; most nights they open both front doors and
let the sound drift outside onto the street to draw the crowd.
There is a stage out back on the patio that borders the alleyway
for bands and on summer nights when they're playing you can hear
them from blocks away.

Soooo, Heather say's we're all set, and you can put us on
schedule right after FF opener and the promenade down Fremont.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Cynthia.

Good job! :) :)

Let's consider this one to be solid. We'll mark both you and
Densie as coordinators.

I'm looking forward to this one already! :)

Bahama Breeze:

We need feedback on this one too, gang. Please give Alanna,
Beverly and crew some insight on the decisions they will
have to make.
. . . . .

Alanna writes:

This is quote from BB about final dinner.

+Thanks. Will this be all one check for the group Or will it be
+seperate tickets?

+If it is seperate tickets we will add an 18% gratuity to each
+individual check. It will require a lot of extra time for the
+service staff to split checks and cash out 100-120 people.

+In order to reserve a specific space and time we do the group
+menus to gurantee that the sales will be meet for premium areas
+on higher volume nights.

+If you do off the menu rather than one of our group menus I can
+not gurantee a specific area in the restaurant. If you have a
+prefrence I can put that down but if I have another group that
+is willing to do a group menu in the same area I will contact
+you so you can decide if you would like to go this route
+instead.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks for the update, Alanna.

We need comments and feedback, gang, the sooner the better.

I have some opinions, but I'm not everybody.

One particular note I have, about the projected capacity. The
note above states 100-120 people.

While I don't doubt that the final turnout may hit the 100
mark, and even 120 is not out of the question by any means,
I seriously doubt that 100-120 will be dining, even if the
full menu is offered. Historically speaking, 60-70% or so
of those who show up to our major gatherings will be eating
there. The majority of the non-eaters will be consuming
drinks, which will add to the bottom line of the facility.

So, a good ballpark estimate will be 60-70 meals sold, but
the availability of the full menu will definitely impact
this number.

When activity sign-up gets going, we'll have much closer
estimates of how many will be eating there.
. . . . .

It appears from their note that there is a decision to be
made, an either/or situation. Either full menu or else a
guaranteed Gazebo Room. There's an if on the second choice
too, a hefty deposit for the guarantee of the Gazebo Room.

If you have an underwriter (such as the photographer) who
is willing to front this, then that "if" is solved.
. . . . .

This is really your call. It's really difficult for me to
try to predict which (full menu or guarantee of the better
room) is the better option for the group as a whole.
(flip-SLAP-heads!)

The only thing I think we need to avoid is any kind of a
situation where there's a charge "just to walk through
the door", as that would be a turnout-killer.

Thoughts on any of this, gang?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Firefly Comments:

Katie writes:

I attended the opener in 2010 and originally intended not to
dine there as I ate earlier in the day but as the night wore
on I had the munchies and snacked there anyway, As you say,
I Did buy a lot of drinks to help their economic growth a
tad though.

I agree that a door fee/minimum of $25 food bill is a bit of a
downer as a lot of our attendees both new and old will give this
a bye just because of that.

Paradise Rd sounds like a much better plan. For one thing
their kitchen is in constant use and likely clean to an extent
whereas an Unused kitchen downtown which just opens a few
times / year isn't a place I would consider dining in. If the
Paradise location this is in the south end it would be a cheaper
cab ride too as Downtown is a long way from the Strip. (I Don't
drink and Drive and Vegas has very strict laws on that subject ).

I thought Firefly was a terrific place to kick off the week last
year but my enthusiasm is a lot less when I hear the place has
closed down. Hence lack of attention to finer details like
Cleanliness, Construction barriers, unlit and unsupervised
parking and lack of sufficient lighting out front.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Katie.

I agree with much of what you stated.

One point you bring up which I really didn't think of is
parking. Downtown does have a lack of totally-free no strings
attached parking. Still, it didn't seem to hold things back
last year at all! :)

Group rates at Imperial Palace:

Cynthia writes (edited slightly):

While hosting the Thrift Shop Tour on Wed. of last year, it
was my good fortune to have run into a gentleman from the
Imperial Palace Group Tours Office.

He (Robert) ... wondered why we didn't just come in as a group
and he could give us a group tour rate on accommodations, which,
he said, would lower our room rates considerably, plus entitle
us to extra perks, comps, and freebies too.

He said he could arrange a meeting with a customer service rep.
at anytime if we would simply let him know in advance. I'm
blessed with beauty and brains, but God deemed that I was to
be poor and humble - hey, two out of three ain't bad - so it
sounded like a pretty good deal to me. I told Robert that I
would simply relay the message upstairs, of course; so, there
you have it.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Cynthia, and pardon me for being skeptical on this,
but we've been down the "special group rate" path many times
over our history, and only once (Nora's negotiation with the
long-gone St. Tropez) have we obtained any true black and
white rates which actually beat web rates or cold-call rates.

Before we announce anything, please go to Robert and get his
best black and white rates for the DLV dates. As a reference,
the harrahs.com web site is now showing the following for
check-in April 3 and check-out April 8 at the Imperial
Palace:

Capri: $140.00 total, $28 per night.
Tower ROTH: $165 total, $33 per night.

If your friend can really-truly beat those rates with no
strings attached, he and you will be Hero and Heroine Of
The Year!

Sorry for sounding so negative, but we've been teased with
"special group rates" and "perks and freebees" (which end
up being like a free keychain, slot point bonuses, and a
2fer drink coupon) so many times in the past.

Please go back to your friend and see what he can do, and
if he gives us some great rates, I'll gladly eat my words
in public! :)

Limo Tour, Opener and High Tea:

Katie writes:

I have decided to do the Limo Tour, High Tea, Monday night
kick off event and maybe a dining excursion, I can assist as
a hostess / relief person or whatever is required of me.

Please give the main coordinating Hostesses of these events
my E-mail address and they can let me know if I am needed or
how they would like me to assist them.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks Katie.

We'll definitely use you for greeting and/or check-in at the
larger activities.

We'll also include you on contact info exchanges for the other
activities you cited.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
High Tea:

Marilyn writes:

Thanks to all, (Gabi, Laura Tom, Crystal and Danielle - I hope
I didn't miss anyone) that volunteered to help.

Just shows what a great group we have at DLV.

Anyway, as it turns out I've shuffled my work schedule and I
will be attending the whole week, excluding any unforeseen
event. I will be getting in Sunday afternoon and leaving
Saturday morning.

The biggest issue is collecting the pre-paid amounts 72 hours
prior to the event. I'm not set up to receive Pay-Pal payments,
though if one of the volunteers knows how to do it and is
willing to do it I would be very much obliged and this would
make it easier for some tea-goers that are arriving later in
the week.

Copycatting the golf event, I would like a straw poll on how
many people are interested in the tea. This would help when
I call the Four Seasons to give them an estimate.
Again, thanks to the gals that volunteered
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Marilyn.

Good to have you with us full time! :)

I agree, we have a great group of volunteers this year!

If any of you would volunteer to do Paypal collection for the
High Tea, write in and we'll get your contact info to Marilyn.

Yes, we'll put out a request for a "show of hands" for the
High Tea in this weekend's general mailing.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Shopping With Gabi:

Gabi writes:

I think I would love to do a "shopping trip with Gabi"

I could envision it dovetailing with the makeup and nails
event since we will already be out and with nails and makeup
done it will help build confidence.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, Gabi.

It appears that the Macy's Makeover thing is converging on
Friday, so this would make it a more complete daytime thing.

If you (or the cd.com folks) need an exchange of contact info,
say so and we'll make it happen.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
NSD and Hotel Hostesses:

Nicole writes (quoted):

>I have been out of touch since before the holidays (busy time
>of year for me for other than the normal reasons). I might be
>interested in helping with the new NSD concept.

Thanks, Nicole. You're the first for the "Committee Of Three."

>You can e-mail me directly with more details if yo'd like.

Yes, as JoAnn stated, when we reach the "critical mass" of
volunteers for the "challenge", you'll be contacted under
separate cover.
. . . . .

>Also, have we given up on the hotel hostess program?

Definitely not given up, but tabled it, at least for a while.

Here's the story ...

In December, we set a threshold for the level of support
necessary to make the Hotel Hostess program meaningful.

>From the December 14th ORG mailing:

+What we need to see for a minimum level of support is the
+commitment to cover at least three of our five hotels for
+the days up to and including Wednesday of DLV week.

+We need these commitments to be firm by the next mailing,
+scheduled for about January 5.

+Should we get enough volunteers to make this happen, we'll
+announce that it's happening for 2011 and make arrangements
+to incorporate it in the Big Picture for 2011.

+If we don't get this level of support, we'll table it for
+2011, plan for a re-visit of the concept for 2012, and
+concentrate our efforts on the other DLV 2011 activities.

Come January, the response was significantly short of the
threshold of covering at least three of the five hotels.

However, JoAnn and I did discuss the possibility of circling
back to this for 2011, should it appear that we eventually
have the volunteer "bandwidth" to handle it as well as the
main-line schedule of activities.

This means that if at the one-month checkpoint, about March
1, which is a little over a month away, our schedule is
reasonably solid, with all major activities well-covered
and no weak spots, we can re-introduce the topic and open
it up again for volunteers.

Looking at the way things are shaping up as nicely as they
are, it's definitely possible for this to happen.

Should it happen, it will be the same threshold that it was
in December, solid commitments to cover at least three of
our five hotels. If we're gonna do it, we want to do it right
and not half-@$$ed!

>I thought it was worthwhile and would be willing to help
>again this year.

Yes, I do agree that it is worthwhile and a Good Thing for
building comfort and camaradarie.

For you and those who want to see the Hotel Hostess Program
happen this year, please work with us to get that schedule
firm and solid by March 1!

>Only problem is I'm not sure where I will stay yet. Probably
>the IP again and, if so, i could cover the IP, Harrah's, and
>Paris.

I would suggest booking your hotel with the Hotel Hostess
situation only as a minor consideration, as we're unsure if
it will happen this year and won't know for at least a month.

We actually want to avoid combining the hotel get-togethers,
should they happen this year. In case you weren't able to read
between the lines last year, that "to serve you better" thing
of combining Harrah's, IP, and Paris, was a cop-out simply
because we did not have the volunteers to cover all of them
individually.

Assuming we do get the threshold of three volunteers for three
hotels only, we'll just announce that the gatherings at those
three hotels are open to those staying elsewhere, and we won't
try to compensate for the lack of volunteers by doubling up.

>I'm bummed Holly won't make it --I'll miss you Sweetie!

Yes, Holly will be missed. We have a number of go-getters who
will not be with us this year. Fortunately others have picked
up the respective balls and run with them. :)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Mexican Dining:

>How does that sound?

Annie, thanks for sharing your wisdom and suggestions. Let's go
with your suggestions. They sound so much easier and provide a
more efficient way of doing business.

I just want to have a nice hassle-free dining experience. Your
suggestions will make it happen. Rosada
. . . . . . . . . .

I really think this will work best for you. I have a feeling
that this will be well-attended and highly rated. :)

Ski trip:

> K-Y, your ski trip. Time to select a timeslot please.

Hi,

Sorry, this is not what you wanted to hear...

I've been waiting for my vacation approval
decision before committing myself from
discussion of a idea - skiing - to the next
step of involvement and organizing the event
for DLV. I just received the answer from
my superiors.

I will NOT be able to attend DLV this year. Like
Gina, too many projects going on at work at the
time of DLV.
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks for the update, K-Y, yes, you will be dearly missed.

Ski fans? Anyone want to jump in and take the lead on this?
