Org List:

This is the DLV 2011 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Happy Holidays:

Unless something of earthshaking urgency arises, we'll forego
the mailing of this list for the next two weeks. Merry Christmas,
Happy New Year, and Happy belated Hanukkah to all.

The next mailing will be on or about January 5.

For those who wish to see the Hotel Hostess Program happen for
DLV 2011, it's time to throw those hats into the ring, like NOW!
FIRST AND LAST CALL! See items below.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
JoAnn Sez:

The Hostess Program now enters its 2nd year and it really was a most
welcome new event of last year. There is a need for those new to Diva
to know they can make "contact" with others who are attending Diva. So
if you can Volunteer (even for only three days at early part of the
week) please let us know.

Any time you can give to this Hostess program will be most appreciated,
especially those who are coming to Vegas for their first Diva.

JoAnn

Housekeeping items:

One item which is somewhat time sensitive this week is the
Hotel Hostess volunteers. Please see the item below.
. . . . .

Those of you whose list e-mail address agrees with the e-mail
address on file for your DLV registration should have been
included in the test batch of re-registrations sent out last
Friday.

If you didn't get one, don't worry. You, as a volunteer, are
welcome to re-register manually at:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/registerdlv2011.html

Please be on the lookout for anything that doesn't seem right.
Obvious things would be spelling and typos and such, but please
be on the lookout for other things such as factual errors,
wrong information in options, error messages, responses which
are not expected, etc.
. . . . .

Congratulations to Keri and Mardi, whose re-registrations
came in within a few seconds of each other before the batch
had finished! :)
. . . . .

As of this mailing we have 35 signed up, not counting the
cross-registered couples. This has been an excellent test
and has shown up a few minor issues, all which have been
corrected behind the scenes.

We do have two cross-registered couples (couples where both
partners register, each listing the SO as attending on their
registration). Unless we hear otherwise, we'll be converting
all cases of cross-registered couples to two individual
registrations.

One other thing we've done in preparation for this year's
registration is to combine registrations for those who have
re-registered from scratch multiple years. We've identified
as many of these as we can and rolled them into the oldest
registration for those individuals. If the number of the
re-registration you received this year doesn't agree with
what you think it should be, this is most likely the reason.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Hotel vote results:

We have a winner! Five of them, actually.

We also have a loser this year, only the second time in our
history where a nominated/seconded hotel has failed to be
confirmed as a suggested hotel. The previous discussion on
this topic more than adequately explains said failure.

Other than the Sahara, all hotels passed handily with three
of them (Harrah's, IP, Paris) being unopposed.

Votes are listed as Yes/No/Abstain for each hotel, and yes,
there were quite a few abstentions.

Harrah's: 19/0/3
Imperial Palace: 17/0/5
MGM Grand: 18/2/2
Paris: 20/0/2
Rio: 15/4/3
Sahara: 7/12/3

22 total votes were received. No invalid votes.

Last ballot was dated 2139 PST Thursday and polls were
closed 2139 PST Saturday.

These now appear in the "Hotels" section on our web site and
a general mailing will be sent to all later this week.

Thanks to all for a smooth hotel selection process this year.
We have a great selection covering just about any type of
accommodation anyone could possibly want.

Raw votes appear below.

Hotel Hostesses:

Now that our DLV 2011 suggested hotels have been decided, it
is time for those who wish to see the Hotel Hostess Program
continue for DLV 2011 to step forward and say so.

We've established that if we have the Hotel Hostess Program
for DLV 2011, we need a certain minimum level of in-advance
support and participation to render it meaningful.

What we need to see for a minimum level of support is the
commitment to cover at least three of our five hotels for
the days up to and including Wednesday of DLV week.

We need these commitments to be firm by the next mailing,
scheduled for about January 5.

Should we get enough volunteers to make this happen, we'll
announce that it's happening for 2011 and make arrangements
to incorporate it in the Big Picture for 2011.

If we don't get this level of support, we'll table it for
2011, plan for a re-visit of the concept for 2012, and
concentrate our efforts on the other DLV 2011 activities.

What we need are "Lead" hostesses for at least three of the
five hotels. The Lead Hostesses are encouraged to recruit
assistants and delegate some of the duties. It would be
nice if the Lead Hostesses would be staying in their hotels,
but that's not an absolute requirement.

To review, your duty as a Hotel Hostess is to conduct or
coordinate one daily informal get-together on the DLV days
up to and including Wednesday of DLV week. That's it. It would
be nice if you would make your contact information (cell
phone, etc.) available to those staying in your hotel, but
this is not an absolute requirement. Contrary to concerns
raised last year, there are no "duty hours", "watchstanding",
"waiting around for people to check in", etc.

If you are willing to serve as a Lead Hostess for one of
the suggested hotels, please reply and say so within this
list cycle, which will conclude on or prior to January 5.
Please word your reply so there is no question that you
are indeed volunteering as a Lead Hostess. You might also
specify either a "second choice" for a hotel or list more
than one hotel at which you're willing to serve.

This will be the last Call for Hotel Hostess volunteers for
DLV 2011.

Possible outing -- China Ranch Date Farm:

Nora writes:

If we want to go somewhere truly unique for this years Diva I
recommend going to the China Ranch. It is about a 2 hour ride
from Vegas, on the way to Pahrump - turn off road is right before
reaching Pahrump.

It is a working Date farm. The road is paved until about 1/3 of
a mile before the ranch, through the desert then through some
fabulous scenery. In the middle of the desert suddenly you are
on an oasis filled with Date trees.

The TG theme is maintained as the date trees are adorned with
what seems to be house dresses to protect the trees from birds.
I have been there several times and found it to be very enjoyable.

Unfortunately, once again my son will be staying with us during
Diva week so my plans are uncertain and I wont be able to host
the event. I will be happy to advise anyone taking on the role.

http://www.chinaranch.com/
. . . . . . . . . .

Thanks Nora.

>From the web site, it says 77 miles from Las Vegas, so two hours
would be a worst case.

To all, If you're looking for a low-impact "outdoorsy" activity
to coordinate, this is it. Nora will advise on this. It will
most likely fit on the schedule any weekday. Taking the lead on
this will count toward voting status.

Golf:

Mindy writes:

If somebody would get in touch with me, I think Katalin was
interested, I will get the the information for the golf tourn.
I have all the contact info and have kept a file on special
rules, payment options ect.
. . . . .

Thanks Mindy. To all, Mindy's address is: mindy@mindyrussell.com
If you're interested in helping out with Golf, you can either
contact Mindy directly or via the list here. If you make any
plans for Golf, please keep the list here in the loop.

Introducing MyDLV:

This is a fairly major project which I (Annie) have been
working on for several months now, and I hope it will be of
use and of benefit to DLV attendees and potential attendees.

I would like to roll this out to the general attendee base
around the first of the year. I would like to ask volunteers
to help give this a real-world test and shake-down.

For the lack of a better term, this is a set of "social
networking" extensions to our web site. Yes, you could call
it a "Mini-Facebook" if you want.

What started it all was a few comments from Ginger and one
other attendee regarding the fact that our "People Gallery"
was no longer on the web site. These comments came in between
DLV 2009 and DLV 2010.

One of the major benefits I envision is the ability to keep
in touch during the annual event. Let's face it, we have no
effective means of passing the word during our event. If we
can get a significant number of our attendees to subscribe to
"Chirps" on their text-capable cell phones, updates can be
more effectively passed.

Some of the features of MyDLV which are currently in place
include:

1. Photo Gallery. I've put in some hooks to the vast (over
12,000 photos) collection of collections of DLV photos. Users
can easily upload their own photos from their PC or browse the
DLV collections and include those photos in their gallery. Other
users can then view the photos and add comments to them.

This is intended to replace the former high-maintenance
gallery we had during the early and mid 2000s.

2. Chirping (microblogging - yes, an admitted rip-off of
Twitter). I see this as a great way to spread the word on
things during DLV if people will subscribe to "chirps" on
their text-capable cell phones. It has convenient informal
uses too. "I'm at the bar at Imperial Palace, anyone wanna
join me for a drink?"

3. Discussion Forum. Clean interface, threaded by topic,
archives going back to the early 2000s on line for browsing.

Easy one-click reply with sane quoting. This will replace
the current Hypermail interface which I admit is kludgy,
clumsy, and a magnet for spammers.

4. "Friend" mechanism. Basically a way to focus Chirps
to groups of users, but it has other potential as well.

5. The Whiteboard. A just-for-fun widget. :)

6. Blogs. Although there are a few phpBB blog extensions
out there, none of them can rival the true titans of the
blog world such as Wordpress and Movable Type. I've done
an installation of the full multi-user Wordpress version
and done some initial shaking down. I'm hoping that at
least one of you will have the desire to start a personal
blog for this project. I've started a test one on the
history and lore of DLV.

7. Last but not least, easy one-click access to the DLV
registration and activity sign-up screens. No hassles with
forgetting those numbers or digging back through old e-mail
for the correct links.

Please give it a try and let us know if you have any issues.

To get started and try this out, surf here:

http://www.geekbabe.com/dlv/mydlv/

Among the things you can try out to help to shake down the
MyDLV system are:

1. Send a "Chirp" to "All", say Hi and annoy everyone. :)
Just enter what you want to say and click. This can be done
via the main page or else using the ChirpLite screen, which
can be kept open in a window to keep tabs on the Chirp activity.

2. Read the DLV Discussion Forum. Post if you wish. Tell us
about all of the songs named "What's New" and "I'm Free" and
such. :)

3. Browse other users. Look at their photo galleries and such.
Make snide comments about some of the photos. :)

4. Go to the "Manage Friends" screen. Select one or more of the
obvious test users (such as Fnordia) as a new Friend. You can
even "un-friend" me if you wish. :)

5. Go to the "Manage Photo Gallery" screen. Browse the on-line
collections and add a few photos to your gallery. Upload some
photos from your local peecee.

6. Install an avatar. I noticed that Ginger has done it on her
Yahoo account. :)

7. Post some trash on each others' Whiteboards. :)

8. Read some of the test Blogs. Make snotty comments on them. :)

9. Start a Blog if you want. If you want to do this, let me
know, as this needs to be initialized by an administrator.

10. Report any errors, unexpected displays, things that do
not work as expected, etc. :)

Thanks, gang! :)
