Although DLV has indeed occurred during the last week of April
several times in the past, there's no precedent to have it
that week, as there's no precedent to not have it that week.
It just often works out that the last week in April is the best,
as shown below:

1997: Friday, May 9 - Sunday, May 11
1998: Friday, May 8 - Monday, May 11
1999: Friday, May 14 - Tuesday, May 18
2000: Thursday, May 11 - Tuesday, May 16
2001: Wednesday, May 2 - Monday, May 7
2002: Tuesday, April 30 - Sunday, May 5
2003: Tuesday, April 22 - Sunday, April 27
2004: Sunday, May 2 - Saturday, May 8
2005: Sunday, April 24 - Saturday, April 30
2006: Monday, April 17 - Sunday, April 23
2007: Monday, April 23 - Saturday, April 28
2008: Monday, April 21 - Saturday, April 26
2009: Monday, May 11 - Saturday, May 16
2010: Sunday, April 18 - Friday, April 23

The issues and complexities of trying to "lock" DLV into a
certain week and a certain month have been discussed several
times in depth. The discussions are in the ORG list archives
if you want to review them.

That is my point and my question. Would DLV happening during
Lent result in any significant number of our people "giving up
DLV for Lent" for one reason or another?

Ummm ... uh ... ??? :)

Weather is a crapshoot at any time, but I think that any time is
a good time for Las Vegas except last July, when it was really
too hot to do anything at all! :(

Yes, there are two very important "conventions" occurring during
the week of April 17. Holy Week and Passover, which caused that
week to be thrown out of the initial "vetting" due to all kinds
of various family and personal commitments. (And you think we had
complaints when we had DLV over Mothers Day?) :)

Checking with Travelocity, the RT adult fare (OMA-LAS anyway) is
consistently $245 and change throughout late April and early May.

It seems like the well-in-advance bottom-dollar airfare does not
vary as much as it used to. Besides, Easter/Passover are really
not big air travel holidays.

Both May 6 and May 7 are off limits for us. May 8 is Mothers
Day, and standing rules prohibit us from scheduling anything
on Mothers Day or the Friday and Saturday prior. This kinda
rules out any "normal" DLV schedule during the first week of
May.

Last call for Admin. Committee nominations:

No further nominations have come in for the "Even Year" seat
on the Administrative Committee and Gina currently stands
unopposed.

If no further nominations come in within the next list cycle,
we will close the nominations and declare Gina the holder of
the seat, unopposed, by acclamation.

Any further nominations? Last call!

Air Tour hangovers:

>Whether or not this falls under the heading of "do as I say, not
>as I do", I won't comment at this time. :)

Uh, good luck getting our people to give up their late evening
partying, whether it's for Lent or for Air Tours. :)

I think your idea of the refundable "No-Show Deposit" is one
of the better ways of dealing with this. Let the no-shows pay
for the fuel for those who do show up. :)

How come:

Bob writes:

>Cynthia Phillips can make a reply to a toast that i sent to
>the discussion page, but it was never posted to the page? How
>could she know that I made the toast if it wasn't printed?

>hmmm perplexing.

Sorry if this answer seems overly complicated, but there are
many reasons why, under certain circumstances, a reply may
appear in any one medium before the original message does.

There are also many reasons why a message may fail to appear
at all.

To make a long story long ... :)

Our Discussion Forum appears in many formats, and due to the
nature of the technology, things don't always appear exactly
the same on each medium. Here's a run-down of how your message
and Cynthia's reply appear. (This is as of Thursday afternoon.)

1. On the mailing list, which is the most timely and most
reliable method of accessing the Discussion Forum, both
messages appear in their correct order. However, due to the
nature of e-mail being far from perfect, some users may see
the two items out of order, or may be missing one or both.

2. On the geekbabe.com digest (we only have 6 users getting
the Discussion Forum this way), your original message appeared
in Vol. 8, item 279, but Cynthia's reply has yet to be sent,
as of Thursday afternoon. It may not appear in a digest for
up to a week, depending on traffic load. (Update: It went
out Monday this week.)

3. On the web view (www.geekbabe.com/dlv/dlvdisc/) both of
the messages appear in the correct order as of the update
on Wed Aug 25 2010 - 19:25:06 CDT. The web interface into
the Discussion Forum is actually a "snapshot" of the message
archive, and due to all kinds of circumstances, the messages
may appear in it anywhere from a few seconds after posting to
up to 24 hours later. Yes, they can appear out of order for
any of several reasons.

4. On the Yahoo side (groups.yahoo.com/group/dlvegas/), both
messages appear in the correct order.

5. For the Yahoo Digest, both items should have been sent
out at the end of the day, Wednesday, but we don't QA this
method.

If you want the most accurate and the most timely delivery
of the Discussion Forum, I suggest you subscribe to the
mailing list version. Just send a brief "Subscribe" message
to dlvdisc@geekbabe.com and you will be added.

And ... not to let any cats out of bags, but there are some
big plans for some new and exciting on-line resources for
DLV people, most likely being rolled out around the first
of the year. We may ask the ORG people to help test and do
a shakedown on them.
