Org List:

This is the DLV 2011 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not

Moving forward:

As we "advance the conversation" on dates, there are five(5)
dates [(a) through (e) below] being suggested for consideration.

Any other suggestions and the reason for such are welcome.

This is the time to hear from you not only about dates you have
difficulty with, but also, your reasons that a date might be
your preference. Only by dialog do we get the consensus and
new ideas. So Annie and I look forward to all
inputs.

Thanks so much.

Air and Karaoke:

What I might suggest is that you schedule the Air Tours on
a morning toward the beginning of the event. Get the people
while they are still "fresh" and not overloaded due to the
intensity of the week.

There are many possibilities for Karaoke for DLV 2011, and there
will probably be at least one self-produced performance activity
where something you have in mind would be a great fit. Let's
hold these thoughts until we start the actual planning of the
DLV 2011 schedule, and then look to see where something along
that line will best fit.

Admin Committee Nomination:

Annie writes (from a conversation):

>>>>A re-nomination of Gina would also be appropriate.

>>>I re-nominate (or second) Gina. :)

>>Nomination for Gina so noted. JoAnn

>But are you seconding it? :)

And, yes, I second it. JoAnn Marie.

Any additional nominations for the Administrative Committee
even-year seat?

Admin Committee and dates:

Gina writes:

If I can help as an admin again I'd be happy to. So I guess I
would agree to be nominated. I need the paycheck. :-)

No negative comments on any dates (no especially positive
ones either).

DLV 2011 dates:

Annie writes:

I would like to encourage all, particularly those who are
new to the DLV volunteer force, to share your thoughts and
feelings regarding the proposed DLV 2011 dates.

In particular, are there any of these proposed timeframes
which are especially bad for you? If we have any serious
conflicts, it's much better if we know them in advance, and
not at the 11th. hour.

via e-mail to: dlvorg@geekbabe.com
. . . . .

Personally, I really don't have a dog in this fight. All of
the proposed timeframes appear to be equally convenient for
me, so my preference is for the timeframe which will give
us our absolute greatest turnout.

>(a) Sunday, March 20 thru Friday March 25
>(b) Sunday, March 27 thru Friday, April 1
>(c) Sunday, April 3 thru Friday, April 8

Should we select one of the above timeframes, this will be the
first time that DLV would be held prior to Easter, and would
therefore be during Lent.

I'm not Catholic, but I would guess that at least 20% of our
attendees are. I also know that some Protestants observe Lent
to one degree or another.

Would holding DLV during Lent affect our turnout?

Will the Lenten practices of moderation of food/drink/vices and
other self-expropriations affect our turnout? (I don't know,
I'm asking.) Are there family commitments during this part of
Lent which will dissuade some?

I would like to hear from those who do observe Lent as to the
degree you think it would influence our turnout.
. . . . .

>(d) Monday, April 25 thru Saturday April 30 [Easter Sunday - April 24th]

In 2003 and 2006, DLV began the Monday after Easter, and I
don't recall any complaints about it in either year. (Yes,
some 2003 schedules give a Tuesday start, but there was an
extension to take in a fairly significant activity on Monday.)
I'm sure some of our people had some family issues which
delayed their arrival at DLV, but I do remember we had good
turnouts at Pre-DLV things Sunday (Easter) evening both years.

>(e) Monday, May 9 thru Saturday, May 14th [Mother.s Day - May 8th]

In 2009 we began DLV on the Monday following Mothers Day. I
don't believe it had any significant impact on our turnout,
but I'm sure some were delayed due to family commitments. We
did need to do a rule suspension to allow us to announce
Pre-DLV MCC and evening gathering on Sunday, which was Mothers
Day.

All in all, I'm leaning toward the April 25-30 timeframe as
the best overall option here.

Michelle (NZ) writes:

I would like to know what the issues are for not holding DLV on/in each
of the following weeks. This is an extended list from Joann's and I'm
sure there are reasons why these weeks are not considered in her list
(I've noted a few issues from past experiences) ....

Week 12 Sun March 20
Week 13 Sun March 27
Week 14 Sun April 3
Week 15 Sun April 10
        - NAB - April 9-14
Week 16 Sun April 17
        - Good Friday April 22
Week 17 Sun April 24
        - Easter Sunday
Week 18 Sun May 1
Week 19 Sun May 8
        - Mothers Day
        - InterOp May 8-12
Week 20 Sun May 15

In line with previous years we need to find a suitable week before
consideration of a start day (ie Sunday, Monday etc)

Weather wise - From Las Vegas Weather site:

MARCH (Avg 65-72, Record high < 91)
-----
Las Vegas Weather in March sees the daily temperatures climb from a
normal high in the mid 60's in the beginning of the month to the lower
70's. The weather is warm, but not hot, sunny and very pleasant. March
is a great time to casino hop, golf, walk, or run. Bring more long pants
than shorts, March Las Vegas weather can be cool at times, and there's a
significant difference between the weather earlier in the month and
later in the month.

APRIL (Avg 72-82, Record high < 100)
-----
Will the Las Vegas Weather in April include April showers? Not likely,
April is typically the second driest month on the year in this desert
city. Vegas weather in April includes average daily high temperatures
that are over 80 by the end of April, making it a truly great time to be
in Las Vegas. You can swim, golf, walk, run, or hike in Red Rock Canyon.

Not only is April one of the most pleasant months for weather, it's also
one of the busier months, so make sure you have hotel reservations
before you come to town.

MAY (Avg 82-95, Record high < 110)
-----
The May Weather In Las Vegas starts out warm and pleasant, but by the
end of the month the 100F weather will almost certainly begin. The
humidity is normally very low in May in Las Vegas, and unless you have
experienced 100 degree days in the desert you may be surprised by how
tolerable they are when the humidity is in the single digits. A typical
Las Vegas Memorial Day is 94F, with very low humidity, and sunny.
Memorial Day Weekend is often the best three day holiday weekend for Las
Vegas Weather.

Las Vegas Weather in May is great for most outdoor activities, but bring
shorts and sun screen.

Hugs Michelle
