Org List:

This is the DLV 2010 Organizational Mailing List (dlvorg@geekbabe.com)
Replies to this message will be forwarded to the DLVORG list and not
the DLV-Announce or DLV-Discuss list.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Formal:

This is a special mailing covering only the proposed Formal
and Pity Party. Other items will appear in a general ORG
mailing, most likely when the polls on the HRC Welcome
Celebration are closed.

Speaking of which, have you voted yet? (>>HINT!<<)
. . . . . . . . . .

I'm trying to work toward a semi-conclusion in response to
Amy's original proposal, formulating something that Nora
can take back to Amy for some further thoughts, actions and
a revised proposal.

I would like ALL of you to please look over these bullet
points and if you see something that is glaringly obvious
as something we don't want to do, speak NOW, as this is
about to be counter-proposed.

I would also like ALL of you to please look over my list
of questions and concerns at the bottom of this item, and
if these concerns are such that you would likely not
attend this, please speak up.

Here's what we've converged upon - something like this:

Timeframe: Friday evening, ca. 7:00pm to 11:00pm.

Overall theme: Combined "Spring Formal" and "Pity Party".

Purpose and scope: Final maximum-attendance single-track
going-away activity.

Entertainment: Quality Social Time, Pity Party Show,
possible dancing.

Food and beverage: Cash bar, desserts and snacks. Open to
possible optional dinner, paid separately.

Preferred venue: Italian-American club. Proposals for
alternate venues will be considered.

Price point: Will need further discussion if proposed
price point is above $30 per person, not including
dinner.
. . . . . . . . . .

A few misc. notes, on which we do appear to be somewhat
in agreement. If anyone disagrees with any of this,
please say so.

1. The term "prom", has fallen out of favor. Scratched!

2. The idea of a "banquet" theme was not supported.

3. Ideas for bundling the Formal theme with other
activities such as the Limo Tour and Trevi did not
gain support.
. . . . . . . . . .

Big Burning Questions (concerns):

I do have some reservations about this, two major concerns.

I do want to see this activity be well-attended. I don't
think, given the circumstances, that we can get as many to
this as we will to the HRC on Monday (should that proposal
carry), but I would like to see a respectable turnout from
DLV attendees from all over the various spectra.

IF THE ANSWER TO THESE QUESTIONS IS YES, PLEASE SAY SO
NOW, BEFORE THIS IS SET IN STONE!

1. Price point and payment vs. turnout.

I'm concerned that a price point in the tens of dollars,
just to attend, will cause some to skip this. To some, $30
is no big deal for a night out, but to others it is. It may
be of particular concern to couples.

QUESTION TO ALL: Is the price point (ca. $30) such that
you would consider skipping this activity?

2. Degree of "mainstream-ness", or lack of same. The
proposed venue (Italian-American Club) is indeed open
to the public, but we will be in a reception hall type
of thing. This would be classified as a "Major Venue"
type of activity on the Michelle Scale. :) It's also
somewhat far from the center of the action, so to speak,
east Sahara, between Eastern and {mumble} IIRC.

QUESTION TO ALL: Is the relative distance and seclusion
of the proposed venus such that you would consider skipping
this activity?

Inquiring minds want to know. :)

Comments, gang?

Food concerns:

Kat writes:

>>Not to put you on the spot, but would you care to be

>With apologies to Amy and her magnificent Halloween bash,
>The food was typical buffet fare chicken, beef and pasta
>all served swimming in an unknown sauce (pasta was white,
>chicken was white, beef was brown).

Oh, kind of like the Circus-Circus buffet then, huh? :) :)

"I'll have some of the yellow!" :) :) :)

>The taste was well to us anyway terrible (made rubber
>chicken seem appealing) the salad was iceberg style (and
>about the only thing I ate) with some mixed vegetables
>and even with steam tables the fare was lukewarm.

>Please if anyone else was there I know I am being a little
>harsh but the food was not that good and Amy was begging
>people to take it with them and no one did.

>The cake was fine. And at the Italian American club all
>drinks cost money water was a 1.50 soft drinks were 2.00
>and no refills. I am unsure how much alcohol was (did not
>drink that night other reasons)

>We disliked the food so much that even if this is offered
>we will eat elsewhere.

Thanks for being candid, Kat.

Did you let Amy know that the food was not to your liking?
It might be good to do so.

>I also want to point out we were sharing a wall with
>mainstream and they have a bar that is mainstream so we
>will see regular folks there.

I really don't think this would be too much of a major
concern. It may, in fact, increase the appeal to some
of our crowd, knowing that there would be an option to
step into a mainstream bar for some "fresh" air if they
felt the need.

One of my concerns about this proposal is, "is it
mainstream enough?" By that I mean I am concerned
that, when compared with other factors such as price
point, may cause some of our more gregarious people
to skip it.

>The party was FUN with acts and dancing and music it was
>a great time. Amy's party lasted till 3 am and we could do
>11 if wanted but my SO and I probably will not go to another
>place afterwards (we never seem to) and if the close off is
>11 then well if we include dinner when are you planning to
>start?

>if we start at say 7 we would have an hour of food and
>an hour to an hour an done half of "acts" we are 9:30
>give or take is 11 late enough?

My assumption is to have the doors open 7-ish, to allow
for QST when the crowd arrives and accumulates.

>Maybe midnight? my thoughts are these if people want to
>leave they will, and well most of us love to dance just
>a idea to toss around. Now if we do dinner before hand
>and then this well 8 to 11 would be great. Thoughts?

I really don't think the close time is set in stone. If
there's a desire to have dancing after the Pity Party
Show, let's hear it, so plans can be made. Do keep in
mind that deejays and sound guys work by the hour, with
usually a minimum on Friday/Saturday, so it might be
a strain to the price point to keep the dancing going
another hour, particularly if the demand can't be
assured.

Anyway, thanks for the comments, Kat. :)

Formal thoughts:

JoAnn writes:

>>First, I assume you meant to say 11:00pm as the lights-out

>Yes & No!!!

>Yes, this DLV Prom would close out at 11pm. And, ...No... if
>it was like my Prom the closeout was not until 11am, next
>day with a luau breakfast on the beach at Redondo Beach were
>the lights out (figuratively)!!!!!! Foolish youth...

Yes, the prom experience does include post-prom activities
as well.

>the breakfast was morning luau 11am is when I returned
>from my "prom"

We didn't have any Morning Luau. :) The gang I went with
(3 couples) ended up at the Pancake House the next morning,
and I think we finally burned out between 9-10 in the
morning or so.

>Still feel a Pity/Gala [Prom] with all things as stated
>previously at $35.00 and without dinner could be a "DLV
>closing a success".

Thanks, JoAnn. :)

To all: Is everyone comfortable with the $30-35 price
point? Will that dissuade anyone from attending? (Let's
hear some chatter from the infield!) :)
