Dates for DLV 2010:

This is a special mailing covering dates for Diva Las
Vegas 2010.

Our first order of business is setting the dates for DLV 2010.

Please see the discussion below, and please feel free to add
to it as well as to nominate or second any set of dates.

For those who are new, to participate in the discussion or to
nominate a set of dates, just reply to this mailing. If you
wish to send manually, the address is: dlvorg@geekbabe.com

To save time and to avoid back-and-forth e-mail, if you wish
to nominate a particular timeframe, please use words to the
effect of "I nominate" (or "I second") and please use exact
dates instead of naming a calendar week or a vague set of
dates.

Beginning the date discussion:

Please feel free to discuss any item I'm bringing up or
introduce items which are relevant but not mentioned.

For those who are new, we want to have a proposed set of
dates ready to announce on or about August 1. We're running
a bit late this year, so that may not happen at that exact
date. We then allow a one-month "call for comments" on our
proposed dates and if no significant objections are received,
they become final.

I think we should consider only April in 2010, unless there
are extenuating circumstances which are unknown as this time.

Moving right along ...

As Tina used to say, let's round up the usual suspects:

1. Easter is Sunday, April 4.
2. Passover concludes at sunset, Monday, April 5.
3. NAB Convention is Monday, April 12 - Thursday, April 15.
4. Interop is Sunday, April 25 - Friday, April 30.
5. National Hardware Show is Tuesday, May 4 - Thursday, May 6.
6. Mothers Day is Sunday, May 9.

These are the days of family commitments and other goings-on
which may cause difficulties for us in scheduling.

Let's go through and discuss April, week by week.

The first partial-week in April (March 28 - April 3) is Holy
Week and Passover. This is obviously bad for us.

First full week in April (April 4 - 10) is adjacent to
Easter and the end of Passover, which may force a late
start for some individuals, those with family commitments.
Not a total lock-out, but may present issues for some
attendees.

Second full week in April (April 11 - 17) is the NAB
convention, which has historically caused room prices
to sharply spike. Bad. QED!

Third full week in April (April 18 - 24) has no apparent
conflicts.

Fourth week in April (April 25 - May 1) overlaps Interop.
For the past few years, Interop has been small enough that it
has not caused room prices to spike, but this may be bad for
some who want to do both DLV and Interop.

I think April in 2010 offers us opportunities such that
we do not need to consider May for DLV 2010. One reminder,
if we should examine May, we are prohibited by standing
rules from scheduling anything on Mothers Day or the
Friday and Saturday before Mothers Day.

Therefore I think the best option is the third full week
in April, as it has the fewest conflicts of any timespan
in the month.

I would like to nominate the timeframe of Sunday, April 18
thru Friday, April 23 for DLV 2010.

Yes, that's Sunday thru Friday.

Why Sunday thru Friday?

First, it forces some variety into our schedule. We're
not nudged into similar themes on the same weekdays.

Second, it allows full participation on weekday room
rates. It is predicted that Las Vegas room rates will
rise over the coming 9 months or so.

I am placing April 18 - 23 into nomination. Do we have
a second?

Do we have nominations for any other timeframes?
. . . . .

A related subject is the length of the event. Yes, many
seem to favor a longer and longer event, and for a few
years we did have a 7-day DLV. This proved to be too much
of a strain on our volunteer force so we scaled back to
a 6-day event.

Those in favor of a 7-day (or longer) DLV are expected to
express equal enthusiasm toward a sincere commitment to
recruiting additional volunteer help. :)
. . . . .

Another topic which comes up, one which we've had to work
around several times, is the availability of key players.

Yes, the availability of our more active volunteers is one
factor we need to consider when setting the dates for DLV.

This may sound unfair, but if one or more of the people who
do the "real work" involved in making DLV happen are not
available, it can place a significant overload on the other
volunteers.

Therefore, if you are an active volunteer and you find that
you are ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY LOCKED OUT of any set
of dates proposed for DLV, please speak up PRIOR TO
ANY VOTE BEING TAKEN on those dates!
. . . . .

Comments? Discussion? Seconds?

Additional timeframe nominations?
